Synthesis of heavy hydrocarbons at the core-mantle boundary.

ABSTRACT: The synthesis of complex organic molecules with C-C bonds is possible under conditions of reduced activity of oxygen. We have found performing ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of the C-O-H-Fe system that such conditions exist at the core-mantle boundary (CMB). H2O and CO2 delivered to the CMB by subducting slabs provide a source for hydrogen and carbon. The mixture of H2O and CO2 subjected to high pressure (130 GPa) and temperature (4000 to 4500 K) does not lead to synthesis of complex hydrocarbons. However, when Fe is added to the system, C-C bonds emerge. It means that oil might be a more abundant mineral than previously thought.

Geomagnetic spikes on the core-mantle boundary.

Project description:Extreme variations of Earth's magnetic field occurred in the Levant region around 1000 BC, when the field intensity rapidly rose and fell by a factor of 2. No coherent link currently exists between this intensity spike and the global field produced by the core geodynamo. Here we show that the Levantine spike must span >60° longitude at Earth's surface if it originates from the core-mantle boundary (CMB). Several low intensity data are incompatible with this geometric bound, though age uncertainties suggest these data could have sampled the field before the spike emerged. Models that best satisfy energetic and geometric constraints produce CMB spikes 8-22° wide, peaking at O(100) mT. We suggest that the Levantine spike reflects an intense CMB flux patch that grew in place before migrating northwest, contributing to growth of the dipole field. Estimates of Ohmic heating suggest that diffusive processes likely govern the ultimate decay of geomagnetic spikes.

Fate of MgSiO3 melts at core-mantle boundary conditions.

Project description:One key for understanding the stratification in the deep mantle lies in the determination of the density and structure of matter at high pressures, as well as the density contrast between solid and liquid silicate phases. Indeed, the density contrast is the main control on the entrainment or settlement of matter and is of fundamental importance for understanding the past and present dynamic behavior of the deepest part of the Earth's mantle. Here, we adapted the X-ray absorption method to the small dimensions of the diamond anvil cell, enabling density measurements of amorphous materials to unprecedented conditions of pressure. Our density data for MgSiO3 glass up to 127 GPa are considerably higher than those previously derived from Brillouin spectroscopy but validate recent ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. A fourth-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state reproduces our experimental data over the entire pressure regime of the mantle. At the core-mantle boundary (CMB) pressure, the density of MgSiO3 glass is 5.48 ± 0.18 g/cm(3), which is only 1.6% lower than that of MgSiO3 bridgmanite at 5.57 g/cm(3), i.e., they are the same within the uncertainty. Taking into account the partitioning of iron into the melt, we conclude that melts are denser than the surrounding solid phases in the lowermost mantle and that melts will be trapped above the CMB.

Kilometer-scale structure on the core-mantle boundary near Hawaii.

Project description:The lowermost mantle right above the core-mantle boundary is highly heterogeneous containing multiple poorly understood seismic features. The smallest but most extreme heterogeneities yet observed are 'Ultra-Low Velocity Zones' (ULVZ). We exploit seismic shear waves that diffract along the core-mantle boundary to provide new insight into these enigmatic structures. We measure a rare core-diffracted signal refracted by a ULVZ at the base of the Hawaiian mantle plume at unprecedentedly high frequencies. This signal shows remarkably longer time delays at higher compared to lower frequencies, indicating a pronounced internal variability inside the ULVZ. Utilizing the latest computational advances in 3D waveform modeling, here we show that we are able to model this high-frequency signal and constrain high-resolution ULVZ structure on the scale of kilometers, for the first time. This new observation suggests a chemically distinct ULVZ with increasing iron content towards the core-mantle boundary, which has implications for Earth's early evolutionary history and core-mantle interaction.

Compositionally-distinct ultra-low velocity zones on Earth's core-mantle boundary.

Project description:The Earth's lowermost mantle large low velocity provinces are accompanied by small-scale ultralow velocity zones in localized regions on the core-mantle boundary. Large low velocity provinces are hypothesized to be caused by large-scale compositional heterogeneity (i.e., thermochemical piles). The origin of ultralow velocity zones, however, remains elusive. Here we perform three-dimensional geodynamical calculations to show that the current locations and shapes of ultralow velocity zones are related to their cause. We find that the hottest lowermost mantle regions are commonly located well within the interiors of thermochemical piles. In contrast, accumulations of ultradense compositionally distinct material occur as discontinuous patches along the margins of thermochemical piles and have asymmetrical cross-sectional shape. Furthermore, the lateral morphology of these patches provides insight into mantle flow directions and long-term stability. The global distribution and large variations of morphology of ultralow velocity zones validate a compositionally distinct origin for most ultralow velocity zones.Ultralow velocity zones are detected on the core-mantle boundary, but their origin is enigmatic. Here, the authors find that the global distribution and large variations of morphology of ultralow velocity zones are consistent with most having a compositionally-distinct origin.

Identifying dehydration-induced shear velocity anomaly in the Earth's core-mantle boundary.

Project description:The steep temperature gradient near the bottom of the mantle is known to generate a negative correlation between the shear wave velocity (V S ) and the depth in most regions of the D″ layer, as detected by seismological observations. However, increasing V S with depth is observed at the D″ layer beneath Central America, where the Farallon slab sinks, and the origin of this anomaly has not been well constrained. Here, we calculate the thermoelastic constants and obtain the elastic wave velocities of hydrous phase H with various Al contents and cation configurations, which may act as a water carrier to the D″ layer. We find its V S to be substantially lower than the post-perovskite-type bridgmanite. The dehydration of Al-enriched phase H and the redistribution of Al from the hydrous component to dry silicates would gradually raise the V S below the top of the D″ layer. The presence of 3.5 wt % water is sufficient to compensate for the thermal effects to match the seismic anomaly at the bottom of the mantle beneath Central America. The positive slope of V S versus depth in the D″ layer may fingerprint deep water recycling.

Superionic iron hydride shapes ultralow-velocity zones at Earth's core-mantle boundary.

Project description:Seismological studies have exposed numerous ultralow velocity zones (ULVZs) exhibiting extraordinary physical attributes at Earth's core-mantle boundary, yet their compositions and origins remain controversial. Water-iron reaction can generate unique phases under lowermost-mantle conditions and likely plays a crucial role in forming ULVZs. Through first-principles molecular dynamic simulations with machine learning techniques, we determine that iron hydride, the product of water-iron reaction, is stable as a superionic phase at the core-mantle boundary. This superionic iron hydride has much slower velocities and a higher density than the ambient mantle under lowermost-mantle conditions. Accumulation of iron hydride, created through either a chemical reaction between subducted water and iron or solidification of core material entrained in the lower mantle by convection, can explain the seismic observations of ULVZs particularly those associated with subduction. This work suggests that water may have a substantial role in creating seismic heterogeneities at the core-mantle boundary.

Extensive iron-water exchange at Earth's core-mantle boundary can explain seismic anomalies.

Project description:Seismological observations indicate the presence of chemical heterogeneities at the lowermost mantle, just above the core-mantle boundary (CMB), sparking debate over their origins. A plausible explanation for the enigmatic seismic wave velocities observed in ultra-low-velocity zones (ULVZs) is the process of iron enrichment from the core to the silicate mantle. However, traditional models based on diffusion of atoms and penetration of molten iron fail to account for the significant iron enrichment observed in ULVZs. Here, we show that the chemical reaction between silicate bridgmanite and iron under hydrous conditions leads to profound iron enrichment within silicate, a process not seen in anhydrous conditions. Our findings suggest that the interaction between the core and mantle facilitates deep iron enrichment over a few kilometres at the bottom of the mantle when water is present. We propose that the seismic signatures observed in ULVZs indicate whole mantle convection, accompanied by deep water cycles from the crust to the core through Earth's history.

Melting and defect transitions in FeO up to pressures of Earth's core-mantle boundary.

Project description:The high-pressure melting curve of FeO controls key aspects of Earth's deep interior and the evolution of rocky planets more broadly. However, existing melting studies on wüstite were conducted across a limited pressure range and exhibit substantial disagreement. Here we use an in-situ dual-technique approach that combines a suite of >1000 x-ray diffraction and synchrotron Mössbauer measurements to report the melting curve for Fe1-xO wüstite to pressures of Earth's lowermost mantle. We further observe features in the data suggesting an order-disorder transition in the iron defect structure several hundred kelvin below melting. This solid-solid transition, suggested by decades of ambient pressure research, is detected across the full pressure range of the study (30 to 140 GPa). At 136 GPa, our results constrain a relatively high melting temperature of 4140 ± 110 K, which falls above recent temperature estimates for Earth's present-day core-mantle boundary and supports the viability of solid FeO-rich structures at the roots of mantle plumes. The coincidence of the defect order-disorder transition with pressure-temperature conditions of Earth's mantle base raises broad questions about its possible influence on key physical properties of the region, including rheology and conductivity.

Globally distributed subducted materials along the Earth’s core-mantle boundary: Implications for ultralow velocity zones

Project description:Ultralow velocity zones (ULVZs) are the most anomalous structures within the Earth’s interior; however, given the wide range of associated characteristics (thickness and composition) reported by previous studies, the origins of ULVZs have been debated for decades. Using a recently developed seismic analysis approach, we find widespread, variable ULVZs along the core-mantle boundary (CMB) beneath a largely unsampled portion of the Southern Hemisphere. Our study region is not beneath current or recent subduction zones, but our mantle convection simulations demonstrate how heterogeneous accumulations of previously subducted materials could form on the CMB and explain our seismic observations. We further show that subducted materials can be globally distributed throughout the lowermost mantle with variable concentrations. These subducted materials, advected along the CMB, can provide an explanation for the distribution and range of reported ULVZ properties. Anomalies along Earth’s core can be explained by former oceanic seafloor that descended 3000 km to the base of the mantle.

Grain boundary mobility of carbon in Earth's mantle: a possible carbon flux from the core.

Project description:The importance of carbon in Earth's mantle greatly exceeds its modest abundance of approximately 1,000-4,000 ppm. Carbon is a constituent of key terrestrial volatiles (CO, CO(2), CH(4)), it forms diamonds, and it may also contribute to the bulk electrical properties of the silicate Earth. In contrast to that of the mantle, the carbon content of Earth's metallic core may be quite high ( approximately 5 wt %), raising the possibility that the core has supplied carbon to the mantle over geologic time. The plausibility of this process depends in part upon the mobility of carbon atoms in the solid mantle. Grain boundaries of mantle minerals could represent fast pathways for transport as well as localized sites for enrichment and storage of carbon. Here, we report the results of an experimental study of grain-boundary diffusion of carbon through polycrystalline periclase (MgO) and olivine ([Mg,Fe](2)SiO(4)) that were obtained by determining the extent of solid solution formation between a graphite source and a metal sink (Ni or Fe) separated by the polycrystalline materials. Experimental materials were annealed at 1,373-1,773 K and 1.5-2.5 GPa pressure. Calculated diffusivities, which range up to 10(-11) m(2).s(-1), are fast enough to allow transport over geologically significant length scales ( approximately 10 km) over the age of the Earth. Mobility and enrichment of carbon on grain boundaries may also explain the high electrical conductivity of upper mantle rocks, and could result in the formation of C-H-O volatiles through interactions of core-derived C with recycled H(2)O in subduction zones.
