High pressure effects revisited for the cuprate superconductor family with highest critical temperature.

ABSTRACT: How to enhance the superconducting critical temperature (Tc) has been a primary issue since the discovery of superconductivity. The highest Tc reported so far is 166 K in HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+δ (Hg1223) at high pressure of 23 GPa, as determined with the reduction onset, but not zero, of resistivity. To clarify the possible condition of the real maximum Tc, it is worth revisiting the effects of pressure on Tc in the highest Tc family. Here we report a systematic study of the pressure dependence of Tc in HgBa2CaCu2O6+δ (Hg1212) and Hg1223 with the doping level from underdoped to overdoped. The Tc with zero resistivity is probed with a cubic-anvil-type apparatus that can produce hydrostatic pressures. Variation, not only increase but also decrease, of Tc in Hg1212 and Hg1223 with pressure strongly depends on the initial doping levels. In particular, we confirm a maximum Tc of 153 K at 22 GPa in slightly underdoped Hg1223.

Disorder raises the critical temperature of a cuprate superconductor.

Project description:With the discovery of charge-density waves (CDWs) in most members of the cuprate high-temperature superconductors, the interplay between superconductivity and CDWs has become a key point in the debate on the origin of high-temperature superconductivity. Some experiments in cuprates point toward a CDW state competing with superconductivity, but others raise the possibility of a CDW-superconductivity intertwined order or more elusive pair-density waves (PDWs). Here, we have used proton irradiation to induce disorder in crystals of [Formula: see text] and observed a striking 50% increase of [Formula: see text], accompanied by a suppression of the CDWs. This is in sharp contrast with the behavior expected of a d-wave superconductor, for which both magnetic and nonmagnetic defects should suppress [Formula: see text] Our results thus make an unambiguous case for the strong detrimental effect of the CDW on bulk superconductivity in [Formula: see text] Using tunnel diode oscillator (TDO) measurements, we find indications for potential dynamic layer decoupling in a PDW phase. Our results establish irradiation-induced disorder as a particularly relevant tuning parameter for the many families of superconductors with coexisting density waves, which we demonstrate on superconductors such as the dichalcogenides and [Formula: see text].

Stimulated emission of Cooper pairs in a high-temperature cuprate superconductor.

Project description:The concept of stimulated emission of bosons has played an important role in modern science and technology, and constitutes the working principle for lasers. In a stimulated emission process, an incoming photon enhances the probability that an excited atomic state will transition to a lower energy state and generate a second photon of the same energy. It is expected, but not experimentally shown, that stimulated emission contributes significantly to the zero resistance current in a superconductor by enhancing the probability that scattered Cooper pairs will return to the macroscopically occupied condensate instead of entering any other state. Here, we use time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study the initial rise of the non-equilibrium quasiparticle population in a Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ cuprate superconductor induced by an ultrashort laser pulse. Our finding reveals significantly slower buildup of quasiparticles in the superconducting state than in the normal state. The slower buildup only occurs when the pump pulse is too weak to deplete the superconducting condensate, and for cuts inside the Fermi arc region. We propose this is a manifestation of stimulated recombination of broken Cooper pairs, and signals an important momentum space dichotomy in the formation of Cooper pairs inside and outside the Fermi arc region.

Enhanced critical current density in the pressure-induced magnetic state of the high-temperature superconductor FeSe.

Project description:We investigate the relation of the critical current density (Jc) and the remarkably increased superconducting transition temperature (Tc) for the FeSe single crystals under pressures up to 2.43 GPa, where the Tc is increased by ~8 K/GPa. The critical current density corresponding to the free flux flow is monotonically enhanced by pressure which is due to the increase in Tc, whereas the depinning critical current density at which the vortex starts to move is more influenced by the pressure-induced magnetic state compared to the increase of Tc. Unlike other high-Tc superconductors, FeSe is not magnetic, but superconducting at ambient pressure. Above a critical pressure where magnetic state is induced and coexists with superconductivity, the depinning Jc abruptly increases even though the increase of the zero-resistivity Tc is negligible, directly indicating that the flux pinning property compared to the Tc enhancement is a more crucial factor for an achievement of a large Jc. In addition, the sharp increase in Jc in the coexisting superconducting phase of FeSe demonstrates that vortices can be effectively trapped by the competing antiferromagnetic order, even though its antagonistic nature against superconductivity is well documented. These results provide new guidance toward technological applications of high-temperature superconductors.

Quantum critical scaling at the edge of Fermi liquid stability in a cuprate superconductor.

Project description:In the high-temperature cuprate superconductors, the pervasiveness of anomalous electronic transport properties suggests that violation of conventional Fermi liquid behavior is closely tied to superconductivity. In other classes of unconventional superconductors, atypical transport is well correlated with proximity to a quantum critical point, but the relative importance of quantum criticality in the cuprates remains uncertain. Here, we identify quantum critical scaling in the electron-doped cuprate material La(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4) with a line of quantum critical points that surrounds the superconducting phase as a function of magnetic field and charge doping. This zero-temperature phase boundary, which delineates a metallic Fermi liquid regime from an extended non-Fermi liquid ground state, closely follows the upper critical field of the overdoped superconducting phase and gives rise to an expanse of distinct non-Fermi liquid behavior at finite temperatures. Together with signatures of two distinct flavors of quantum fluctuations, these facts suggest that quantum criticality plays a significant role in shaping the anomalous properties of the cuprate phase diagram.

Cr[Formula: see text]AlN and the search for the highest temperature superconductor in the M[Formula: see text]AX family.

Project description:We have developed a high-throughput computational method to predict the superconducting transition temperature in stable hexagonal M[Formula: see text]AX phases, and applied it to all the known possible choices for M (M: Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Lu, Hf and Ta). We combine this with the best candidates for A (A: Al, Cu, Ge and Sn ) and X (X: C and N) from our previous work, and predict T[Formula: see text] for 60 M[Formula: see text]AX-phase materials, 53 of which have never been studied before. From all of these, we identify Cr[Formula: see text]AlN as the best candidate for the highest T[Formula: see text], and confirm its high T[Formula: see text] with more detailed density functional theory electron-phonon coupling calculations. Our detailed calculations predict [Formula: see text] = 14.8 K for Cr[Formula: see text]AlN, which is significantly higher than any [Formula: see text] value known or predicted for any material in the M[Formula: see text]AX family to date.

Charge density wave memory in a cuprate superconductor.

Project description:Although CDW correlations are a ubiquitous feature of the superconducting cuprates, their disparate properties suggest a crucial role for pinning the CDW to the lattice. Here, we report coherent resonant X-ray speckle correlation analysis, which directly determines the reproducibility of CDW domain patterns in La1.875Ba0.125CuO4 (LBCO 1/8) with thermal cycling. While CDW order is only observed below 54 K, where a structural phase transition creates inequivalent Cu-O bonds, we discover remarkably reproducible CDW domain memory upon repeated cycling to far higher temperatures. That memory is only lost on cycling to 240(3) K, which recovers the four-fold symmetry of the CuO2 planes. We infer that the structural features that develop below 240 K determine the CDW pinning landscape below 54 K. This opens a view into the complex coupling between charge and lattice degrees of freedom in superconducting cuprates.

Direct observation of orbital hybridisation in a cuprate superconductor.

Project description:The minimal ingredients to explain the essential physics of layered copper-oxide (cuprates) materials remains heavily debated. Effective low-energy single-band models of the copper-oxygen orbitals are widely used because there exists no strong experimental evidence supporting multi-band structures. Here, we report angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy experiments on La-based cuprates that provide direct observation of a two-band structure. This electronic structure, qualitatively consistent with density functional theory, is parametrised by a two-orbital ([Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]) tight-binding model. We quantify the orbital hybridisation which provides an explanation for the Fermi surface topology and the proximity of the van-Hove singularity to the Fermi level. Our analysis leads to a unification of electronic hopping parameters for single-layer cuprates and we conclude that hybridisation, restraining d-wave pairing, is an important optimisation element for superconductivity.

Inverse correlation between quasiparticle mass and T c in a cuprate high-T c superconductor.

Project description:Close to a zero-temperature transition between ordered and disordered electronic phases, quantum fluctuations can lead to a strong enhancement of electron mass and to the emergence of competing phases such as superconductivity. A correlation between the existence of such a quantum phase transition and superconductivity is quite well established in some heavy fermion and iron-based superconductors, and there have been suggestions that high-temperature superconductivity in copper-oxide materials (cuprates) may also be driven by the same mechanism. Close to optimal doping, where the superconducting transition temperature T c is maximal in cuprates, two different phases are known to compete with superconductivity: a poorly understood pseudogap phase and a charge-ordered phase. Recent experiments have shown a strong increase in quasiparticle mass m* in the cuprate YBa2Cu3O7-δ as optimal doping is approached, suggesting that quantum fluctuations of the charge-ordered phase may be responsible for the high-T c superconductivity. We have tested the robustness of this correlation between m* and T c by performing quantum oscillation studies on the stoichiometric compound YBa2Cu4O8 under hydrostatic pressure. In contrast to the results for YBa2Cu3O7-δ, we find that in YBa2Cu4O8, the mass decreases as T c increases under pressure. This inverse correlation between m* and T c suggests that quantum fluctuations of the charge order enhance m* but do not enhance T c.

Oscillatory Nernst effect in Pt|ferrite|cuprate-superconductor trilayer films.

Project description:Although magnetism and superconductivity hardly coexist in a single material, recent advances in nanotechnology and spintronics have brought to light their interplay in magnetotransport in thin-film heterostructures. Here, we found a periodic oscillation of Nernst voltage with respect to magnetic fields in Pt|LiFe5O8 (Pt|LFO) bilayers grown on a cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO). At high temperatures above the superconducting transition temperature (T C ) of YBCO, spin Seebeck voltages originating in Pt|LFO layers are observed. As temperature decreases well below T C , the spin Seebeck voltage is suppressed and unconventional periodic voltage oscillation as a function of magnetic fields appears; such an oscillation emerging along the Hall direction in the superconducting state has not been observed yet. Dynamics of superconducting vortices pinned by surface precipitates seems responsible for the oscillatory Nernst effect.

High-temperature superconductor of sodalite-like clathrate hafnium hexahydride.

Project description:Hafnium hydrogen compounds have recently become the vibrant materials for structural prediction at high pressure, from their high potential candidate for high-temperature superconductors. In this work, we predict [Formula: see text] by exploiting the evolutionary searching. A high-pressure phase adopts a sodalite-like clathrate structure, showing the body-centered cubic structure with a space group of [Formula: see text]. The first-principles calculations have been used, including the zero-point energy, to investigate the probable structures up to 600 GPa, and find that the [Formula: see text] structure is thermodynamically and dynamically stable. This remarkable result of the [Formula: see text] structure shows the van Hove singularity at the Fermi level by determining the density of states. We calculate a superconducting transition temperature ([Formula: see text]) using Allen-Dynes equation and demonstrated that it exhibits superconductivity under high pressure with relatively high-[Formula: see text] of 132 K.
