Boundaries can steer active Janus spheres.

ABSTRACT: The advent of autonomous self-propulsion has instigated research towards making colloidal machines that can deliver mechanical work in the form of transport, and other functions such as sensing and cleaning. While much progress has been made in the last 10 years on various mechanisms to generate self-propulsion, the ability to steer self-propelled colloidal devices has so far been much more limited. A critical barrier in increasing the impact of such motors is in directing their motion against the Brownian rotation, which randomizes particle orientations. In this context, here we report directed motion of a specific class of catalytic motors when moving in close proximity to solid surfaces. This is achieved through active quenching of their Brownian rotation by constraining it in a rotational well, caused not by equilibrium, but by hydrodynamic effects. We demonstrate how combining these geometric constraints can be utilized to steer these active colloids along arbitrary trajectories.

Boundaries steer the contraction of active gels.

Project description:Cells set up contractile actin arrays to drive various shape changes and to exert forces to their environment. To understand their assembly process, we present here a reconstituted contractile system, comprising F-actin and myosin II filaments, where we can control the local activation of myosin by light. By stimulating different symmetries, we show that the force balancing at the boundaries determine the shape changes as well as the dynamics of the global contraction. Spatially anisotropic attachment of initially isotropic networks leads to a self-organization of highly aligned contractile fibres, being reminiscent of the order formation in muscles or stress fibres. The observed shape changes and dynamics are fully recovered by a minimal physical model.

Experimental observation of flow fields around active Janus spheres.

Project description:The phoretic mechanisms at stake in the propulsion of asymmetric colloids have been the subject of debates during the past years. In particular, the importance of electrokinetic effects on the motility of Pt-PS Janus sphere was recently discussed. Here, we probe the hydrodynamic flow field around a catalytically active colloid using particle tracking velocimetry both in the freely swimming state and when kept stationary with an external force. Our measurements provide information about the fluid velocity in the vicinity of the surface of the colloid, and confirm a mechanism for propulsion that was proposed recently. In addition to offering a unified understanding of the nonequilibrium interfacial transport processes at stake, our results open the way to a thorough description of the hydrodynamic interactions between such active particles and understanding their collective dynamics.

Bifunctional Janus Silica Spheres for Pickering Interfacial Tandem Catalysis.

Project description:Nature provides much inspiration for the design of multistep conversion processes, with numerous reactions running simultaneously and without interference in cells, for example. A key challenge in mimicking nature's strategies is to compartmentalize incompatible reagents and catalysts, for example, for tandem catalysis. Here, we present a new strategy for antagonistic catalyst compartmentalization. The synthesis of bifunctional Janus catalyst particles carrying acid and base groups on the particle's opposite patches is reported as is their application as acid-base catalysts in oil/water emulsions. The synthesis strategy involved the use of monodisperse, hydrophobic and amine-functionalized silica particles (SiO2 -NH2 -OSi(CH3 )3 ) to prepare an oil-in-water Pickering emulsion (PE) with molten paraffin wax. After solidification, the exposed patch of the silica particles was selectively etched and refunctionalized with acid groups to yield acid-base Janus particles (Janus A-B). These materials were successfully applied in biphasic Pickering interfacial catalysis for the tandem dehydration-Knoevenagel condensation of fructose to 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural-2-diethylmalonate (5-HMF-DEM) in a water/4-propylguaiacol PE. The results demonstrate the advantage of rapid extraction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), a prominent platform molecule prone to side product formation in acidic media. A simple strategy to tune the acid/base balance using PE with both Janus A-B and monofunctional SiO2 -NH2 -OSi(CH3 )3 base catalysts proved effective for antagonistic tandem catalysis.

Janus Self-Propelled Chitosan-Based Hydrogel Spheres for Rapid Bleeding Control.

Project description:Uncontrolled hemorrhage is a major cause of potentially preventable death in civilian trauma nowadays. Considerable concern has been given to the development of efficient hemostats with high blood absorption, self-propelled property, and Ca2+ release ability, for irregularly shaped and noncompressible hemorrhage. Herein, Janus self-propelled chitosan-based hydrogel with CaCO3 (J-CMH@CaCO3 ) is developed by partial ionic crosslinking of carboxylated chitosan (CCS) and Ca2+ , gravity settlement, and photopolymerization, followed by removing the shell of CCS. The obtained J-CMH@CaCO3 is further used as a hemostat powered by the internal CaCO3 and coordinated protonated tranexamic acid (J-CMH@CaCO3 /T). Bubbles are generated and detached to provide the driving force, accompanied by the release of Ca2+ . The two aspects work in synergy to accelerate clot formation, endowing the J-CMH@CaCO3 /T with excellent hemostatic efficiency. The J-CMH@CaCO3 /T presents high blood absorption, favorable blood-clotting ability, desired erythrocyte and platelet aggregation, and acceptable hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility. In rodent and rabbit bleeding models, the J-CMH@CaCO3 /T exhibits the most effective hemostasis to the best knowledge of the authors, wherein the hemorrhage is rapidly halted within 39 s. It is believed that the J-CMH@CaCO3 /T with self-propelled property opens up a new avenue to design high-performance hemostats for clinical application.

How to steer active colloids up a vertical wall.

Project description:An important challenge in active matter lies in harnessing useful global work from entities that produce work locally, e.g., via self-propulsion. We investigate here the active matter version of a classical capillary rise effect, by considering a non-phase separated sediment of self-propelled Janus colloids in contact with a vertical wall. We provide experimental evidence of an unexpected and dynamic adsorption layer at the wall. Additionally, we develop a complementary numerical model that recapitulates the experimental observations. We show that an adhesive and aligning wall enhances the pre-existing polarity heterogeneity within the bulk, enabling polar active particles to climb up a wall against gravity, effectively powering a global flux. Such steady-state flux has no equivalent in a passive wetting layer.

Catalytic mesoporous Janus nanomotors for active cargo delivery.

Project description:We report on the synergy between catalytic propulsion and mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs) for the design of Janus nanomotors as active cargo delivery systems with sizes <100 nm (40, 65, and 90 nm). The Janus asymmetry of the nanomotors is given by electron beam (e-beam) deposition of a very thin platinum (2 nm) layer on MSNPs. The chemically powered Janus nanomotors present active diffusion at low H2O2 fuel concentration (i.e., <3 wt %). Their apparent diffusion coefficient is enhanced up to 100% compared to their Brownian motion. Due to their mesoporous architecture and small dimensions, they can load cargo molecules in large quantity and serve as active nanocarriers for directed cargo delivery on a chip.

Directional terahertz holography with thermally active Janus metasurface.

Project description:Dynamic manipulation of electromagnetic (EM) waves with multiple degrees of freedom plays an essential role in enhancing information processing. Currently, an enormous challenge is to realize directional terahertz (THz) holography. Recently, it was demonstrated that Janus metasurfaces could produce distinct responses to EM waves from two opposite incident directions, making multiplexed dynamic manipulation of THz waves possible. Herein, we show that thermally activated THz Janus metasurfaces integrating with phase change materials on the meta-atoms can produce asymmetric transmission with the designed phase delays. Such reconfigurable Janus metasurfaces can achieve asymmetric focusing of THz wave and directional THz holography with free-space image projections, and particularly the information can be manipulated via temperature and incident THz wave direction. This work not only offers a common strategy for realizing the reconfigurability of Janus metasurfaces, but also shows possible applications in THz optical information encryption, data storage, and smart windows.

Surface roughness-induced speed increase for active Janus micromotors.

Membrane active Janus-oligomers of β<sup>3</sup>-peptides.

Project description:Self-assembling peptides offer a versatile set of tools for bottom-up construction of supramolecular biomaterials. Among these compounds, non-natural peptidic foldamers experience increased focus due to their structural variability and lower sensitivity to enzymatic degradation. However, very little is known about their membrane properties and complex oligomeric assemblies - key areas for biomedical and technological applications. Here we designed short, acyclic β3-peptide sequences with alternating amino acid stereoisomers to obtain non-helical molecules having hydrophilic charged residues on one side, and hydrophobic residues on the other side, with the N-terminus preventing formation of infinite fibrils. Our results indicate that these β-peptides form small oligomers both in water and in lipid bilayers and are stabilized by intermolecular hydrogen bonds. In the presence of model membranes, they either prefer the headgroup regions or they insert between the lipid chains. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations suggest the formation of two-layered bundles with their side chains facing opposite directions when compared in water and in model membranes. Analysis of the MD calculations showed hydrogen bonds inside each layer, however, not between the layers, indicating a dynamic assembly. Moreover, the aqueous form of these oligomers can host fluorescent probes as well as a hydrophobic molecule similarly to e.g. lipid transfer proteins. For the tested, peptides the mixed chirality pattern resulted in similar assemblies despite sequential differences. Based on this, it is hoped that the presented molecular framework will inspire similar oligomers with diverse functionality.

Symmetrical Catalytic Colloids Display Janus-Like Active Brownian Particle Motion.

Project description:Catalytic Janus colloids, with one hemi-sphere covered by a hydrogen peroxide reduction catalyst such as platinum, represent one of the most experimentally explored examples of self-motile active colloid systems. This paper comparatively investigates the motile behavior of symmetrical catalytic colloids produced by a solution-based metal salt reduction process. Despite the significant differences in the distribution of catalytic activity, this study finds that the motion produced by symmetrical colloids is equivalent to that previously reported for Janus colloids. It also shows that introducing a Janus structure to the symmetrical colloids via masking does not significantly modify their motion. These findings could indicate that very subtle variations in surface reactivity can be sufficient to produce Janus-like active Brownian particle-type motion, or that a symmetry-breaking phenomena is present. The study will consequently motivate fresh theoretical attention and also demonstrate a straightforward route to access large quantities of motile active colloids, which are expected to show subtly different phenomenology compared to those with Janus structures.
