Open Data in Global Environmental Research: The Belmont Forum's Open Data Survey.

ABSTRACT: This paper presents the findings of the Belmont Forum's survey on Open Data which targeted the global environmental research and data infrastructure community. It highlights users' perceptions of the term "open data", expectations of infrastructure functionalities, and barriers and enablers for the sharing of data. A wide range of good practice examples was pointed out by the respondents which demonstrates a substantial uptake of data sharing through e-infrastructures and a further need for enhancement and consolidation. Among all policy responses, funder policies seem to be the most important motivator. This supports the conclusion that stronger mandates will strengthen the case for data sharing.

Project description:This paper describes OSeMOSYS Global, an open-source, open-data model generator for creating global electricity system models for an active global modelling community. This version of the model generator is freely available and can be used to create interconnected electricity system models for both the entire globe and for any geographically diverse subset of the globe. Compared to other existing global models, OSeMOSYS Global allows for full user flexibility in determining the time slice structure and geographic scope of the model and datasets, and is built using the widely used fully open-source OSeMOSYS energy system model. This paper describes the data sources, structure and use of OSeMOSYS Global, and provides illustrative workflow results.

Data Science in Environmental Health Research.

Project description:Purpose of Review:Data science is an exploding trans-disciplinary field that aims to harness the power of data to gain information or insights on researcher-defined topics of interest. In this paper we review how data science can help advance environmental health research. Recent Findings:We discuss the concepts computationally scalable handling of Big Data and the design of efficient research data platforms, and how data science can provide solutions for methodological challenges in environmental health research, such as high-dimensional outcomes and exposures, and prediction models. Finally, we discuss tools for reproducible research. Summary:In this paper we present opportunities to improve environmental research capabilities by embracing data science, and the pitfalls that environmental health researchers should avoid when employing data scientific approaches. Throughout the paper, we emphasize the need for environmental health researchers to collaborate more closely with biostatisticians and data scientists to ensure robust and interpretable results.

International Social Survey Program (ISSP) environment dataset modules: Open data and its applicability in PLS-SEM Research.

Project description:This data article is based on the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) Environment III Dataset and linked to a publication in Ecological Economics, in which we developed a model for explaining and predicting sustainable consumption behavior of Europeans using data of nine participating countries. In our study, we find that sustainable consumption behavior can be associated with environmental concern, which is influenced by increased levels of environmental knowledge and environmental risk perception. In this companion data article, we describe the usefulness, value, and relevance of the open ISSP dataset and take our linked article as an example. The data are publicly available via the GESIS-website (gesis.org). The dataset consists of individual-based interviews on the respondents' perceptions regarding a variety of social matters, such as the environment, which we argue is especially suitable for PLS-SEM applications (for example, to conduct cross-sectional analyses).

gcCov: Linked open data for global coronavirus studies

Project description:Impact Statement We present a method of mapping data from publicly available genomics and publication resources to the Resource Description Framework (RDF) and implement a server to publish linked open data (LOD). As one of the largest and most comprehensive semantic databases about coronaviruses, the resulted gcCov database demonstrates the capability of using data in the LOD framework to promote correlations between genotypes and phenotypes. These correlations will be helpful for future research on fundamental viral mechanisms and drug and vaccine designs. These LOD with 62,168,127 semantic triplets and their visualizations are freely accessible through gcCov at https://nmdc.cn/gccov/.

Ecodatacube.eu: analysis-ready open environmental data cube for Europe.

Project description:The article describes the production steps and accuracy assessment of an analysis-ready, open-access European data cube consisting of 2000-2020+ Landsat data, 2017-2021+ Sentinel-2 data and a 30 m resolution digital terrain model (DTM). The main purpose of the data cube is to make annual continental-scale spatiotemporal machine learning tasks accessible to a wider user base by providing a spatially and temporally consistent multidimensional feature space. This has required systematic spatiotemporal harmonization, efficient compression, and imputation of missing values. Sentinel-2 and Landsat reflectance values were aggregated into four quarterly averages approximating the four seasons common in Europe (winter, spring, summer and autumn), as well as the 25th and 75th percentile, in order to retain intra-seasonal variance. Remaining missing data in the Landsat time-series was imputed with a temporal moving window median (TMWM) approach. An accuracy assessment shows TMWM performs relatively better in Southern Europe and lower in mountainous regions such as the Scandinavian Mountains, the Alps, and the Pyrenees. We quantify the usability of the different component data sets for spatiotemporal machine learning tasks with a series of land cover classification experiments, which show that models utilizing the full feature space (30 m DTM, 30 m Landsat, 30 m and 10 m Sentinel-2) yield the highest land cover classification accuracy, with different data sets improving the results for different land cover classes. The data sets presented in the article are part of the EcoDataCube platform, which also hosts open vegetation, soil, and land use/land cover (LULC) maps created. All data sets are available under CC-BY license as Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFFs (ca. 12 TB in size) through SpatioTemporal Asset Catalog (STAC) and the EcoDataCube data portal.

Skills and Knowledge for Data-Intensive Environmental Research.

Project description:The scale and magnitude of complex and pressing environmental issues lend urgency to the need for integrative and reproducible analysis and synthesis, facilitated by data-intensive research approaches. However, the recent pace of technological change has been such that appropriate skills to accomplish data-intensive research are lacking among environmental scientists, who more than ever need greater access to training and mentorship in computational skills. Here, we provide a roadmap for raising data competencies of current and next-generation environmental researchers by describing the concepts and skills needed for effectively engaging with the heterogeneous, distributed, and rapidly growing volumes of available data. We articulate five key skills: (1) data management and processing, (2) analysis, (3) software skills for science, (4) visualization, and (5) communication methods for collaboration and dissemination. We provide an overview of the current suite of training initiatives available to environmental scientists and models for closing the skill-transfer gap.

Availability of open data for spatial public health research.

Project description:Background: Preventive and health-promoting policies can guide (place- and space-specific) factors influencing human health, such as the physical and social environment. Required is data that can lead to a more nuanced decision-making process and identify both existing and future challenges. Along with the rise of new technologies, and thus the multiple opportunities to use and process data, new options have emerged to measure and monitor factors that affect health. Thus, in recent years, several gateways for open data (including governmental and geospatial data) have become available. At present, an increasing number of research institutions as well as (state and private) companies and citizens' initiatives are providing data. However, there is a lack of overviews covering the range of such offerings regarding health. In particular, for geographically differentiated analyses, there are challenges related to data availability at different spatial levels and the growing number of data providers. Objectives: This paper aims to provide an overview of open data resources available in the context of space and health to date. It also describes the technical and legal conditions for using open data. Results: An up-to-date summary of results including information on relevant data access and terms of use is provided along with a web visualization. All data is available for further use under an open license.
