Denopelopia amicitia, a new Tanypodinae from Brazil (Diptera, Chironomidae).

ABSTRACT: A new species of Denopelopia from Brazil is described based on adult male and pupa. The male of the new species can be distinguished from all other species of the genus by the genitalia and fore-tibial spur morphology. The pupa is very similar to those of Denopelopia atria, but it can be distinguished by the absence of distinct constrictions in the respiratory atrium of the thoracic horn. Generic diagnosis to male and pupa of Denopelopia is emended and keys to male and pupae of known species are provided.

Project description:Poxyaibamberus Andersen & Dantas, gen. nov. is erected based on the males of two species, P.jamanximensis Andersen & Dantas, sp. nov. from Jamanxim National Park, Pará State, Brazil, and P.ubajarensis Andersen & Dantas, sp. nov. from Ubajara National Park, Ceará State, Brazil. Both species have a comparatively short and wide head, with large eyes and short, five-segmented palps; a strong subapical seta on the ultimate flagellomere; scalpellate acrostichals; no setae on the wing veins except for one seta on the brachiolum; a long costal extension; and a large triangular anal point and a very long heel on the gonostylus. The systematic position of the new genus is briefly discussed.

Project description:Two new species of Stenochironomus Kieffer (Diptera: Chironomidae: Chironominae), Stenochironomusbrevissimus sp. n. and Stenochironomuslinanensis sp. n., are described from China and the male imagines are illustrated. Stenochironomusbrevissimus sp. n. can be separated from the so far known species by having very short and small, spatulate superior volsella with two long setae, whereas Stenochironomuslinanensis sp. n. is easily separated from the other species of Stenochironomus by the following characters: wings transparent, body yellow, superior volsella finger-like, with nine long setae, elongated inferior volsella with four long setae and one well developed terminal spine; tergite IX with 10-15 long setae medially. A key to the males of Stenochironomus occurring in China is given.

New species, a new combination, and DNA barcodes of <i>Parachironomus</i> Lenz, 1921 (Diptera, Chironomidae).

Project description:The genus Parachironomus has a cosmopolitan distribution including 85 valid described species worldwide. Species records and studies of the genus in the Tibetan Plateau are scarce. In this study, the genus Parachironomus from China is revised and two new species, Parachironomuswangi Liu & Lin, sp. nov. and Parachironomusnankaiensis Liu & Lin, sp. nov., are described based on adult morphology and molecular data. Paracladopelmademissum Yan, Wang & Bu is placed in the genus Parachironomus as a new combination. A neighbor-joining tree was reconstructed based on all known ParachironomusCOI DNA barcodes. A key to adult males of the genus Parachironomus from China is also provided.

Comparative Mitogenomic Analyses of Tanypodinae (Diptera: Chironomidae).

Project description:Tanypodinae, a highly diverse subfamily within Chironomidae (Diptera), has been poorly represented in mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) databases, with only a limited number of complete or partial sequences available. To address this gap, we present the first complete mitogenome sequences of 16 Tanypodinae species and 1 Podonominae species. By integrating these novel data with previously published chironomid mitogenomes, we conducted a comprehensive comparative mitogenomic analysis of 21 Tanypodinae species. Our results reveal that Tanypodinae mitogenomes maintain a conserved structural organization, preserving the ancestral insect gene arrangement. The nucleotide composition exhibits significant bias, with the control region demonstrating the highest A + T content among all genomic regions. Evolutionary analysis indicates that all protein-coding genes (PCGs) are subject to purifying selection, with ATP8 exhibiting the most rapid evolutionary rate. Phylogenetic reconstruction based on PCG amino acid sequences delineates seven well-supported clades within Tanypodinae, corresponding to the tribes Pentaneurini, Natarsiini, Procladiini, Tanypodini, Clinotanypodini, Macropelopiini, and Anatopyniini. These findings significantly advance our understanding of mitogenomic architecture and provide critical insights into the phylogenetic relationships within Tanypodinae.
