Short range magnetic exchange interaction favors ferroelectricity.

ABSTRACT: Multiferroics, where two or more ferroic order parameters coexist, is one of the hottest fields in condensed matter physics and materials science. To search multiferroics, currently most researches are focused on frustrated magnets, which usually have complicated magnetic structure and low magnetic ordering temperature. Here, we argue that actually simple interatomic magnetic exchange interaction already contains a driving force for ferroelectricity, thus providing a new microscopic mechanism for the coexistence and strong coupling between ferroelectricity and magnetism. We demonstrate this mechanism by showing that even the simplest antiferromagnetic insulator like MnO, could display a magnetically induced ferroelectricity under a biaxial strain. In addition, we show that such mechanism also exists in the most important single phase multiferroics, i.e. BiFeO3, suggesting that this mechanism is ubiquitous in systems with superexchange interaction.

Crystallization processes in a nonvibrating magnetic granular system with short range repulsive interaction.

Project description:Applying an unsteady magnetic field to a 2D nonvibrating magnetic granular system induces a random motion in the steel beads with characteristics analogous to that of molecules in a fluid. We investigate the structural characteristics of the solid-like structures generated by different quenching conditions. The applied field is generated by the superposition of a constant field and a collinear sinusoidal field. The system reaches a quasi steady state in which the effective temperature is proportional to the amplitude of the applied field. By reducing the effective temperature at different rates, different cooling rates are produced. A slight inclination of the surface allows us to investigate the effects of small particle concentration gradients. The formation of a wide and rich variety of condensed solid structures, from gel-like and glass-like structures up to crystalline structures, is observed and depends on the cooling rate. We focus our attention on the crystallization process and found this process to be a collective phenomenon. We discuss our results in terms of the measured time evolution of the mean squared displacement, the effective diffusion coefficient, and the radial distribution function.

Long-range magnetic interactions and proximity effects in an amorphous exchange-spring magnet.

Project description:Low-dimensional magnetic heterostructures are a key element of spintronics, where magnetic interactions between different materials often define the functionality of devices. Although some interlayer exchange coupling mechanisms are by now well established, the possibility of direct exchange coupling via proximity-induced magnetization through non-magnetic layers is typically ignored due to the presumed short range of such proximity effects. Here we show that magnetic order can be induced throughout a 40-nm-thick amorphous paramagnetic layer through proximity to ferromagnets, mediating both exchange-spring magnet behaviour and exchange bias. Furthermore, Monte Carlo simulations show that nearest-neighbour magnetic interactions fall short in describing the observed effects and long-range magnetic interactions are needed to capture the extent of the induced magnetization. The results highlight the importance of considering the range of interactions in low-dimensional heterostructures and how magnetic proximity effects can be used to obtain new functionality.

New mechanism of kinetic exchange interaction induced by strong magnetic anisotropy.

Project description:It is well known that the kinetic exchange interaction between single-occupied magnetic orbitals (s-s) is always antiferromagnetic, while between single- and double-occupied orbitals (s-d) is always ferromagnetic and much weaker. Here we show that the exchange interaction between strongly anisotropic doublets of lanthanides, actinides and transition metal ions with unquenched orbital momentum contains a new s-d kinetic contribution equal in strength with the s-s one. In non-collinear magnetic systems, this s-d kinetic mechanism can cause an overall ferromagnetic exchange interaction which can become very strong for transition metal ions. These findings are fully confirmed by DFT based analysis of exchange interaction in several Ln(3+) complexes.

Displacive-type ferroelectricity from magnetic correlations within spin-chain.

Project description:Observation of ferroelectricity among non-d(0) systems, which was believed for a long time an unrealistic concept, led to various proposals for the mechanisms to explain the same (i.e. magnetically induced ferroelectricity) during last decade. Here, we provide support for ferroelectricity of a displacive-type possibly involving magnetic ions due to short-range magnetic correlations within a spin-chain, through the demonstration of magnetoelectric coupling in a Haldane spin-chain compound Er2BaNiO5 well above its Néel temperature of (TN = ) 32 K. There is a distinct evidence for electric polarization setting in near 60 K around which there is an evidence for short-range magnetic correlations from other experimental methods. Raman studies also establish a softening of phonon modes in the same temperature (T) range and T-dependent x-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns also reveal lattice parameters anomalies. Density-functional theory based calculations establish a displacive component (similar to d(0)-ness) as the root-cause of ferroelectricity from (magnetic) NiO6 chain, thereby offering a new route to search for similar materials near room temperature to enable applications.

Long-range magnetic interaction of native defects in transition metal dichalcogenides.

Project description:Recent experiments have revealed weak ferromagnetism in pristine transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), although the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this work, we investigate the possibility of native defects inducing ferromagnetism in TMDs, specifically WS2 and MoS2. Among the various native defects, we have identified that cation antisites exhibit localized magnetic moments of 2μ B. These localized moments tend toward ferromagnetic ordering via magnetic interactions facilitated by local spin density oscillations. While the strength of the magnetic interactions is comparable to that of magnetic dopants in TMD, they are significantly weakened when the distance between the two antisites exceeds 9 Å. Therefore, our results suggest that native-defect-induced ferromagnetism in TMD is feasible only in heavily defective TMD samples.

Dual nature of magnetic nanoparticle dispersions enables control over short-range attraction and long-range repulsion interactions.

Project description:Competition between attractive and repulsive interactions drives the formation of complex phases in colloidal suspensions. A major experimental challenge lies in decoupling independent roles of attractive and repulsive forces in governing the equilibrium morphology and long-range spatial distribution of assemblies. Here, we uncover the 'dual nature' of magnetic nanoparticle dispersions, particulate and continuous, enabling control of the short-range attraction and long-range repulsion (SALR) between suspended microparticles. We show that non-magnetic microparticles suspended in an aqueous magnetic nanoparticle dispersion simultaneously experience a short-range depletion attraction due to the particulate nature of the fluid in competition with an in situ tunable long-range magnetic dipolar repulsion attributed to the continuous nature of the fluid. The study presents an experimental platform for achieving in situ control over SALR between colloids leading to the formation of reconfigurable structures of unusual morphologies, which are not obtained using external fields or depletion interactions alone.

Self-consistent solution for the magnetic exchange interaction mediated by a superconductor.

Project description:We theoretically determine the magnetic exchange interaction between two ferromagnets coupled by a superconductor using a tight-binding lattice model. The main purpose of this study is to determine how the self-consistently determined superconducting state influences the exchange interaction and the preferred ground-state of the system, including the role of impurity scattering. We find that the superconducting state eliminates RKKY-like oscillations for a sufficiently large superconducting gap, making the anti-parallel orientation the ground state of the system. Interestingly, the superconducting gap is larger in the parallel configuration than in the anti-parallel configuration, giving a larger superconducting condensation energy, even when the preferred ground state is anti-parallel. We also show that increasing the impurity concentration in the superconductor causes the exchange interaction to decrease, likely due to an increasing localization of the mediating quasiparticles in the superconductor.

Framework nucleic acid strategy enables closer microbial contact for programming short-range interaction.

Project description:Programming precise and specific microbial intraspecies or interspecies interaction would be powerful for microbial metabolic regulation, signal pathway mechanism understanding, and therapeutic application. However, it is still of great challenge to develop a simple and universal method to artificially encode the microbial interactions without interfering with the intrinsic cell metabolism. Here, we proposed an extensible and flexible framework nucleic acid strategy for encoding the specific and precise microbial interactions upon self-assembly. With this spatial manipulation tool, we propose the microbial spatial heterogeneity and short-range interaction mechanism that the microbial assembly facilitates the gene expressions of the surface sensors including flagella and pili in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, leading to a more sensitive response to quorum sensing. The microbial interaction programming strategy proposed in this work is expected to provide a powerful and designable nanoplatform for better understanding of distance-dependent bacterial communication networks.

Magnetic exchange interaction between unpaired π- and d-electrons in nanographene-metal coordination complexes.

Project description:The combination of open-shell nanographenes (NGs) and magnetic transition metals holds great promise for generating various new quantum phases applicable in spintronics and quantum information technologies. However, a crucial aspect in accomplishing this is to comprehend the magnetic exchange interactions between unpaired π- and d-electrons, a topic that has been seldom addressed. In this study, we focus on magnetic π-d exchange interactions between open-shell NGs and a magnetic coordination center of Fe or Co by employing scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. We synthesize two sets of NG-metal coordination complexes on a Au(111) substrate, secured by coordination bonds of carboxyl acid-Fe (Co). Through analysis of the excitation spectra, we observe a characteristic exchange coupling of 9 meV (5 meV) between the unpaired π-electron and the Fe (Co) d-shell electrons. Our experimental findings are qualitatively in agreement with multiconfigurational quantum chemistry calculations. This work provides evidence that a substantial magnetic exchange coupling can be achieved and engineered in metal-organic coordination systems, paving the way for designing and customizing extended radical metal-organic frameworks with precisely tailored magnetic properties.

Short-Range Correlated Magnetic Core-Shell CrO₂/Cr₂O₃ Nanorods: Experimental Observations and Theoretical Considerations.

Project description:With the evolution of synthesis and the critical characterization of core-shell nanostructures, short-range magnetic correlation is of prime interest in employing their properties to develop novel devices and widespread applications. In this regard, a novel approach of the magnetic core-shell saturated magnetization (CSSM) cylinder model solely based on the contribution of saturated magnetization in one-dimensional CrO₂/Cr₂O₃ core-shell nanorods (NRs) has been developed and applied for the determination of core-diameter and shell-thickness. The nanosized effect leads to a short-range magnetic correlation of ferromagnetic core-CrO₂ extracted from CSSM, which can be explained using finite size scaling method. The outcome of this study is important in terms of utilizing magnetic properties for the critical characterization of core-shell nanomagnetic materials.
