Liparis aphylla (Malaxideae, Orchidaceae), a new leafless record from Peru.

ABSTRACT: Liparis aphylla G.A.Romero & Garay was previously known only from two herbarium specimens collected in 1945 and 1977 in Ecuador and Colombia, respectively. This little-known species is hereby reported for the first time for Peru. An updated description, line illustration, color photographs and distribution map of Liparis aphylla, as well as an identification key to the Peruvian species of Liparis are provided.

Decumbentes. In addition, we report Liparis brachystalix Rchb.f. for the first time for the orchid flora of Peru, and select a lectotype for its synonym, L. commelinoides Schltr.

Three new species of Liparis s.l. (Orchidaceae: Malaxideae) from Southwest China based on morphological characters and phylogenetic evidence.

Project description:Liparis aureolabella and L. mengziensis, two new species from the karst region of southwestern China, and L. bingzhongluoensis, a new species from montane region in Yunnan, are described and illustrated. L. aureolabella is easily distinguished from its relatives by having abaxially purple leave with purple reticulate veins prominent adaxially, a lip auriculate at base, and falcate-lanceolate pollinia. Liparis mengziensis is closely related to L. petiolata and L. auriculata, but differs from them by having an ovate to broadly ovate leaf, purple lip and apex connate along the margins. Liparis bingzhongluoensis is similar to Liparis nanlingensis, but the new species is characterized by having a lip with two transparent ridges on its disc, longitudinally concave basal callus and triangular column wings. Phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid matK sequences showed that L. aureolabella and L. mengziensis are nested with L. petiolata or L. auriculata in a monophyletic clade. L. bingzhongluoensis is sister to a clade formed by L. nanlingensis, L. tsii, L. sasakii and L. krameri. Moreover, morphological comparisons strongly support that the three species as separated species newly to science.

A new species of Liparis (Orchidaceae, Epidendroideae, Malaxidinae) from the Bosque de Proteccion Alto Mayo, San Martin, Peru

Project description:Abstract Liparisaltomayoënsissp. nov. is described, illustrated, and tentatively assigned to the Neotropical section Decumbentes on the basis of its branching, prostrate rhizomes and upright stems bearing several leaves. Vegetatively, the new species is distinguished by its short, upward stems bearing 3–6 leaves, these with undulate, translucent margins and reticulate, prominent veining on the upper surface. Florally, it is distinctive in the labellum with fleshy basal one-half provided with a central, rounded cavity limited on each side by a prominent, bilobulate ridge and apically by a lunate ridge, and membranaceous, trilobulate apical one-half deflexed ca. 90°. In contrast with other species of section Decumbentes, in which fruit formation is infrequent, in L.altomayoënsis a high proportion (⁓50–100%) of flowers develop into a fruit; in some flowers the pollinaria rotate and contact the stigma, apparently resulting in at least facultative self-pollination. The main differences among the six species of L.sectionDecumbentes hitherto known are contrasted in a dichotomous key. The new species is known only from three populations located in the Bosque de Protección Alto Mayo, on the Amazonian slope of the Andes in northeastern Peru but appears to be under no foreseeable threats.

Project description:Bulbophyllumchrysolabium, a new species belonging to section Racemosae from Yunnan, China is described and illustrated. The species is related to B.orientale and B.morphologorum, but differs by having the following set of characters: obliquely broadly-based triangular petals with a long filiform apex; lip densely glandular papillose and conspicuously ciliolate along margins; lip auricles well developed, narrowly falcate, tapering to a long sharp point at the apex; stelidia subulate and twisted inwards, slightly exceeding operculum. The conservation status of B.chrysolabium is assessed and taxonomic notes are provided.

Bulbophyllum reflexipetalum (Orchidaceae, Epidendroideae, Malaxideae), a new species from Xizang, China.

Project description:Bulbophyllum reflexipetalum, a new species from Motuo County, Southeast Xizang, China, is described and illustrated here. This new species belongs to Bulbophyllum sect. Umbellata Bentham & J. D. Hooker, and it is morphologically similar to B. umbellatum Lindley, B. guttulatum (J. D. Hooker) N. P. Balakrishnan and B. salweenensis X.H. Jin, but is distinguished from them by having reflexed petals, base of dorsal sepal with 1 dentate on each side, lip with significantly revolute margin, adaxially with dark brown spots or patches and one longitudinal groove.

A remarkable new species of Liparis (Orchidaceae) from China and its phylogenetic implications.

Project description:In the present study, we formally describe Liparis pingxiangensis as a new species from Guangxi, China on the basis of morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses. It is easily distinguished from closely related species by strongly curved column without column wings, and broadly rhombic-elliptic lip with 2 uncinate calli at the base. In particular, it differs most markedly from its congeners in possessing two pollinia attached by long and prominent caudicles (not stipes), to a distinct sticky disc. This type of pollinarium, as far as we know, is not found in any other species of Liparis, and is also unique among the orchids with waxy pollinia. We then proceeded to a phylogenetic analysis to ascertain the systematic position of this enigmatic species. Molecular study based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid matK DNA sequence data supports L. pingxiangensis as a distinct species, which forms an independent lineage sister to L. nervosa and its allies (93% BS, 1.00 BPP). In the light of previous work, the findings have important implications for a better understanding of the well-supported pattern mainly based on vegetative features in Malaxideae.

The complete chloroplast genome of Stichorkis gibbosa (Orchidaceae: Malaxideae).

Project description:Stichorkis gibbosa is a rare orchid species of the tribe Malaxideae mainly distributed in tropical Asia. This is the only species of the genus Stichorkis Thouars which has been reported to occur in China. Despite the importance of this genus, previous molecular studies based on few markers have resulted in limited phylogenetic resolution. With the decline of habitats, the wild population of S. gibbosa has decreased in recent years. In this study, we first reported the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of S. gibbosa. The entire cp genome was determined to be 158,056 bp in length with overall GC content of 36.9%, containing a pair of inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 27,006 bp, separated by a large single-copy (LSC, 86,280 bp) and a small single-copy (SSC, 17,764 bp). A total of 133 unique genes were annotated, including 87 protein-coding genes, 38 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. The phylogenetic tree indicated that S. gibbosa was a sister group of the genus Oberonia and the epiphytic Liparis alliance with strong support.

The complete chloroplast genome of Liparis nervosa (Orchidaceae).

Project description:Liparis nervosa, a terrestrial orchid was widely used as a traditional medicinal plant in China. In this study, we assembled the complete chloroplast genome of L. nervosa using Illumina sequencing data. The whole genome is 158,716 bp, contains a large single-copy region (LSC 86,010 bp), a small single-copy region (SSC 18,276 bp), and a pair of inverted repeats (IR 27,215 bp). The complete genome has 132 genes, including 77 protein-coding genes, 38 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. In addition, a maximum-likelihood phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that L. nervosa was most closely related to Oberonia japonica. This work provides a theoretical basis for the development of conservation strategies of L. nervosa.

Project description:Liparis bootanensis is an epiphytic orchid distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, and has been listed as an endangered species in the Wildlife Conservation List. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome of L. bootanensis was assembled using Illumina sequencing data. The complete chloroplast (cp) genome is 158,325 bp in length, including a pair of invert repeats (IRA and IRB) regions of 26,700 bp, large single-copy (LSC) region of 86,584 bp, and small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,341 bp. The chloroplast genome contains 133 genes, including 83 protein-coding genes, 38 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that Oberonia japonica was closely related to L. bootanensis based on 17chloroplast genomes matrix of Orchidaceae.

Project description:The Orchidaceae contains numerous species with great ecological and economic values. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome of Liparis japonica was presented by next-generation sequencing technologies. The cpDNA is 152,084 bp in length with a large single copy region (LSC) of 85,398 bp, a small single copy region (SSC) of 14,774 bp, and a pair of inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 25,956 bp. It contains 132 genes, including 79 protein-coding genes, 38 tRNA genes, 8 rRNA genes, and 7 pseudogenes. The overall GC content is 37.0%, while the corresponding values in the LSC, SSC, and IR region are 34.3, 30.0, 43.5%, respectively. The phylogenetic analysis shows that Liparis japonica is sister to Liparis loeselii and the genus Liparis is closely related to Dendrobium.
