Callicarpa bachmaensis Soejima & Tagane (Lamiaceae), a new species from Bach Ma National Park in Thua Thien Hue Province, Central Vietnam.

ABSTRACT: A new species, Callicarpa bachmaensis Soejima & Tagane, sp. nov., is described and illustrated from Bach Ma National Park in Thua Thien Hue Province, Central Vietnam. This species has a characteristic liana habit, white corolla, and narrowly elliptic to narrowly lanceolate, entire, occasionally subequal leaves, by which it is clearly distinguished from the other previously known species of this genus.

A comprehensive procedure to develop water quality index: A case study to the Huong river in Thua Thien Hue province, Central Vietnam.

Project description:This work proposed a novel procedure of Water Quality Index (WQI) development that could be used for practical applications on a local or regional scale, based on available monitoring data. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to the monthly data of 11 water quality parameters (pH, conductivity (EC), total suspended solid (TSS), dissolved oxygen (DO), five -day biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia (N-NH4), nitrate (N-NO3), phosphate (P-PO4), total coliform, and total dissolved iron monitored at 11 sites at Huong river in the years 2014-2016. From the PCA, the three extracted principal components explained 67% of the total variance of original variables. From the set of communality values, the weight (wi) for each parameter was determined. Linear sub-index functions were established based on the permissible limits from the National Technical Regulations on Surface Water Quality set up by the Vietnam Environment Agency (VEA) to derive the sub-index (qi) for each parameter. The multiplicative formula that is the product of the sub-indices (qi) raised to the respective weights (wi), was used for calculation of the final WQI values. The proposed index (WQI) was then applied to the river with quarterly data of the 11 parameters monitored at ten sites in the years 2017-2020. The WQI representatively reflected the actual status of the river overall water quality, of which 97.8% of the WQI values belonged to grades of EXCELLENT and GOOD, and 2.2% of grade MODERATE. Comparison between the river water quality evaluations resulting from the developed WQI with the WQI adopted by National Sanitation Foundation (NSF-WQI) and the index issued by Vietnam Environment Agency (VN-WQI) indicated that the proposed WQI was more suitable for river quality assessment.

To stay or re-migrate after the pandemic shock? Labor re-migration intention to the coastal areas of Thua Thien Hue province in Vietnam.

Project description:This study applied the extended theory of planned behavior (ETPB) to explore factors that shape the behavioral intention of migrant laborers returning to the coastal region of Thừa Thiên Huế province during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic to remigrate. Data collection included 210 interviews with returned migrants aged 18 and above in 4 coastal communes of Thừa Thiên Huế province, in-depth interviews (8 key informants) and a group discussion (5 persons). Exploratory factor analysis and a multivariate linear regression model were applied to analyze the data. Results showed that in addition to individual socio-demographic characteristics (i.e. level of education, age, income level and sex), attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and perceived risk were also determinant factors of migrants' intention to remigrate. This research suggested that in order to build resilience of rural migration workers, related departments should seriously consider the following recommendations: (i) raise awareness and encourage young rural people to complete their education and necessary skills; (ii) organize related psychological training programs for rural laborers; (iii) raise awareness about the necessity to participate in social insurance; (iv) promote rural job creation programs suitable for low education and low-skilled rural laborers; (v) raise awareness for local people, particularly school children, about the value and opportunities of being smart farmers in the context of 4.0 technology and social risks at the destination for low education and low-skilled laborers; (vi) digitalize migration labor management and provide digital information services regarding job opportunities for rural laborers.

Popowia bachmaensis (Annonaceae), a new species from Bach Ma National Park, Central Vietnam.

Project description:A new species, Popowia bachmaensis Ngoc, Tagane & Yahara, sp. nov. is described from Bach Ma National Park in Thua Thien Hue Province, Central Vietnam. This species is morphologically similar to Popowia pisocarpa (Blume) Endl. ex Walp., but can be readily distinguished from it by its lower stems, smaller leaves, shorter flowering pedicels, shorter carpels, longer sepals and inner petals. A detailed description, comprising illustrations, and supplemented with DNA barcodes of the two regions of rbcL and matK, are provided.

Phylogenetic analysis of Anguilla marmorata population in Thua Thien Hue, Vietnam based on the cytochrome C oxidase I (COI) gene fragments.

Project description:The giant mottled eel is a species with high commercial value so overfishing, river management, and water pollution have negatively affected its movement and population numbers. Anguilla marmorata (eel) was listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book 2007 with a description of Vulnerability. This study used a barcode technique to analyze molecular characteristics and build genetic plants based on the cytochrome c oxidase I gene segment isolated from the mitochondrial genome of 48 individuals of A. marmorata collected in five different ecological regions of Thua Thien Hue, Vietnam. The isolated the cytochrome c oxidase I sequence has a length of 843 nucleotides, four base nucleotides of 30.03% Thymine, 25.15% Cytosine, 27.49% Adenine, and 17.43% Guanine. The percentage of Guanine + Cytosine content (42.58%) is acceptable, lower than the Adenine + Thymine content. The replacement capacity of Adenine and Guanine is 22.45% highest, the ratio between Thymine and Guanine; Cytosine and Guanine are the lowest at 2.72%. The establishment of genetically modified plants has shown the high genetic similarity of individuals in eel populations in Thua Thien Hue. The population of Anguilla marmorata eels in Thua Thien Hue, Vietnam is divided into two separate groups that are guided by the migration process and specific ecological. This is particularly important in building strategies to conserve and develop the gene for eel in Vietnam and Thua Thien Hue.

Effectiveness of a Health Talk Education Program on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Knowledge, Attitudes, and Intentions to Vaccinate Children Among Mothers of Secondary School Boys in Thua Thien Hue Province, Vietnam.

Project description:Background:The incidence of cancer related to human papillomavirus (HPV) that affects males is rising throughout the world. Currently, Vietnamese boys are typically not vaccinated against HPV while girls are. There are only a few studies pertaining to HPV vaccination among boys in Asian countries where parents play the most important role in deciding on such vaccination. We present here the first study to assess the effectiveness of a health talk education program on HPV knowledge, attitudes and intention to vaccinate children among mothers of secondary school students in the Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam. Methods:This was a quasi-experimental study. Two secondary schools in the Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam were selected by purposive sampling. A total of 288 mothers of male students of two secondary schools were selected to participate, n=144 as controls and n=144 for the intervention arm for every school. Mothers of male students were invited to answer interview questions. The questionnaires covered social demographics, health history, HPV knowledge and HPV vaccination perception and intention. The study ran from September 2019 to January 2020. Results:In total, 279 mothers finished the questionnaires. At the baseline, HPV knowledge in both groups was at the same level (p>0.05). One month after receiving the HPV health talk education, mothers of male students had much higher HPV knowledge than those who did not receive such HPV health talk education. The intervention group also had a much higher HPV vaccination intention than the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion:Health education was shown in this study to be an effective method to increase HPV knowledge and vaccination intention among mothers of boys in Vietnam.

The complete chloroplast genome of Callicarpa siongsaiensis Metcalf (Lamiaceae) from Fujian Province, China: genome structure and phylogenetic analysis.

Project description:Callicarpa siongsaiensis Metcalf is a drought resistance shrub with ornamental potential. In this study, Illumina sequencing data were used to assemble the complete chloroplast genome of Callicarpa siongsaiensis. The length of the circular genome is 154,144 bp. It contains a total of 130 genes, including 87 protein-coding, 36 tRNA, and seven rRNA genes. The GC content of the chloroplast genome of C. siongsaiensis is 38.09%. The phylogenetic analysis fully resolved C. siongsaiensis in a clade with C. formosana.

The complete chloroplast genome of Callicarpa dichotoma (Lour.) K.Koch (Lamiaceae).

Project description:Callicarpa dichotoma (Lour.) K.Koch is a shrub species with distribution from East Asia to Southeast Asia. We assembled and annotated for the first time the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of C. dichotoma. The cp genome of C. dichotoma is 154,110 bp long with the GC content of 38.09% and consists of four subregions: a large single-copy (LSC) region of 84,915 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of 17,783 bp and a pair of inverted repeats (IRs) of 25,706 bp each. The cp genome of C. dichotoma encodes a total of 114 unique genes, comprising 80 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNA genes, and four rRNA genes. Phylogenetic trees based on the coding sequences strongly support the position of C. dichotoma within the genus Callicarpa, confirming the previously reported monophyly of the genus.

Case of misdiagnosed melioidosis from Hue city, Vietnam.

Project description:Melioidosis is an emerging infection, a potentially fatal tropical disease caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei in humans and animals, endemic in Southeast Asia and northern Australia. Diagnosis remains problematic due to its similarity to many other infections. The lack of clinical awareness and correct microbiological diagnosis contributes to the misidentification of melioidosis. We present a melioidosis case, which was misdiagnosed with pneumonia and septicemia due to Aeromonas salmonicida, leading to ineffective prolonged-course antibiotic treatment for the patient.

Records of Wenchengia (Lamiaceae) from Vietnam.

Project description:BackgroundThe monotypic genus Wenchengia (Lamiaceae) has been thought to be endemic to Hainan, China. This paper reports on historic records of Wenchengia alternifolia collected from Vietnam. The recent recuration and modernisation of the Paris herbarium greatly facilitated this discovery.New informationDuring preparatory work supporting the account for the Lamiaceae of the Flora of Thailand, three specimens of Wenchengia from central Vietnam were found in the Herbarium of the Musuem National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris (P), and subsequently two duplicates were found in the Herbarium at Kew (K, abbreviations following Thiers 2016). The specimens were collected in and before 1927 and it is not known if the species is still extant in Vietnam. Searches for extant populations should focus in the Ba Na Hills or Bach Ma National Park, central Vietnam.

Lipid composition and molecular species of phospholipid in oyster Crassostrea lugubris (Sowerby, 1871) from Lang Co Beach, Hue Province, Vietnam.

Project description:Oysters are widely distributed worldwide, but are mainly concentrated in tropics and subtropics. Total lipid (TL), fatty acid (FA) composition of TL and polar lipid (PoL) fractions, phospholipid (PL) class, and molecular species composition in soft tissues of Crassostrea lugubris were investigated for the first time from Vietnam. Phosphatidylglycolic acid (PGA) is the new phospholipid class first identified in marine species in general and Crassostrea lugubris in particular. Main eight classes of PL were determined in PoL fraction: diphosphatidylglycerol (DPG), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylinositol (PI), phosphatidylserine (PS), ceramide aminoethylphosphonate (CAEP), CAEP with hydroxylated FAs (CAEP-OH), and lysophosphatidylcholine. PE and PC accounted for approximately 63% of total known PL. Polyunsaturated FAs accounted for more than 30% of TL. Ninety molecular species of glycerophospholipids, including PGA, PE, PC, PS, PI, DPG, and PG, and sphingophosphonolipids (CAEP) were identified in PoL. Alkenyl-acyl forms of glycerophospholipids were predominated in the molecular species of PGA, PE, and PS. PGA 38:1 (p18:0/20:1), PE 40:6 (p18:0/22:6 and p18:1/22:5), PC 30:0 (14:0/16:0), PS 38:1 (p18:0/20:1), PI 40:5 (20:1/20:4), PG 32:0 (16:0/16:0), DPG 88:24 (22:6/22:6/22:6/22:6), and CAEP 34:2 (d18:2/16:0) were major molecular species.
