Selliguea kachinensis (Polypodiaceae), a new fern species of uncertain affinity from Northern Myanmar.

ABSTRACT: We describe Selliguea kachinensis as a new species from Northern Myanmar and discuss its generic placement in either Selliguea or Arthromeris. The conservation status is assessed as Data Deficient. In addition, we make the new combination Selliguea erythrocarpa (Mett. ex Kuhn) Hovenkamp, S. Linds., Fraser-Jenk.

Project description:The genus Thylacopteris is a small, phylogenetically isolated genus belonging to the fern family Polypodiaceae. This study describes a new species, Thylacopterisminuta, based on collections obtained during field surveys of Shan State, Myanmar. This new species is distinct from other species of Thylacopteris in its small size and presence of sclerenchyma strands in the rhizome. This species is also distinct from the only other species of Thylacopteris with molecular data available, T.papillosa, in a plastid rbcL phylogeny of Polypodiaceae. This new discovery of Thylacopteris from Myanmar suggests that this genus is still overlooked in Southeast Asia.

Lepisorusmedioximus (Polypodiales, Polypodiaceae), a new species from Shan State of Myanmar.

Project description:A new species of the species-rich fern genus Lepisorus (Polypodiales, Polypodiaceae) has been found to occur in Shan state, Myanmar. Lepisorusmedioximus is described based on morphological characters and phylogenetic evidence. Phylogenetic analyses showed that the specimens of L.medioximus formed a distinct clade nested in the Pseudovittaria clade. The morphological comparison demonstrated that the species is distinct from phylogenetically related species, namely L.elegans, L.contortus, and L.tosaensis, in the morphology of the rhizome scales, size, and shape of the lamina, position of sori, and paraphyses.

Two new species of Trivalvaria (Annonaceae) from northern Myanmar.

Project description:Trivalvaria rubra and Trivalvaria casseabriae, two new species of Annonaceae from Putao, Kachin State, Myanmar, are here described and illustrated. They are morphologically similar to T. costata and T. macrophylla. The major differences between them are outlined and discussed. A diagnostic key to the species of Trivalvaria is provided.

Coelogyne magnifica (Orchidaceae), a new species from northern Myanmar.

Project description:Coelogyne magnifica (Orchidaceae), a new species from Putao, Kachin State, Myanmar, is described and illustrated. It belongs to Coelogyne section Ocellatae Pfitzer & Kraenzl. and it is morphologically similar to Coelogyne corymbosa and C. taronensis, but can be distinguished from these species by its larger flowers, lanceolate sepals and petals, a narrowly ovate lip, which has two bright yellow patches surrounded by shiny brownish red and two fimbriate or erose-lacerate lateral keels on the lip. The major differences between these species are outlined and discussed.

Adetogramma (Polypodiaceae), a new monotypic fern genus segregated from Polypodium.

Project description:Polypodiaceae is one of the most diverse and abundant families of ferns in tropical and subtropical forests. Despite multiple studies investigating its phylogeny and taxonomy, several generic boundaries within the family still need clarification. One of the most problematic circumscriptions is that of Polypodium L., and one species that still contributes to this uncertainty is Polypodium chrysolepis Hook. The main goal of this study was to use molecular and morphological data to clarify the relationships of P. chrysolepis inside the polygrammoid clade. Sequences from three plastid regions (cpDNA - rbcL, rps4 and rps4-trnS IGS) from fifty species belonging to thirty-two genera of Polypodiaceae were analyzed using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference. Polypodium chrysolepis constitutes an isolated lineage among the neotropical polygrammoid ferns, close to Serpocaulon and the grammitids, and is recognized here in a new genus. It can be distinguished by its entire leaves with free veins and peltate, pedicellate, lanceolate paraphyses. A new combination, Adetogramma chrysolepis, is proposed and a new taxonomic treatment is presented; its conservation status was assessed using IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Complete plastome of an endemic fern species from China: Neocheiropteris palmatopedata (Polypodiaceae).

Project description:Neocheiropteris palmatopedata (Baker) Christ is an endangered fern species endemic to southwest China. In this study, we sequenced the complete plastid genome of N. palmatopedata. The gene order and structure of the N. palmatopedata plastome are similar to those published plastomes in Polypodiales. The complete plastome is 153,344 bp in length, and the GC content is 42.1%. The plastome comprises 113 unique genes (83 protein-coding genes, 29 tRNA genes and four rRNA genes).

Project description:Hedychium putaoense Y.H. Tan & H.B. Ding, a new species of Zingiberaceae from Putao, Kachin state, Northern Myanmar, is described and illustrated. It is similar to H. densiflorum Wall. and H. longipedunculatum A.R.K. Sastry & D.M. Verma, but differs by its very small bract (4-6 × 2.5-3 mm vs. 18-19 × 5-5.5 mm and ca. 11 × 7 mm, respectively), semicircle and dark red bracteole, orange flower and broadly falcate to lanceolate lateral staminodes.

A new species of Amolops (Anura: Ranidae) from northern Myanmar.

Project description:A new species of the genus Amolops, Amolops putaoensis sp. nov., is described from northern Myanmar. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by the following characters: (1) dorsolateral fold distinct; (2) upper-lip stripe white; (3) male body size 37.6-40.2 mm; (4) ground color of dorsal surface brown, flank green, small warts on dorsum; (5) two internal subgular vocal sacs present; (6) HL slightly shorter than HW; (7) two palmar tubercles present, supernumerary tubercles and outer metatarsal tubercle absent; (8) tympanum smaller than half of eye diameter; (9) vomerine teeth present; (10) tibiotarsal articulation reaching beyond snout tip; (11) supratympanic fold indistinct; (12) pineal body present; (13) finger webbing absent, presence of circummarginal groove on tip of first finger; (14) nuptial pads present. The population from Myanmar represented a distinct maternal lineage within the Amolops monticola group and was recovered as a sister taxon to Amolops aniqiaoensis with strong support (100) based on concatenated data. Average uncorrected pairwise distances ( P-distances) between the specimens from Myanmar and other species in the genus ranged from 2.69% (vs. A. aniqiaoensis) to 12.24% (vs. A. indoburmanensis) for 16S rRNA, 6.14% (vs. A. aniqiaoensis) to 15.79% (vs. A. panhai) for COI, and 9.66% (vs. A. aniqiaoensis) to 19.52% (vs. A. afghanus) for ND2.

The genome has a length of 151,591 bp with 40.8% GC content, with in total 131 genes were annotated, including 88 protein genes, 35 tRNAs, and 8 rRNAs. This work provides basic information for its phylogeographical and conservation research.

The complete chloroplast genome of Platycerium wallichii (Polypodiaceae), an endangered and ornamental fern species.

Project description:The complete chloroplast genome of a staghorn fern species (Platycerium wallichii) was sequenced. The total genome was 158,286 bp in length, containing four regions: large single-copy (LSC) region (79,087 bp), small single-copy (SSC) region (21,397 bp), and two inverted repeat regions (IRs; 28,901 bp per each). In total 129 genes were annotated including 88 coding genes, 33 tRNAs, and 8 rRNAs. The overall GC content of the genome is 40.5%. Phylogenetic analysis supported the monophyly of both the subfamily Platycerioideae and the genus Platycerium. The genome data provides crucial information to support the future conservation and horticulture research.
