Oenanthe incrassans: An enigmatic species from Turkey and its comparison with Oenanthe pimpinelloides (Apiaceae).

ABSTRACT: Oenanthe incrassans (Apiaceae) was discovered in Istanbul, Turkey. It is related to Oenanthe pimpinelloides, but it clearly differs in terms of leaves, inflorescence (ray, bracts, and bracteoles) and fruit features. A taxonomic description, some photographs of the species, geographical distribution and habitat features are given. Additionally, fruit micromorphology, stem, ray and fruit anatomy, and pollen features are studied for the first time and compared to Oenanthe pimpinelloides.

Project description:A new subspecies Seseli gummiferum Pall. ex Sm. subsp. ilgazense A.Duran, Ö.Çetin & M.Öztürk, subsp. nov. (Apiaceae) is described from Kastamonu province, Turkey. It was collected from the open Pinus sylvestris L. and Abies nordmanniana (Steven) É.Spach. mixed forest in the northern Anatolian region. An endemic apparently confined to the Ilgaz Mountain National Park, the new taxon is closely related to Seseli gummiferum subsp. gummiferum. Diagnostic morphological characters for closely similar taxa are discussed, and a key to the subspecies of Seseli gummiferum is presented. ITS (Internal Transcribed Spacer) region of the nuclear ribozomal DNA of closely related Seseli L. taxa and Pimpinella is used to constract phylogenetic tree by using BioEdit and Seaview Programme.

Enigmatic Headstands in European Freshwater Fish Species.

Project description:This study discloses a remarkable and rarely documented behavior among two cyprinid species-the common bleak (Alburnus alburnus) and the common roach (Rutilus rutilus)-and one percid species, the European perch (Perca fluviatilis). The primary aim was to reevaluate this distinct behavior, termed "headstand", and explore its potential implications for fish behavior and ecology. We utilized video recording to observe and analyze this behavior. Fish were monitored in an enclosure with near-natural conditions. Instances of headstanding behavior-where fish assume a head-down posture at angles between 45° and 90°-were documented. The video analysis revealed the occurrence of headstanding behavior in all three species, lasting from a few seconds to over a minute. This behavior was observed both individually and in groups, sometimes involving multiple species simultaneously. Group headstands occurred more frequently in the year when water transparency was low. Interestingly, although this behavior was previously proposed as a cleaning signal, no cleaning activity was observed afterward. Our observations suggest that headstanding may serve additional functions beyond a cleaning context, potentially involving foraging, predator avoidance, or social communication. Observing this behavior under diverse conditions highlights its ecological and social relevance. Future work integrating behavioral, ecological, and physiological approaches could clarify the adaptive significance of headstanding employed by these species.

Cyclorhizapuana (Apiaceae), a new species from Sichuan, China.

Project description:A new species, Cyclorhizapuana J. Zhou & Z.W. Liu (Apiaceae) from Sichuan Province of China, is described and illustrated here. Morphological comparisons with congeneric species revealed that it is distinguished by its slender habit, sparse annular scars, 4-pinnatisect leaf blade with ultimate segments linear (2-4×0.5-1 mm), subequal rays, oblong fruits with slightly thickened ribs, obconic stylopodium and slightly concave seed face. A molecular analysis based on nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences indicated that C.puana is genetically distinct from the other two species of the genus. A distribution map, as well as an updated key, are provided for the species of Cyclorhiza.

Hanseniatrifoliolata, a new species (Apiaceae) from Shaanxi, China.

Project description:Hanseniatrifoliolata Q.P.Jiang & X.J.He (Apiaceae), is described as new from Shaanxi Province, northwest China. The mericarp features of H.trifoliolata resemble H.himalayensis and H.phaea and molecular phylogenetic analyses (combining ITS and plastid genomes data) suggest that H.trifoliolata is closely related to the group formed by H.oviformis and H.forbesii. The new species H.trifoliolata has unique 3-foliolate leaves and differ from other Hansenia species in its leaves, umbel numbers and size. A comprehensive description of H.trifoliolata is provided, including habitat environment and detailed morphological traits.

Oenanthe millefolia (Umbelliferae), a new species record for the Turkish and Greek Flora.

Project description:Oenanthe millefolia (Apiaceae), which is presented as a new recorded species for the Turkish flora, was discovered for the first time in K?rklareli province of Turkey. It is also reported as a new species for the Greek flora based on an unidentified specimen which was collected from the Thrace region of Greece. In this study, an expanded morphological description, the geographical distribution, the habitat properties and the ecological features of the species are exhibited with illustrative figures. Moreover, the micromorphological and anatomical characters of the fruits and the anatomical properties of the stem, petiole, leaves and the palynological features of Oenanthe millefolia are determined and described for the first time.

Medical herbs have been of a high importance for this purpose. The genus Dorema, of Apiaceae family (Umbelliferae) has a wide use in ethnobotany and traditional medicine around the world. It has been used as a treatment for CNS disease, convulsion, upper respiratory tract problems, gastrointestinal disorder and high blood sugar. Furthermore, phytochemical investigations have reported Dorema species to contain a wide range of constituents including terpenes, coumarins and phenolic compounds. The current review summarizes comprehensive information regarding botany, phytochemistry andpharmacological aspects of Dorema spp.
