The advent of mobile DNA sequencers has made it possible to generate DNA sequencing data outside of laboratories and genome centers. Here, we report our experience of using the MinION, a mobile sequencer, in a 13-week academic course for undergraduate and graduate students. Project description:A quasi non-equivalent, non-randomized factorial design, examined Chemistry students' attitudes towards chemistry and academic achievement in second year Bachelor of Education students taught with the flipped classroom strategy. In the study of 100 students, a pre-attitude test of 30-items questionnaire was apportioned to ascertained students' attitude towards chemistry. Pre-test was also apportioned to the control and experimental group. This was followed by teaching using the flipped classroom strategy for experimental group and the control group was taught using the traditional approach. Thereafter, students in the experimental group wrote a post attitude test. A post-test was administered to both experimental and control group. The result of the post-attitude showed a significantly higher mean when compared to the pre attitude score. The result of the analysis using sample t-test showed students having a positive attitude towards chemistry, when taught using flipped classroom. The study also sought to find out the academic achievement of students taught with and without the flipped classroom strategy. Findings from the investigation of academic achievement revealed that students' academic achievement was significantly higher than those in the conventional group. The implications of these findings are that the flipped classroom strategy could improve attitude of students towards chemistry, thereby enhancing their academic achievement. This is so as students can play the lesson videos again and again at the comfort of their homes for mastery of concept in their lesson. The result of this study is especially relevant to the learning and teaching of chemistry in secondary and tertiary institutions in developing nations, Nigeria inclusive. This is so as the teacher per student ratio is high such that the teacher cannot carry every student along in the class within the short period provided.

Project description:The flipped classroom (FC), reversing lecture and homework elements of a course, is popular in medical education. The FC uses technology-enhanced pre-class learning to transmit knowledge, incorporating in-class interaction to enhance higher cognitive learning. However, the FC model is expensive and research on its effectiveness remains inconclusive. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of the FC model over traditional lecture-based (LB) learning by meta-analysis. We systematically searched MEDLINE, PubMed, ERIC, CINAHL, EMBASE, reference lists and Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) conference books. Controlled trials comparing academic outcomes between the FC and LB approaches in higher education were considered eligible. The main findings were pooled using a random-effects model when appropriate. Forty-six studies (9026 participants) were included, comprising four randomised controlled trials (RCTs), 19 quasi-experimental studies and 23 cohort studies. Study populations were health science (n = 32) and non health science (n = 14) students. The risk of bias was high (36/37 articles). Meta-analyses revealed that the FC had significantly better outcomes than the LB method in examination scores (post-intervention and pre-post change) and course grades, but not in objective structured clinical examination scores. Subgroup analyses showed the advantage of the FC was not observed in RCTs, non-USA countries, nursing and other health science disciplines and earlier publication years (2013 and 2014). Cumulative analysis and meta-regression suggested a tendency for progressively better outcomes by year. Outcome assessments rarely focused on behaviour change. The FC method is associated with greater academic achievement than the LB approach for higher-level learning outcomes, which has become more obvious in recent years. However, results should be interpreted with caution because of the high methodological diversity, statistical heterogeneity and risk of bias in the studies used. Future studies should have high methodological rigour, a standardised FC format and utilise assessment tools evaluating higher cognitive learning and behaviour change to further examine differences between FC and LB learning.

Project description:This study investigated the effects of multimedia and dynamic classroom integrated instruction (DCII) on students' academic achievement in two biology topics, i.e., respiration and photosynthesis. A non-equivalent, quasi-experimental design with a mixed research approach was employed. A total of 94 secondary school students participated in the study. Data were collected using biology achievement tests, classroom observations, and focus group discussions. The data was analyzed using paired and independent sample t-tests, repeated measure analysis of variance, and thematic analysis. Using the Kuder Richardson -20 (KR-20) formula, the calculated reliability coefficient of the BAT was .78. The results revealed that in the pretest and posttests, there was a statistically significant difference in biology achievement within the experimental group (t 47 = -17.461, p = .000) and in the posttest between the comparison and the experimental group (t 92 = 5.39, p = .000). Multimedia and DCII is a crucial factor that significantly enhanced academic performance between pretest and posttest scores (time effect), regardless of learning style. Still, there is no significant score difference between the three learning style groups, irrespective of time, and does not interact with each other. In conclusion, multimedia and DCII address the needs of diversified classroom learners, create a more active learning environment, simplify complex content, make the classroom busy, buffer educational inequality between learners, and replace unpractical lab activities. Mainly for abstract content, implementing systematic multimedia-based pedagogy can enhance students' achievement.

Project description:ObjectivesClassroom-based learning such as academic half days (AHDs) are complementary to workplace learning in postgraduate medical education. This study examined three research questions: the purpose of AHDs, elements of an effective AHD, and factors that make AHD sustainable.MethodsWe conducted a case study of the AHD in a large Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program at the University of British Columbia. Residents were interviewed in 2013 (n = 11) and 2018 (n = 7) and the program administrator was interviewed in 2018. The themes in each research question were identified by modified inductive analysis.ResultsResidents expressed that the purposes of AHD included: providing organization and an overview for their knowledge acquisition; preparation for their Royal College specialty exam; and to provide a venue for peer support and mentorship. Elements of an effective AHD include the repetition of key concepts; formative assessments such as quizzes, a suitable balance of faculty input and resident active participation, and protection from clinical duty during AHD. Regarding the sustainability of AHD, themes included: addressing barriers to faculty participation, providing administrative support for logistical needs, and providing feedback to faculty.ConclusionsThis work provides important insights into the purpose, effectiveness, and sustainability of AHDs for those who design and implement classroom learning for residents.

Project description:A student's ability to learn effectively in a classroom setting is subject to many factors. While some factors are difficult to regulate, this study explores two factors that a student, or instructor, has full control over, namely 1) seating position, and 2) computer usage. Both factors have been studied considerably with regard to their effects on student performance, and the results indicate that sitting further from the instructor, or using a computer in the classroom, are related to a decline in grade performance. However, it is unclear if the choice of where to sit and whether or not to use a computer in class are mediated by the same cognitive process. If they are the same, then we would expect to see an interaction between the factors, such that, for example, computer usage would most negatively impact the grades of students who sit near the back of a class. This study aims to answer this question by looking at the individual and combined effects of seating position and computer usage on classroom performance. We sampled 1364 students, collecting nearly 3000 total responses across 5 different introductory psychology courses with 4 different instructors on 3 separate occasions. In agreement with previous research, we found that sitting further from the instructor negatively impacted students' grades (0.75 percentage points/row), and using a computer in class negatively impacted grades (by 3.88 percentage points). Our novel finding is that these deleterious effects combined in an additive manner, such that using a computer had the same harmful effect on grade performance regardless of whether the student sat at the front or back of the classroom.

Project description:The rapid adoption rate and integration of mobile technology (tablet computing devices and smartphones) by physicians is reshaping the current clinical landscape. These devices have sparked an evolution in a variety of arenas, including educational media dissemination, remote patient data access and point of care applications. Quantifying usage patterns of clinical applications of mobile technology is of interest to understand how these technologies are shaping current clinical care. A digital survey examining mobile tablet and associated application usage was administered via email to all ACGME training programs. Data regarding respondent specialty, level of training, and habits of tablet usage were collected and analyzed. 40% of respondents used a tablet, of which the iPad was the most popular. Nearly half of the tablet owners reported using the tablet in clinical settings; the most commonly used application types were point of care and electronic medical record access. Increased level of training was associated with decreased support for mobile computing improving physician capabilities and patient interactions. There was strong and consistent desire for institutional support of mobile computing and integration of mobile computing technology into medical education. While many physicians are currently purchasing mobile devices, often without institutional support, successful integration of these devices into the clinical setting is still developing. Potential reasons behind the low adoption rate may include interference of technology in doctor-patient interactions or the lack of appropriate applications available for download. However, the results convincingly demonstrate that physicians recognize a potential utility in mobile computing, indicated by their desire for institutional support and integration of mobile technology into medical education. It is likely that the use of tablet computers in clinical practice will expand in the future. Thus, we believe medical institutions, providers, educators, and developers should collaborate in ways that enhance the efficacy, reliability, and safety of integrating these devices into daily medical practice.

Project description:BackgroundThe plastid acquisition by secondary endosymbiosis is a driving force for the algal evolution, and the comparative genomics was required to examine the genomic change of symbiont. Therefore, we established a pipeline of a de novo assembly of middle-sized genomes at a low cost and with high quality using long and short reads.ResultsWe sequenced symbiotic algae Chlorella variabilis using Oxfofrd Nanopore MinION as the long-read sequencer and Illumina HiSeq 4000 as the short-read sequencer and then assembled the genomes under various conditions. Subsequently, we evaluated these assemblies by the gene model quality and RNA-seq mapping rate. We found that long-read only assembly could not be suitable for the comparative genomics studies, but with short reads, we could obtain the acceptable assembly. On the basis of this result, we established the pipeline of de novo assembly for middle-sized algal genome using MinION.ConclusionsThe genomic change during the early stages of plastid acquisition can now be revealed by sequencing and comparing many algal genomes. Moreover, this pipeline offers a solution for the assembly of various middle-sized eukaryotic genomes with high-quality and ease.

Project description:ObjectivesDetermine the impact of classroom-based physically active lessons on time-on-task. Secondarily, determine the relationship of time-on-task with academic achievement controlling for key demographic variables.MethodsSeventeen elementary schools were cluster randomized to receive classroom physical activity (A+PAAC, N=9) or control (i.e., no physical activity, N=8) for a 3-year trial. Teachers were trained to deliver physically active lessons with moderate-to-vigorous intensity targeting 100 minutes per week. Outcome measures included academic achievement (Weschler Individual Achievement Test-III), administered at baseline and repeated each spring for 3 years, time spent in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and time spent on task (TOT) pre- and post-physical activity. Multilevel modeling was utilized to estimate the impacts of percent time spent in MVPA and percent TOT post-lesson on academic achievement and the change in these impacts over 3 years, accounting for dependency among observations and covariates including age, gender, race, free or reduced lunch, BMI, and fitness.ResultsA greater percentage of time performing MVPA were each significantly associated with higher math scores (p=.034) and spelling scores (p<.001), but not reading scores. Academic achievement was not associated with TOT.ConclusionFindings suggest that a greater percentage of time spent participating in MVPA results in higher math scores and spelling scores, but not reading scores, independent of TOT. Future studies should continue to evaluate the influence of physically active classroom lessons on time spent on task and its impact on academic achievement. Furthermore, strategies are needed to maximize impact and to determine the sustainability of physical activity's effect on classroom behavior and academic achievement.

Project description:IntroductionCareer advising for medical students can be challenging for both the student and the adviser. Our objective was to design, implement, and evaluate a "flipped classroom" style advising session.MethodsWe performed a single-center cross-sectional study at an academic medical center, where a novel flipped classroom style student advising model was implemented and evaluated. In this model, students were provided a document to review and fill out prior to their one-on-one advising session.ResultsNinety-four percent (95% CI, 88%-100%) of the medical students surveyed felt that the advising session was more effective as a result of the outline provided and completed before the session and that the pre-advising document helped them gain a better understanding of the content to be discussed at the session.ConclusionUtilization of the flipped classroom style advising document was an engaging advising technique that was well received by students at our institution.

Project description:ObjectiveCentral executive training (CET) is a "Level 2" evidence-based treatment for improving ADHD-related executive dysfunction and behavioral symptoms, but the extent to which these gains extend to the disorder's well-documented academic difficulties is unknown.MethodAcross two clinical trials, 108 children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) 8-13 years old (M = 10.29, SD = 1.50; 32 girls; 75% White/Non-Hispanic) were treated with CET (n = 52), inhibitory control training (ICT; n = 29), or gold-standard behavioral parent training (BPT; n = 27).ResultsCET was superior to BPT and ICT (d = 0.62-0.88) for improving masked teacher perceptions of academic success, impulse control, and academic productivity at 1-2 months posttreatment. At 2-4-month follow-up, CET (d = 0.76) and ICT (d = 0.54) were superior to BPT for improving objectively-tested academic achievement overall (reading comprehension, math problem-solving, language comprehension), and CET was superior to ICT (d = 0.56) for improving math problem-solving. The significant benefits of CET on academic success, academic productivity, reading comprehension, and math problem-solving replicated across both trials and were clinically significant as evidenced by low number needed to treat estimates (Needed to Treat; NNT = 3-7) and significantly higher proportions of individual cases demonstrating reliable improvements in academic success/productivity (33%-36% vs. 0%-18%) and achievement (38%-72% vs. 18%-54%) across outcomes (all p ≤ .01).ConclusionsResults across the two trials provide strong support for the efficacy of CET for ADHD, and are consistent with model-driven hypotheses that academic difficulties in ADHD are due, in part, to these children's underdeveloped executive functioning abilities.
