Nanomanufacturing: A Perspective.

ABSTRACT: Nanomanufacturing, the commercially scalable and economically sustainable mass production of nanoscale materials and devices, represents the tangible outcome of the nanotechnology revolution. In contrast to those used in nanofabrication for research purposes, nanomanufacturing processes must satisfy the additional constraints of cost, throughput, and time to market. Taking silicon integrated circuit manufacturing as a baseline, we consider the factors involved in matching processes with products, examining the characteristics and potential of top-down and bottom-up processes, and their combination. We also discuss how a careful assessment of the way in which function can be made to follow form can enable high-volume manufacturing of nanoscale structures with the desired useful, and exciting, properties.

Nondestructive Approach for Additive Nanomanufacturing of Metallic Nanostructures in the Air.

Project description:In this article, a mechanism for quick release and transfer of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) from a soft substrate to another substrate under laser illumination is investigated. The heating of GNPs on a soft substrate with a continuous-wave laser causes a rapid thermal expansion of the substrate, which can be used to selectively release and place GNPs onto another surface. In-plane and out-of-plane nanostructures are successfully fabricated using this method. This rapid release-and-place process can be used for additive nonmanufacturing of metallic nanostructures under ambient conditions, which paves a way for affordable nanomanufacturing and enables a wide variety of applications in nanophotonics, ultrasensitive sensing, and nonlinear plasmonics.

Noncontact conductivity and dielectric measurement for high throughput roll-to-roll nanomanufacturing.

Project description:Advances in roll-to-roll processing of graphene and carbon nanotubes have at last led to the continuous production of high-quality coatings and filaments, ushering in a wave of applications for flexible and wearable electronics, woven fabrics, and wires. These applications often require specific electrical properties, and hence precise control over material micro- and nanostructure. While such control can be achieved, in principle, by closed-loop processing methods, there are relatively few noncontact and nondestructive options for quantifying the electrical properties of materials on a moving web at the speed required in modern nanomanufacturing. Here, we demonstrate a noncontact microwave method for measuring the dielectric constant and conductivity (or geometry for samples of known dielectric properties) of materials in a millisecond. Such measurement times are compatible with current and future industrial needs, enabling real-time materials characterization and in-line control of processing variables without disrupting production.

New nanomanufacturing strategy through bioinspired design, for promising treatment of Parkinson's disease.

Project description:This study attempts to develop a new nanomanufacturing strategy for Parkinson's disease using natural biodegradable components (chitosan, albumin, and dopamine) that can penetrate the blood-brain barrier (BBB) due to biocompatibility, biodegradability, targeted delivery, and controlled drug release. It was prepared, thoroughly optimized and characterized using various biophysical and chemical techniques. Results showed that the nanomanufactured system (molar ratio of 1:0.25:0.5 and particle size range: 38-190 nm) exhibited a zeta potential of + 73 mV facilitating efficient pentration of BBB through an adsorption mechanism with the cell membrane's negative charges. The particle size of the nanomanufactured system and spherical nanoparticle clusters indicated its ability to enhance dopamine delivery to brain tissues. Encapsulation efficiency was measured at 74.31 ± 0.29 with dopamine release faster at pH 5.4 and sustained release over 96 h in both acidic media (pH 5.4) or physiological conditions (pH 7.4). Cytotoxicity studies showed a degradation rate in normal cells that never exceeded 20% and the nanomanufactured system exhibited low half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values, indicating low cytotoxicity. Albumin plays a vital and distinct role in stimulating normal cells and enhancing the transport system to the target via an adsorptive-mediated endocytosis pathway. The electron microscopy images depict distrution of heterogeneous nanoparticles, with sizes ranged from 36.86 nm to 190.3 nm and a mean average diameter of 108.1 nm. The average particle size of the nanosystem was 49.4 ± 9.9 nm, with a Polydispersity Index (PI) of 0.494. The loading efficiency was 14.78 ± 0.37% and the encapsulation efficiency was 74.31 ± 0.29%. This nanomanufactured system holds significant promise for improving Parkinson's disease treatment by enabling targeted and efficient drug delivery to the brain.

Augmenting T-cell responses to tumors by <i>in situ</i> nanomanufacturing.

Project description:Recent innovations in immunoregulatory treatments have demonstrated both the impressive potential and vital role of T cells in fighting cancer. These treatments come at a cost, with systemic side effects including life-threatening autoimmunity and immune dysregulation the norm. Here, we developed an approach to locally synthesize immune therapies and in this way, avoid systemic toxicity. Rather than just encapsulating cytokines, we endowed our nanoparticles with transcriptional and translational machinery to make cytokines locally, in situ, and on demand (activated by light). We demonstrated the capabilities of these particles in vitro and in vivo, in a mouse model of melanoma, and showed that tumor-infiltrating T cells were more highly activated in the context of these "microfactory" particles that make the synthetic cytokine.

Stencil Lithography for Scalable Micro- and Nanomanufacturing.

Project description:In this paper, we review the current development of stencil lithography for scalable micro- and nanomanufacturing as a resistless and reusable patterning technique. We first introduce the motivation and advantages of stencil lithography for large-area micro- and nanopatterning. Then we review the progress of using rigid membranes such as SiNx and Si as stencil masks as well as stacking layers. We also review the current use of flexible membranes including a compliant SiNx membrane with springs, polyimide film, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer, and photoresist-based membranes as stencil lithography masks to address problems such as blurring and non-planar surface patterning. Moreover, we discuss the dynamic stencil lithography technique, which significantly improves the patterning throughput and speed by moving the stencil over the target substrate during deposition. Lastly, we discuss the future advancement of stencil lithography for a resistless, reusable, scalable, and programmable nanolithography method.

Nanomanufacturing of Tobacco Mosaic Virus-Based Spherical Biomaterials Using a Continuous Flow Method.

Project description:Nanomanufacturing of nanoparticles is critical for potential translation and commercialization. Continuous flow devices can alleviate this need through unceasing production of nanoparticles. Here we demonstrate the scaled-up production of spherical nanoparticles functionalized with biomedical cargos from the rod-shaped plant virus tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) using a mesofluidic, continued flow method. Production yields were increased 30-fold comparing the mesofluidic device versus batch methods. Finally, we produced MRI contrast agents of select sizes, with per particle relaxivity reaching 979,218 mM-1 s-1 at 60 MHz. These TMV-based spherical nanoparticle MRI contrast agents are in the top echelon of relaxivity per nanoparticle.

Nanomanufacturing of silicon surface with a single atomic layer precision via mechanochemical reactions.

Project description:Topographic nanomanufacturing with a depth precision down to atomic dimension is of importance for advancement of nanoelectronics with new functionalities. Here we demonstrate a mask-less and chemical-free nanolithography process for regio-specific removal of atomic layers on a single crystalline silicon surface via shear-induced mechanochemical reactions. Since chemical reactions involve only the topmost atomic layer exposed at the interface, the removal of a single atomic layer is possible and the crystalline lattice beneath the processed area remains intact without subsurface structural damages. Molecular dynamics simulations depict the atom-by-atom removal process, where the first atomic layer is removed preferentially through the formation and dissociation of interfacial bridge bonds. Based on the parametric thresholds needed for single atomic layer removal, the critical energy barrier for water-assisted mechanochemical dissociation of Si-Si bonds was determined. The mechanochemical nanolithography method demonstrated here could be extended to nanofabrication of other crystalline materials.

Burden of Disease (BoD) Assessment to Estimate Risk Factors Impact in a Real Nanomanufacturing Scenario.

Project description:An industrial nanocoating process air emissions impact on public health was quantified by using the burden of disease (BoD) concept. The health loss was calculated in Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), which is an absolute metric that enables comparisons of the health impacts of different causes. Here, the health loss was compared with generally accepted risk levels for air pollution. Exposure response functions were not available for Ag nanoform. The health loss for TiO2 nanoform emissions were 0.0006 DALYs per 100,000 persons per year. Moreover, the exposure risk characterization was performed by comparing the ground level air concentrations with framework values. The exposure levels were ca. 3 and 18 times lower than the derived limit values of 0.1 μg-TiO2/m3 and 0.01 μg-Ag/m3 for the general population. The accumulations of TiO2 and Ag nanoforms on the soil top layer were estimated to be up to 85 μg-TiO2/kg and 1.4 μg-Ag/kg which was considered low as compared to measured elemental TiO2 and Ag concentrations. This assessment reveals that the spray coating process air emissions are adequately controlled. This study demonstrated how the BoD concept can be applied to quantify health impacts of nanoform outdoor air emissions from an industrial site.

Glassy Carbon: A Promising Material for Micro- and Nanomanufacturing.

Project description:When certain polymers are heat-treated beyond their degradation temperature in the absence of oxygen, they pass through a semi-solid phase, followed by the loss of heteroatoms and the formation of a solid carbon material composed of a three-dimensional graphenic network, known as glassy (or glass-like) carbon. The thermochemical decomposition of polymers, or generally of any organic material, is defined as pyrolysis. Glassy carbon is used in various large-scale industrial applications and has proven its versatility in miniaturized devices. In this article, micro and nano-scale glassy carbon devices manufactured by (i) pyrolysis of specialized pre-patterned polymers and (ii) direct machining or etching of glassy carbon, with their respective applications, are reviewed. The prospects of the use of glassy carbon in the next-generation devices based on the material's history and development, distinct features compared to other elemental carbon forms, and some large-scale processes that paved the way to the state-of-the-art, are evaluated. Selected support techniques such as the methods used for surface modification, and major characterization tools are briefly discussed. Barring historical aspects, this review mainly covers the advances in glassy carbon device research from the last five years (2013?2018). The goal is to provide a common platform to carbon material scientists, micro/nanomanufacturing experts, and microsystem engineers to stimulate glassy carbon device research.
