Ubiquity of Exciton Localization in Cryogenic Carbon Nanotubes.

ABSTRACT: We present photoluminescence studies of individual semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes at room and cryogenic temperatures. From the analysis of spatial and spectral features of nanotube photoluminescence, we identify characteristic signatures of unintentional exciton localization. Moreover, we quantify the energy scale of exciton localization potentials as ranging from a few to a few tens of millielectronvolts and stemming from both environmental disorder and shallow covalent side-wall defects. Our results establish disorder-induced crossover from the diffusive to the localized regime of nanotube excitons at cryogenic temperatures as a ubiquitous phenomenon in micelle-encapsulated and as-grown carbon nanotubes.

Terahertz Excitonics in Carbon Nanotubes: Exciton Autoionization and Multiplication.

Project description:Excitons play major roles in optical processes in modern semiconductors, such as single-wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs), transition metal dichalcogenides, and 2D perovskite quantum wells. They possess extremely large binding energies (>100 meV), dominating absorption and emission spectra even at high temperatures. The large binding energies imply that they are stable, that is, hard to ionize, rendering them seemingly unsuited for optoelectronic devices that require mobile charge carriers, especially terahertz emitters and solar cells. Here, we have conducted terahertz emission and photocurrent studies on films of aligned single-chirality semiconducting CNTs and find that excitons autoionize, i.e., spontaneously dissociate into electrons and holes. This process naturally occurs ultrafast (<1 ps) while conserving energy and momentum. The created carriers can then be accelerated to emit a burst of terahertz radiation when a dc bias is applied, with promising efficiency in comparison to standard GaAs-based emitters. Furthermore, at high bias, the accelerated carriers acquire high enough kinetic energy to create secondary excitons through impact exciton generation, again in a fully energy and momentum conserving fashion. This exciton multiplication process leads to a nonlinear photocurrent increase as a function of bias. Our theoretical simulations based on nonequilibrium Boltzmann transport equations, taking into account all possible scattering pathways and a realistic band structure, reproduce all of our experimental data semiquantitatively. These results not only elucidate the momentum-dependent ultrafast dynamics of excitons and carriers in CNTs but also suggest promising routes toward terahertz excitonics despite the orders-of-magnitude mismatch between the exciton binding energies and the terahertz photon energies.

Intrinsically ultrastrong plasmon-exciton interactions in crystallized films of carbon nanotubes.

Project description:In cavity quantum electrodynamics, optical emitters that are strongly coupled to cavities give rise to polaritons with characteristics of both the emitters and the cavity excitations. We show that carbon nanotubes can be crystallized into chip-scale, two-dimensionally ordered films and that this material enables intrinsically ultrastrong emitter-cavity interactions: Rather than interacting with external cavities, nanotube excitons couple to the near-infrared plasmon resonances of the nanotubes themselves. Our polycrystalline nanotube films have a hexagonal crystal structure, ∼25-nm domains, and a 1.74-nm lattice constant. With this extremely high nanotube density and nearly ideal plasmon-exciton spatial overlap, plasmon-exciton coupling strengths reach 0.5 eV, which is 75% of the bare exciton energy and a near record for room-temperature ultrastrong coupling. Crystallized nanotube films represent a milestone in nanomaterials assembly and provide a compelling foundation for high-ampacity conductors, low-power optical switches, and tunable optical antennas.

Helical polycarbodiimide cloaking of carbon nanotubes enables inter-nanotube exciton energy transfer modulation.

Project description:The use of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) as near-infrared optical probes and sensors require the ability to simultaneously modulate nanotube fluorescence and functionally derivatize the nanotube surface using noncovalent methods. We synthesized a small library of polycarbodiimides to noncovalently encapsulate SWCNTs with a diverse set of functional coatings, enabling their suspension in aqueous solution. These polymers, known to adopt helical conformations, exhibited ordered surface coverage on the nanotubes and allowed systematic modulation of nanotube optical properties, producing up to 12-fold differences in photoluminescence efficiency. Polymer cloaking of the fluorescent nanotubes facilitated the first instance of controllable and reversible internanotube exciton energy transfer, allowing kinetic measurements of dynamic self-assembly and disassembly.

Population of Exciton-Polaritons <i>via</i> Luminescent sp<sup>3</sup> Defects in Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes.

Project description:Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are an interesting material for strong-light matter coupling due to their stable excitons, narrow emission in the near-infrared region, and high charge carrier mobilities. Furthermore, they have emerged as quantum light sources as a result of the controlled introduction of luminescent quantum defects (sp3 defects) with red-shifted transitions that enable single-photon emission. The complex photophysics of SWCNTs and the overall goal of polariton condensation pose the question of how exciton-polaritons are populated and how the process might be optimized. The contributions of possible relaxation processes, i.e., scattering with acoustic phonons, vibrationally assisted scattering, and radiative pumping, are investigated using angle-resolved reflectivity and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements on microcavities with a wide range of detunings. We show that the predominant population mechanism for SWCNT exciton-polaritons in planar microcavities is radiative pumping. Consequently, the limitation of polariton population due to the low photoluminescence quantum yield of nanotubes can be overcome by luminescent sp3 defects. Without changing the polariton branch structure, radiative pumping through these emissive defects leads to an up to 10-fold increase of the polariton population for detunings with a large photon fraction. Thus, the controlled and tunable functionalization of SWCNTs with sp3 defects presents a viable route toward bright and efficient polariton devices.

Project description:Cryo-electron tomography (CET) produces three-dimensional images of cells in a near-native state at macromolecular resolution, but identifying structures of interest can be challenging. Here we describe a correlated cryo-PALM (photoactivated localization microscopy)-CET method for localizing objects within cryo-tomograms to beyond the diffraction limit of the light microscope. Using cryo-PALM-CET, we identified multiple and new conformations of the dynamic type VI secretion system in the crowded interior of Myxococcus xanthus.

New insights of transmembranal mechanism and subcellular localization of noncovalently modified single-walled carbon nanotubes.

Project description:Translocation and localization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in normal and cancerous cells have significant biomedical implications. In this study, SWNTs functionalized with different biomolecules in cells were observed with confocal laser scanning microscopy. Functionalized with PL-PEG, SWNTs were found to localize exclusively in mitochondria of both tumor and normal cells due to mitochondrial transmembrane potential, but they were found mainly in lysosomes of macrophages due to phagocytosis. However, when conjugated with different molecules, the subcellular localization of the surface-modified SWNT-PL-PEG depended on how SWNTs enter the cells: inside mitochondria if crossing cell membrane or inside lysosomes if being endocytosized. We also show that mitochondrial SWNT-PL-PEG, when irradiated with a near-infrared light, can induce cell apoptosis due to mitochondrial damages. These findings provide a better mechanistic understanding of cellular localization of SWNTs, which could lead to advanced biomedical applications such as the design of molecular transporters and development of SWNT-assisted cancer therapies.

Exciton localization in solution-processed organolead trihalide perovskites.

Project description:Organolead trihalide perovskites have attracted great attention due to the stunning advances in both photovoltaic and light-emitting devices. However, the photophysical properties, especially the recombination dynamics of photogenerated carriers, of this class of materials are controversial. Here we report that under an excitation level close to the working regime of solar cells, the recombination of photogenerated carriers in solution-processed methylammonium-lead-halide films is dominated by excitons weakly localized in band tail states. This scenario is evidenced by experiments of spectral-dependent luminescence decay, excitation density-dependent luminescence and frequency-dependent terahertz photoconductivity. The exciton localization effect is found to be general for several solution-processed hybrid perovskite films prepared by different methods. Our results provide insights into the charge transport and recombination mechanism in perovskite films and help to unravel their potential for high-performance optoelectronic devices.

A carbon-carbon hybrid - immobilizing carbon nanodots onto carbon nanotubes.

Project description:The thrust of this work is to integrate small and uniformly sized carbon nanodots (CNDs) with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) of different diameters as electron donors and electron acceptors, respectively, and to test their synergetic interactions in terms of optoelectronic devices. CNDs (denoted pCNDs, where p indicates pressure) were prepared by pressure-controlled microwave decomposition of citric acid and urea. pCNDs were immobilized on single-walled carbon nanotubes by wrapping the latter with poly(4-vinylbenzyl trimethylamine) (PVBTA), which features positively charged ammonium groups in the backbone. Negatively charged surface groups on the CNDs lead to attractive electrostatic interactions. Ground state interactions between the CNDs and SWCNTs were confirmed by a full-fledged photophysical investigation based on steady-state and time-resolved techniques. As a complement, charge injection into the SWCNTs upon photoexcitation was investigated by ultra-short time-resolved spectroscopy.

Thermodynamics on soluble carbon nanotubes: how do DNA molecules replace surfactants on carbon nanotubes?

Project description:Here we represent thermodynamics on soluble carbon nanotubes that enables deep understanding the interactions between single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and molecules. We selected sodium cholate and single-stranded cytosine oligo-DNAs (dCn (n = 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 15, and 20)), both of which are typical SWNT solubilizers, and successfully determined thermodynamic properties (?G, ?H and ?S values) for the exchange reactions of sodium cholate on four different chiralities of SWNTs ((n,m) = (6,5), (7,5), (10,2), and (8,6)) for the DNAs. Typical results contain i) the dC5 exhibited an exothermic exchange, whereas the dC6, 8, 10, 15, and 20 materials exhibited endothermic exchanges, and ii) the energetics of the dC4 and dC7 exchanges depended on the associated chiral indices and could be endothermic or exothermic. The presented method is general and is applicable to any molecule that interacts with nanotubes. The study opens a way for science of carbon nanotube thermodynamics.

How Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes are Transformed into Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes during Heat Treatment.

Project description:High-pressure carbon monoxide (HiPCO) single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were heat treated at high temperatures from 1700 to 3000 °C. During the heating below 2500 °C, the diameters of the SWCNTs gradually increase from ∼1.0 to >1.5 nm, and at the temperatures higher than 2500 °C, double-, triple-, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) appear as a consequence of the coalescence of SWCNT bundles. It is surprising that most MWCNTs have odd number of walls, such as 3 or 5. The even-odd number effect agrees well with the mechanism of SWCNT bundle coalescence proposed by López M. J. [Phys. Rev. Lett.2002, 89, 255501], in which an SWCNT that templated the layer by layer coalescence of surrounding SWCNTs is responsible for the enrichment of MWCNTs with odd number of walls. This study confirms the mechanism of SWCNT bundle coalescence, discovers an interesting odd-even number of walls effect in the consequent MWCNTs, and suggests that it is possible to obtain structure-controllable MWCNTs via SWCNT bundle coalescence.
