Unravelling the community structure of the climate system by using lags and symbolic time-series analysis.

ABSTRACT: Many natural systems can be represented by complex networks of dynamical units with modular structure in the form of communities of densely interconnected nodes. Unraveling this community structure from observed data requires the development of appropriate tools, particularly when the nodes are embedded in a regular space grid and the datasets are short and noisy. Here we propose two methods to identify communities, and validate them with the analysis of climate datasets recorded at a regular grid of geographical locations covering the Earth surface. By identifying mutual lags among time-series recorded at different grid points, and by applying symbolic time-series analysis, we are able to extract meaningful regional communities, which can be interpreted in terms of large-scale climate phenomena. The methods proposed here are valuable tools for the study of other systems represented by networks of dynamical units, allowing the identification of communities, through time-series analysis of the observed output signals.

Project description:ObjectiveAssessing an infant's brain development remains a challenge for neuroscientists and pediatricians despite great technological advances. As a non-invasive neuroimaging tool, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has great advantages in monitoring an infant's brain activity. To explore the dynamic features of hemodynamic changes in infants, in-pattern exponent (IPE), anti-pattern exponent (APE), as well as permutation cross-mutual information (PCMI) based on symbolic dynamics are proposed to measure the phase differences and coupling strength in oxyhemoglobin (HbO) and deoxyhemoglobin (Hb) signals from fNIRS.ApproachFirst, simulated sinusoidal oscillation signals and four coupled nonlinear systems were employed for performance assessments. Hilbert transform based measurements of hemoglobin phase oxygenation and deoxygenation (hPod) and phase-locking index of hPod (hPodL) were calculated for comparison. Then, the IPE, APE and PCMI indices from resting state fNIRS data of preterm, term infants and adults were calculated to estimate the phase difference and coupling of HbO and Hb. All indices' performance was assessed by the degree of monotonicity (DoM). The box plots and coefficients of variation (CV) were employed to assess the measurements and robustness in the results.Main resultsIn the simulation analysis, IPE and APE can distinguish the phase difference of two sinusoidal oscillation signals. Both hPodL and PCMI can track the strength of two coupled nonlinear systems. Compared to hPodL, the PCMI had higher DoM indices in measuring the coupling of two nonlinear systems. In the fNIRS data analysis, similar to hPod, the IPE and APE can distinguish preterm, term infants, and adults in 0.01-0.05 Hz, 0.05-0.1 Hz, and 0.01-0.1 Hz frequency bands, respectively. PCMI more effectively distinguished the term and preterm infants than hPodL in the 0.05-0.1 Hz frequency band. As symbolic time series measures, the IPE and APE were able to detect the brain developmental changes in subjects of different ages. PCMI can assess the resting-state HbO and Hb coupling changes across different developmental ages, which may reflect the metabolic and neurovascular development.SignificanceThe symbolic-based methodologies are promising measures for fNIRS in estimating the brain development, especially in assessing newborns' brain developmental status.

Project description:Increasing awareness of the issue of deforestation and degradation in the tropics has resulted in efforts to monitor forest resources in tropical countries. Advances in satellite-based remote sensing and ground-based technologies have allowed for monitoring of forests with high spatial, temporal and thematic detail. Despite these advances, there is a need to engage communities in monitoring activities and include these stakeholders in national forest monitoring systems. In this study, we analyzed activity data (deforestation and forest degradation) collected by local forest experts over a 3-year period in an Afro-montane forest area in southwestern Ethiopia and corresponding Landsat Time Series (LTS). Local expert data included forest change attributes, geo-location and photo evidence recorded using mobile phones with integrated GPS and photo capabilities. We also assembled LTS using all available data from all spectral bands and a suite of additional indices and temporal metrics based on time series trajectory analysis. We predicted deforestation, degradation or stable forests using random forest models trained with data from local experts and LTS spectral-temporal metrics as model covariates. Resulting models predicted deforestation and degradation with an out of bag (OOB) error estimate of 29% overall, and 26% and 31% for the deforestation and degradation classes, respectively. By dividing the local expert data into training and operational phases corresponding to local monitoring activities, we found that forest change models improved as more local expert data were used. Finally, we produced maps of deforestation and degradation using the most important spectral bands. The results in this study represent some of the first to combine local expert based forest change data and dense LTS, demonstrating the complementary value of both continuous data streams. Our results underpin the utility of both datasets and provide a useful foundation for integrated forest monitoring systems relying on data streams from diverse sources.
