Optically pumped subwavelength-scale metallodielectric nanopatch resonators.

ABSTRACT: We discuss subwavelength-scale semiconductor metal-optic resonators placed on the metal substrate with various top metal plate sizes. Albeit with large optical losses, addition of metal layers converts a leaky semiconductor nano-block into a highly-confined optical cavity. Optically pumped lasing action is observed with the extended top metal layer that can significantly suppress the radiation losses. Careful investigation of self-heating effects during the optical carrier injection process shows the importance of temperature-dependent material properties in the laser rate equation model and the overall laser performances.

Optically pumped magnetoencephalography in epilepsy.

Project description:We demonstrate the first use of Optically Pumped Magnetoencephalography (OP-MEG) in an epilepsy patient with unrestricted head movement. Current clinical MEG uses a traditional SQUID system, where sensors are cryogenically cooled and housed in a helmet in which the patient's head is fixed. Here, we use a different type of sensor (OPM), which operates at room temperature and can be placed directly on the patient's scalp, permitting free head movement. We performed OP-MEG recording in a patient with refractory focal epilepsy. OP-MEG-identified analogous interictal activity to scalp EEG, and source localized this activity to an appropriate brain region.

Optically pumped Milliwatt Whispering-Gallery microcavity laser.

Project description:Whispering-gallery-mode microcavity lasers possess remarkable characteristics such as high Q factors and compact geometries, making them an essential element in the evolution of microlasers. However, solid-state whispering-gallery-mode lasers have previously suffered from low output power and limited optical conversion efficiency, hindering their applications. Here, we present the achievement of milliwatt laser emissions at a wavelength of 1.06 µm from a solid-state whispering-gallery-mode laser. To accomplish this, we construct a whispering-gallery-mode microcavity (with a diameter of 30 µm) using a crystalline Nd: YAG thin film obtained through carbon-implantation enhanced etching of a Nd: YAG crystal. This microcavity laser demonstrates a maximum output power of 1.12 mW and an optical conversion efficiency of 12.4%. Moreover, our unique eccentric microcavity design enables efficient coupling of free-space pump light, facilitating integration with a waveguide. This integration allowed for single-wavelength laser emission from the waveguide, achieving an output power of 0.5 mW and an optical conversion efficiency of 6.18%. Our work opens up new possibilities for advancing solid-state whispering-gallery-mode lasers, providing a viable option for compact photonic sources.

Peripheral Nerve Magnetoneurography With Optically Pumped Magnetometers.

Project description:Electrodiagnosis is routinely integrated into clinical neurophysiology practice for peripheral nerve disease diagnoses, such as neuropathy, demyelinating disorders, nerve entrapment/impingement, plexopathy, or radiculopathy. Measured with conventional surface electrodes, the propagation of peripheral nerve action potentials along a nerve is the result of ionic current flow which, according to Ampere's Law, generates a small magnetic field that is also detected as an "action current" by magnetometers, such as superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) Magnetoencephalography (MEG) systems. Optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) are an emerging class of quantum magnetic sensors with a demonstrated sensitivity at the 1 fT/√Hz level, capable of cortical action current detection. But OPMs were ostensibly constrained to low bandwidth therefore precluding their use in peripheral nerve electrodiagnosis. With careful OPM bandwidth characterization, we hypothesized OPMs may also detect compound action current signatures consistent with both Sensory Nerve Action Potential (SNAP) and the Hoffmann Reflex (H-Reflex). In as much, our work confirms OPMs enabled with expanded bandwidth can detect the magnetic signature of both the SNAP and H-Reflex. Taken together, OPMs now show potential as an emerging electrodiagnostic tool.

Imaging the human hippocampus with optically-pumped magnetoencephalography.

Project description:Optically-pumped (OP) magnetometers allow magnetoencephalography (MEG) to be performed while a participant's head is unconstrained. To fully leverage this new technology, and in particular its capacity for mobility, the activity of deep brain structures which facilitate explorative behaviours such as navigation, must be detectable using OP-MEG. One such crucial brain region is the hippocampus. Here we had three healthy adult participants perform a hippocampal-dependent task - the imagination of novel scene imagery - while being scanned using OP-MEG. A conjunction analysis across these three participants revealed a significant change in theta power in the medial temporal lobe. The peak of this activated cluster was located in the anterior hippocampus. We repeated the experiment with the same participants in a conventional SQUID-MEG scanner and found similar engagement of the medial temporal lobe, also with a peak in the anterior hippocampus. These OP-MEG findings indicate exciting new opportunities for investigating the neural correlates of a range of crucial cognitive functions in naturalistic contexts including spatial navigation, episodic memory and social interactions.

Muscle Fatigue Revisited - Insights From Optically Pumped Magnetometers.

Project description:So far, surface electromyography (sEMG) has been the method of choice to detect and evaluate muscle fatigue. However, recent advancements in non-cryogenic quantum sensors, such as optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs), enable interesting possibilities to flexibly record biomagnetic signals. Yet, a magnetomyographic investigation of muscular fatigue is still missing. Here, we simultaneously used sEMG (4 surface electrode) and OPM-based magnetomyography (OPM-MMG, 4 sensors) to detect muscle fatigue during a 3 × 1-min isometric contractions of the left rectus femoris muscle in 7 healthy participants. Both signals exhibited the characteristic spectral compression distinctive for muscle fatigue. OPM-MMG and sEMG slope values, used to quantify the spectral compression of the signals, were positively correlated, displaying similarity between the techniques. Additionally, the analysis of the different components of the magnetic field vector enabled speculations regarding the propagation of the muscle action potentials (MAPs). Altogether these results show the feasibility of the magnetomyographic approach with OPMs and propose a potential alternative to sEMG for the study of muscle fatigue.

Adaptive multipole models of optically pumped magnetometer data.

Project description:Multipole expansions have been used extensively in the Magnetoencephalography (MEG) literature for mitigating environmental interference and modelling brain signal. However, their application to Optically Pumped Magnetometer (OPM) data is challenging due to the wide variety of existing OPM sensor and array designs. We therefore explore how such multipole models can be adapted to provide stable models of brain signal and interference across OPM systems. Firstly, we demonstrate how prolate spheroidal (rather than spherical) harmonics can provide a compact representation of brain signal when sampling on the scalp surface with as few as 100 channels. We then introduce a type of orthogonal projection incorporating this basis set. The Adaptive Multipole Models (AMM), which provides robust interference rejection across systems, even in the presence of spatially structured nonlinearity errors (shielding factor is the reciprocal of the maximum fractional nonlinearity error). Furthermore, this projection is always stable, as it is an orthogonal projection, and will only ever decrease the white noise in the data. However, for array designs that are suboptimal for spatially separating brain signal and interference, this method can remove brain signal components. We contrast these properties with the more typically used multipole expansion, Signal Space Separation (SSS), which never reduces brain signal amplitude but is less robust to the effect of sensor nonlinearity errors on interference rejection and can increase noise in the data if the system is sub-optimally designed (as it is an oblique projection). We conclude with an empirical example utilizing AMM to maximize signal to noise ratio (SNR) for the stimulus locked neuronal response to a flickering visual checkerboard in a 128-channel OPM system and demonstrate up to 40 dB software shielding in real data.

Optically Pumped Intensive Light Amplification from a Blue Oligomer.

Project description:We demonstrated the time-resolved dynamics of laser action from the conductive oligomer (CO) 1,4-Bis(9-ethyl-3-carbazo-vinylene)-9,9-dihexyl-fluorene (BECV-DHF). Absorption and fluorescence spectra were studied for BECV-DHF in different solvents under a wide range of concentrations. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectrum was measured using simulation and experiments. The Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-VIS) spectra of the BECV-DHF were simulated in two different solutions. This CO formed a dimer and had two vibration bands in nonpolar solvents, partially dissolved in polar protic solvents, and created an H-type aggregate in polar aprotic solvents. BECV-DHF produced amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) at 464 nm in many solvents. The high efficiency of ASE is due to the waveguiding and self-assembly nature of the oligomer, which is very rare for optically pumped systems. However, BECV-DHF did not produce ASE in polar protic solvents. BECV-DHF produced ASE in both longitudinal and transverse pumping, and the full-width half maximum (FWHM) was 4 nm and 8 nm respectively for different solvents, such as toluene and acetone. The CO had a very low threshold pump energy (~0.5 mJ). The ASE efficiency was approximately 20%. The time-resolved spectroscopy (TRS) studies showed a temporal Gaussian-shaped ASE output from this CO. BECV-DHF shows remarkably high stability compare to the conjugated polymer (CP) PFO-co-pX.

Broadband omnidirectional antireflection coating based on subwavelength surface Mie resonators.

Project description:Reflection is a natural phenomenon that occurs when light passes the interface between materials with different refractive index. In many applications, such as solar cells or photodetectors, reflection is an unwanted loss process. Many ways to reduce reflection from a substrate have been investigated so far, including dielectric interference coatings, surface texturing, adiabatic index matching and scattering from plasmonic nanoparticles. Here we present an entirely new concept that suppresses the reflection of light from a silicon surface over a broad spectral range. A two-dimensional periodic array of subwavelength silicon nanocylinders designed to possess strongly substrate-coupled Mie resonances yields almost zero total reflectance over the entire spectral range from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared. This new antireflection concept relies on the strong forward scattering that occurs when a scattering structure is placed in close proximity to a high-index substrate with a high optical density of states.

Experimental realization of deep-subwavelength confinement in dielectric optical resonators.

Project description:The ability to highly localize light with strong electric field enhancement is critical for enabling higher-efficiency solar cells, light sources, and modulators. While deep-subwavelength modes can be realized with plasmonic resonators, large losses in these metal structures preclude most practical applications. We developed an alternative approach to achieving subwavelength localization of the electric and displacement fields that is not accompanied by inhibitive losses. We experimentally demonstrate a dielectric bowtie photonic crystal structure that supports mode volumes commensurate with plasmonic elements and quality factors that reveal ultralow losses. Our approach opens the door to the extremely strong light-matter interaction regime with, simultaneously incorporating both an ultralow mode volume and an ultrahigh quality factor, that had remained elusive in optical resonators.

Power Balance and Temperature in Optically Pumped Spasers and Nanolasers.

Project description:Spasers and nanolasers produce a significant amount of heat, which impedes their realizability. We numerically investigate the farfield emission and thermal load in optically pumped spasers with a coupled electromagnetic/thermal model, including additional temperature discontinuities due to interfacial Kapitza resistance. This approach allows to explore multiple combinations of constitutive materials suitable for robust manufacturable spasers. Three main channels of heat generation are quantified: metal absorption at pumping and spasing wavelengths and nonradiative relaxations in the gain material. Out-radiated power becomes comparable with absorption for spasers of realistic dimensions. Two optimized spaser configurations emitting light near 520 nm are compared in detail: a prolate metal-core/gain-shell and an oblate gain-core/metal-shell. The metal-shell design, which with the increasing size transforms into a metal-clad nanolaser, achieves an internal light-extraction efficiency of 22.4%, and stably operates up to several hundred picoseconds, an order of magnitude longer than the metal-core spaser.
