Interspecific interactions through 2 million years: are competitive outcomes predictable?

ABSTRACT: Ecological interactions affect the survival and reproduction of individuals. However, ecological interactions are notoriously difficult to measure in extinct populations, hindering our understanding of how the outcomes of interactions such as competition vary in time and influence long-term evolutionary changes. Here, the outcomes of spatial competition in a temporally continuous community over evolutionary timescales are presented for the first time. Our research domain is encrusting cheilostome bryozoans from the Wanganui Basin of New Zealand over a ca 2 Myr time period (Pleistocene to Recent). We find that a subset of species can be identified as consistent winners, and others as consistent losers, in the sense that they win or lose interspecific competitive encounters statistically more often than the null hypothesis of 50%. Most species do not improve or worsen in their competitive abilities through the 2 Myr period, but a minority of species are winners in some intervals and losers in others. We found that conspecifics tend to cluster spatially and interact more often than expected under a null hypothesis: most of these are stand-off interactions where the two colonies involved stopped growing at edges of encounter. Counterintuitively, competitive ability has no bearing on ecological dominance.

Project description:Invasive species can cause substantial ecological impacts on native biodiversity. While ecological theory attempts to explain the processes involved in the trophic integration of invaders into native food webs and their competitive impacts on resident species, results are equivocal. In addition, quantifying the relative strength of impacts from non-native species (interspecific competition) versus the release of native conspecifics (intraspecific competition) is important but rarely completed.Two model non-native fishes, the globally invasive Cyprinus carpio and Carassius auratus, and the model native fish Tinca tinca, were used in a pond experiment to test how increased intra- and interspecific competition influenced trophic niches and somatic growth rates. This was complemented by samples collected from three natural fish communities where the model fishes were present. The isotopic niche, calculated using stable isotope data, represented the trophic niche.The pond experiment used additive and substitutive treatments to quantify the trophic niche variation that resulted from intra- and interspecific competitive interactions. Although the trophic niche sizes of the model species were not significantly altered by any competitive treatment, they all resulted in patterns of interspecific niche divergence. Increased interspecific competition caused the trophic niche of T. tinca to shift to a significantly higher trophic position, whereas intraspecific competition caused its position to shift towards elevated δ13C. These patterns were independent of impacts on fish growth rates, which were only significantly altered when interspecific competition was elevated.In the natural fish communities, patterns of trophic niche partitioning between the model fishes was evident, with no niche sharing. Comparison of these results with those of the experiment revealed the most similar results between the two approaches were for the niche partitioning between sympatric T. tinca and C. carpio.These results indicate that trophic niche divergence facilitates the integration of introduced species into food webs, but there are differences in how this manifests between introductions that increase inter- and intraspecific competition. In entirety, these results suggest that the initial ecological response to an introduction appears to be a trophic re-organisation of the food web that minimises the trophic interactions between competing species. Project description:In fish, interspecific interactions between nonnative and other sympatric species are considered determinants in shaping species assemblages. Such interactions can also arise between nonnative fish species only, including salmonids such as the brown trout (Salmo trutta, Linnaeus, 1758) and the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Walbaum, 1792), returning contrasting outcomes. The present manipulative experiment was aimed at exploring the effect of interspecific competition on the body growth and the oxidative status of parr (2 + -year-old individuals) of the brown trout and the rainbow trout. Allopatric (intraspecific competition) and sympatric (interspecific competition) populations of these species were experimentally recreated in two wild streams. At the end of a 2-month-long experiment, changes in specific growth rate (SGR), oxidative status (i.e., levels of reactive oxygen species and activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase - SOD, catalase - CAT and glutathione peroxidase - GPx) and oxidative damage (i.e., lipid peroxidation) were investigated in brown and rainbow trout individuals maintained in allopatric or sympatric populations. Sympatric interactions between rainbow and brown trout parr resulted in a significant decrease in SGR of brown trout individuals only. Moreover, an overall modulation of the oxidative status, in terms of an increase in ROS levels coupled with the activation of SOD and CAT activity, occurred in brown trout individuals under sympatric conditions. These findings might suggest that, under sympatric conditions, parr of the rainbow trout are more competitive than brown trout for food acquisition. However, this competition affected the antioxidant defenses of the brown trout only, probably because of reduced ingestion of dietary antioxidants or increased physical activity and aggressive behavior. Thus, interspecific interactions can induce physiological and phenotypic effects on parr of nonnative salmonids, with potential consequences on the establishment of populations of these species in freshwater ecosystems.
