ABSTRACT: An unprecedented 3D hetero-triple-walled metal-organic framework is obtained by straightforward elaboration of the mixed molecular building block (MBB) strategy. In this approach, multiple individual flexible and rigid MBBs are integrated into one composite building block as separate layers, which are of the same shape but different sizes. This MOF shows exceptional water stability and the application of Li-ion battery electrodes.

Soft Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks Constructed Using a Flexible Organic Cage Hinge.

Project description:Soft porous crystals combine flexibility and porosity, allowing them to respond structurally to external physical and chemical environments. However, striking the right balance between flexibility and sufficient rigidity for porosity is challenging, particularly for molecular crystals formed by using weak intermolecular interactions. Here, we report a flexible oxygen-bridged prismatic organic cage molecule, Cage-6-COOH, which has three pillars that exhibit "hinge-like" rotational motion in the solid state. Cage-6-COOH can form a range of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) where the "hinge" can accommodate a remarkable 67° dihedral angle range between neighboring units. This stems both from flexibility in the noncovalent hydrogen-bonding motifs in the HOFs and the molecular flexibility in the oxygen-linked cage hinge itself. The range of structures for Cage-6-COOH includes two topologically complex interpenetrated HOFs, CageHOF-2α and CageHOF-2β. CageHOF-2α is nonporous, while CageHOF-2β has permanent porosity and a surface area of 458 m2 g-1. The flexibility of Cage-6-COOH allows this molecule to rapidly transform from a low-crystallinity solid into the two crystalline interpenetrated HOFs, CageHOF-2α and CageHOF-2β, under mild conditions simply by using acetonitrile or ethanol vapor, respectively. This self-healing behavior was selective, with the CageHOF-2β structure exhibiting structural memory behavior.

Spatial distribution modulation of mixed building blocks in metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:The placement of mixed building blocks at precise locations in metal-organic frameworks is critical to creating pore environments suitable for advanced applications. Here we show that the spatial distribution of mixed building blocks in metal-organic frameworks can be modulated by exploiting the different temperature sensitivities of the diffusion coefficients and exchange rate constants of the building blocks. By tuning the reaction temperature of the forward linker exchange from one metal-organic framework to another isoreticular metal-organic framework, core-shell microstructural and uniform microstructural metal-organic frameworks are obtained. The strategy can be extended to the fabrication of inverted core-shell microstructures and multi-shell microstructures and applied for the modulation of the spatial distribution of framework metal ions during the post-synthetic metal exchange process of a Zn-based metal-organic framework to an isostructural Ni-based metal-organic framework.

Metal-organic frameworks constructed from monomeric, dimeric and trimeric phenanthroline citrate zinc building units.

Project description:Adduct of mononuclear and dinuclear citrate zinc complex [Zn(Hcit)(phen)(H2O)][Zn2(Hcit)(phen)2(H2O)3]·13.5H2O (1) and its aggregate [Zn3(Hcit)2(phen)4]n·14nH2O (2) (H4cit = citric acid, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) were synthesized in weak acidic solutions. The former was obtained from the reaction of zinc nitrate, citric acid and phenanthroline in a molar ratio of 3 : 2 : 3, while a slightly excess of phenanthroline results in the formation of the polymeric product 2 in a molar ratio of 3 : 2 : 4. Transformation of 1 to 2 was finished by the reaction of 1 with an equimolar of phenanthroline in 72% yield. Reverse conversion of 2 to 1 is obtained in 77% yield, showing an equilibrium between 1 and 2. Neutral compound 1 consists of one monomeric anionic unit [Zn(Hcit)(phen)(H2O)]- and one dimeric cationic unit [Zn2(Hcit)(phen)2(H2O)3]+ that connect each other by strong hydrogen bonds [O6?O4w 2.636(2); O7?O3w 2.630(3) Å]. In 2, the citrate ligand links each trinuclear unit [Zn3(Hcit)2(phen)4] to generate an infinite 1D chain that extents into a 3D supramolecular structure by intra- and inter-molecular hydrogen bonds. Moreover, 1 and 2 exhibit strong fluorescence at room temperature.

The Anisotropic Responses of a Flexible Metal-Organic Framework Constructed from Asymmetric Flexible Linkers and Heptanuclear Zinc Carboxylate Secondary Building Units.

Project description:A new porous and flexible metal-organic framework (MOF) has been synthesized from the flexible asymmetric linker N-(4-carboxyphenyl)succinamate (CSA) and heptanuclear zinc oxo-clusters of formula [Zn7O2(carboxylate)10DMF2] involving two coordinated terminal DMF ligands. The structural response of this MOF to the removal or exchange of its guest molecules has been probed using a combination of experimental and computational approaches. The topology of the material, involving double linker connections in the a and b directions and single linker connections along the c axis, is shown to be key in the material's anisotropic response. The a and b directions remain locked during guest removal, whereas the c axis linker undergoes large changes significantly reducing the material's void space. The changes to the c axis linker involve a combination of a hinge motion on the linker's rigid side and conformational rearrangements on its flexible end, which were probed in detail during this process despite the presence of crystallographic disorder along this axis, which prevented accurate characterization by experimental methods alone. Although inactive during guest removal, the flexible ends of the a and b axis linkers are observed to play a prominent role during DMF to DMSO solvent exchange, facilitating the exchange reaction arising in the cluster.

Hierarchical packing of racemic metallosupramolecular cages with Ni(II)-based triple-stranded helicate building blocks.

Project description:Three novel hierarchical Ni-based metallosupramolecular cages were constructed from nickel ions, pyridine dicarboxylates and isophthalate derivative ligands (the substituents on C5 of isophthalate are methyl, tert-butyl and bromo groups). In every cage, two multinuclear nickel clusters, assembled from four nickel atoms and three pyridine dicarboxylate ligands, are interlinked by three isophthalate-derivative ligands to form a nickel-based triple-stranded helicate (TSH), which then becomes the supramolecular building block for the fabrication of a metallocage. Six homochiral TSH supramolecular building blocks, either left (M)-handed or right (P)-handed, are connected by four linking nickel atoms to generate M6 and P6 discrete racemic cage molecules (M6 - cage with six M-TSHs; P6 - cage with six P-TSHs). The crystal packing of the racemic cages was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. An additional cobalt-based molecular cage with 5-methylisophthalate bridging ligands was synthesized for host-guest interaction studies. The methyl groups in Co- and Ni-TSH can act as guest units to be accommodated in the cone-shaped metal clusters (host) of an adjacent cage.

Biomimetic integration of functionally controlled modular tissue building blocks for engineering 3D vascularized adipose tissue.

Project description:Adipose tissue is highly vascularized, which is crucial for homeostasis and energy storage. Current efforts to engineer 3D vascularized adipose tissue in vitro typically involve co-culturing adipocytes and endothelial cells, but adipogenic differentiation often suppresses endothelial function. In this study, we propose a novel approach to reconstruct vascularized adipose tissues in vitro by effectively coupling adipogenesis and vasculogenesis. First, we developed adipo-inductive nanofibers (ID/F@INS) that contain indomethacin and insulin. The in vitro adipogenesis of human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs) in general medium was significantly enhanced in adipogenic spheroids (AS) prepared with hADSCs and ID/F@INS, which were encapsulated in a gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel. To further replicate clustering during de novo adipogenesis, we generated AS of varying sizes and found that larger spheroids exhibited markedly greater adipogenesis than smaller ones. At the same time, we used hADSCs and human umbilical vein endothelial cells to generate vascular spheroids (VS). The biomimetic integration of AS and VS within GelMA hydrogels enabled us to investigate the interactions between de novo adipogenesis and vascularization. The integration of the two types of spheroids (VS:AS ratio of 2:1) significantly improved vascular network formation, indicating the concurrent stimulation of adipogenesis and vasculogenesis. This system was then applied to develop an in vitro obesity-like white adipose dysfunction model characterized by reduced vascularization and the elevated expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. In addition, we found both vascularization and adipogenesis in vivo when we implanted the engineered tissue into mice, demonstrating the potential of our tissue for therapeutic applications in tissue reconstruction.

Cycloalkyl Groups as Building Blocks of Artificial Carbohydrate Receptors: Studies with Macrocycles Bearing Flexible Side-Arms.

Project description:The cyclopentyl group was expected to act as a building block for artificial carbohydrate receptors and to participate in van der Waals contacts with the carbohydrate substrate in a similar way as observed for the pyrrolidine ring of proline in the crystal structures of protein-carbohydrate complexes. Systematic binding studies with a series of 1,3,5-trisubstituted 2,4,6-triethylbenzenes bearing various cycloalkyl groups as recognition units provided indications of the involvement of these groups in the complexation process and showed the influence of the ring size on the receptor efficiency. Representatives of compounds that exhibit a macrocyclic backbone and flexible side arms were now chosen as further model systems to investigate whether the previously observed effects represent a general trend. Binding studies with these macrocycles towards β-D-glucopyranoside, an all-equatorial substituted carbohydrate substrate, included 1H NMR spectroscopic titrations and microcalorimetric investigations. The performed studies confirmed the previously observed tendency and showed that the compound bearing cyclohexyl groups displays the best binding properties.

Template-Based Geometric Simulation of Flexible Frameworks.

Template-based geometric simulation is a specialised method for modelling flexible framework structures made up of rigid units. We review the background, development and implementation of the method, and its applications to the study of framework materials such as zeolites and perovskites. The "flexibility window" property of zeolite frameworks is a particularly significant discovery made using geometric simulation. Software implementing geometric simulation of framework materials, "GASP", is freely available to researchers.

Precise fabrication of porous polymer frameworks using rigid polyisocyanides as building blocks: from structural regulation to efficient iodine capture.

Project description:Porous materials have recently attracted much attention owing to their fascinating structures and broad applications. Moreover, exploring novel porous polymers affording the efficient capture of iodine is of significant interest. In contrast to the reported porous polymers fabricated with small molecular blocks, we herein report the preparation of porous polymer frameworks using rigid polyisocyanides as building blocks. First, tetrahedral four-arm star polyisocyanides with predictable molecular weight and low dispersity were synthesized; the chain-ends of the rigid polyisocyanide blocks were then crosslinked, yielding well-defined porous organic frameworks with a designed pore size and narrow distribution. Polymers of appropriate pore size were observed to efficiently capture radioactive iodine in both aqueous and vapor phases. More than 98% of iodine could be captured within 1 minute from a saturated aqueous solution (capacity of up to 3.2 g g-1), and an adsorption capacity of up to 574 wt% of iodine in vapor was measured within 4 hours. Moreover, the polymers could be recovered and recycled for iodine capture for at least six times, while maintaining high performance.

Four-dimensional micro-building blocks.

Project description:Four-dimensional (4D) printing relies on multimaterial printing, reinforcement patterns, or micro/nanofibrous additives as programmable tools to achieve desired shape reconfigurations. However, existing programming approaches still follow the so-called origami design principle to generate reconfigurable structures by self-folding stacked 2D materials, particularly at small scales. Here, we propose a programmable modular design that directly constructs 3D reconfigurable microstructures capable of sophisticated 3D-to-3D shape transformations by assembling 4D micro-building blocks. 4D direct laser writing is used to print two-photon polymerizable, stimuli-responsive hydrogels to construct building blocks at micrometer scales. Denavit-Hartenberg (DH) parameters, used to define robotic arm kinematics, are introduced as guidelines for how to assemble the micro-building blocks and plan the 3D motion of assembled chain blocks. Last, a 3D-printed microscaled transformer capable of changing its shape from a race car to a humanoid robot is devised and fabricated using the DH parameters to guide the motion of various assembled compartments.
