Geostatistical analysis of trace elements PXRF dataset of near-surface semi-arid soils from Central Botswana.

ABSTRACT: Geospatial dataset of trace elements including manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), titanium (Ti), rubidium (Rb), strontium (Sr), thorium (Th), Vanadium (V) and Zirconium (Zr) of near-surface soils in a Cu-Ni prospecting field at Airstrip North, Central Botswana were statistically analysed. Grid sampling method was used in the field data collection. The relatively new portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (Delta Premium, 510890, USA) technology in a "soil" mode was used to measure the concentrations of trace elements in the soils. The data presented was obtained from the average reading of two soil samples collected from same point but passed through sieves. Sequel to DOI: 10.1016/j.dib.2016.08.026 (P.N. Eze, V.S. Project description:This article contains a statistically analyzed dataset of the heavy metals including Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb contents of near-surface (~30 cm depth) soils in a Cu-Ni prospecting field at Airstrip North, Central Botswana. The soils developed on paragneisses and amphibolites parent materials in a semi-arid environment with hardveld vegetation, "The geology of the Topisi area" (Key et al., 1994) [1]. Grid sampling was adopted in the field data collection. Microbial diversity in the arid and semi-arid soils of Botswana.

Project description:To date, little research has been conducted on the landscape-scale distribution of soil microbial communities and the factors driving their community structures in the drylands of Africa. We investigated the influence of landscape-scale variables on microbial community structure and diversity across different ecological zones in Botswana. We used amplicon sequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA gene and fungal internal transcribed spacers (ITS) and a suite of environmental parameters to determine drivers of microbial community structure. Bacterial communities were dominated by Actinomycetota (21.1%), Pseudomonadota (15.9%), and Acidobacteriota (10.9%). The dominant fungal communities were Ascomycota (57.3%) and Basidiomycota (7.5%). Soil pH, mean annual precipitation, total organic carbon, and soil ions (calcium and magnesium) were the major predictors of microbial community diversity and structure. The co-occurrence patterns of bacterial and fungal communities were influenced by soil pH, with network-specific fungi-bacteria interactions observed. Potential keystone taxa were identified for communities in the different networks. Most of these interactions were between microbial families potentially involved in carbon cycling, suggesting functional redundancy in these soils. Our findings highlight the significance of soil pH in determining the landscape-scale structure of microbial communities in Botswana's dryland soils.

Novel heliobacteria of a few semi-arid tropical soils.

Project description:Out of forty rhizosphere soils collected from semi arid tropical regions of Andhra Pradesh, India, 30 gave positive enrichments for heliobacteria. These bacteria were recognized by the presence of bacteriochlorophyll-g together with endospores in the initial enrichments. Using group specific primers of 16S rRNA gene, ten monoheliobacterial cultures were sequenced. They were finally grouped into 3 clusters based on the 16S rRNA gene similarity. Based on a few phenotypic characters, in addition to genetic characterization, we identified them as potential novel species and the 16S rRNA gene sequences were deposited with EMBL.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils of an industrial area in semi-arid Uzbekistan: spatial distribution, relationship with trace metals and risk assessment.

Project description:The concentrations, composition patterns, transport and fate of PAHs in semi-arid and arid soils such as in Central Asia are not well known. Such knowledge is required to manage the risk posed by these toxic chemicals to humans and ecosystems in these regions. To fill this knowledge gap, we determined the concentrations of 21 parent PAHs, 4,5-methylenephenanthrene, 6 alkylated PAHs, and biphenyl in soils from 11 sampling locations (0-10, 10-20 cm soil depths) along a 20-km transect downwind from the Almalyk metal mining and metallurgical industrial complex (Almalyk MMC), Uzbekistan. The concentrations of Σ29 PAHs and Σ16 US-EPA PAHs were 41-2670 ng g-1 and 29-1940 ng g-1, respectively. The highest concentration of Σ29 PAHs occurred in the immediate vicinity of the copper smelting factory of the Almalyk MMC. The concentrations in topsoil decreased substantially to a value of ≤ 200 ng g-1 (considered as background concentration) at ≥ 2 km away from the factory. Low molecular weight PAHs dominated the PAH mixtures at less contaminated sites and high molecular weight PAHs at the most contaminated site. The concentration of Σ16 US-EPA PAHs did not exceed the precautionary values set by the soil quality guidelines of, e.g., Switzerland and Germany. Similarly, the benzo[a]pyrene equivalent concentration in soils near the Almalyk MMC did not exceed the value set by the Canadian guidelines for the protection of humans from carcinogenic PAHs in soils. Consequently, the cancer risk due to exposure to PAHs in these soils can be considered as low.

Aridity threshold in controlling ecosystem nitrogen cycling in arid and semi-arid grasslands

Project description:Higher aridity and more extreme rainfall events in drylands are predicted under climate change. Yet it is unclear how changing precipitation regimes may affect nitrogen (N) cycling, especially in areas with extremely high aridity. Here we investigated soil N isotopic values (M-NM-415N) along a 3200 km aridity gradient and show a hump-shaped relationship between soil M-NM-415N and aridity index (AI) with a threshold at AI=0.32. Also, using a micro-array metageomics tool named GeoChip 5.0, we showed that Variations of nitrification and denitrification gene abundance along the gradient which provide further evidence for the existence of this threshold. Data support the hypothesis that the increase of gaseous N losses is higher than the increase of net plant N accumulation with increasing AI below AI=0.32, while the opposite is favoured above this threshold. Our results suggest the importance of N-cycling microbes in extremely dry areas and the different controlling factors of N cycling on the either side of the threshold.

Effects of acidifiers on soil greenhouse gas emissions in calcareous soils in a semi-arid area.

Project description:In most agricultural fields, when soil pH is high, elemental sulfur or sulfuric acid are used to reduce soil pH and increase the availability of macro and micronutrients for optimum crop yield. However, how these inputs impact soil greenhouse gas emissions is unknown. This study aimed to measure the amount of greenhouse gas emissions and pH after the application of various doses of elemental sulfur (ES) and sulfuric acid (SA). Using static chambers, this study quantifies soil greenhouse gas emissions (CO2, N2O, and CH4) for 12 months after the application of ES (200, 400, 600, 800, and 1000 kg ha-1) and SA (20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 kg ha-1) to a calcareous soil (pH 8.1) in Zanjan, Iran. Also, in order to simulate rainfed and dryland farming which are common practices in this area, this study was conducted with and without sprinkler irrigation. Application of ES slowly decreased soil pH (more than half a unit) over the year whereas application of SA temporarily reduced the pH (less than a half unit) for a few weeks. CO2 and N2O emissions and CH4 uptake were maximum during summer and lowest in winter. Cumulative CO2 fluxes ranged from 1859.2 kg-1 CO2-C ha-1 year-1 in the control treatment to 2269.6 kg CO2-C ha-1 year-1 in the 1000 kg ha-1 ES treatment. Cumulative fluxes for N2O-N were 2.5 and 3.7 kg N2O-N ha-1 year-1 and cumulative CH4 uptakes were 0.2 and 2.3 kg CH4-C ha-1 year-1 in the same treatments. Irrigation significantly increased CO2 and N2O emissions and, depending on the amount of ES applied, decreased or increased CH4 uptake. SA application had a negligible effect on GHGs emissions in this experiment and only the highest amount of SA altered GHGs emissions.
