Fast ensemble representations for abstract visual impressions.

ABSTRACT: Much of the richness of perception is conveyed by implicit, rather than image or feature-level, information. The perception of animacy or lifelikeness of objects, for example, cannot be predicted from image level properties alone. Instead, perceiving lifelikeness seems to be an inferential process and one might expect it to be cognitively demanding and serial rather than fast and automatic. If perceptual mechanisms exist to represent lifelikeness, then observers should be able to perceive this information quickly and reliably, and should be able to perceive the lifelikeness of crowds of objects. Here, we report that observers are highly sensitive to the lifelikeness of random objects and even groups of objects. Observers' percepts of crowd lifelikeness are well predicted by independent observers' lifelikeness judgements of the individual objects comprising that crowd. We demonstrate that visual impressions of abstract dimensions can be achieved with summary statistical representations, which underlie our rich perceptual experience.

Ensemble representations reveal distinct neural coding of visual working memory.

Project description:We characterized the population-level neural coding of ensemble representations in visual working memory from human electroencephalography. Ensemble representations provide a unique opportunity to investigate structured representations of working memory because the visual system encodes high-order summary statistics as well as noisy sensory inputs in a hierarchical manner. Here, we consistently observe stable coding of simple features as well as the ensemble mean in frontocentral electrodes, which even correlated with behavioral indices of the ensemble across individuals. In occipitoparietal electrodes, however, we find that remembered features are dynamically coded over time, whereas neural coding of the ensemble mean is absent in the old/new judgment task. In contrast, both dynamic and stable coding are found in the continuous estimation task. Our findings suggest that the prefrontal cortex holds behaviorally relevant abstract representations while visual representations in posterior and visual areas are modulated by the task demands.

Modelling brain representations of abstract concepts.

Project description:conceptual representations are critical for human cognition. Despite their importance, key properties of these representations remain poorly understood. Here, we used computational models of distributional semantics to predict multivariate fMRI activity patterns during the activation and contextualization of abstract concepts. We devised a task in which participants had to embed abstract nouns into a story that they developed around a given background context. We found that representations in inferior parietal cortex were predicted by concept similarities emerging in models of distributional semantics. By constructing different model families, we reveal the models' learning trajectories and delineate how abstract and concrete training materials contribute to the formation of brain-like representations. These results inform theories about the format and emergence of abstract conceptual representations in the human brain.

Unveiling the abstract format of mnemonic representations.

Project description:Working memory (WM) enables information storage for future use, bridging the gap between perception and behavior. We hypothesize that WM representations are abstractions of low-level perceptual features. However, the neural nature of these putative abstract representations has thus far remained impenetrable. Here, we demonstrate that distinct visual stimuli (oriented gratings and moving dots) are flexibly recoded into the same WM format in visual and parietal cortices when that representation is useful for memory-guided behavior. Specifically, the behaviorally relevant features of the stimuli (orientation and direction) were extracted and recoded into a shared mnemonic format that takes the form of an abstract line-like pattern. We conclude that mnemonic representations are abstractions of percepts that are more efficient than and proximal to the behaviors they guide.

Abstract representations of small sets in newborns.

Project description:From the very first days of life, newborns are not tied to represent narrow, modality- and object-specific aspects of their environment. Rather, they sometimes react to abstract properties shared by stimuli of very different nature, such as approximate numerosity or magnitude. As of now, however, there is no evidence that newborns possess abstract representations that apply to small sets: in particular, while newborns can match large approximate numerosities across senses, this ability does not extend to small numerosities. In two experiments, we presented newborn infants (N = 64, age 17 to 98 h) with patterned sets AB or ABB simultaneously in the auditory and visual modalities. Auditory patterns were presented as periodic sequences of sounds (AB: triangle-drum-triangle-drum-triangle-drum …; ABB: triangle-drum-drum-triangle-drum-drum-triangle-drum-drum …), and visual patterns as arrays of 2 or 3 shapes (AB: circle-diamond; ABB: circle-diamond-diamond). In both experiments, we found that participants reacted and looked longer when the patterns matched across the auditory and visual modalities - provided that the first stimulus they received was congruent. These findings uncover the existence of yet another type of abstract representations at birth, applying to small sets. As such, they bolster the hypothesis that newborns are endowed with the capacity to represent their environment in broad strokes, in terms of its most abstract properties. This capacity for abstraction could later serve as a scaffold for infants to learn about the particular entities surrounding them.

Images of the unseen: extrapolating visual representations for abstract and concrete words in a data-driven computational model.

Project description:Theories of grounded cognition assume that conceptual representations are grounded in sensorimotor experience. However, abstract concepts such as jealousy or childhood have no directly associated referents with which such sensorimotor experience can be made; therefore, the grounding of abstract concepts has long been a topic of debate. Here, we propose (a) that systematic relations exist between semantic representations learned from language on the one hand and perceptual experience on the other hand, (b) that these relations can be learned in a bottom-up fashion, and (c) that it is possible to extrapolate from this learning experience to predict expected perceptual representations for words even where direct experience is missing. To test this, we implement a data-driven computational model that is trained to map language-based representations (obtained from text corpora, representing language experience) onto vision-based representations (obtained from an image database, representing perceptual experience), and apply its mapping function onto language-based representations for abstract and concrete words outside the training set. In three experiments, we present participants with these words, accompanied by two images: the image predicted by the model and a random control image. Results show that participants' judgements were in line with model predictions even for the most abstract words. This preference was stronger for more concrete items and decreased for the more abstract ones. Taken together, our findings have substantial implications in support of the grounding of abstract words, suggesting that we can tap into our previous experience to create possible visual representation we don't have.

Optimizing the human learnability of abstract network representations.

Project description:Precisely how humans process relational patterns of information in knowledge, language, music, and society is not well understood. Prior work in the field of statistical learning has demonstrated that humans process such information by building internal models of the underlying network structure. However, these mental maps are often inaccurate due to limitations in human information processing. The existence of such limitations raises clear questions: Given a target network that one wishes for a human to learn, what network should one present to the human? Should one simply present the target network as-is, or should one emphasize certain parts of the network to proactively mitigate expected errors in learning? To investigate these questions, we study the optimization of network learnability in a computational model of human learning. Evaluating an array of synthetic and real-world networks, we find that learnability is enhanced by reinforcing connections within modules or clusters. In contrast, when networks contain significant core-periphery structure, we find that learnability is best optimized by reinforcing peripheral edges between low-degree nodes. Overall, our findings suggest that the accuracy of human network learning can be systematically enhanced by targeted emphasis and de-emphasis of prescribed sectors of information.

Ellipsoidal Abstract and Illustrative Representations of Molecular Surfaces.

Project description:Molecular visualization is often challenged with rendering of large molecular structures in real time. The key to LOD (level-of-detail), a classical technology, lies in designing a series of hierarchical abstractions of protein. In the paper, we improved the smoothness of transition for these abstractions by constructing a complete binary tree of a protein. In order to reduce the degree of expansion of the geometric model corresponding to the high level of abstraction, we introduced minimum ellipsoidal enveloping and some post-processing techniques. At the same time, a simple, ellipsoid drawing method based on graphics processing unit (GPU) is used that can guarantee that the drawing speed is not lower than the existing sphere-drawing method. Finally, we evaluated the rendering performance and effect on series of molecules with different scales. The post-processing techniques applied, diffuse shading and contours, further conceal the expansion problem and highlight the surface details.

Fast and automatic activation of an abstract representation of money in the human ventral visual pathway.

Project description:Money, when used as an incentive, activates the same neural circuits as rewards associated with physiological needs. However, unlike physiological rewards, monetary stimuli are cultural artifacts: how are monetary stimuli identified in the first place? How and when does the brain identify a valid coin, i.e. a disc of metal that is, by social agreement, endowed with monetary properties? We took advantage of the changes in the Euro area in 2002 to compare neural responses to valid coins (Euros, Australian Dollars) with neural responses to invalid coins that have lost all monetary properties (French Francs, Finnish Marks). We show in magneto-encephalographic recordings, that the ventral visual pathway automatically distinguishes between valid and invalid coins, within only ∼150 ms. This automatic categorization operates as well on coins subjects were familiar with as on unfamiliar coins. No difference between neural responses to scrambled controls could be detected. These results could suggest the existence of a generic, all-purpose neural representation of money that is independent of experience. This finding is reminiscent of a central assumption in economics, money fungibility, or the fact that a unit of money is substitutable to another. From a neural point of view, our findings may indicate that the ventral visual pathway, a system previously thought to analyze visual features such as shape or color and to be influenced by daily experience, could also able to use conceptual attributes such as monetary validity to categorize familiar as well as unfamiliar visual objects. The symbolic abilities of the posterior fusiform region suggested here could constitute an efficient neural substrate to deal with culturally defined symbols, independently of experience, which probably fostered money's cultural emergence and success.

Abstract representations emerge in human hippocampal neurons during inference.

Project description:Humans have the remarkable cognitive capacity to rapidly adapt to changing environments. Central to this capacity is the ability to form high-level, abstract representations that take advantage of regularities in the world to support generalization1. However, little is known about how these representations are encoded in populations of neurons, how they emerge through learning and how they relate to behaviour2,3. Here we characterized the representational geometry of populations of neurons (single units) recorded in the hippocampus, amygdala, medial frontal cortex and ventral temporal cortex of neurosurgical patients performing an inferential reasoning task. We found that only the neural representations formed in the hippocampus simultaneously encode several task variables in an abstract, or disentangled, format. This representational geometry is uniquely observed after patients learn to perform inference, and consists of disentangled directly observable and discovered latent task variables. Learning to perform inference by trial and error or through verbal instructions led to the formation of hippocampal representations with similar geometric properties. The observed relation between representational format and inference behaviour suggests that abstract and disentangled representational geometries are important for complex cognition.

Abstract representations in temporal cortex support generative linguistic processing.

Project description:Generativity, the ability to create and evaluate novel constructions, is a fundamental property of human language and cognition. The productivity of generative processes is determined by the scope of the representations they engage. Here we examine the neural representation of reduplication, a productive phonological process that can create novel forms through patterned syllable copying (e.g. ba-mih → ba-ba-mih, ba-mih-mih, or ba-mih-ba). Using MRI-constrained source estimates of combined MEG/EEG data collected during an auditory artificial grammar task, we identified localized cortical activity associated with syllable reduplication pattern contrasts in novel trisyllabic nonwords. Neural decoding analyses identified a set of predominantly right hemisphere temporal lobe regions whose activity reliably discriminated reduplication patterns evoked by untrained, novel stimuli. Effective connectivity analyses suggested that sensitivity to abstracted reduplication patterns was propagated between these temporal regions. These results suggest that localized temporal lobe activity patterns function as abstract representations that support linguistic generativity.
