Dataset for corporate valuation and analyses of peer effects in corporate practices and local factors favoring innovation.

ABSTRACT: This data article provides cross-sectionals on the local values of the coefficients of ROE, R&D-TO-SALES, and TOTAL ASSET as regressors of the MARKET-TO-BOOK ratio and is related to the research article entitled "Do Local Causations Matter? The Effect of Firm Location on the Relations of ROE, R&D, and Firm Size with Market-to-Book" (A. Carosi, 2016) [1]. The data are aggregated at the regional level (NUTS2). The reported data are the regional average values of the coefficients of ROE, R&D-TO-SALES, and LN(TOTAL ASSET) on LN(MARKET-TO-BOOK), estimated upon the Italian non-financial listed firms in 1999-2007. Local coefficient estimates for family firms and utilities are also provided.

Senior executive characteristics: Impact on ESG practices and corporate valuation relationship.

Project description:In recent years, sustainable development and green growth and performance of companies in environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) has received widespread attention from all sectors of society. Based on panel data of A-share listed companies in China from 2009 to 2022, this study employs a two-way fixed effects model to explore the mechanism of the relationship between ESG practices and corporate value, as well as the moderating effect of executive characteristics within this relationship. The results indicate a robust positive relationship between ESG practices and corporate value. ‎However, this relationship is moderated by the academic backgrounds of senior ‎executives, who negatively influence it, and by male executives, who exert a positive ‎moderating effect. Furthermore, this study reveals the variable impacts of ESG practices in different corporate ‎settings, industries, and institutional frameworks. Moreover, it demonstrates how ESG practices ‎boost corporate value through an enhanced reputation and increased government innovation ‎subsidies. It offers new insights on the strategic value of ESG for corporations and ‎policymakers. It also extends the theoretical framework by integrating attention-based and upper ‎echelons perspectives into the ESG discourse. ‎.

Corporate governance practices, barriers and drivers: A survey dataset.

Project description:The dataset presented in this paper is used to examine the corporate governance (CG) practices and compute the CG index among Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) listed firms. Dataset is useful in exploring the different barriers to and drivers of good CG practices. The survey questionnaire was distributed to 350 respondents from 350 PSX listed firms, nevertheless, 120 respondents returned the questionnaire. After reviewing the filled questionnaires, fifteen questionnaires were found to be incomplete. Therefore, the final sample consisted of 105 respondents from 105 PSX listed firms. The survey dataset was analysed by descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and hierarchical multiple linear regression. SPSS 24 was used to analyse the data. For further findings and interpretation, please refer to the research article entitled "Corporate Governance in Extreme Institutional Environment: Evidence From Emerging Economy" [1]. We also suggest referring to another article that was used to develop the survey questionnaire [2].

Crowding in or crowding out? How local government debt influences corporate innovation for China.

Project description:The pressure upon local governments to redeem their debt could affect government fiscal ability. It could consequently affect their fiscal policies on corporations, which might distort corporate innovation. Based on the data of Chinese Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies and the local government implicit short-term debt financed by local government financing vehicles (LGFVs) in 31 provinces, this paper shows that local government debt (LGD) negatively affects corporate R&D investment in China, thereby suggesting a strong crowding-out effect. The crowding-out effect is more pronounced when the firm is a non-state-owned enterprise (NSOE), the firm's size is small, the firm's age is young, or the firm is in the lower market competition. This paper provide evidence by interacting the terms that local government actions, such as consumption of fiscal resources, strengthening tax collection efforts, or consumption of credit resources, might partially account for the crowding-out effect. This study illustrates the innovation costs of local government debt.

Regional Peer Effects of Corporate Tax Avoidance.

Project description:This study empirically demonstrates significant regional peer effects due to tax avoidance. We used peer companies' idiosyncratic stock returns as an instrumental variable to address potential endogeneity problems. The heterogeneity analysis indicates that for companies with a stronger intensity of regional tax collection and management, a higher degree of informatization, and companies with a low management shareholding ratio, the regional peer effects of enterprise tax avoidance are more significant. Finally, we determined that the managers' information learning, reputation consideration, and information communication are key mechanisms propagating peer effects. The conclusions of this paper enrich and expand the peer effect theory of corporate tax avoidance, thereby providing a theoretical basis and empirical evidence for tax authorities in supervising corporate tax avoidance.

Strategic corporate entrepreneurship practices in financial services firms: the role of organizational factors.

Project description:The study explores a hitherto neglected area of strategic corporate entrepreneurship in services firms, the association of organizational factors with different strategic corporate entrepreneurship practices. It represents a first step toward understanding how internal organizational factors may spur different forms of strategic corporate entrepreneurship practices within services firms, especially those operating in the financial sector. Data for the study were collected through a survey study and the sample consisted of employees at a major insurance company in Sweden. The sample includes five offices placed in the north-eastern in Sweden and four offices ubicated in Stockholm. Using structural equation modelling, it was found that whereas organizational factors such as management support and reward/reinforcement have a positive effect on both incremental and discontinuous strategic corporate entrepreneurship practices, the organizational factor work discretion presents a differentiated effect. The study provides an important step toward understanding the internal factors that spur employees toward strategic corporate entrepreneurship practices in financial services firms. Moreover, the study develops a potential measure of incremental and discontinuous strategic corporate entrepreneurship practices. In terms of practical implications, the findings offer managers a solid foundation on which to base their decisions to create and improve an internal organizational environment that facilitates strategic corporate entrepreneurship practices.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s43546-022-00306-2.

A dataset on corporate sustainability disclosure.

Project description:Enterprises, as key emitters, play a vital role in promoting sustainable development. Corporate sustainability disclosure provides a key channel for stakeholders to gain insights into a company's sustainability progress. However, few studies have been conducted to measure sustainability disclosure at the firm level. In this study, we apply the machine learning techniques to listed companies' management discussion and analysis (MD&A) documents and construct a dataset on corporate sustainability disclosure, including the Corporate Sustainability Disclosure Index (CSDI), CSDI_Economic Dimension (CSDI_ECO), CSDI_Environmental Dimension (CSDI_ENV), and CSDI_Social Dimension (CSDI_SOCI). The dataset will be updated annually. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first sustainability disclosure dataset constructed at the firm level. Our dataset reflects corporate managements' sustainability attitudes and promotes the implementation of corporate sustainability strategies and subsequent sustainable economic and social outcomes.

Regional intergenerational mobility and corporate innovation: Evidence from China.

Project description:By stimulating social vitality and improving innovation efficiency, intergenerational mobility plays an essential role in economic development. With the data from China Labor-force Dynamic Survey (CLDS) and A-share listed companies, this paper uses the methodology of intergenerational order correlation to measure regional intergenerational mobility, and examines the impact of regional intergenerational mobility on corporate innovation. The results are as follows: (1) Regional intergenerational mobility promotes corporate innovation both quantitatively and qualitatively, and a series of robustness tests confirm our findings; (2) Two channels identified are government-enterprise human capital allocation and fairness perception; (3) Heterogeneity analysis shows that the innovation effect of regional intergenerational mobility is more significant in the high-tech industry and private enterprises; (4) Multi-dimensional market-oriented policy can be used to get rid of the shackles of low intergenerational mobility on corporate innovation. Our findings provide implications for developing countries on how to address the relationship between inequality and economic development.

Corporate internal control, financial mismatch mitigation and innovation performance.

Project description:Based on the resource allocation optimization theory, from the perspective of internal control (IC) and financial mismatch jointly affecting technological innovation, this study selects the listed enterprises in China's capital market from 2012 to 2020 as the sample, and explores the mechanism among IC, financial mismatch and technological innovation. The results show that effective IC significantly promotes corporate innovation, and mitigates financial mismatch. The mitigation of financial mismatch presents a significant mediating effect between effective IC and innovation output. In Discussion, this study finds that the effects are significantly reflected in non-state-owned enterprises, but not in state-owned enterprises. Finally, it is suggested to improve IC effectiveness continuously, to stimulate innovation vitality, optimize financial resources allocation, and foster new momentum for economic development. And it is suggested to facilitate the transmission effect that effective IC mitigates financial mismatch, and enhances innovation output. Also, the innovation activities in state-owned and non-state-owned enterprises should be coordinated to promote the steady and healthy development of the economy.

Corporate social responsibility, debt financing cost and enterprise innovation.

Project description:Based on the data of A-share listed companies in China from 2016 to 2020, this study empirically analyzes the relationship among corporate social responsibility, debt financing cost and enterprise innovation by constructing a regulated mediation effect model. The results show that enterprises perform social responsibility actively can enhance the level of enterprise innovation. Besides, debt financing cost plays a part of the intermediary role between corporate social responsibility and enterprise innovation. It is found that market competition degree positively regulates the relationship between corporate social responsibility and enterprise innovation, and market competition degree strengthens the part of the intermediary effect of debt financing cost. The conclusions not only help to reveal the impact mechanism of corporate social responsibility on enterprise innovation, but also provide empirical evidence for promoting enterprises to actively assume social responsibility, improve the level of innovation, and provide empirical evidence for the government to formulate corresponding policies according to the degree of competition in different markets.
