Bendable solid-state supercapacitors with Au nanoparticle-embedded graphene hydrogel films.

ABSTRACT: In this study, we fabricate bendable solid-state supercapacitors with Au nanoparticle (NP)-embedded graphene hydrogel (GH) electrodes and investigate the influence of the Au NP embedment on the internal resistance and capacitive performance. Embedding the Au NPs into the GH electrodes results in a decrease of the internal resistance from 35 to 21 Ω, and a threefold reduction of the IR drop at a current density of 5 A/g when compared with GH electrodes without Au NPs. The Au NP-embedded GH supercapacitors (NP-GH SCs) exhibit excellent capacitive performances, with large specific capacitance (135 F/g) and high energy density (15.2 W·h/kg). Moreover, the NP-GH SCs exhibit comparable areal capacitance (168 mF/cm²) and operate under tensile/compressive bending.

Graphene quantum dots as the electrolyte for solid state supercapacitors.

Project description:We propose that graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with a sufficient number of acidic oxygen-bearing functional groups such as -COOH and -OH can serve as solution- and solid- type electrolytes for supercapacitors. Moreover, we found that the ionic conductivity and ion-donating ability of the GQDs could be markedly improved by simply neutralizing their acidic functional groups by using KOH. These neutralized GQDs as the solution- or solid-type electrolytes greatly enhanced the capacitive performance and rate capability of the supercapacitors. The reason for the enhancement can be ascribed to the fully ionization of the weak acidic oxygen-bearing functional groups after neutralization.

Quercetin-solid lipid nanoparticle-embedded hyaluronic acid functionalized hydrogel for immunomodulation to promote bone reconstruction.

Project description:Bone defects are a persistent challenge in clinical practice. Although repair therapies based on tissue-engineered materials, which are known to have a crucial role in defective bone regeneration, have gathered increased attention, the current treatments for massive bone defects have several limitations. In the present study, based on the immunomodulatory inflammatory microenvironment properties of quercetin, we encapsulated quercetin-solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) in a hydrogel. Temperature-responsive poly(ε-caprolactone-co-lactide)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(ε-caprolactone-co-lactide) modifications were coupled to the main chain of hyaluronic acid hydrogel, constructing a novel, injectable bone immunomodulatory hydrogel scaffold. Extensive in vitro and in vivo data showed that this bone immunomodulatory scaffold forms an anti-inflammatory microenvironment by decreasing M1 polarization, while elevating the M2 polarization. Synergistic effects on angiogenesis and anti-osteoclastic differentiation were observed. These findings further proved that administering quercetin SLNs encapsulated in a hydrogel can aid bone defect reconstruction in rats, providing new insights for large-scale bone defect repair.

Tungsten-Modulated Molybdenum Selenide/Graphene Heterostructure as an Advanced Electrode for All-Solid-State Supercapacitors.

Project description:Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted widespread attention due to their excellent electrochemical and catalytic properties. In this work, a tungsten (W)-modulated molybdenum selenide (MoSe2)/graphene heterostructure was investigated for application in electrochemistry. MoSe2/graphene heterojunctions with low-doped W compositions were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal catalysis approach. Based on the conducted density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it was determined that inserting a small amount of W (≈5%) into the MoSe2/graphene heterostructure resulted in the modification of its lattice structure. Additionally, an increase in the distance between layers (≈8%) and a decrease in the adsorption energy of the potassium ions (K+) (≈-1.08 eV) were observed following W doping. Overall, the electrochemical performance of the MoSe2/graphene hybrid was enhanced by the presence of W. An all-solid-state supercapacitor device prepared using electrodes based on the W-doped MoSe2/graphene composite achieved excellent capacitance of 444.4 mF cm-2 at 1 mV s-1. The results obtained herein revealed that the MoSe2/graphene hybrid exhibiting low W composition could be valuable in the field of energy storage and isoelectronic doping of TMDs.

Transforming lignin into porous graphene <i>via</i> direct laser writing for solid-state supercapacitors.

Project description:Cost-effective valorization of lignin into carbon-based electrode materials remains a challenge. Here we reported a facile and ultrafast laser writing technique to convert lignin into porous graphene as active electrode material for solid-state supercapacitors (SCs). During laser writing, alkaline lignin experienced graphitization. By controlling laser parameters such as power the porous structure and graphitization degree can be well modulated. Graphene obtained at 80% of laser power setting (LIG-80) had higher graphene quality and more porous structure than that obtained at the lower power levels (i.e., 50%, 70%). TEM images revealed that LIG-80 had few-layer graphene structure with fringe-like patterns. LIG-80 proved to be an active electrode material for SCs with a specific capacitance as high as 25.44 mF cm-2 in a H2SO4/PVA gel electrolyte, which is comparable or even superior to SCs based on pristine LIG obtained from other carbon precursors. Taken together, our proposed technical route for lignin-based LIG and subsequent application in SCs would not only open a new avenue to lignin valorization, but also produce porous graphene from a renewable carbon precursor for energy storage applications.

Vertically Oriented and Interpenetrating CuSe Nanosheet Films with Open Channels for Flexible All-Solid-State Supercapacitors.

Project description:As a p-type multifunctional semiconductor, CuSe nanostructures show great promise in optoelectronic, sensing, and photocatalytic fields. Although great progress has been achieved, controllable synthesis of CuSe nanosheets (NSs) with a desirable spacial orientation and open frameworks remains a challenge, and their use in supercapacitors (SCs) has not been explored. Herein, a highly vertically oriented and interpenetrating CuSe NS film with open channels is deposited on an Au-coated polyethylene terephthalate substrate. Such CuSe NS films exhibit high specific capacitance (209 F g-1) and can be used as a carbon black- and binder-free electrode to construct flexible, symmetric all-solid-state SCs, using polyvinyl alcohol-LiCl gel as the solid electrolyte. A device fabricated with such CuSe NS films exhibits high volumetric specific capacitance (30.17 mF cm-3), good cycling stability, excellent flexibility, and desirable mechanical stability. The excellent performance of such devices results from the vertically oriented and interpenetrating configuration of CuSe NS building blocks, which can increase the available surface and facilitate the diffusion of electrolyte ions. Moreover, as a prototype for application, three such solid devices in series can be used to light up a red light-emitting diode.

Electronically decoupled stacking fault tetrahedra embedded in Au(111) films.

Project description:Stacking faults are known as defective structures in crystalline materials that typically lower the structural quality of the material. Here, we show that a particular type of defect, that is, stacking fault tetrahedra (SFTs), exhibits pronounced quantized electronic behaviour, revealing a potential synthetic route to decoupled nanoparticles in metal films. We report on the electronic properties of SFTs that exist in Au(111) films, as evidenced by scanning tunnelling microscopy and confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. We find that the SFTs reveal a remarkable decoupling from their metal surroundings, leading to pronounced energy level quantization effects within the SFTs. The electronic behaviour of the SFTs can be described well by the particle-in-a-box model. Our findings demonstrate that controlled preparation of SFTs may offer an alternative way to achieve well-decoupled nanoparticles of high crystalline quality in metal thin films without the need of thin insulating layers.

Free-Standing PVDF/Reduced Graphene Oxide Film for All-Solid-State Flexible Supercapacitors towards Self-Powered Systems.

Project description:The development of polymer-based devices has attracted much attention due to their miniaturization, flexibility, lightweight and sustainable power sources with high efficiency in the field of wearable/portable electronics, and energy system. In this work, we proposed a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based composite matrix for both energy harvesting and energy storage applications. The physicochemical characterizations, such as X-ray diffraction, laser Raman, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) analyses, were performed for the electrospun PVDF/sodium niobate and PVDF/reduced graphene oxide composite film. The electrospun PVDF/sodium niobate nanofibrous mat has been utilized for the energy harvester which shows an open circuit voltage of 40 V (peak to peak) at an applied compressive force of 40 N. The PVDF/reduced graphene oxide composite film acts as the electrode for the symmetric supercapacitor (SSC) device fabrication and investigated for their supercapacitive properties. Finally, the self-charging system has been assembled using PVDF/sodium niobate (energy harvester), and PVDF/reduced graphene oxide SSC (energy storage) and the self-charging capability is investigated. The proposed self-charging system can create a pathway for the all-polymer based composite high-performance self-charging system.

Fabrication of Solid-State Asymmetric Supercapacitors Based on Aniline Oligomers and Graphene Electrodes with Enhanced Electrochemical Performances.

Project description:This work describes solid-state asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs), composed of aniline oligomers as a cathode, nonoxidative graphene sheet as an anode, and polyvinyl alcohol-potassium hydroxide gel as an electrolyte. The synergistic effects resulting from the combination of aniline oligomer and graphene sheet have greatly enhanced the electrical and electrochemical performance of ASCs. The electrical and electrochemical properties of ASCs were highly dependent on the protonation levels of aniline oligomers including aniline tetramer, aniline trimer, and aniline dimer. The aniline tetramer with an appropriate chain length provided higher carrier transport within the anode compared to that of the aniline dimer and trimer. The water-dispersible graphene (WDG) sheets greatly enhanced structural stability and cycle life of aniline tetramers by alleviating swelling, chain scission, and shrinking of the aniline tetramers. The ASC composed of aniline tetramer/WDG sheet exhibited high areal capacitance (62.2 mF/cm2), volumetric capacitance (207.4 F/cm3), and good cycling stability (97.2% after 2000 cycles and 90.4% after 10 000 cycles). The strategy presented in this work is simple and facile, which would give an insight into efficient ways for applying aniline tetramers and graphene sheet for state-of-art electronic applications.

A Highly Elastic and Fatigue-Resistant Natural Protein-Reinforced Hydrogel Electrolyte for Reversible-Compressible Quasi-Solid-State Supercapacitors.

Project description:Compressible solid-state supercapacitors are emerging as promising power sources for next-generation flexible electronics with enhanced safety and mechanical integrity. Highly elastic and compressible solid electrolytes are in great demand to achieve reversible compressibility and excellent capacitive stability of these supercapacitor devices. Here, a lithium ion-conducting hydrogel electrolyte by integrating natural protein nanoparticles into polyacrylamide network is reported. Due to the synergistic effect of natural protein nanoparticles and polyacrylamide chains, the obtained hydrogel shows remarkable elasticity, high compressibility, and fatigue resistance properties. More significantly, the supercapacitor device based on this hydrogel electrolyte exhibits reversible compressibility under multiple cyclic compressions, working well under 80% strain for 1000 compression cycles without sacrificing its capacitive performance. This work offers a promising approach for compressible supercapacitors.

High-Performance Flexible All-Solid-State Supercapacitor from Large Free-Standing Graphene-PEDOT/PSS Films.

Project description:Although great attention has been paid to wearable electronic devices in recent years, flexible lightweight batteries or supercapacitors with high performance are still not readily available due to the limitations of the flexible electrode inventory. In this work, highly flexible, bendable and conductive rGO-PEDOT/PSS films were prepared using a simple bar-coating method. The assembled device using rGO-PEDOT/PSS electrode could be bent and rolled up without any decrease in electrochemical performance. A relatively high areal capacitance of 448 mF cm(-2) was achieved at a scan rate of 10 mV s(-1) using the composite electrode with a high mass loading (8.49 mg cm(-2)), indicating the potential to be used in practical applications. To demonstrate this applicability, a roll-up supercapacitor device was constructed, which illustrated the operation of a green LED light for 20 seconds when fully charged.
