Colossal negative thermal expansion in reduced layered ruthenate.

ABSTRACT: Large negative thermal expansion (NTE) has been discovered during the last decade in materials of various kinds, particularly materials associated with a magnetic, ferroelectric or charge-transfer phase transition. Such NTE materials have attracted considerable attention for use as thermal-expansion compensators. Here, we report the discovery of giant NTE for reduced layered ruthenate. The total volume change related to NTE reaches 6.7% in dilatometry, a value twice as large as the largest volume change reported to date. We observed a giant negative coefficient of linear thermal expansion α=-115 × 10^-6 K^-1 over 200 K interval below 345 K. This dilatometric NTE is too large to be attributable to the crystallographic unit-cell volume variation with temperature. The highly anisotropic thermal expansion of the crystal grains might underlie giant bulk NTE via microstructural effects consuming open spaces in the sintered body on heating.

Colossal negative thermal expansion in BiNiO3 induced by intermetallic charge transfer.

Project description:The unusual property of negative thermal expansion is of fundamental interest and may be used to fabricate composites with zero or other controlled thermal expansion values. Here we report that colossal negative thermal expansion (defined as linear expansion <-10(-4) K(-1) over a temperature range ~100 K) is accessible in perovskite oxides showing charge-transfer transitions. BiNiO(3) shows a 2.6% volume reduction under pressure due to a Bi/Ni charge transfer that is shifted to ambient pressure through lanthanum substitution for Bi. Changing proportions of coexisting low- and high-temperature phases leads to smooth volume shrinkage on heating. The crystallographic linear expansion coefficient for Bi(0.95)La(0.05)NiO(3) is -137×10(-6) K(-1) and a value of -82×10(-6) K(-1) is observed between 320 and 380 K from a dilatometric measurement on a ceramic pellet. Colossal negative thermal expansion materials operating at ambient conditions may also be accessible through metal-insulator transitions driven by other phenomena such as ferroelectric orders.

Abrupt change from moderate positive to colossal negative thermal expansion caused by imidazolate composite formation.

Project description:This work describes temperature-induced crystallization processes and reaction mechanisms occurring in the borohydride-imidazolate system. In the course of thermal evolution, crystal structures of two novel bimetallic imidazolates AMnIm3 (A = Na, K) were solved using synchrotron radiation powder diffraction data. Both the alkali metal cation and the Mn cations exhibit distorted octahedral coordination while each imidazolate is surrounded by two alkali metal and two manganese atoms. Extensive study of the thermal expansion behaviour revealed that the expansion of the bimetallic imidazolates does not proceed uniformly over the entire temperature range but rather abruptly changes from a colossal negative to a moderate positive volume expansion. Such behaviour is caused by the coherent intergrowth of the coexisting phases which form a composite, a positive lattice mismatch and a tensile strain during the coexistence of NaMIm3 (M = Mg and Mn) and NaIm or HT-NaIm. Such coherent coalescence of two materials opens the possibility for targeted design of zero thermal expansion materials.Graphical abstractCrystal structures of AMnIm3 (A = Na, K) were determined. Spin crossover-induced colossal positive and negative thermal expansion in a nanoporous coordination framework material.

Project description:External control over the mechanical function of materials is paramount in the development of nanoscale machines. Yet, exploiting changes in atomic behaviour to produce controlled scalable motion is a formidable challenge. Here, we present an ultra-flexible coordination framework material in which a cooperative electronic transition induces an extreme abrupt change in the crystal lattice conformation. This arises due to a change in the preferred coordination character of Fe(II) sites at different spin states, generating scissor-type flexing of the crystal lattice. Diluting the framework with transition-inactive Ni(II) sites disrupts long-range communication of spin state through the lattice, producing a more gradual transition and continuous lattice movement, thus generating colossal positive and negative linear thermal expansion behaviour, with coefficients of thermal expansion an order of magnitude greater than previously reported. This study has wider implications in the development of advanced responsive structures, demonstrating electronic control over mechanical motion.

Anomalous and colossal thermal expansion, photoluminescence, and dielectric properties in lead halide-layered perovskites with cyclohexylammonium and cyclopentylammonium cations.

Project description:A detailed study of lead halide-layered perovskites with general formula A2PbX4 (where A is cyclohexylammonium (CHA) or cyclopentylammonium (CPA) cation and X is Cl- or Br- anion) is presented. Using variable temperature synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, we observe that these compounds exhibit diverse crystal structures above room temperature. Very interestingly, we report some unconventional thermomechanical responses such as uniaxial negative thermal expansion and colossal positive thermal expansion in a perpendicular direction. For the polymorphs of (CHA)2PbBr4, the volumetric thermal expansion coefficient is among the highest reported for any extended inorganic crystalline solid, reaching 480 MK-1. The phase transitions are confirmed by calorimetry and dielectric measurements, where the dielectric versus temperature curves show anomalies related with the order-disorder phase transitions. In addition, these compounds exhibit a broad photoluminescence (PL) emission with a large Stokes shift, which is related with an exciton PL emission.

Control of Uniaxial Negative Thermal Expansion in Layered Perovskites by Tuning Layer Thickness.

Project description:Uniaxial negative thermal expansion (NTE) is known to occur in low n members of the A n+1B n O3n+1 Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) layered perovskite series with a frozen rotation of BO6 octahedra about the layering axis. Previous work has shown that this NTE arises due to the combined effects of a close proximity to a transition to a competing phase, so called "symmetry trapping", and highly anisotropic elastic compliance specific to the symmetry of the NTE phase. We extend this analysis to the broader RP family (n = 1, 2, 3, 4, …, ∞), demonstrating that by changing the fraction of layer interface in the structure (i.e., the value of 1/n) one may control the anisotropic compliance that is necessary for the pronounced uniaxial NTE observed in these systems. More detailed analysis of how the components of the compliance matrix develop with 1/n allows us to identify different regimes, linking enhancements in compliance between these regimes to the crystallographic degrees of freedom in the structure. We further discuss how the perovskite layer thickness affects the frequencies of soft zone boundary modes with large negative Grüneisen parameters, associated with the aforementioned phase transition, that constitute the thermodynamic driving force for NTE. This new insight complements our previous work-showing that chemical control may be used to switch from positive to negative thermal expansion in these systems-since it makes the layer thickness, n, an additional design parameter that may be used to engineer layered perovskites with tuneable thermal expansion. In these respects, we predict that, with appropriate chemical substitution, the n = 1 phase will be the system in which the most pronounced NTE could be achieved.

Reduced thermal expansion by surface-mounted nanoparticles in a pillared-layered metal-organic framework.

Project description:Control of thermal expansion (TE) is important to improve material longevity in applications with repeated temperature changes or fluctuations. The TE behavior of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is increasingly well understood, while the impact of surface-mounted nanoparticles (NPs) on the TE properties of MOFs remains unexplored despite large promises of NP@MOF composites in catalysis and adsorbate diffusion control. Here we study the influence of surface-mounted platinum nanoparticles on the TE properties of Pt@MOF (Pt@Zn2(DP-bdc)2dabco; DP-bdc2-=2,5-dipropoxy-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate, dabco=1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane). We show that TE is largely retained at low platinum loadings, while high loading results in significantly reduced TE at higher temperatures compared to the pure MOF. These findings support the chemical intuition that surface-mounted particles restrict deformation of the MOF support and suggest that composite materials exhibit superior TE properties thereby excluding thermal stress as limiting factor for their potential application in temperature swing processes or catalysis.

Experimental and theoretical evidence of a supercritical-like transition in an organic semiconductor presenting colossal uniaxial negative thermal expansion.

Project description:Thermal expansion coefficients of most materials are usually small, typically up to 50 parts per million per kelvin, and positive, i.e. materials expand when heated. Some materials show an atypical shrinking behavior in one or more crystallographic directions when heated. Here we show that a high mobility thiophene-based organic semiconductor, BHH-BTBT, has an exceptionally large negative expansion between 95 and 295 K (-216 < α2 = αb < -333 MK-1), being compensated by an even larger positive expansion in the perpendicular direction (287 < α1 < 634 MK-1). It is shown that these anomalous expansivities are completely absent in C8-BTBT, a much studied organic semiconductor with a closely related molecular formula and 3D crystallographic structure. Complete theoretical characterization of BHH-BTBT using ab initio molecular dynamics shows that below ∼200 K two different α and β domains exist of which one is dominant but which dynamically exchange around and above 210 K. A supercritical-like transition from an α dominated phase to a β dominated phase is observed using DSC measurements, UV-VIS spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The origin of the extreme negative and positive thermal expansion is related to steric hindrance between adjacent tilted thiophene units and strongly enhanced by attractive S···S and S···C interactions within the highly anharmonic mixed-domain phase. This material could trigger the tailoring of optoelectronic devices highly sensitive to strain and temperature.

Colossal negative thermal expansion in a cucurbit[8]uril-enabled uranyl-organic polythreading framework <i>via</i> thermally induced relaxation.

Project description:It is an ongoing goal to achieve the effective regulation of the thermal expansion properties of materials. In this work, we propose a method for incorporating host-guest complexation into a framework structure and construct a flexible cucurbit[8]uril uranyl-organic polythreading framework, U3(bcbpy)3(CB8). U3(bcbpy)3(CB8) can undergo huge negative thermal expansion (NTE) and has a large volumetric coefficient of -962.9 × 10-6 K-1 within the temperature range of 260 K to 300 K. Crystallographic snapshots of the polythreading framework at various temperatures reveal that, different from the intrinsic transverse vibrations of the subunits of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that experience NTE via a well-known hinging model, the remarkable NTE effect observed here is the result of a newly-proposed thermally induced relaxation process. During this process, an extreme spring-like contraction of the flexible CB8-based pseudorotaxane units, with an onset temperature of ∼260 K, follows a period of cumulative expansion. More interestingly, compared with MOFs that commonly have relatively strong coordination bonds, due to the difference in the structural flexibility and adaptivity of the weakly bonded U3(bcbpy)3(CB8) polythreading framework, U3(bcbpy)3(CB8) shows unique time-dependent structural dynamics related to the relaxation process, the first time this has been reported in NTE materials. This work provides a feasible pathway for exploring new NTE mechanisms by using tailored supramolecular host-guest complexes with high structural flexibility and has promise for the design of new kinds of functional metal-organic materials with controllable thermal responsive behaviour.

Orbital ordering and magnetism in layered Perovskite Ruthenate Sr2RuO4.

Project description:Local density approximation plus on-site Coulomb interaction U electronic structure calculations reveal that layered perovskite oxide Sr2RuO4 exhibits the ferromagnetic (FM) half-metallic ground state, which is nearly degenerate with the antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase with a slightly higher total energy. The nearly degenerate FM/AFM total energies provide a reasonable explanation for the experimentally observed spin-fluctuation. In addition, a dumbbell-shape 4d - t2g recombined dxz?-?dyz orbital ordering on the Ru sublattice is obtained owing to the on-site Coulomb interaction U associated with the elongated RuO6 octahedron local structure. The discovered orbital ordering is robust against the spin-orbit interaction as well as the surface terminations. Our findings unravel the on-site Coulomb correlation as the driving force of the Ru-4d orbital ordering as well as the inherent magnetic degeneracy.

Negative Thermal Expansion in Ba0.5Sr0.5Zn₂SiGeO₇.

Project description:Solid solutions with the composition Ba0.5Sr0.5Zn₂Si2-xGexO₇ and BaZn₂Si2-xGexO₇ were prepared with different values of x using a conventional mixed oxide route. Both compounds exhibit very different thermal expansion, which is due to the different crystal structures. Ba0.5Sr0.5Zn₂Si2-xGexO₇ solid solutions exhibit the structure of high-temperature BaZn₂Si₂O₇ and show negative thermal expansion, which was proven via high-temperature X-ray diffraction. Up to around x = 1, the crystal structure remains the same. Above this value, the low-temperature phase becomes stable. The Sr-free solid solutions have the crystal structure of low-temperature BaZn₂Si₂O₇ and show also a limited solubility of Ge. These Sr-free compositions show transitions of low- to high-temperature phases, which are shifted to higher temperatures with increasing Ge-concentration.
