Descriptions of three new carbonaria-group species of Fannia Robineau-Desvoidy from China, with a key to the carbonaria-group species (Diptera, Fanniidae).

ABSTRACT: A historical review of the Fannia carbonaria-group is provided and three new species are described from China: Fannia fani Wang & Wu, sp. n., Fannia nitidiventris Wang & Zhang, sp. n. and Fannia submaculata Wang & Zhao, sp. n.. One species, Fannia norvegica Ringdahl, 1934, is recorded for the first time from China. Illustrations of male terminalia of these four species and a taxonomic key to the males of known species in the group are given. The Fannia carbonaria-group now includes 30 species distributed in the Holarctic Region and northern part of the Oriental Region.

Project description:The Chinese fauna of the Fannia postica-group Chillcott (1961) is reviewed, the diagnostic features of this group are redefined, one new species, Fannia nudifemoratasp. n., is described, and a key to the males of nine known species is given. One new junior synonym, Fannia tigripeda Xue, Wang&Li, syn. n. for Fannia stigi Rognes is established. To facilitate comparisons of the species, Fannia aethiops Malloch, Fannia ardua Nishida, Fannia discoculea Xue, Fannia ringdahlana Collin, Fannia postica (Stein), Fannia spathiophora Malloch, and Fannia stigi Rognes are redescribed and illustrated. The geographic distribution of the known Chinese species is updated.

Project description:A total of 17 species of the Fannia postica-group Chillcott, 1961 from the Palearctic and Oriental regions are reviewed herein, 2 of which are described from China as new: Fannia ningxiaensis Wang & Zhang, sp. n. and Fannia subaethiops Wang & Zhu, sp. n.. Fannia labidocerca Feng & Xue, 2006, originally placed in Fannia serena-group Chillcott, 1961, is moved to the postica-group and re-described. An identification key to the males of known species from these regions is provided.

The detailed description, photographs and drawings of adults and male terminalia of F.menglaensis sp. nov. are provided. All specimens are preserved in the Museum of Beijing Forestry University.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Fannia canicularis (Diptera: Fanniidae).

Project description:Fannia canicularis (Linnaeus, 1761) is a species from the family Fanniidae. In this study, we sequenced and analyzed the complete mitochondrial genome of F. canicularis for the first time. The circular mitogenome is 15,826 bp in length, and includes 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and a non-coding control region. The family Fanniidae formed a monophyletic clade in the phylogenetic tree based on 13 concatenated PCGs, sister to three other families in Diptera.

Project description:BackgroundIridescent blue-green colours are exhibited by various organisms including several taxa in the Tachinidae (Diptera) with notable examples within the Afrotropical members of the genus Phorinia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830. The vivid colouration observed in life quickly fades to a dull golden-yellow when a specimen is dried. Although well known, no published explanation has been given for this phenomenon.New informationWe illustrate the mechanism associated with this colour change. We also test and propose technical alternatives to retain the living colours in dried specimens.

Review of the Nordic Gymnocheta Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera, Tachinidae) with report of two species new to Europe.

Project description:The genus Gymnocheta Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 (Diptera, Tachinidae) has until now been represented by two species in Europe, G.viridis (Fallén, 1810) and G.magna Zimin, 1958. Two species are newly recorded from Finland and Sweden, Gymnochetalucida Zimin, 1958 and G.zhelochovtsevi Zimin, 1958, both previously known only from the Russian Far East and Japan. These four European species are redescribed and illustrated, including the first description of the female of G.zhelochovtsevi. A key is provided to seven of the eight described species of Palaearctic Gymnocheta. The holotype of G.viridis was examined and found to differ from the present concept of the species, instead matching the concept of the more recently described G.magna. In the interests of nomenclatural stability, the two names are maintained in their current usage pending a request to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature to replace the current holotype of G.viridis with a neotype that corresponds to the long-established concept of that species.

Project description:BackgroundWe describe nine new species in the genus Uramya Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 from Area de Conservación Guanacaste (ACG) in northwestern Costa Rica. All species were reared from an ongoing inventory of wild-caught caterpillars spanning a variety of families (Lepidoptera: Erebidae; Limacodidae; Megalopygidae; Lasiocampidae and Dalceridae). Our study provides a concise description of each new species using morphology, life history, molecular data, and photographic documentation. In addition to the new species the authors provide a redescription the previously described Uramya sibinivora Guimarães, which was also collected within ACG during this study. We also provide a redescription of the genus, and a revised key to species of Uramya occurring in Central and South America.New informationThe following nine new species of Uramya, all authored by Fleming & Wood, are described: Uramya albosetulosa Fleming & Wood sp. nov., Uramya constricta Fleming & Wood sp. nov., Uramya contraria Fleming & Wood sp. nov., Uramya infracta Fleming & Wood sp. nov., Uramya lativittata Fleming & Wood sp. nov., Uramya lunula Fleming & Wood sp. nov., Uramya nitida Fleming & Wood sp. nov., Uramya pannosa Fleming & Wood sp. nov., and Uramya penicillata Fleming & Wood sp. nov. The following are proposed by Wood as new synonyms of Uramya: Olinda Townsend, syn. nov. and Procleonice Townsend, syn. nov. The following new combination is proposed as a result of the new synonymies: Uramya brasiliensis Macquart, comb. nov.Procleonice prolixa Townsend is synonymized under Uramya brevicauda Curran, syn. nov.
