From time-resolved atomic-scale imaging of individual donors to their cooperative dynamics.

ABSTRACT: The key elements in the steady miniaturization process of cutting-edge semiconductor devices are the understanding and controlling of charge dynamics on the atomic scale. In detail, we address the study of charging processes of individual doping atoms and, especially, the interaction of those atoms with their surroundings. We use pulsed optical excitation in combination with scanning tunneling microscopy at the n-doped gallium arsenide [GaAs(110)] surface to investigate single donor dynamics within a nanoscaled, localized space charge region. Tuning the tunnel rate can drive the system into nonequilibrium conditions, allowing distinction between the decay of optically induced free charge carriers and the decay of donor charge states. The latter process is atomically resolved and discussed with respect to donor-level binding energies and local donor configurations.

Atomic-Scale Time-Resolved Imaging of Krypton Dimers, Chains and Transition to a One-Dimensional Gas.

Project description:Single-atom dynamics of noble-gas elements have been investigated using time-resolved transmission electron microscopy (TEM), with direct observation providing for a deeper understanding of chemical bonding, reactivity, and states of matter at the nanoscale. We report on a nanoscale system consisting of endohedral fullerenes encapsulated within single-walled carbon nanotubes ((Kr@C60)@SWCNT), capable of the delivery and release of krypton atoms on-demand, via coalescence of host fullerene cages under the action of the electron beam (in situ) or heat (ex situ). The state and dynamics of Kr atoms were investigated by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Kr atom positions were measured precisely using aberration-corrected high-resolution TEM (AC-HRTEM), aberration-corrected scanning TEM (AC-STEM), and single-atom spectroscopic imaging (STEM-EELS). The electron beam drove the formation of 2Kr@C120 capsules, in which van der Waals Kr2 and transient covalent [Kr2]+ bonding states were identified. Thermal coalescence led to the formation of longer coalesced nested nanotubes containing more loosely bound Krn chains (n = 3-6). In some instances, delocalization of Kr atomic positions was confirmed by STEM analysis as the transition to a one-dimensional (1D) gas, as Kr atoms were constrained to only one degree of translational freedom within long, well-annealed, nested nanotubes. Such nested nanotube structures were investigated by Raman spectroscopy. This material represents a highly compressed and dimensionally constrained 1D gas stable under ambient conditions. Direct atomic-scale imaging has revealed elusive bonding states and a previously unseen 1D gaseous state of matter of this noble gas element, demonstrating TEM to be a powerful tool in the discovery of chemistry at the single-atom level.

Atomic-scale 3D imaging of individual dopant atoms in an oxide semiconductor.

Project description:The physical properties of semiconductors are controlled by chemical doping. In oxide semiconductors, small variations in the density of dopant atoms can completely change the local electric and magnetic responses caused by their strongly correlated electrons. In lightly doped systems, however, such variations are difficult to determine as quantitative 3D imaging of individual dopant atoms is a major challenge. We apply atom probe tomography to resolve the atomic sites that donors occupy in the small band gap semiconductor Er(Mn,Ti)O3 with a nominal Ti concentration of 0.04 at. %, map their 3D lattice positions, and quantify spatial variations. Our work enables atomic-level 3D studies of structure-property relations in lightly doped complex oxides, which is crucial to understand and control emergent dopant-driven quantum phenomena.

Imaging Atomic Scale Dynamics on III-V Nanowire Surfaces During Electrical Operation.

Project description:As semiconductor electronics keep shrinking, functionality depends on individual atomic scale surface and interface features that may change as voltages are applied. In this work we demonstrate a novel device platform that allows scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) imaging with atomic scale resolution across a device simultaneously with full electrical operation. The platform presents a significant step forward as it allows STM to be performed everywhere on the device surface and high temperature processing in reactive gases of the complete device. We demonstrate the new method through proof of principle measurements on both InAs and GaAs nanowire devices with variable biases up to 4 V. On InAs nanowires we observe a surprising removal of atomic defects and smoothing of the surface morphology under applied bias, in contrast to the expected increase in defects and electromigration-related failure. As we use only standard fabrication and scanning instrumentation our concept is widely applicable and opens up the possibility of fundamental investigations of device surface reliability as well as new electronic functionality based on restructuring during operation.

Atomic-scale diffractive imaging of sub-cycle electron dynamics in condensed matter.

Project description:For interaction of light with condensed-matter systems, we show with simulations that ultrafast electron and X-ray diffraction can provide a time-dependent record of charge-density maps with sub-cycle and atomic-scale resolutions. Using graphene as an example material, we predict that diffraction can reveal localised atomic-scale origins of optical and electronic phenomena. In particular, we point out nontrivial relations between microscopic electric current and density in undoped graphene.

Time-resolved imaging of nonlinear magnetic domain-wall dynamics in ferromagnetic nanowires

Project description:In ferromagnetic nanostructures domain walls as emergent entities separate uniformly magnetized regions. They are describable as quasi particles and can be controlled by magnetic fields or spin-polarized currents. Below critical driving forces domain walls are rigid conserving their spin structure. Like other quasi particles internal excitations influence the domain wall dynamics above a critical velocity known as the Walker breakdown. This complex nonlinear motion has not been observed directly. Here we present direct time-resolved x-ray microscopy of structural transformations of domain walls during motion. Although governed by nonlinear dynamics the displacement of the wall on the observed time scale can still be described by an analytical model. Using a reduced dynamical domain-wall width the model enables us to determine the mass of a vortex wall experimentally. Further we observe the creation and the mutual annihilation of domain walls. The intrinsic nanometer length and nanosecond time-scales are determined directly.

Direct Observation of the Dynamics of Ylide Solvation by Hydrogen-bond Donors Using Time-Resolved Infrared Spectroscopy.

Project description:The photoexcitation of α-diazocarbonyl compounds produces singlet carbene intermediates that react with nucleophilic solvent molecules to form ylides. The zwitterionic nature of these newly formed ylides induces rapid changes in their interactions with the surrounding solvent. Here, ultrafast time-resolved infrared absorption spectroscopy is used to study the ylide-forming reactions of singlet carbene intermediates from the 270 nm photoexcitation of ethyl diazoacetate in various solvents and the changes in the subsequent ylide-solvent interactions. The results provide direct spectroscopic observation of the competition between ylide formation and C-H insertion in reactions of the singlet carbene with nucleophilic solvent molecules. We further report the specific solvation dynamics of the tetrahydrofuran (THF)-derived ylide (with a characteristic IR absorption band at 1636 cm-1) by various hydrogen-bond donors and the coordination by lithium cations. Hydrogen-bonded ylide bands shift to a lower wavenumber by -19 cm-1 for interactions with ethanol, -14 cm-1 for chloroform, -10 cm-1 for dichloromethane, -9 cm-1 for acetonitrile or cyclohexane, and -16 cm-1 for Li+ coordination, allowing the time evolution of the ylide-solvent interactions to be tracked. The hydrogen-bonded ylide bands grow with rate coefficients that are close to the diffusional limit. We further characterize the specific interactions of ethanol with the THF-derived ylide using quantum chemical (MP2) calculations and DFT-based atom-centered density matrix propagation trajectories, which show preferential coordination to the α-carbonyl group. This coordination alters the hybridization character of the ylidic carbon atom, with the greatest change toward sp2 character found for lithium-ion coordination.

Quantification of Biomolecular Dynamics Inside Real and Synthetic Nuclear Pore Complexes Using Time-Resolved Atomic Force Microscopy.

Project description:Over the past decades, atomic force microscopy (AFM) has emerged as an increasingly powerful tool to study the dynamics of biomolecules at nanometer length scales. However, the more stochastic the nature of such biomolecular dynamics, the harder it becomes to distinguish them from AFM measurement noise. Rapid, stochastic dynamics are inherent to biological systems comprising intrinsically disordered proteins. One role of such proteins is in the formation of the transport barrier of the nuclear pore complex (NPC): the selective gateway for macromolecular traffic entering or exiting the nucleus. Here, we use AFM to observe the dynamics of intrinsically disordered proteins from two systems: the transport barrier of native NPCs and the transport barrier of a mimetic NPC made using a DNA origami scaffold. Analyzing data recorded with 50-200 ms temporal resolution, we highlight the importance of drift correction and appropriate baseline measurements in such experiments. In addition, we describe an autocorrelation analysis to quantify time scales of observed dynamics and to assess their veracity-an analysis protocol that lends itself to the quantification of stochastic fluctuations in other biomolecular systems. The results reveal the surprisingly slow rate of stochastic, collective transitions inside mimetic NPCs, highlighting the importance of FG-nup cohesive interactions.

Echo planar time-resolved imaging (EPTI).

Project description:PURPOSE:To develop an efficient distortion- and blurring-free multi-shot EPI technique for time-resolved multiple-contrast and/or quantitative imaging. METHODS:EPI is a commonly used sequence but suffers from geometric distortions and blurring. Here, we introduce a new multi-shot EPI technique termed echo planar time-resolved imaging (EPTI), which has the ability to rapidly acquire distortion- and blurring-free multi-contrast data set. The EPTI approach performs encoding in ky -t space and uses a new highly accelerated spatio-temporal CAIPI sampling trajectory to take advantage of signal correlation along these dimensions. Through this acquisition and a B0 -informed parallel imaging reconstruction, hundreds of "time-resolved" distortion- and blurring-free images at different TEs across the EPI readout window can be created at sub-millisecond temporal increments using a small number of EPTI shots. Moreover, a method for self-estimation and correction of shot-to-shot B0 variations was developed. Simultaneous multi-slice acquisition was also incorporated to further improve the acquisition efficiency. RESULTS:We evaluated EPTI under varying simulated acceleration factors, B0 -inhomogeneity, and shot-to-shot B0 variations to demonstrate its ability to provide distortion- and blurring-free images at multiple TEs. Two variants of EPTI were demonstrated in vivo at 3T: (1) a combined gradient- and spin-echo EPTI for quantitative mapping of T2 , T2 * , proton density, and susceptibility at 1.1 × 1.1 × 3 mm3 whole-brain in 28 s (0.8 s/slice), and (2) a gradient-echo EPTI, for multi-echo and quantitative T2 * fMRI at 2 × 2 × 3 mm3 whole-brain at a 3.3 s temporal resolution. CONCLUSION:EPTI is a new approach for multi-contrast and/or quantitative imaging that can provide fast acquisition of distortion- and blurring-free images at multiple TEs.

Allosteric action in real time: time-resolved crystallographic studies of a cooperative dimeric hemoglobin.

Project description:Protein allostery provides mechanisms for regulation of biological function at the molecular level. We present here an investigation of global, ligand-induced allosteric transition in a protein by time-resolved x-ray diffraction. The study provides a view of structural changes in single crystals of Scapharca dimeric hemoglobin as they proceed in real time, from 5 ns to 80 micros after ligand photodissociation. A tertiary intermediate structure forms rapidly (<5 ns) as the protein responds to the presence of an unliganded heme within each R-state protein subunit, with key structural changes observed in the heme groups, neighboring residues, and interface water molecules. This intermediate lays a foundation for the concerted tertiary and quaternary structural changes that occur on a microsecond time scale and are associated with the transition to a low-affinity T-state structure. Reversal of these changes shows a considerable lag as a T-like structure persists well after ligand rebinding, suggesting a slow T-to-R transition.

Atomic-Scale Dynamics Probed by Photon Correlations.

Project description:Light absorption and emission have their origins in fast atomic-scale phenomena. To characterize these basic steps (e.g., in photosynthesis, luminescence, and quantum optics), it is necessary to access picosecond temporal and picometer spatial scales simultaneously. In this Perspective, we describe how state-of-the-art picosecond photon correlation spectroscopy combined with luminescence induced at the atomic scale with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) enables such studies. We outline recent STM-induced luminescence work on single-photon emitters and the dynamics of excitons, charges, molecules, and atoms as well as several prospective experiments concerning light-matter interactions at the nanoscale. We also describe future strategies for measuring and rationalizing ultrafast phenomena at the nanoscale.
