ABSTRACT: Amorphous-like Ni-Fe-S ultrathin nanosheets by oxygen incorporation and electrochemical tuning show excellent OER activity at high current densities. Such excellent performance could be attributed to the unique 3D porous configuration composed of amorphous-like ultrathin nanosheets with much more active sites and improved conductivity, as well as the proper electronic structure benefiting from the oxygen incorporation and electrochemical tuning.

Advanced Ultrathin RuPdM (M = Ni, Co, Fe) Nanosheets Electrocatalyst Boosts Hydrogen Evolution.

Project description:The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one of the most significant reactions in the electrolysis water process, and electrocatalysts which possess high mass activity and excellent stability are the most important driving factors to improve the efficiency of HER. As for the efficient commercially electrocatalyst, Pt/C is limited in development because of its high cost. Therefore, the study of non-Pt high-efficiency catalysts is particularly important at this moment. Here, we creatively report for the first time a kind of RuPdM (M= Ni, Co, Fe) ultrathin nanosheets (NSs), which exhibit extraordinary electrochemical properties for HER under alkaline conditions. The overpotential of optimized trimetallic Ru38Pd34Ni28 ultrathin NSs is only 20 mV (10 mA cm-2), and the mass activity reaches 6.15 A mg-1 noble metal at -0.07 V vs RHE. It can be compared to Pt-based electrocatalysts, which have the highest mass activity currently reported. The durability tests also prove that the stability of the electrocatalyst is outstanding. DFT calculations disclose that the flexible modulation of electronic structures of RuPd ultrathin NSs is achieved by utilizing the additional 3d transition metals Fe, Co, and Ni. In particular, the Ni-3d bands act as the continuous electron-supply center for Ru to ensure an efficient electron transfer toward the adsorbates. Meanwhile, the stable Pd sites are critical for coupling the O-2pπ orbital in the initial H2O splitting with a facile barrier. This work will open up a new era of non-Pt materials for alkaline hydrogen evolution toward practical application.

Highly Active Fe Sites in Ultrathin Pyrrhotite Fe7S8 Nanosheets Realizing Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution.

Project description:Identification of active sites in an electrocatalyst is essential for understanding of the mechanism of electrocatalytic water splitting. To be one of the most active oxygen evolution reaction catalysts in alkaline media, Ni-Fe based compounds have attracted tremendous attention, while the role of Ni and Fe sites played has still come under debate. Herein, by taking the pyrrhotite Fe7S8 nanosheets with mixed-valence states and metallic conductivity for examples, we illustrate that Fe could be a highly active site for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution. It is shown that the delocalized electrons in the ultrathin Fe7S8 nanosheets could facilitate electron transfer processes of the system, where d orbitals of FeII and FeIII would be overlapped with each other during the catalytic reactions, rendering the ultrathin Fe7S8 nanosheets to be the most efficient Fe-based electrocatalyst for water oxidation. As expected, the ultrathin Fe7S8 nanosheets exhibit promising electrocatalytic oxygen evolution activities, with a low overpotential of 0.27 V and a large current density of 300 mA cm-2 at 0.5 V. This work provides solid evidence that Fe could be an efficient active site for electrocatalytic water splitting.

Short-range amorphous carbon nanosheets for oxygen reduction electrocatalysis.

Project description:Selectively creating active sites that can work well in different media as much as possible remains an open challenge for the widespread application of sustainable metal air batteries and fuel cells. Herein, short-range amorphous nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (NCS) coupled with partially graphitized porous carbon architecture were reported, and were prepared via flexible salt-assisted calcination strategy and followed by a simple cleaning process. The short-range amorphous structure not only significantly promotes the exposure of electrochemically active sites of carbon defects with less protonation in acidic medium, but also maintains the structural stability and electron conduction of the NCS. This unique structure endows the NCS (0.832 V) with efficient ORR electrocatalytic performance with a high half-wave potential (E 1/2) comparable to that of commercial Pt/C (0.837 V) in alkaline electrolyte and an impressive E 1/2 of 0.64 V in harsh acidic medium, making it outstanding among the reported analogous metal-free carbon electrocatalysts. In addition, the NCS manifests robust stability for ORR electrocatalysis with little change in the catalytic activity after accelerated stability tests. This work will provide a feasible inspiration to the construction of carbon nanomaterials with high active site density for efficient energy conversion-related electrochemical reactions.

The role of Fe incorporation into Ni-MOF-74 derived oxygen evolution electrocatalysts for anion exchange membrane water electrolysis.

Project description:The performance of Ni-based oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is enhanced upon Fe incorporation into the structure during the synthesis process or electrochemical Fe uptake from the electrolyte. In light of the promising potential of metal-organic framework (MOF) electrocatalysts for water splitting, Ni-MOF-74 is used as a model catalyst to study the effect of Fe incorporation from KOH electrolyte on the electrocatalyst's OER activity and stability. The insights obtained from X-ray diffraction and operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy characterization of Ni-MOF-74 and an amorphous Ni metal organic compound (Ni-MOC*) reveal that Fe uptake enhances OER by two processes: higher Ni oxidation states and enhanced flexibility of both, the electronic state and the local structure, when cycling the potential below and above the OER onset. To demonstrate the impressive OER activity and stability in Fe containing KOH, an Ni-MOC* anode was implemented in an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEM-WE) with 3 ppm Fe containing 1 M KOH electrolyte resulting in an outstanding cell voltage of 1.7 V (at an anode potential of 1.51 V) at 60 °C and 0.5 A cm-2 exceeding 130 h of stable continuous operation.

Ultrathin 2D Cobalt Zeolite-Imidazole Framework Nanosheets for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution.

Project description:2D layered materials, including metal-di-chalcogenides and transition metal layered double hydroxides, among others, are intensively studied because of new properties that emerge from their 2D confinement, which are attractive for advanced applications. Herein, 2D cobalt ion (Co2+) and benzimidazole (bIm) based zeolite-imidazole framework nanosheets, ZIF-9(III), are reported as exceptionally efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Specifically, liquid-phase ultrasonication is applied to exfoliate a [Co4(bIm)16] zeolite-imidazole framework (ZIF), named as ZIF-9(III) phase, into nanoscale sheets. ZIF-9(III) is selectively prepared through simple mechanical grinding of cobalt nitrate and benzimidazole in the presence of a small amount of ethanol. The resultant exfoliated nanosheets exhibit significantly higher OER activity in alkaline conditions than the corresponding bulk phases ZIF-9 and ZIF-9(III). The electrochemical and physicochemical characterization data support the assignment of the OER activity of the exfoliated nanosheet derived material to nitrogen coordinated cobalt oxyhydroxide N4CoOOH sites, following a mechanism known for Co-porphyrin and related systems. Thus, exfoliated 2D nanosheets hold promise as potential alternatives to commercial noble metal electrocatalysts for the OER.

MOF-Derived Ultrathin Cobalt Molybdenum Phosphide Nanosheets for Efficient Electrochemical Overall Water Splitting.

Project description:The development of high-performance and cost-effective earth-abundant transition metal-based electrocatalysts is of major interest for several key energy technologies, including water splitting. Herein, we report the synthesis of ultrathin CoMoP nanosheets through a simple ion etching and phosphorization method. The obtained catalyst exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic activity and stability towards oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER and HER), with overpotentials down to 273 and 89 mV at 10 mA cm-2, respectively. The produced CoMoP nanosheets are also characterized by very small Tafel slopes, 54.9 and 69.7 mV dec-1 for OER and HER, respectively. When used as both cathode and anode electrocatalyst in the overall water splitting reaction, CoMoP-based cells require just 1.56 V to reach 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline media. This outstanding performance is attributed to the proper composition, weak crystallinity and two-dimensional nanosheet structure of the electrocatalyst.

High-Alkaline Water-Splitting Activity of Mesoporous 3D Heterostructures: An Amorphous-Shell@Crystalline-Core Nano-Assembly of Co-Ni-Phosphate Ultrathin-Nanosheets and V- Doped Cobalt-Nitride Nanowires.

Project description:Introducing amorphous and ultrathin nanosheets of transition bimetal phosphate arrays that are highly active in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) as shells over an electronically modulated crystalline core with low hydrogen absorption energy for an excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) can boost the sluggish kinetics of the OER and HER in alkaline electrolytes. Therefore, in this study, ultrathin and amorphous cobalt-nickel-phosphate (CoNiPOx ) nanosheet arrays are deposited over vanadium (V)-doped cobalt-nitride (V3% -Co4 N) crystalline core nanowires to obtain amorphous-shell@crystalline-core mesoporous 3D-heterostructures (CoNiPOx @V-Co4 N/NF) as bifunctional electrocatalysts. The optimized electrocatalyst shows extremely low HER and OER overpotentials of 53 and 270 mV at 10 mA cm-2 , respectively. The CoNiPOx @V3% -Co4 N/NF (+/-) electrolyzer utilizing the electrocatalyst as both anode and cathode demonstrates remarkable overall water-splitting activity, requiring a cell potential of only 1.52 V at 10 mA cm-2 , 30 mV lower than that of the RuO2 /NF (+)/20%-Pt/C/NF (-) electrolyzer. Such impressive bifunctional activities can be attributed to abundant active sites, adjusted electronic structure, lower charge-transfer resistance, enhanced electrochemically active surface area (ECSA), and surface- and volume-confined electrocatalysis resulting from the synergistic effects of the crystalline V3% -Co4 N core and amorphous CoNiPOx shells boosting water splitting in alkaline media.

Electrochemical deposition of amorphous cobalt oxides for oxygen evolution catalysis.

Project description:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial in water splitting for hydrogen production. However, its high over-potential and sluggish kinetics cause an additional energy loss and hinder its practical application. The cobalt spinel oxide Co3O4 exhibits a high catalytic activity for the OER in alkaline solutions. However, the activity requires further enhancement to meet the industrial demand for hydrogen production. This paper presents an electrochemical deposition method to obtain cobalt oxides with a controllable crystallinity on carbon paper (CP). Usually, cobalt oxides grown on CP have a Co3O4 spinel oxide structure. The self-supported Co3O4/CP exhibited a considerable catalytic activity for the OER. When a VS2 layer grown on the CP beforehand by a hydrothermal method was used as substrate, the deposited cobalt oxides were in an amorphous state, denoted as CoO x /VS2/CP, which exhibited a higher OER activity and better stability than those of Co3O4/CP. The enhancement in the catalytic activity was attributed to the mixture formation of different types of cobalt species, including Co3O4, CoO, Co(OH)2, and metallic Co, because of the reduction by VS2. We also clarify the significance of the crystallinity of cobalt oxides in the improvement in the OER activity. This process can also be applied to the direct formation of other types of self-supported oxide electrodes for OER catalysis.

Ultrathin sulfate-intercalated NiFe-layered double hydroxide nanosheets for efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution.

Project description:As an important two-dimensional material, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) show considerable potential in electrocatalytic reactions. However, the great thickness of the bulk LDH materials significantly limits their catalytic activity. In this work, we report ultrathin NiFe-LDH nanosheets with sulfate interlayer anions (Ni6Fe2(SO4)(OH)16·7H2O) (U-LDH(SO4 2-)), which can be synthesized in gram-scale by a simple solvothermal method. The U-LDH(SO4 2-) shows excellent stability and great electrocatalytic performance in OER with a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a low overpotential of 212 mV and a small Tafel slope of 65.2 mV dec-1, exhibiting its great potential for a highly efficient OER electrocatalyst.

Synergy between Fe and Ni in the optimal performance of (Ni,Fe)OOH catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction.

Project description:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical to solar production of fuels, but the reaction mechanism underlying the performance for a best OER catalyst, Fe-doped NiOOH [(Ni,Fe)OOH], remains highly controversial. We used grand canonical quantum mechanics to predict the OER mechanisms including kinetics and thus overpotentials as a function of Fe content in (Ni,Fe)OOH catalysts. We find that density functional theory (DFT) without exact exchange predicts that addition of Fe does not reduce the overpotential much. However, DFT with exact exchange predicts dramatic improvement in performance for (Ni,Fe)OOH, leading to an overpotential of 0.42 V and a Tafel slope of 23 mV/decade (dec), in good agreement with experiments, 0.3-0.4 V and 30 mV/dec. We reveal that the high spin [Formula: see text] Fe(IV) leads to efficient formation of an active O radical intermediate, while the closed shell [Formula: see text] Ni(IV) catalyzes the subsequent O-O coupling, and thus it is the synergy between Fe and Ni that delivers the optimal performance for OER.
