Project description:A novel Graphene oxide/Laponite RD/Chitosan ternary composite was synthesized by sol-gel method and freeze-drying method. The Laponite RD was silanized by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). Graphene oxide (GO) was prepared by an improved Hummers method. Under the acidic conditions, self-assembly recombination was realized by electrostatic interaction between modified Laponite RD and GO. The results from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy confirmed that the modified Laponite RD was successfully compounded with GO, and the composite is laminated and stacked. The results from BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) methods found that the BET-specific surface area of the hybrid aerogel significantly increased with the increase of the doping content of the composite, and the specific surface area of the aerogel composite with 20% doping content reached 81 m2/g. The structure of aerogel is porous, and there are numerous holes in the interior, which is closely related to adsorption properties. Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) test was used to explore the change of thermal properties of hybrid aerogel materials, and it was found that the addition of composite increased the initial decomposition temperature and thermal stability of hybrid aerogel. Finally, the potential applications of aerogel were tested, such as methylene blue adsorption and CO2 adsorption.

Project description:The search for packaging alternatives that reduce the presence of non-biodegradable plastics in water is a focus of much research today. This fact, together with the increasing demand for active packaging capable of prolonging the shelf life of foodstuffs and the rise in the use of natural biopolymers such as cellulose, motivate the present work. This work evaluates CMC films loaded with gallic acid reinforced with (ligno)cellulose nanofibres from various agricultural residues as candidates for use in active food packaging. The first stage of the study involved the evaluation of different nanofibres as the reinforcing agent in CMC films. Increasing proportions of nanofibres (1, 3, 5 and 10% w/w) from horticultural residues (H) and nanofibres from vine shoots (V), containing residual lignin (LCNF) and without it (CNF), and obtained by mechanical (M) or chemical (T) pretreatment, were studied. The results of this first stage showed that the optimum reinforcement effect was obtained with 3% H-MCNF or 3% V-MCNF, where up to 391% and 286% improvement in tensile strength was achieved, respectively. These films offered slightly improved UV-light blocking ability (40-55% UV-barrier) and water vapor permeability (20-30% improvement) over CMC. Next, bioactive films were prepared by incorporating 5 and 10% wt of gallic acid (GA) over the optimised formulations. It was found that the joint addition of cellulose nanofibres and GA enhanced all functional properties of the films. Mechanical properties improved to 70%, WVP to 50% and UV light blocking ability to 70% due to the synergistic effect of nanofibres and GA. Finally, the bioactive films exhibited potent antioxidant activity, 60-70% in the DPPH assay and >99% in the ABTS assay and high antimicrobial capacity against S. aureus.

Project description:To achieve the goal of "dual-carbon", induction furnaces with high efficiency and energy-saving advantages are paid more attention in the foundry and metallurgy industries. The service life and safety of induction furnaces strongly depended on the lining because expansion and forward sintering could result in the erosion and slag resistance of the lining. Focusing on the tailoring properties of alumina-magnesia-based dry ramming mixes, calcined magnesia particles were replaced with the novel multi-component materials of calcium magnesium aluminate (CaO-MgO-Al2O3, CMA) with a size of 200 mesh. Properties such as the bulk density, apparent porosity, strength, and slag corrosion resistance of alumina-magnesia-based dry ramming mix containing CMA were evaluated contrastively. The results demonstrate that the penetration index of manganese-bearing slag in dry ramming mixes first decreased and then slightly increased with the addition of CMA. Meanwhile, the permanent linear change in dry ramming mixes was gradually reduced. When the addition of CMA reached 4 wt%, the strength of the dry ramming mixes was slightly greater than the reference, and the slag penetration index was just 75% of the latter.

Project description:The present work investigates, for the first time, the synthesis and properties of some nanocomposite (NC) hydrogels obtained by the aqueous solution free radical polymerization of N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) in the presence of Laponite XLG (XLG) as a crosslinker, in comparison with the corresponding hydrogels prepared by using two conventional crosslinking divinyl monomers: N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) and tri(ethylene glycol) divinyl ether (DVE). The structure and properties of the hydrogels were studied by FTIR, TEM, XRD, SEM, swelling and rheological and compressive mechanical measurements. The results showed that DVE and XLG are much better crosslinking agents for the synthesis of PNVP hydrogels than MBA, leading to larger gel fractions and more homogeneous network hydrogels. The hydrogels crosslinked by either DVE or XLG displayed comparable viscoelastic and compressive mechanical properties under the experimental conditions employed. The properties of the XLG-crosslinked hydrogels steadily improved as the clay content increased. The addition of XLG as a second crosslinker together with a divinyl monomer strongly enhanced the material properties in comparison with the hydrogels crosslinked by only one of the crosslinkers involved. The FTIR analyses suggested that the crosslinking of the NC hydrogels was the result of two different interactions occurring between the clay platelets and the PNVP chains. Laponite XLG displayed a uniform distribution within the NC hydrogels, the clay being mostly exfoliated. However, a small number of platelet agglomerations were still present. The PNVP hydrogels described here may find applications for water purification and in the biomedical field as drug delivery systems or wound dressings.

Project description:This article contains data of effect of nano-modified additives on the technological properties of concrete mixes for winter concreting. The nano-modified additive, consisting of naphthalene formaldehyde, nano-modified silicon dioxide, saponified wood resin and sodium nitrate, ensures the manufacturability of the concrete mix, its quality laying and normal curing at low outdoor temperatures. The nano-modified additive allows prevents the phenomenon of segregation of concrete mixes of grade C12/15. The application of nano-modified additive together with sodium nitrate (4 wt.% of cement) ensures normal conditions for the hydration of cement paste at ambient temperatures from +5 °C to -5 °C. This dataset is associated with a research article entitled "Effect of nano-modified additives on properties of concrete mixtures during winter season" [1].

Project description:Green synthesis of nanoparticles for use in food packaging or biomedical applications is attracting increasing interest. In this study, the effect of the degree of substitution (0.7, 0.9 and 1.2) of a carboxymethylcellulose polymer matrix on the synthesis and properties of silver nanoparticles using melanin as a reductant was investigated. For this purpose, the mechanical, UV-Vis barrier, crystallinity, morphology, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the films were determined, as well as the color and changes in chemical bonds. The degree of substitution effected noticeable changes in the color of the films (the L* parameter was 2.87 ± 0.76, 5.59 ± 1.30 and 13.45 ± 1.11 for CMC 0.7 + Ag, CMC 0.9 + Ag and CMC 1.2 + Ag samples, respectively), the UV-Vis barrier properties (the transmittance at 280 nm was 4.51 ± 0.58, 7.65 ± 0.84 and 7.98 ± 0.75 for CMC 0.7 + Ag, CMC 0.9 + Ag and CMC 1.2 + Ag, respectively) or the antimicrobial properties of the films (the higher the degree of substitution, the better the antimicrobial properties of the silver nanoparticle-modified films). The differences in the properties of films with silver nanoparticles synthesized in situ might be linked to the increasing dispersion of silver nanoparticles as the degree of CMC substitution increases. Potentially, such films could be used in food packaging or biomedical applications.

Project description:It is structurally pertinent to understudy the important roles the self-compacting concrete (SCC) yield stress and plastic viscosity play in maintaining the rheological state of the concrete to flow. It is also important to understand that different concrete mixes with varying proportions of fine to coarse aggregate ratio and their nominal sizes produce different and corresponding flow- and fill-abilities, which are functions of the yield stress/plastic viscosity state conditions of the studied concrete. These factors have necessitated the development of regression models, which propose optimal rheological state behavior of SCC to ensure a more sustainable concreting. In this research paper on forecasting the rheological state properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC) mixes by using the response surface methodology (RSM) technique, the influence of nominal sizes of the coarse aggregate has been studied in the concrete mixes, which produced experimental mix entries. A total of eighty-four (84) concrete mixes were collected, sorted and split into training and validation sets to model the plastic viscosity and the yield stress of the SCC. In the field applications, the influence of the sampling sizes on the rheological properties of the concrete cannot be overstretched due to the importance of flow consistency in SCC in order to achieve effective workability. The RSM is a symbolic regression analysis which has proven to exercise the capacity to propose highly performable engineering relationships. At the end of the model exercise, it was found that the RSM proposed a closed-form parametric relationship between the outputs (plastic viscosity and yield stress) and the studied independent variables (the concrete components). This expression can be applied in the design and production of SCC with performance accuracies of above 95% and 90%, respectively. Also, the RSM produced graphical prediction of the plastic viscosity and yield stress at the optimized state conditions with respect to the measured variables, which could be useful in monitoring the performance of the concrete in practice and its overtime assessment. Generally, the production of SCC for field applications are justified by the components in this study and experimental entries beyond which the parametric relations and their accuracies are to be reverified.

Project description:The extracellular matrix (ECM) plays an important regulatory role in the development and progression of tumoral tissue. Its functions and properties are crucial in determining tumor cell behavior such as invasion, migration, and malignancy development. Our study explores the role of collagen type I in cancer development and spread using engineered tumor models like multicellular spheroids grown in collagen-based hydrogels to simulate early tumor formation. We employ microfluidic techniques to test the hypothesis that (i) adding Laponite nanoclay to collagen hydrogels modifies mechanical and rheological properties and (ii) changing the stiffness of the collagen microenvironment affects tumor spheroid growth. Our findings support our theories and suggest the use of ECM components and engineered tumor models in cancer research, offering a biocompatible and biomimetic method to tailor the mechanical properties of conventional collagen hydrogels.

Project description:The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a universal, immediate, and vast demand for comprehensive molecular diagnostic testing, especially real-time quantitative (qPCR)-based methods. This rapidly triggered a global shortage of testing capacity, equipment, and reagents. Even today, supply times for chemicals from date of order to delivery are often much longer than pre-pandemic. Furthermore, many companies have ratcheted up the price for minimum volumes of reaction master mixes essential for qPCR assays, causing additional problems for academic laboratories often operating on a shoestring. We have validated two strategies that stretch reagent supplies and, whilst particularly applicable in case of scarcity, can readily be incorporated into standard qPCR protocols, with appropriate validation. The first strategy demonstrates equivalent performance of a selection of "past expiry date" and newly purchased master mixes. This approach is valid for both standard and fast qPCR protocols. The second validates the use of these master mixes at less than 1x final concentration without loss of qPCR efficiency or sensitivity.
