Knowledge of journal impact factors among nursing faculty: a cross-sectional study.

ABSTRACT: Objective
The research assessed nursing faculty awareness and knowledge of the journal impact factor (JIF) and its impact on their publication choices.Methods
A qualitative cross-sectional questionnaire was developed using Fluid Survey and distributed electronically to nursing faculty and instructors at three post-secondary institutions in Saskatchewan. Data were collected on place and status of employment, knowledge and awareness of JIFs, and criteria used to choose journals for publication.Results
A total of forty-four nursing faculty and instructors completed the questionnaire. The authors found that faculty lack awareness or complete understanding of JIFs and that JIFs are not the most important or only criterion used when they choose a journal for publication.Conclusions
There are various reasons for choosing a journal for publication. It is important for librarians to understand faculty views of JIFs and their criteria for choosing journals for publication, so that librarians are better equipped to guide researchers in considering their academic goals, needs, and personal values.

Project description:BackgroundAcademic programs are increasing simulation-based learning in Saudi Arabia during COVID-19 pandemic; however, there is limited knowledge about these universities' simulation culture readiness. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore faculty perceptions of the readiness to integrate simulation into nursing programs.MethodsThis cross-sectional correlational study recruited faculty members in four nursing colleges at Saudi universities using the simulation culture organizational readiness survey 36-item questionnaire. A total of 88 faculty members from four Saudi universities were included. Descriptive, Pearson's correlation, independent sample t-test, and analysis of covariance analysis were utilized in this study.ResultsNearly 39.8% and 38.6% of the participants had Moderately and Very Much overall readiness for the simulation-based education (SBE), respectively. There were significant correlations between the summary impression on simulation culture readiness measures and simulation culture organizational readiness survey subscales (p < 0.001). Three simulation culture organizational readiness survey subscales (defined need and support for change, readiness for culture change, and time, personnel, and resource readiness) and the overall readiness for SBE were correlated with age, years since highest degree, years of experience in academia, and years using simulation in teaching (p < 0.05). The sustainability practices to embed culture subscale and summary impression were only correlated significantly with the number of years using simulation in teaching (p = 0.016 and 0.022, respectively). Females had a significantly higher mean in the sustainability practices to embed culture subscale (p = 0.006) and the overall readiness for simulation-based education (p = 0.05). Furthermore, there were significant differences among the highest degree in the overall readiness for SBE (p = 0.026), summary impression (p = 0.001), the defined need and support subscale (p = 0.05), the sustainability practices to embed culture subscale (p = 0.029), and the time, personnel, and resource readiness subscale (p = 0.015).ConclusionsFavorable simulation culture readiness results suggest great opportunities to advance clinical competencies in academic curricula and optimize educational outcomes. Nurse academic leaders should identify needs and resources to enhance simulation readiness and encourage the integration of simulation in nursing education.

Project description:Marijuana use for medical purposes dates back to ancient times. Despite its high therapeutic potential, its adverse effects have raised important legal restrictions. However, this situation in Spain may soon undergo significant changes, without anyone so far having studied the knowledge and/or the level of acceptance of medical marijuana by future healthcare professionals. The aim of the present study was to determine nursing students' knowledge of and attitudes towards medical marijuana. A cross-sectional design was used. A total of 578 nursing students from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), ≥18 years old and of both sexes, were invited to complete the Spanish version of the questionnaire "Medical Marijuana" between January and May 2019. A total of 364 students decided to participate in the study. More than 75% of the students agreed with the legalization of medical marijuana, although their knowledge and confidence levels regarding efficacy, safety and drug interactions of medical marijuana were low. Nursing students showed a clear lack of knowledge about medical marijuana and thus, in light of possible regulatory changes, it would be necessary to strengthen the training of nurses with respect to medical marijuana in order to make responsible use of it.

Project description:IntroductionThe administration of drugs is an important part of nurses' professional practice. A basic knowledge of pharmacological principles is required to make accurate decisions about drug management and conduct patient medication education. However, several studies have suggested that nurses have inadequate knowledge of pharmacology and medication management.ObjectiveTo explore the level of knowledge in pharmacology and medication management among nurses working in nursing homes (NHs).MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study at 24 NHs in Norway. The nurses took a multiple-choice test in pharmacology with 35 questions at their workplace. Each question had four alternative answers with one answer being correct. One point was awarded for a correct answer and zero for a wrong answer. The test included categories in general pharmacology, clinical pharmacology, and medication management.ResultsIn total, 145 nurses completed the questionnaire. In the range of 0-35 correct responses, the mean score for the sum of all questions was 22.5, which equates to 66% of responses being correct. Linear multiple regression showed no association regarding gender, age distribution among the nurses, years since completing basic education in nursing, years of work experience in NHs, postgraduate education, and knowledge of pharmacology and medication management. Knowledge was better in the category medication management (p < 0.001) than in the category's general pharmacology and clinical pharmacology. When evaluating specific test questions, 38.9% of the nurses answered a question on opioids correct, 64.1% a question on anticoagulants correct, 33.5% knew the prerequisites for generic substitution, and 45.5% did not know the difference between agonists and antagonists.ConclusionOur results are in line with previous findings. The participating nurses working in the NHs have insufficient knowledge in pharmacology and medication management. This may cause harm and undermine patient safety.

Project description:BackgroundInfographics have become an increasingly popular method to present research findings and increase the attention research receives. As many scientific journals now use infographics to boost the visibility and uptake of the research they publish, infographics have become an important tool for medical education. It is unknown whether such infographics convey the key characteristics that are needed to make useful interpretations of the data such as an adequate description of the study population, interventions, comparators and outcomes; methodological limitations; and numerical estimates of benefits and harms. This study described whether infographics published in peer-reviewed health and medical research journals contain key characteristics that are needed to make useful interpretations of clinical research.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, we identified peer-reviewed journals listed in the top quintile of 35 unique fields of medicine and health research listed in the Journal Citation Reports database. Two researchers screened journals for the presence of infographics. We defined an infographic as a graphical visual representation of research findings. We extracted data from a sample of two of the most recent infographics from each journal. Outcomes were the proportion of infographics that reported key characteristics such as study population, interventions, comparators and outcomes, benefits, harms, effect estimates with measures of precision, between-group differences and conflicts of interest; acknowledged risk of bias, certainty of evidence and study limitations; and based their conclusions on the study's primary outcome.ResultsWe included 129 infographics from 69 journals. Most infographics described the population (81%), intervention (96%), comparator (91%) and outcomes (94%), but fewer contained enough information on the population (26%), intervention (45%), comparator (20%) and outcomes (55%) for those components of the study to be understood without referring to the main paper. Risk of bias was acknowledged in only 2% of infographics, and none of the 69 studies that had declared a conflict of interest disclosed it in the infographics.ConclusionsMost infographics do not report sufficient information to allow readers to interpret study findings, including the study characteristics, results, and sources of bias. Our results can inform initiatives to improve the quality of the information presented in infographics.

Project description:ObjectiveIt is still unknown whether the stress level and stressors in Chinese nursing interns are influenced by teacher-related factors. This research was carried out for better understanding of the stress in nursing interns and distribution of stressors during their clinical practice and targeted measures to unwind the stress of nursing interns.MethodsA questionnaire survey, titled Questionnaire on Stressors of Nursing Interns during Clinical Practice, was conducted on nursing interns at a 3A Grade Hospital in Shandong Province. Characteristics of the nursing interns and stressors of nursing interns were collected. A multiple-linear regression model was used to explore the influencing factors of nursing interns' scores.ResultsA total of 132 nursing interns were investigated in this study, and the overall stress scores were calculated. The stressors during the internship include the nature and content of the job, role orientation, workload, conflict between study and work, practice preparation, and interpersonal relationships. Gender, education level, instructor encouragement, and parents engaged in the medical industry were adjusted in the multiple-linear regression model as covariates. All of these factors had significant impacts on the scores of stressors (P < 0.05), with the partial regression coefficient values of 13.38, -10.52, -5.02, 3.4, -9.89, -14.77, and -15.83 for factors like female, undergraduates, graduate students, never obtained encouragement from teachers, obtained encouragement from teachers occasionally, obtained encouragement from teachers frequently, and parents engaged in the medical industry, respectively.ConclusionThe stressors of nursing interns are mostly work-wise, and teachers' encouragement is an important protective factor for nursing interns to reduce stress. Therefore, clinical instructors should take targeted measures in teaching methods and work arrangements according to the needs of interns.

Project description:BackgroundThe use of artificial intelligence tools, such as ChatGPT, is on the rise in nursing education. In the field of healthcare, ChatGPT can offer unique opportunities to enhance the learning and clinical practice of nursing students. However, it is still necessary to explore how this tool affects students' performance and perception in their nursing education.ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of ChatGPT on nursing students' education and determine how it influences their learning outcomes.DesignThis study employed a quantitative cross-sectional design.SettingThe study was conducted in the Bachelor of Nursing program at the University of León, Spain.ParticipantsNinety-eight nursing students enrolled in the Nursing Care and Services Management course during the second semester of 2024 participated in the study.MethodsData were collected using three validated questionnaires that assessed sociodemographic characteristics, knowledge of artificial intelligence, and perceptions of using ChatGPT as an educational tool. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics, version 29.1.ResultsStudents who used ChatGPT showed a significant improvement in their academic grades (p < 0.05). Additionally, 89.5 % of the students reported significant improvements in their academic performance. Women perceived ChatGPT as especially useful for completing academic tasks (85.14 % versus 50.00 % in men, p = 0.003). A positive correlation was observed between prior use of ChatGPT and GPA (ρ = 0.240, p = 0.026).ConclusionsChatGPT is a valuable tool that enhances the learning and satisfaction of nursing students. Its integration into nursing education programs not only boosts academic performance but also promotes the adoption of technological innovations in professional training. Continuous incorporation of AI tools in education is recommended to improve academic outcomes and prepare students for evolving healthcare environments.

Project description:IntroductionNurses encounter children who report of pain of diverse and unknown causes in their professional work. The current study therefore assessed and compared nursing students and nurses' knowledge and attitudes pertaining to children's pain in the Ghanaian context. The goal of this was to have a baseline information to guide the development and implementation of the content for a sustainable educational programme (short-course) for nursing students and nurses in Ghana.MethodsBetween October and December 2018, a cross-sectional study was carried out among 554 final year nursing students and 65 nurses in Ghana. The Pediatric Nurses Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain (PNKAS) was used to collect data from participants who were affiliated to four educational institutions and eight hospitals. Data were descriptively and inferentially analyzed using chi-square test of independence, independent samples t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA).ResultsOur findings revealed that nursing students and nurses generally had unsatisfactory knowledge and attitudes towards pain management in children. Nursing students however, had significantly higher scores than nurses in the total PNKAS score and in 10 out of the 13 identified item-areas. Greater scores were obtained by nursing students in areas which were related to pain physiology, pharmacokinetics, pharmacology of analgesics and pain perceptions (p < .05). All the participating nurses could not accurately determine: the onset of action of orally administered analgesics, equianalgesia of orally administered morphine, and the right dosage of prescribed morphine for a child who consistently reported of moderate to severe pain.ConclusionFinal year nursing students and nurses have unsatisfactory knowledge and attitudes regarding children's pain; which reiterates the need for urgent and effective educational efforts in this area. Regular in-service training should be offered to post-registration nurses to enhance their pediatric pain knowledge and attitudes for improved pain care in children.

Project description:BackgroundSleep quality is related to physical and mental health. Though bedtime procrastination has been identified as a potentially key source of poor sleep quality, related research is scarce. The goal of our study was to determine bedtime procrastination among nursing students and identify its influencing factors.MethodsThis cross-sectional study comprised 1827 junior college nursing students. The data were collected from November to December 2021 using a mobile app-based survey. We evaluated demographic factors, Big Five personality traits, self-regulatory fatigue, future time perspective, and problematic mobile phone use. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to identify independent characteristics that influence bedtime procrastination among junior college nursing students.ResultsThe mean bedtime procrastination score in junior college nursing students was 25.11 ± 6.88. Family monthly income of 3000-6000 RMB (β = 0.740; p = 0.015), as well as that of > 6000 RMB (β = 1.708; p = 0.001), and an extroverted personality (β = 0.225; p = 0.001), self-regulatory fatigue (β = 0.135; p < 0.001), and problematic mobile phone use (β = 0.078; p < 0.001) had significant positive effects on bedtime procrastination. Conscientious personality (β = - 0.284; p = 0.003), neurotic personality (β = - 0.203; p = 0.031), and future time perspective (β = - 0.141; p < 0.001) had significant negative effects on bedtime procrastination.ConclusionThe nursing students who participated in this study had moderate levels of bedtime procrastination. Bedtime procrastination was predicted by higher monthly household income; personality traits of extroversion, conscientiousness, and neuroticism; self-regulatory fatigue; future time perspective; and problematic mobile phone use.Practical implicationsWe recommend that effective measures are needed to help alleviate bedtime procrastination and improve the health and well-being of nursing students.

Project description:The Taiwanese government has promoted palliative care consultation services (PCCS) to support terminally ill patients in acute ward settings to receive palliative care since 2005. Such an intervention can enhance the quality of life and dignity of terminally ill patients. However, research focusing on the relationship between the knowledge, attitude and practice of a PCCS using path modelling in nursing staff is limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to elucidate the effect of path modeling on the knowledge, attitude and practice toward PCCS in Taiwanese nursing staff.This was a cross-sectional, descriptive study design using convenience sampling. Data collected included demographics, knowledge, attitude and practice as measured by the PCCS inventory (KAP-PCCSI). Two hundred and eighty-four nursing staff from a medical center in northern Taiwan participated in the study in 2013. We performed descriptive statistics, regression analysis, and path modeling using SPSS 19.0 and set p < 0.05 as the statistical significance threshold.The results showed that the identical factor significantly associated with knowledge, attitude, and practice toward PCCS among nurses was the frequency of contact with PCCS. In addition, higher level of knowledge toward PCCS was associated with working in haematology and oncology wards, and participation in education related to palliative care. A more positive attitude toward PCCS was associated with working in a haematology and oncology ward, and experience of friends or relatives dying. Higher level of practice toward PCCS was associated with nurses who participated in education related to palliative care. In the path modeling, we found that holders of a master's degree indirectly positive affected practice toward PCCS. Possession of a bachelor degree or above, being single, working within a haematology and oncology ward, and frequency of contact with PCCS positively affected practice toward PCCS.Based on this study, it is proposed that consultation with PCCS has a positive impact on the care of terminally ill patients. Encouragement of staff to undertake further education can improve the practice of ward staff providing palliative care.
