"Deflecting elastic prism" and unidirectional localisation for waves in chiral elastic systems.

ABSTRACT: For the first time, a design of a "deflecting elastic prism" is proposed and implemented for waves in a chiral medium. A novel model of an elastic lattice connected to a non-uniform system of gyroscopic spinners is designed to create a unidirectional wave pattern, which can be diverted by modifying the arrangement of the spinners within the medium. This important feature of the gyro-system is exploited to send a wave from a point of the lattice to any other point in the lattice plane, in such a way that the wave amplitude is not significantly reduced along the path. We envisage that the proposed model could be very useful in physical and engineering applications related to directional control of elastic waves.

Dirac cones and chiral selection of elastic waves in a soft strip.

Project description:We study the propagation of in-plane elastic waves in a soft thin strip, a specific geometrical and mechanical hybrid framework which we expect to exhibit a Dirac-like cone. We separate the low frequencies guided modes (typically 100 Hz for a 1-cm-wide strip) and obtain experimentally the full dispersion diagram. Dirac cones are evidenced together with other remarkable wave phenomena such as negative wave velocity or pseudo-zero group velocity (ZGV). Our measurements are convincingly supported by a model (and numerical simulation) for both Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions. Finally, we perform one-way chiral selection by carefully setting the source position and polarization. Therefore, we show that soft materials support atypical wave-based phenomena, which is all of the more interesting as they make most of the biological tissues.

Elastic Alfven waves in elastic turbulence.

Project description:Speed of sound waves in gases and liquids are governed by the compressibility of the medium. There exists another type of non-dispersive wave where the wave speed depends on stress instead of elasticity of the medium. A well-known example is the Alfven wave, which propagates through plasma permeated by a magnetic field with the speed determined by magnetic tension. An elastic analogue of Alfven waves has been predicted in a flow of dilute polymer solution where the elastic stress of the stretching polymers determines the elastic wave speed. Here we present quantitative evidence of elastic Alfven waves in elastic turbulence of a viscoelastic creeping flow between two obstacles in channel flow. The key finding in the experimental proof is a nonlinear dependence of the elastic wave speed cel on the Weissenberg number Wi, which deviates from predictions based on a model of linear polymer elasticity.

Critical couplings in topological-insulator waveguide-resonator systems observed in elastic waves.

Project description:Waveguides and resonators are core components in the large-scale integration of electronics, photonics and phononics, both in existing and future scenarios. In certain situations, there is critical coupling of the two components; i.e. no energy passes through the waveguide after the incoming wave couples into the resonator. The transmission spectral characteristics resulting from this phenomenon are highly advantageous for signal filtering, switching, multiplexing and sensing. In the present study, adopting an elastic-wave platform, we introduce topological insulator (TI), a remarkable achievement in condensed matter physics over the past decade, into a classical waveguide-ring-resonator configuration. Along with basic similarities with classical systems, a TI system has important differences and advantages, mostly owing to the spin-momentum locked transmission states at the TI boundaries. As an example, a two-port TI waveguide resonator can fundamentally eliminate upstream reflections while completely retaining useful transmission spectral characteristics, and maximize the energy in the resonator, with possible applications being novel signal processing, gyro/sensing, lasering, energy harvesting and intense wave-matter interactions, using phonons, photons or even electrons. The present work further enhances confidence in using topological protection for practical device performance and functionalities, especially considering the crucial advantage of introducing (pseudo)spins to existing conventional configurations. More in-depth research on advancing phononics/photonics, especially on-chip, is foreseen.

Add-on unidirectional elastic metamaterial plate cloak.

Project description:Metamaterial cloaks control the propagation of waves to make an object invisible or insensible. To manipulate elastic waves in space, a metamaterial cloak is typically embedded in a base system that includes or surrounds a target object. The embedding is undesirable because it structurally weakens or permanently alters the base system. In this study, we propose a new add-on metamaterial elastic cloak that can be placed over and mechanically coupled with a base structure without embedding. We designed an add-on type annular metamaterial plate cloak through conformal mapping, fabricated it and performed cloaking experiments in a thin-plate with a hole. Experiments were performed in a thin plate by using the lowest symmetric Lamb wave centered at 100 kHz. As a means to check the cloaking performance of the add-on elastic plate cloak, possibly as a temporary stress reliever or a so-called "stress bandage", the degree of stress concentration mitigation and the recovery from the perturbed wave field due to a hole were investigated.

Intrinsic spin of elastic waves.

Project description:Unveiling spins of physical systems usually gives people a fundamental understanding of the geometrical properties of waves from classical to quantum aspects. A great variety of research has shown that transverse waves can possess nontrivial spins and spin-related properties naturally. However, until now, we still lack essential physical insights about the spin nature of longitudinal waves. Here, demonstrated by elastic waves, we uncover spins for longitudinal waves and the mixed longitudinal-transverse waves that play essential roles in spin-momentum locking. Based on this spin perspective, several abnormal phenomena beyond pure transverse waves are attributed to the hybrid spin induced by mixed longitudinal-transverse waves. The unique hybrid spin reveals the complex spin essence in elastic waves and advances our understanding about their fundamental geometrical properties. We also show that these spin-dependent phenomena can be exploited to control the wave propagation, such as nonsymmetric elastic wave excitation by spin pairs, a unidirectional Rayleigh wave, and spin-selected elastic wave routing. These findings are generally applicable for wave cases with longitudinal and transverse components.

Conical Refraction of Elastic Waves by Anisotropic Metamaterials and Application for Parallel Translation of Elastic Waves.

Project description:Conical refraction, which is quite well-known in electromagnetic waves, has not been explored well in elastic waves due to the lack of proper natural elastic media. Here, we propose and design a unique anisotropic elastic metamaterial slab that realizes conical refraction for horizontally incident longitudinal or transverse waves; the single-mode wave is split into two oblique coupled longitudinal-shear waves. As an interesting application, we carried out an experiment of parallel translation of an incident elastic wave system through the anisotropic metamaterial slab. The parallel translation can be useful for ultrasonic non-destructive testing of a system hidden by obstacles. While the parallel translation resembles light refraction through a parallel plate without angle deviation between entry and exit beams, this wave behavior cannot be achieved without the engineered metamaterial because an elastic wave incident upon a dissimilar medium is always split at different refraction angles into two different modes, longitudinal and shear.

Unidirectional chiral scattering from single enantiomeric plasmonic nanoparticles.

Project description:Controlling scattering and routing of chiral light at the nanoscale is important for optical information processing and imaging, quantum technologies as well as optical manipulation. Here, we introduce a concept of rotating chiral dipoles in order to achieve unidirectional chiral scattering. Implementing this concept by engineering multipole excitations in helicoidal plasmonic nanoparticles, we experimentally demonstrate enantio-sensitive and highly-directional forward scattering of circularly polarised light. The intensity of this highly-directional scattering is defined by the mutual relation between the handedness of the incident light and the chirality of the structure. The concept of rotating chiral dipoles offers numerous opportunities for engineering scattering from chiral nanostructures and optical nano-antennas paving the way for innovative designs and applications of chiral light-matter interactions.

Unidirectional Chiral Emission via Twisted Bi-layer Metasurfaces.

Project description:Controlling and channeling light emissions from unpolarized quantum dots into specific directions with chiral polarization remains a key challenge in modern photonics. Stacked metasurface designs offer a potential compact solution for chirality and directionality engineering. However, experimental observations of directional chiral radiation from resonant metasurfaces with quantum emitters remain obscure. In this paper, we present experimental observations of unidirectional chiral emission from a twisted bi-layer metasurface via multi-dimensional control, including twist angle, interlayer distance, and lateral displacement between the top and bottom layers, as enabled by doublet alignment lithography (DAL). First, maintaining alignment, the metasurface demonstrates a resonant intrinsic optical chirality with near-unity circular dichroism of 0.94 and reflectance difference of 74%, where a high circular dichroism greater than 0.9 persists across a wide range of angles from -11 to 11 degrees. Second, engineered lateral displacement induces a unidirectional chiral resonance, resulting in unidirectional chiral emission from the quantum dots deposited onto the metasurface. Our bi-layer metasurfaces offer a universal compact platform for efficient radiation manipulation over a wide angular range, promising potential applications in miniaturized lasers, grating couplers, and chiral nanoantennas.

Topological materials for full-vector elastic waves.

Project description:Elastic wave manipulation is important in a wide variety of applications, including information processing in small elastic devices and noise control in large solid structures. The recent emergence of topological materials has opened new avenues for modulating elastic waves in solids. However, because of the full-vector feature and the complicated couplings of the longitudinal and transverse components of elastic waves, manipulating elastic waves is generally difficult compared with manipulating acoustic waves (scalar waves) and electromagnetic waves (vectorial waves but transverse only). To date, topological materials, including insulators and semimetals, have been used for acoustic and electromagnetic waves. Although topological materials with elastic waves have also been reported, the observed topological edge modes lie on the domain wall. A natural question arises: Is there an elastic metamaterial with topological edge modes on its own boundary? Here, we report a 3D metal-printed bilayer metamaterial that topologically insulates elastic waves. By introducing chiral interlayer couplings, the spin-orbit couplings for elastic waves are induced, which give rise to nontrivial topological properties. Helical edge states with vortex features were demonstrated on the boundary of the single topological phase. We further show a heterostructure of the metamaterial that exhibits tunable edge transport. Our findings could be used in devices based on elastic waves in solids.

Topologically protected elastic waves in phononic metamaterials.

Project description:Surface waves in topological states of quantum matter exhibit unique protection from backscattering induced by disorders, making them ideal carriers for both classical and quantum information. Topological matters for electrons and photons are largely limited by the range of bulk properties, and the associated performance trade-offs. In contrast, phononic metamaterials provide access to a much wider range of material properties. Here we demonstrate numerically a phononic topological metamaterial in an elastic-wave analogue of the quantum spin Hall effect. A dual-scale phononic crystal slab is used to support two effective spins for phonons over a broad bandwidth, and strong spin-orbit coupling is realized by breaking spatial mirror symmetry. By preserving the spin polarization with an external load or spatial symmetry, phononic edge states are shown to be robust against scattering from discrete defects as well as disorders in the continuum, demonstrating topological protection for phonons in both static and time-dependent regimes.
