Accelerated crystallization of colloidal glass by mechanical oscillation.

ABSTRACT: Crystallization of a hard-sphere colloidal glass by mechanical oscillation is investigated, and accelerated crystallization is found at a specific frequency. The crystallization frequency increases as attractive force between particles increases, indicating that interparticle interaction affects the crystallization frequency. Time scale of the mechanical oscillation is different from that of the slow relaxation, and notable relationship with the low-frequency mode is not observed. The experimental results are not explained by the previously proposed model for crystallization by oscillatory shear. Conversely, we speculate that activations of the fast relaxation and particle motion in crystal-like clusters are possible causes of the observations.

Mechanical oscillation accelerating nucleation and nuclei growth in hard-sphere colloidal glass.

Project description:Crystallization from amorphous solids is generally caused by activating phonons in a wide frequency range during heat treatment. In contrast, the activation of phonons in a narrow frequency range using ultrasonic treatment also causes crystallization below the glass transition temperature. These behaviors indicate that crystallization is related to the atomic motion in the glass state, and it is suggested that the activation of specific atomic motion can cause crystallization without increasing temperature. In this study, we observe nucleation and nuclei growth caused by mechanical oscillation in a hard-sphere colloidal glass and evaluate the effect of mechanical oscillation on the structural evolution in the early stage of the crystallization. Oscillation between 5 and 100 Hz is applied to the colloidal glass, and it is observed that the nucleation rate increases under the 70 Hz oscillation, resulting in formation of stable nuclei in a short amount of time. The nuclei growth is also accelerated by the 70 Hz oscillation, whereas increases in the nucleation rate and nuclei growth were not observed at other frequencies. Finally, activation of the diffusion-based rattling of particles by caging is considered as a possible mechanism of the observations.

Surface melting of a colloidal glass.

Project description:Despite their technological relevance, a full microscopic understanding of glasses is still lacking. This applies even more to their surfaces whose properties largely differ from that of the bulk material. Here, we experimentally investigate the surface of a two-dimensional glass as a function of the effective temperature. To yield a free surface, we use an attractive colloidal suspension of micron-sized particles interacting via tunable critical Casimir forces. Similar to crystals, we observe surface melting of the glass, i.e., the formation of a liquid film at the surface well below the glass temperature. Underneath, however, we find an unexpected region with bulk density but much faster particle dynamics. It results from connected clusters of highly mobile particles which are formed near the surface and deeply percolate into the underlying material. Because its thickness can reach several tens of particle diameters, this layer may elucidate the poorly understood properties of thin glassy films which find use in many technical applications.

Experimental observation of the marginal glass phase in a colloidal glass.

Project description:The replica theory of glasses predicts that in the infinite dimensional mean field limit, there exist two distinct glassy phases of matter: stable glass and marginal glass. We have developed a technique to experimentally probe these phases of matter using a colloidal glass. We avoid the difficulties inherent in measuring the long time behavior of glasses by instead focusing on the very short time dynamics of the ballistic to caged transition. We track a single tracer particle within a slowly densifying glass and measure the resulting mean squared displacement (MSD). By analyzing the MSD, we find that upon densification, our colloidal system moves through several states of matter. At lowest densities, it is a subdiffusive liquid. Next, it behaves as a stable glass, marked by the appearance of a plateau in the MSD whose magnitude shrinks with increasing density. However, this shrinking plateau does not shrink to zero; instead, at higher densities, the system behaves as a marginal glass, marked by logarithmic growth in the MSD toward that previous plateau value. Finally, at the highest experimental densities, the system returns to the stable glass phase. This provides direct experimental evidence for the existence of a marginal glass in three dimensions.

Entropy-Mediated Crystallization Manipulation in Glass.

Project description:The entropy mediated temperature-structure evolution has attracted significant interest, which is used for the development of functional alloys and ceramics. But such strategy has not yet been demonstrated for development of non-metallic glasses. Herein, the successful application of the entropy engineering concept to non-metallic glass to manipulate its in situ crystallization process is demonstrated. The comparison of the entropy concept in alloys, ceramics, and non-metallic glass is discussed. As a typical example, the activation and preservation of the entropy stabilized effect of a typical niobosilicate glass system at different temperatures are studied. The relation between the micro-configurations and the entropic property is analyzed. Via the entropy engineering strategy, the crystallization of the niobosilicate glass can be manipulated. As a result, the LiNbO3 nanocrystal-in-glass (NiG) composite with high crystallinity is developed, which exhibits 8 times higher nonlinearity compared with the β-BBO crystal. The developed NiG composite is demonstrated for practical application in precise measurement of the duration and phase of ultra-short femtosecond pulse.

Shape-sensitive crystallization in colloidal superball fluids.

Project description:Guiding the self-assembly of materials by controlling the shape of the individual particle constituents is a powerful approach to material design. We show that colloidal silica superballs crystallize into canted phases in the presence of depletants. Some of these phases are consistent with the so-called "Λ1" lattice that was recently predicted as the densest packing of superdisks. As the size of the depletant is reduced, however, we observe a transition to a square phase. The differences in these entropically stabilized phases result from an interplay between the size of the depletants and the fine structure of the superball shape. We find qualitative agreement of our experimental results both with a phase diagram computed on the basis of the volume accessible to the depletants and with simulations. By using a mixture of depletants, one of which is thermosensitive, we induce solid-to-solid phase transitions between square and canted structures. The use of depletant size to leverage fine features of the shape of particles in driving their self-assembly demonstrates a general and powerful mechanism for engineering novel materials.

Pressureless Crystallization of Glass for Transparent Nanoceramics.

Project description:Transparent nanoceramics embedded with highly dense crystalline domains are promising for applications in missile guidance, infrared night vision, and laser and nuclear radiation detection. Unfortunately, current nanoceramics are strictly constrained by the stringent construction procedures such as super-high pressure and containerless processing. Here, a pressureless crystallization engineering strategy in glass for elaboration of transparent nanoceramics and fibers is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. By intentional creation of a sharp contrast between nucleation and growth rates, the crystal growth rate during glass crystallization can be significantly suppressed. Importantly, this unique phase-transition habit enables the achievement of transparent nanoceramics and even smooth fibers with extremely tiny crystalline size (≈20 nm) and high crystallinity (≈97%) under atmospheric pressure. This allows the generation of an attractive nonlinear optical response such as dynamic optical filtering and luminescence in the mid-infrared waveband of 4300-4950 nm. These findings highlight that the strategy to switch the phase-transition habit of glass into the unconventional crystallization regime may provide new opportunities for the creation of next-generation nanoceramics and fibers.

Experimental identification of topological defects in 2D colloidal glass.

Project description:Topological defects are singularities within a field that cannot be removed by continuous transformations. The definition of these irregularities requires an ordered reference configuration, calling into question whether they exist in disordered materials, such as glasses. However, recent work suggests that well-defined topological defects emerge in the dynamics of glasses, even if they are not evident in the static configuration. In this study, we reveal the presence of topological defects in the vibrational eigenspace of a two-dimensional experimental colloidal glass. These defects strongly correlate with the vibrational features and spatially correlate with each other and structural "soft spots", more prone to plastic flow. This work experimentally confirms the existence of topological defects in disordered systems revealing the complex interplay between topology, disorder, and dynamics.

Curvature instability of chiral colloidal membranes on crystallization.

Project description:Buckling and wrinkling instabilities are failure modes of elastic sheets that are avoided in the traditional material design. Recently, a new paradigm has appeared where these instabilities are instead being utilized for high-performance applications. Multiple approaches such as heterogeneous gelation, capillary stresses, and confinement have been used to shape thin macroscopic elastic sheets. However, it remains a challenge to shape two-dimensional self-assembled monolayers at colloidal or molecular length scales. Here, we show the existence of a curvature instability that arises during the crystallization of finite-sized monolayer membranes of chiral colloidal rods. While the bulk of the membrane crystallizes, its edge remains fluid like and exhibits chiral ordering. The resulting internal stresses cause the flat membrane to buckle macroscopically and wrinkle locally. Our results demonstrate an alternate pathway based on intrinsic stresses instead of the usual external ones to assemble non-Euclidean sheets at the colloidal length scale.

Size-dependent thermodynamic structural selection in colloidal crystallization.

Project description:Nucleation and growth of crystalline phases play an important role in a variety of physical phenomena, ranging from freezing of liquids to assembly of colloidal particles. Understanding these processes in the context of colloidal crystallization is of great importance for predicting and controlling the structures produced. In many systems, crystallites that nucleate have structures differing from those expected from bulk equilibrium thermodynamic considerations, and this is often attributed to kinetic effects. In this work, we consider the self-assembly of a binary mixture of colloids in two dimensions, which exhibits a structural transformation from a non-close-packed to a close-packed lattice during crystal growth. We show that this transformation is thermodynamically driven, resulting from size dependence of the relative free energy between the two structures. We demonstrate that structural selection can be entirely thermodynamic, in contrast to previously considered effects involving growth kinetics or interaction with the surrounding fluid phase.

Metal-Assisted and Microwave-Accelerated Evaporative Crystallization.

Project description:We describe a platform technology, called metal-assisted and microwave-assisted evaporative crystallization (MA-MAEC), based on the combined use of silver nanoparticles and microwave heating for selective and rapid crystallization of small molecules. In this regard, the crystallization of a model small molecule (glycine) was achieved in several seconds. Glycine crystals grown on silver nanostructures with and without microwave heating were found to be larger than those grown on blank glass slides. The MA-MAEC technique has the potential to selectively grow the desired polymorphs of small molecules "on-demand" in a fraction of the time as compared to the conventional evaporative crystallization.
