Tetraphenylpyrazine-based AIEgens: facile preparation and tunable light emission.

ABSTRACT: Research on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has been a hot topic. Due to enthusiastic efforts by many researchers, hundreds of AIE luminogens (AIEgens) have been generated which were mainly based on archetypal silole, tetraphenylethene, distyrylanthracene, triphenylethene, and tetraphenyl-1,4-butadiene, etc. To enlarge the family of AIEgens and to enrich their functions, new AIEgens are in high demand. In this work, we report a new kind of AIEgen based on tetraphenylpyrazine (TPP), which could be readily prepared under mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, we show that the TPP derivatives possess a good thermal stability and their emission could be fine-tuned by varying the substituents on their phenyl rings. It is anticipated that TPP derivatives could serve as a new type of widely utilized AIEgen, based on their facile preparation, good thermo-, photo- and chemostabilities, and efficient emission.

Tetraphenylpyrimidine-Based AIEgens: Facile Preparation, Theoretical Investigation and Practical Application.

Project description:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has become a hot research area and tremendous amounts of AIE-active luminogens (AIEgens) have been generated. To further promote the development of AIE, new AIEgens are highly desirable. Herein, new AIEgens based on tetraphenylpyrimidine (TPPM) are rationally designed according to the AIE mechanism of restriction of intramolecular motion, and facilely prepared under mild reaction conditions. The photophysical property of the generated TPPM, TPPM-4M and TPPM-4P are systematically investigated and the results show that they feature the aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE) characteristics. Theoretical study shows the high-frequency bending vibrations in the central pyrimidine ring of TPPM derivatives dominate the nonradiative decay channels. Thanks to the AEE feature, their aggregates can be used to detect explosives with super-amplification quenching effects, and the sensing ability is higher than typical AIE-active tetraphenylethene. It is anticipated that TPPM derivatives could serve as a new type of widely used AIEgen based on their facile preparation and good thermo-, photo- and chemostabilities.

Composite Supraparticles with Tunable Light Emission.

Project description:Robust luminophores emitting light with broadly tunable colors are desirable in many applications such as light-emitting diode (LED)-based lighting, displays, integrated optoelectronics and biology. Nanocrystalline quantum dots with multicolor emission, from core- and shell-localized excitons, as well as solid layers of mixed quantum dots that emit different colors have been proposed. Here, we report on colloidal supraparticles that are composed of three types of Cd(Se,ZnS) core/(Cd,Zn)S shell nanocrystals with emission in the red, green, and blue. The emission of the supraparticles can be varied from pure to composite colors over the entire visible region and fine-tuned into variable shades of white light by mixing the nanocrystals in controlled proportions. Our approach results in supraparticles with sizes spanning the colloidal domain and beyond that combine versatility and processability with a broad, stable, and tunable emission, promising applications in lighting devices and biological research.

Facile Preparation of Cellulose Beads with Tunable Graded Pores and High Mechanical Strength.

Project description:Cellulose-based hierarchical porous beads exhibit significant application potential in adsorption and separation systems due to their degradation and biocompatibility. However, the current fabrications of cellulose beads show poor mechanical properties and a difficult-to-regulate hierarchical porous structure, reducing their lifespan of use and limiting their application in fine separation. Here, we reported the facile creep-drop method to prepare cellulose beads that enabled systemic regulation of the macro-size, micropore structures, and mechanical properties by optimizing injection nozzle diameter, the composition of the coagulation bath, the temperature of the coagulation bath, and cellulose concentration. Notably, during the molding process, the H2SO4-Na2SO4 composite solidification bath endowed cellulose beads with a dense shell layer and a loose core layer, which achieved the integration of mechanical properties and high porosity. The cellulose beads exhibited high porosity (93.38-96.18%) and high sphericity (86.78-94.44%) by modulating the shell thickness of the cellulose beads. In particular, the cellulose beads exhibited excellent mechanical properties with a high compressive strength of 544.24 kPa at a 5% cellulose concentration. It is expected that these cellulose beads with tunable microstructures can realize their potential for applications in the fields of wastewater treatment, chemical engineering, bioengineering, medicine, and pharmaceuticals.

Metallacycle-cored supramolecular assemblies with tunable fluorescence including white-light emission.

Project description:Control over the fluorescence of supramolecular assemblies is crucial for the development of chemosensors and light-emitting materials. Consequently, the postsynthetic modification of supramolecular structures via host-guest interactions has emerged as an efficient strategy in recent years that allows the facile tuning of the photophysical properties without requiring a tedious chemical synthesis. Herein, we used a phenanthrene-21-crown-7 (P21C7)-based 60° diplatinum(II) acceptor 8 in the construction of three exohedral P21C7 functionalized rhomboidal metallacycles 1-3 which display orange, cyan, and green emission colors, respectively. Although these colors originate from the dipyridyl precursors 10-12, containing triphenylamine-, tetraphenylethene-, and pyrene-based fluorophores, respectively, the metal-ligand coordination strongly influences their emission properties. The metallacycles were further linked into emissive supramolecular oligomers by the addition of a fluorescent bis-ammonium linker 4 that forms complementary host-guest interactions with the pendant P21C7 units. Notably, the final ensemble derived from a 1:1 mixture of 1 and 4 displays a concentration-dependent emission. At low concentration, i.e., <25 µM, it emits a blue color, whereas an orange emission was observed when the concentration exceeds >5 mM. Moreover, white-light emission was observed from the same sample at a concentration of 29 µM, representing a pathway to construct supramolecular assemblies with tunable fluorescence properties.

Widely tunable mid-infrared light emission in thin-film black phosphorus.

Project description:Thin-film black phosphorus (BP) is an attractive material for mid-infrared optoelectronic applications because of its layered nature and a moderate bandgap of around 300 meV. Previous photoconduction demonstrations show that a vertical electric field can effectively reduce the bandgap of thin-film BP, expanding the device operational wavelength range in mid-infrared. Here, we report the widely tunable mid-infrared light emission from a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)/BP/hBN heterostructure device. With a moderate displacement field up to 0.48 V/nm, the photoluminescence (PL) peak from a ~20-layer BP flake is continuously tuned from 3.7 to 7.7 μm, spanning 4 μm in mid-infrared. The PL emission remains perfectly linear-polarized along the armchair direction regardless of the bias field. Moreover, together with theoretical analysis, we show that the radiative decay probably dominates over other nonradiative decay channels in the PL experiments. Our results reveal the great potential of thin-film BP in future widely tunable, mid-infrared light-emitting and lasing applications.

Fatty Acids/Tetraphenylethylene Conjugates: Hybrid AIEgens for the Preparation of Peptide-Based Supramolecular Gels.

Project description:Aggregation-induced emissive materials are gaining particular attention in the last decades due to their wide application in different fields, from optical devices to biomedicine. In this work, compounds having these kinds of properties, composed of tetraphenylethylene scaffold combined with fatty acids of different lengths, were synthesized and characterized. These molecules were found able to self-assemble into different supramolecular emissive structures depending on the chemical composition and water content. Furthermore, they were used as N-terminus capping agents in the development of peptide-based materials. The functionalization of a 5-mer laminin-derived peptide led to the obtainment of luminescent fibrillary materials that were not cytotoxic and were able to form supramolecular gels in aqueous environment.

White-Light Emission and Tunable Luminescence Colors of Polyimide Copolymers Based on FRET and Room-Temperature Phosphorescence.

Project description:Thermally stable copolyimide (CoPI) films exhibiting high optical transparency and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) were prepared by copolymerizing fluorescent dianhydride and brominated phosphorescent dianhydride with an alicyclic diamine. The CoPI films underwent a 5 wt % degradation at a temperature higher than 349 °C and exhibited dual fluorescent and phosphorescent emissions owing to their efficient Förster resonance energy transfer from the fluorescent to phosphorescent dianhydride moieties in the main chains, followed by an intersystem crossing from the singlet to triplet state of the latter moiety atoms. The CoPIs displayed bright RTP under a vacuum with various colors produced when adjusting the copolymerization ratio. CoPI with 5 mol % phosphorescent moiety (CoPI-05) emitted white light with high optical transparency owing to the suppression of the PI chain aggregation that causes a yellowish coloration. The copolymerization of fluorescent and phosphorescent PI moieties can control the photoluminescent properties of PI films and is applicable to color-tunable solid-state emitters, ratiometric oxygen sensors, and solar-spectrum converters.

Mechanical Force-Induced Blue-Shifted and Enhanced Emission for AIEgens.

Project description:Mechanochromic (MC) luminescence of organic molecules has been emerging as a promising smart material for optical recording and memory devices. At the same time, pressure-induced blue-shifted and enhanced luminescence are rarely reported now. Herein, a series of cyanostilbene-based AIEgens with different substituents were synthesized to evaluate the influence of morphology transformation and push-pull electronic effect on the MC luminescence. Among these luminophores, compound 1 with one cyano group and diethylamino group was more susceptible to mechanical stimuli and obtained blue-shifted and enhanced fluorescence in response to anisotropic grinding. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns indicated that the MC behaviors were ascribed to the solid-state morphology transition from crystal-to-crystal. Analysis of crystal structures revealed that loose molecular packing is a key factor for high high-contrast MC luminescence. The smart molecular design, together with the excellent performance, verified that luminophores with twisted structures are ideal candidates for MC luminogens.

Facile Preparation of Micrometer KClO₄/Zr Energetic Composite Particles with Enhanced Light Radiation.

Project description:Developing energetic composite materials consisting of fuel and oxidizer is an effective strategy to enhance the energy release property. However, this strategy has rarely been applied in Potassium Perchlorate (KClO₄)-containing energetic materials, even though KClO₄ is a much stronger oxidizer than most previously reported metal-oxide oxidizer. One of the main obstacles is the lack of simple and in situ ways to introduce KClO₄ into the composite. In present work, micrometer KClO₄/Zirconium (KClO₄/Zr) composite particles were successfully prepared using a facile chemical solution-deposition method. The structure and particle morphologies of as-obtained KClO₄/Zr composite were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscope (SEM)-EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectrometer). The evolutionary combustion behavior was evaluated using flame-based light-radiation spectra and successive photography technique. Results showed that the morphology, light-radiation properties and flame-evolution characteristics of KClO₄/Zr composite varied with the content of KClO₄ and the particle size of Zr. Compared with the mechanical mixture of KClO₄/Zr, the KClO₄/Zr composite showed much higher light-radiation intensity and longer light-emission duration time after reasonably controlling the preparation parameters. Flame photographs revealed that the enhanced light radiation of KClO₄/Zr composite should be ascribed to higher use efficiency of "oxygen" in the oxidizer, which promoted both the solid⁻solid and solid⁻gas reaction pathways between KClO₄ and Zr.
