Stability and Hydrocarbon/Fluorocarbon Sorption of a Metal-Organic Framework with Fluorinated Channels.

ABSTRACT: The stabilities and hydrocarbon/fluorocarbon sorption properties of a zeolite-like metal-organic framework (MOF) Zn(hfipbb) with fluorinated channels has been studied. By the combination of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) measurements, we confirm that Zn(hfipbb) has exceptionally high hydrothermal and thermal stabilities. The adsorption behaviors of water and methanol by Zn(hfipbb) indicate that it is highly hydrophobic but with high adsorption of alcohols. Hexane and perfluorohexane adsorption measurements show that the fluorinated channels in Zn(hfipbb) have high affinity with hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon. The high fluorophilic nature of the channels and the high stability of the compound suggest its potential utility in practical separation applications.

Achieving burst Li<sup>+</sup> channels via quasi-two-dimensional fluorinated metal-organic framework modulating functionalized interface.

Project description:The development of disordered Li dendrite and the adverse reaction between Li and electrolyte impede practical use of Li metal batteries (LMB). Herein, we propose quasi-two-dimensional fluorinated metal-organic framework carbon (q2D-FcMOF) that is utilized to construct artificial solid electrolyte interface (ASEI) to achieve robust interfacial protective double-layer. The outer organic layer provides ample space for Li deposition, while the inner inorganic LiF layer promotes conduction of Li+ and blocks electron transport. Metal clusters within the hybrid layer are uniformly dispersed, encouraging Li+ to cluster around metal active sites that are thermodynamically compatible with Li. Consequently, q2D-FcZ8@Li symmetrical batteries demonstrate an ultralong cycle life over 3600 h. When paried with commercial cathodes, the cells exhibite cyclability under conditions of high-loading, lean-electrolyte, even exposure to air for some time. This research suggests an effective method for fabricating ASEI using 2D quasi-ordered superstructure MOF NPs, which is expected to the development of LMB.

Graphene inclusion controlling conductivity and gas sorption of metal-organic framework.

Project description:A general approach to prepare composite films of metal-organic frameworks and graphene has been developed. Films of copper(ii)-based HKUST-1 and HKUST-1/graphene composites were grown solvothermally on glassy carbon electrodes. The films were chemically tethered to the substrate by diazonium electrografting resulting in a large electrode coverage and good stability in solution for electrochemical studies. HKUST-1 has poor electrical conductivity, but we demonstrate that the addition of graphene to HKUST-1 partially restores the electrochemical activity of the electrodes. The enhanced activity, however, does not result in copper(ii) to copper(i) reduction in HKUST-1 at negative potentials. The materials were characterised in-depth: microscopy and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction demonstrate uniform films of crystalline HKUST-1, and Raman spectroscopy reveals that graphene is homogeneously distributed in the films. Gas sorption studies show that both HKUST-1 and HKUST-1/graphene have a large CO2/N2 selectivity, but the composite has a lower surface area and CO2 adsorption capacity in comparison with HKUST-1, while CO2 binds stronger to the composite at low pressures. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy reveals that both monomeric and dimeric copper units are present in the materials, and that the two materials behave differently upon hydration, i.e. HKUST-1/graphene reacts slower by interaction with water. The changed gas/vapour sorption properties and the improved electrochemical activity are two independent consequences of combining graphene with HKUST-1.

Chiral Lanthanum Metal-Organic Framework with Gated CO<sub>2</sub> Sorption and Concerted Framework Flexibility.

Project description:A metal-organic framework (MOF) CTH-17 based on lanthanum(III) and the conformationally chiral linker 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexakis(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene, cpb6-: [La2(cpb)]·1.5dmf was prepared by the solvothermal method in dimethylformamide (dmf) and characterized by variable-temperature X-ray powder diffraction (VTPXRD), variable-temperature X-ray single-crystal diffraction (SCXRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). CTH-17 is a rod-MOF with new topology och. It has high-temperature stability with Sohncke space groups P6122/P6522 at 90 K and P622 at 300 and 500 K, all phases characterized with SCXRD and at 293 K also with three-dimensional (3D) electron diffraction. VTPXRD indicates a third phase appearing after 620 K and stable up to 770 K. Gas sorption isotherms with N2 indicate a modest surface area of 231 m2 g-1 for CTH-17, roughly in agreement with the crystal structure. Carbon dioxide sorption reveals a gate-opening effect of CTH-17 where the structure opens up when the loading of CO2 reaches approximately ∼0.45 mmol g-1 or 1 molecule per unit cell. Based on the SCXRD data, this is interpreted as flexibility based on the concerted movements of the propeller-like hexatopic cpb linkers, the movement intramolecularly transmitted by the π-π stacking of the cpb linkers and helped by the fluidity of the LaO6 coordination sphere. This was corroborated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations yielding the chiral phase (P622) as the energy minimum and a completely racemic phase (P6/mmm), with symmetric cpb linkers representing a saddle point in a racemization process.

Framework-flexibility driven selective sorption of p-xylene over other isomers by a dynamic metal-organic framework.

Project description:Chemical separation has great importance in industrial applications. Separation of xylene isomers still prevails to be one of the most important challenges in chemical industry, due to the large amount of commercial use of p-xylene in the production of beverage bottles, fibers and films. A novel Zn(II)-based dynamic coordination framework based on flexible ether-linkage, exhibiting selective adsorption of p-Xylene over its congener C8-alkyl aromatic isomers at ambient conditions is reported. Notably, no dynamic structure based MOF compound is known in the literature which shows clear preference of p-xylene over other isomers. This type of framework-breathing and guest-induced reversible solid-state structural transformations with unique adsorption selectivity can be exploited purposefully to develop smart functional host materials capable of industrially important chemical separations.

Framework disorder and its effect on selective hysteretic sorption of a T-shaped azole-based metal-organic framework.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks with highly ordered porosity have been studied extensively. In this paper, the effect of framework (pore) disorder on the gas sorption of azole-based isoreticular Cu(II) MOFs with rtl topology and characteristic 1D tubular pore channels is investigated for the first time. In contrast to other isoreticular rtl metal-organic frameworks, the Cu(II) metal-organic framework based on 5-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)isophthalate acid has a crystallographically identifiable disordered framework without open N-donor sites. The framework provides a unique example for investigating the effect of pore disorder on gas sorption that can be systematically evaluated. It exhibits remarkable temperature-dependent hysteretic CO2 sorption up to room temperature, and shows selectivity of CO2 over H2, CH4 and N2 at ambient temperature. The unique property of the framework is its disordered structure featuring distorted 1D tubular channels and DMF-guest-remediated defects. The results imply that structural disorder (defects) may play an important role in the modification of the performance of the material.

In Situ Spectroscopy of Calcium Fluoride Anchored Metal-Organic Framework Thin Films during Gas Sorption.

Project description:Surface-mounted metal-organic frameworks (SURMOFs) show promising behavior for a manifold of applications. As MOF thin films are often unsuitable for conventional characterization techniques, understanding their advantageous properties over their bulk counterparts presents a great analytical challenge. In this work, we demonstrate that MOFs can be grown on calcium fluoride (CaF2 ) windows after proper functionalization. As CaF2 is optically (in the IR and UV/Vis range of the spectrum) transparent, this makes it possible to study SURMOFs using conventional spectroscopic tools typically used during catalysis or gas sorption. Hence, we have measured HKUST-1 during the adsorption of CO and NO. We show that no copper oxide impurities are observed and also confirm that SURMOFs grown by a layer-by-layer (LbL) approach possess Cu+ species in paddlewheel confirmation, but 1.9 times less than in bulk HKUST-1. The developed methodology paves the way for studying the interaction of any adsorbed gases with thin films, not limited to MOFs, low temperatures, or these specific probe molecules, pushing the boundaries of our current understanding of functional porous materials.

Dramatic Enhancement of Rare-Earth Metal-Organic Framework Stability Via Metal Cluster Fluorination.

Project description:Rare-earth polynuclear metal-organic frameworks (RE-MOFs) have demonstrated high durability for caustic acid gas adsorption and separation based on gas adsorption to the metal clusters. The metal clusters in the RE-MOFs traditionally contain RE metals bound by μ3-OH groups connected via organic linkers. Recent studies have suggested that these hydroxyl groups could be replaced by fluorine atoms during synthesis that includes a fluorine-containing modulator. Here, a combined modeling and experimental study was undertaken to elucidate the role of metal cluster fluorination on the thermodynamic stability, structure, and gas adsorption properties of RE-MOFs. Through systematic density-functional theory calculations, fluorinated clusters were found to be thermodynamically more stable than hydroxylated clusters by up to 8-16 kJ/mol per atom for 100% fluorination. The extent of fluorination in the metal clusters was validated through a 19F NMR characterization of 2,5-dihydroxyterepthalic acid (Y-DOBDC) MOF synthesized with a fluorine-containing modulator. 19F magic-angle spinning NMR identified two primary peaks in the isotropic chemical shift (δiso) spectra located at -64.2 and -69.6 ppm, matching calculated 19F NMR δiso peaks at -63.0 and -70.0 ppm for fluorinated systems. Calculations also indicate that fluorination of the Y-DOBDC MOF had negligible effects on the acid gas (SO2, NO2, H2O) binding energies, which decreased by only ∼4 kJ/mol for the 100% fluorinated structure relative to the hydroxylated structure. Additionally, fluorination did not change the relative gas binding strengths (SO2 > H2O > NO2). Therefore, for the first time the presence of fluorine in the metal clusters was found to significantly stabilize RE-MOFs without changing their acid-gas adsorption properties.

Entrapment of metal clusters in metal-organic framework channels by extended hooks anchored at open metal sites.

Project description:Reported here are the new concept of utilizing open metal sites (OMSs) for architectural pore design and its practical implementation. Specifically, it is shown here that OMSs can be used to run extended hooks (isonicotinates in this work) from the framework walls to the channel centers to effect the capture of single metal ions or clusters, with the concurrent partitioning of the large channel spaces into multiple domains, alteration of the host-guest charge relationship and associated guest-exchange properties, and transfer of OMSs from the walls to the channel centers. The concept of the extended hook, demonstrated here in the multicomponent dual-metal and dual-ligand system, should be generally applicable to a range of framework types.

Enhanced elastic stability of a topologically disordered crystalline metal-organic framework.

Project description:By virtue of their open network structures and low densities, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are soft materials that exhibit elastic instabilities at low applied stresses. The conventional strategy for improving elastic stability is to increase the connectivity of the underlying MOF network, which necessarily increases the material density and reduces the porosity. Here we demonstrate an alternative paradigm, whereby elastic stability is enhanced in a MOF with an aperiodic network topology. We use a combination of variable-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements and coarse-grained lattice-dynamical calculations to interrogate the high-pressure behaviour of the topologically aperiodic system TRUMOF-1, which we compare against that of its ordered congener MOF-5. We show that the topology of the former quenches the elastic instability responsible for pressure-induced framework collapse in the latter, much as irregularity in the shapes and sizes of stones acts to prevent cooperative mechanical failure in drystone walls. Our results establish aperiodicity as a counter-intuitive design motif in engineering the mechanical properties of framework structures that is relevant to MOFs and larger-scale architectures alike.

Temperature-dependent molecular sieving of fluorinated propane/propylene mixtures by a flexible-robust metal-organic framework.

Project description:The electronics industry necessitates highly selective adsorption separation of hexafluoropropylene (C3F6) from perfluoropropane (C3F8), which poses a challenge due to their similar physiochemical properties. In this work, we present a microporous flexible-robust metal-organic framework (Ca-tcpb) with thermoregulatory gate opening, a rare phenomenon that allows tunable sieving of C3F8/C3F6. Remarkably, the temperature-dependent adsorption behavior enhances the discrimination between the larger C3F8 and the smaller C3F6, resulting in unprecedented C3F6/C3F8 selectivity (over 10,000) compared to other well-known porous materials at an optimal temperature (298 K). Dynamic breakthrough experiments demonstrate that high-purity C3F8 (over 99.999%) could be obtained from a C3F6/C3F8 (10:90) mixture under ambient conditions. The unique attributes of this material encompass exceptional adsorption selectivity, remarkable structural stability, and outstanding separation performance, positioning it as a highly promising candidate for C3F6/C3F8 separation. Single-crystal structural analysis of C3F6-loaded Ca-tcpb and theoretical calculations elucidate the host-guest interaction via multiple intermolecular interactions.
