Simple and Environmentally Friendly Fabrication of Superhydrophobic Alkyl Ketene Dimer Coated MALDI Concentration Plates.

ABSTRACT: Here we present a method to manufacture peptide-concentrating MALDI-plates with alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) as a new superhydrophobic coating. The fabrication of the hydrophobic plates included application of AKD by airbrush, and negative contact printing to generate the concentration sites. Deposited sample droplets were contained within the prestructured sites, and self-adjusted onto the site if slightly misplaced. No AKD contamination was observed, and the plates could easily be cleaned and regenerated. The S/N values for four model peptides was about twice as high compared with a standard steel plate and a commercial concentration plate. Graphical Abstract ᅟ.

An Environmentally Friendly Approach for the Fabrication of Conductive Superhydrophobic Coatings with Sandwich-Like Structures.

Project description:A large amount of research has been devoted to developing novel superhydrophobic coatings. However, it is still a great challenge to pursuean environmentally friendly method that leads to superhydrophobic coatings. Herein, we demonstrate for the first time, an environmentally friendly method for the preparation of conductive superhydrophobic coatings with sandwich-like structures by using aminoethylaminopropyl polydimethylsiloxane modified waterborne polyurethane (SiWPU) and N-octadecylamine functionalized multi-wall carbon nanotubes. These environmentally friendly coatings with the sheet resistance of 1.1 ± 0.1 kΩ/sq exhibit a high apparent contact angle of 158.1° ± 2° and a low sliding angle below 1°. The influence of the surface texture before and after heat treatment on the wetting properties is discussed. In addition, the coatings can be electrically heated by 3~113 °C with a voltage of 12~72 V, and thus, can be used for deicing. Furthermore, the resulting coatings demonstrate good performance of wear resistance and ultraviolet resistance, which will have broad application potential in harsh environments.

Preparation of Water-Based Alkyl Ketene Dimer (AKD) Nanoparticles and Their Use in Superhydrophobic Treatments of Value-Added Teakwood Products.

Project description:A process for preparing emulsions of alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) nanoparticles via a nanoemulsion template (emulsion/evaporation) method has been developed. The effects of types and contents of stabilizing agents, i.e., anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS), cationic (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB), amphoteric (phosphatidylcholine, PC), and polymeric (poly(vinyl alcohol), PVA), on the colloidal stability and hydrodynamic size of the AKD nanoparticles are investigated. The use of 0.1 wt % anionic SDS as a stabilizer generates nanoparticles with high stability and the smallest average size of 148 ± 5 nm. The environmentally friendly water-based emulsion prepared without halogenated compounds and harsh organic solvents is then applied to enhance the hydrophobicity of teakwood products by a simple dipping process. The properties and structures of the resulting treated woods are examined by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and water contact angle (WCA) measurements. The treated woods show superhydrophobicity with a WCA value of 150 ± 2°, as the emulsion generates a hydrophobic layer covering the wood surfaces due to the β-ketoester bond formation and the arrangement of AKD hydrophobic tails. The nanosized nanoparticles can penetrate the dense structure of the teakwood and form similar bonding for up to a 0.8 mm depth, generating a protective water-repellent layer in the wood structure. The emulsion has high potential for use in the commercial production of value-added teakwood products, with excellent water-resistant properties and high dimensional instability, without altering their physical appearances.

Catalytic performance of PVP-coated CuO nanosheets under environmentally friendly conditions.

Project description:Aromatic nitro compounds are an increasing concern worldwide due to their potential toxicity, prompting a quest for efficient removal approaches. This study established a simple and environmentally friendly method to synthesize a highly efficient, recoverable and stable CuO nanosheets catalyst to overcome public health and environmental problems caused by nitro aromatic compounds. In the current research, the effect of different concentrations of copper nitrate on the size and shape of CuO nanostructures in the chemical synthesis was studied. The CuO nanosheets were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry. It was found that at concentrations of 0.07 M and 0.1 M of copper nitrate, pure CuO was formed. The FTIR results showed that carbonyl group in PVP coordinated with CuO and formed a protective layer. The as-synthesized CuO nanosheets with an average width of 60 ± 23 nm and length of 579 ± 154 were used as a catalyst for highly selective and efficient reduction of aromatic nitro and aromatic carboxylic acid to the corresponding amine and alcohol compounds. The reduction reaction was monitored by either UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy or high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). 4-Nitrophenol and 4-nitroaniline were reduced to corresponding amine compounds within 12 min and 6 min, respectively in the presence of a reasonable amount of catalyst and reducing agent. The CuO nanosheets also exhibited excellent stability. The catalyst can be reused without loss of its activity after ten runs.

Analysis of Spotty Deposits on Fine Paper and Investigation of Key Factors Affecting Alkyl Ketene Dimer Spot Formation.

Project description:Defect spots degrade paper quality and often cause sheet breaks and other problems in the subsequent coating process. We encountered sporadic surges of defect spots on paper from a paper machine producing printing and writing grades of paper. We found that white or light-colored filler spots and waxy, translucent, elliptical spots accounted for 27.3 and 34.4% of these defects, respectively, and that both types of defect contained unhydrolyzed AKD as a major component. Paper machine's wet-end deposits, however, did not contain unhydrolyzed AKD as a deposit component. We hypothesized that the colloidal stability of AKD was the main factor causing the increase in spot defects, and we verified this by deposit testing experiments. Among the papermaking additives tested, bentonite caused the most significant increase in AKD deposition during testing, which was attributed to its causing the electrostatic coagulation of cationically charged AKD emulsion particles. In contrast, anionically charged AKD emulsions showed improved stability and less deposit formation in the presence of bentonite.

Cost-Effective, Highly Selective and Environmentally Friendly Superhydrophobic Absorbent from Cigarette Filters for Oil Spillage Clean up.

Project description:Ecological and environmental damage caused by oil spillage has attracted great attention. Used cigarette filters (CF) have also caused negative environmental consequences. Converting CF to economical materials is a feasible way to address these problems. In this study, we demonstrate a simple method for production of a highly hydrophobic absorbent from CF. CF was modified by using different volume ratios of octadecyltrichlorosilane and methyltrimethoxysilane. When the volume ratio was 3:2, the modified CF had the high water contact angle of 155°. It could selectively and completely absorb silicone oil from an oil-water mixture and showed a good absorption capacity of 38.3 g/g. The absorbed oil was readily and rapidly recovered by simple mechanical squeezing, and it could be reused immediately without any additional treatments. The as-obtained superhydrophobic modified CF retained an absorption capacity of 80% for pump oil and 82% for silicone oil after 10 cycles. The modified CF showed good elasticity in the test of repeated use. The present study provides novel design of a functional material for development of hydrophobic absorbents from used CF via a facile method toward oil spillage cleanup, as well as a new recycling method of CF to alleviate environmental impacts.

Facile fabrication of zinc oxide coated superhydrophobic and superoleophilic meshes for efficient oil/water separation.

Project description:Zinc oxide (ZnO) coated superhydrophobic and superoleophilic stainless steel meshes are facilely fabricated via chemical immersion growth and subsequent surface modification. The as-prepared meshes show good mechanical durability, chemical stability and corrosion-resistant properties due to a combination of the hierarchical ZnO structure and the low surface energy modification. More importantly, the as-prepared meshes are used for highly efficient separation of various oil/water mixtures. Meanwhile, a new oil skimmer based on the as-prepared mesh is proposed to spontaneously collect floating oil with high separation efficiency and desirable durability.

UV/Vis Spectrometry-Based Analysis of Alkyl Ketene Dimer (AKD) Retention to Solve the Waxy Spot Problem in the Papermaking Process.

Project description:A sudden surge in the number of translucent and oval-shaped waxy spots caused a serious production loss of the papermaking process. The investigation of the spots revealed that the alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) sizing agent caused the waxy spot problem. A ultraviolet/visible (UV/vis) spectrometry method for the quantitative analysis of AKD was developed and used to reduce the waxy spot problem in paper products. The results showed that the method could be used to quantify AKD in both papermaking stock and white water. The major factors in the papermaking wet end that were associated with the waxy spot problem were evaluated, and practical approaches to solving the AKD retention problem and the waxy spot problem were proposed and implemented. The dosage of a retention aid was found to be the principal factor controlling AKD retention. However, varying the retention aid dosage resulted in the deterioration of the paper formation; therefore, this was not a suitable solution to the waxy spot problem. The type of fixing agent and AKD used was found to be the secondary factor affecting the AKD retention and papermaking system cleanliness. Mill trials were conducted on a paper machine to examine the effects of different fixing agents and AKD types on AKD retention and the waxy spot count at the reel. This approach identified a combination of fixing agent and AKD type that substantially improved AKD retention and reduced the formation of translucent waxy spots in the resulting paper products.

Evaluation of Micro- and Nano-Bismuth(III) Oxide Coated Fabric for Environmentally Friendly X-Ray Shielding Materials.

Project description:This research focuses on the development of environmentally friendly textile-based shielding composites, from micro-sized and nanosized Bi2O3 particles, against ionizing radiation. Polyester fabric dyne-coated with either micro- or nano-Bi2O3 particles shields some X-rays but the effectiveness is poor. With only ∼58% uptake of micro-sized Bi2O3 particles dyeing on polyester fabric, the insufficient amount of Bi2O3 leaded to the low density of particles, resulting in only 30% of X-ray shielding at 80 kVp. Cotton fabric coated with either micro- or nano-Bi2O3/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composites, on the other hand, demonstrated the capacity to attenuate X-ray generated by high diagnostic X-ray tube voltages of 70-100 kVp, in compliance with medical protection requirements. The X-ray attenuation performance of cotton fabric coated with either micro-Bi2O3/PVA or nano-Bi2O3/PVA nanocomposite decreased progressively with increasing tube acceleration voltages, however their ionizing radiation-shielding performance enhanced with the number of fabric layers. Interestingly, for all X-ray tube voltages evaluated, the micro-Bi2O3/PVA composite outperformed the nano- Bi2O3/PVA composite in terms of X-ray shielding. At a weight ratio of 66.7% Bi2O3, 10 layers of cotton fabric coated with micro- Bi2O3/PVA composite can attenuate 90, 85, and 80% of X-ray photons at 70, 80, and 100 kVp, respectively. As a result, these less harmful X-ray shielding materials have the potential to replace lead-based composites, which are highly toxic to human health and have negative environmental consequences.

Environmentally Friendly Fertilizers Based on Starch Superabsorbents.

Project description:Superabsorbents starches (SASs) were synthesized and characterized starting from native corn starch, bitter cassava and sweet cassava by graft copolymerization with itaconic acid. Additionally, their swelling behavior was studied both in water and in buffer solutions with different pHs and saline solutions. Their applicability was tested as environmentally friendly fertilizers in the absorption and release of urea, potassium nitrate and ammonium nitrate at different concentrations of fertilizers. The values of swelling at the equilibrium (H∞) in water and different media of the graft copolymers demonstrated their superabsorbent capacity, polyelectrolyte behavior, and smart response to environmental stimuli. The percentage of fertilizer absorbed and released from the SASs was a function of the initial concentration of the fertilizer in the medium. The loading and release of SASs were depended on the initial concentration of the fertilizer in the medium as well as the nature, structure, and morphology of the starch used.

Creation of Environmentally Friendly Super "Dinitrotoluene Scavenger" Plants.

Project description:Pervasive environmental contamination due to the uncontrolled dispersal of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT) represents a substantial global health risk, demanding urgent intervention for the removal of this detrimental compound from affected sites and the promotion of ecological restoration. Conventional methodologies, however, are energy-intensive, susceptible to secondary pollution, and may inadvertently increase carbon emissions. In this study, a 2,4-DNT degradation module is designed, assembled, and validated in rice plants. Consequently, the modified rice plants acquire the ability to counteract the phytotoxicity of 2,4-DNT. The most significant finding of this study is that these modified rice plants can completely degrade 2,4-DNT into innocuous substances and subsequently introduce them into the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Further, research reveals that the modified rice plants enable the rapid phytoremediation of 2,4-DNT-contaminated soil. This innovative, eco-friendly phytoremediation approach for dinitrotoluene-contaminated soil and water demonstrates significant potential across diverse regions, substantially contributing to carbon neutrality and sustainable development objectives by repurposing carbon and energy from organic contaminants.
