Universal mechanism for hybrid percolation transitions.

ABSTRACT: Hybrid percolation transitions (HPTs) induced by cascading processes have been observed in diverse complex systems such as k-core percolation, breakdown on interdependent networks and cooperative epidemic spreading models. Here we present the microscopic universal mechanism underlying those HPTs. We show that the discontinuity in the order parameter results from two steps: a durable critical branching (CB) and an explosive, supercritical (SC) process, the latter resulting from large loops inevitably present in finite size samples. In a random network of N nodes at the transition the CB process persists for O(N ^1/3) time and the remaining nodes become vulnerable, which are then activated in the short SC process. This crossover mechanism and scaling behavior are universal for different HPT systems. Our result implies that the crossover time O(N ^1/3) is a golden time, during which one needs to take actions to control and prevent the formation of a macroscopic cascade, e.g., a pandemic outbreak.

Percolation-based precursors of transitions in extended systems.

Project description:Abrupt transitions are ubiquitous in the dynamics of complex systems. Finding precursors, i.e. early indicators of their arrival, is fundamental in many areas of science ranging from electrical engineering to climate. However, obtaining warnings of an approaching transition well in advance remains an elusive task. Here we show that a functional network, constructed from spatial correlations of the system's time series, experiences a percolation transition way before the actual system reaches a bifurcation point due to the collective phenomena leading to the global change. Concepts from percolation theory are then used to introduce early warning precursors that anticipate the system's tipping point. We illustrate the generality and versatility of our percolation-based framework with model systems experiencing different types of bifurcations and with Sea Surface Temperature time series associated to El Niño phenomenon.

Generalized models for bond percolation transitions of associative polymers.

Project description:Polymers with stickers-and-spacers architectures can drive phase-separation-aided bond percolation transitions. Here, we present a generalized mean-field model to enable the calculation of bond percolation thresholds for polymers with multiple types of stickers. Further, using graph-based Monte Carlo simulations we demonstrate how cooperativity in bond formation can give rise to reentrant phase behavior. When combined with recent advances for modeling phase separation, our approaches for calculating percolation lines could be useful for modeling hardening transitions for multivalent proteins.

Two Types of Discontinuous Percolation Transitions in Cluster Merging Processes.

Project description:Percolation is a paradigmatic model in disordered systems and has been applied to various natural phenomena. The percolation transition is known as one of the most robust continuous transitions. However, recent extensive studies have revealed that a few models exhibit a discontinuous percolation transition (DPT) in cluster merging processes. Unlike the case of continuous transitions, understanding the nature of discontinuous phase transitions requires a detailed study of the system at hand, which has not been undertaken yet for DPTs. Here we examine the cluster size distribution immediately before an abrupt increase in the order parameter of DPT models and find that DPTs induced by cluster merging kinetics can be classified into two types. Moreover, the type of DPT can be determined by the key characteristic of whether the cluster kinetic rule is homogeneous with respect to the cluster sizes. We also establish the necessary conditions for each type of DPT, which can be used effectively when the discontinuity of the order parameter is ambiguous, as in the explosive percolation model.

Rigidity percolation uncovers a structural basis for embryonic tissue phase transitions.

Project description:Embryo morphogenesis is impacted by dynamic changes in tissue material properties, which have been proposed to occur via processes akin to phase transitions (PTs). Here, we show that rigidity percolation provides a simple and robust theoretical framework to predict material/structural PTs of embryonic tissues from local cell connectivity. By using percolation theory, combined with directly monitoring dynamic changes in tissue rheology and cell contact mechanics, we demonstrate that the zebrafish blastoderm undergoes a genuine rigidity PT, brought about by a small reduction in adhesion-dependent cell connectivity below a critical value. We quantitatively predict and experimentally verify hallmarks of PTs, including power-law exponents and associated discontinuities of macroscopic observables. Finally, we show that this uniform PT depends on blastoderm cells undergoing meta-synchronous divisions causing random and, consequently, uniform changes in cell connectivity. Collectively, our theoretical and experimental findings reveal the structural basis of material PTs in an organismal context.

Universal cold RNA phase transitions.

Project description:RNA's diversity of structures and functions impacts all life forms since primordia. We use calorimetric force spectroscopy to investigate RNA folding landscapes in previously unexplored low-temperature conditions. We find that Watson-Crick RNA hairpins, the most basic secondary structure elements, undergo a glass-like transition below [Formula: see text]C where the heat capacity abruptly changes and the RNA folds into a diversity of misfolded structures. We hypothesize that an altered RNA biochemistry, determined by sequence-independent ribose-water interactions, outweighs sequence-dependent base pairing. The ubiquitous ribose-water interactions lead to universal RNA phase transitions below TG, such as maximum stability at [Formula: see text]C where water density is maximum, and cold denaturation at [Formula: see text]C. RNA cold biochemistry may have a profound impact on RNA function and evolution.

Emergence of superconductivity in the cuprates via a universal percolation process.

Project description:A pivotal step toward understanding unconventional superconductors would be to decipher how superconductivity emerges from the unusual normal state. In the cuprates, traces of superconducting pairing appear above the macroscopic transition temperature Tc, yet extensive investigation has led to disparate conclusions. The main difficulty has been to separate superconducting contributions from complex normal-state behaviour. Here we avoid this problem by measuring nonlinear conductivity, an observable that is zero in the normal state. We uncover for several representative cuprates that the nonlinear conductivity vanishes exponentially above Tc, both with temperature and magnetic field, and exhibits temperature-scaling characterized by a universal scale Ξ0. Attempts to model the response with standard Ginzburg-Landau theory are systematically unsuccessful. Instead, our findings are captured by a simple percolation model that also explains other properties of the cuprates. We thus resolve a long-standing conundrum by showing that the superconducting precursor in the cuprates is strongly affected by intrinsic inhomogeneity.

Mechanism modeling and application of Salvia miltiorrhiza percolation process.

Project description:Percolation is a common extraction method of food processing industry. In this work, taking the percolation extraction of salvianolic acid B from Salvia miltiorrhiza (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) as an example, the percolation mechanism model was derived. The volume partition coefficient was calculated according to the impregnation. experiment. The bed layer voidage was measured by single-factor percolation experiment and the internal mass transfer coefficient was calculated by the parameters obtained by fitting the impregnation kinetic model. After screening, the Wilson and Geankoplis, and Koch and Brady formulas were used to calculate the external mass transfer coefficient and the axial diffusion coefficient, respectively. After substituting each parameter into the model, the process of percolation of Salvia miltiorrhiza was predicted, and the coefficient of determination R2 was all greater than 0.94. Sensitivity analysis was used to show that all the parameters studied had a significant impact on the prediction effect. Based on the model, the design space including the range of raw material properties and process parameters was established and successfully verified. At the same time, the model was applied to the quantitative extraction and endpoint prediction of the percolation process.

Universal Critical Behaviours in Non-Hermitian Phase Transitions.

Project description:Quantum phase transitions occur in non-Hermitian systems. In this work we show that density functional theory, for the first time, uncovers universal critical behaviors for quantum phase transitions and quantum entanglement in non-Hermitian many-body systems. To be specific, we first prove that the non-degenerate steady state of a non-Hermitian quantum many body system is a universal function of the first derivative of the steady state energy with respect to the control parameter. This finding has far-reaching consequences for non-Hermitian systems. First, it bridges the non-analytic behavior of physical observable and no-analytic behavior of steady state energy, which explains why the quantum phase transitions in non-Hermitian systems occur for finite systems. Second, it predicts universal scaling behaviors of any physical observable at non-Hermitian phase transition point with scaling exponent being (1 - 1/p) with p being the number of coalesced states at the exceptional point. Third, it reveals that quantum entanglement in non-Hermitian phase transition point presents universal scaling behaviors with critical exponents being (1 - 1/p). These results uncover universal critical behaviors in non-Hermitian phase transitions and provide profound connections between entanglement and phase transition in non-Hermitian quantum many-body physics.

Universal Phase Transitions of AlB2-Type Transition-Metal Diborides.

Project description:High-pressure phase transitions of AlB2-type transition-metal diborides (TMB2; TM = Zr, Sc, Ti, Nb, and Y) were systematically investigated using first-principles calculations. Upon subjecting to pressure, these TMB2 compounds underwent universal phase transitions from an AlB2-type to a new high-pressure phase tP6 structure. The analysis of the atomistic mechanism suggests that the tP6 phases result from atomic layer folds of the AlB2-type parent phases under pressure. Stability studies indicate that the tP6-structured ZrB2, ScB2, and NbB2 are stable and may be observed under high pressure and the tP6-structured TiB2 phase may be recovered at ambient pressure.

Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy on Hybrid Graphene/Gold Substrates near the Percolation Threshold.

Project description:Graphene is a promising platform for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-active substrates, primarily due to the possibility of quenching photoluminescence and fluorescence. Here we study ultrathin gold films near the percolation threshold fabricated by electron-beam deposition on monolayer CVD graphene. The advantages of such hybrid graphene/gold substrates for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy are discussed in comparison with conventional substrates without the graphene layer. The percolation threshold is determined by independent measurements of the sheet resistance and effective dielectric constant by spectroscopic ellipsometry. The surface morphology of the ultrathin gold films is analyzed by the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the thicknesses of the films in addition to the quartz-crystal mass-thickness sensor are also measured by AFM. We experimentally demonstrate that the maximum SERS signal is observed near and slightly below the percolation threshold. In this case, the region of maximum enhancement of the SERS signal can be determined using the figure of merit (FOM), which is the ratio of the real and imaginary parts of the effective dielectric permittivity of the films. SERS measurements on hybrid graphene/gold substrates with the dye Crystal Violet show an enhancement factor of ~105 and also demonstrate the ability of graphene to quench photoluminescence by an average of ~60%.
