Five new species of Syzygium (Myrtaceae) from Sulawesi, Indonesia.

ABSTRACT: Following ongoing ecological research on the tree diversity of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, we describe five new species of Syzygium. These are the first descriptions of Syzygium species from the island since Blume (1850, Jambosa celebica and J. cornifolia), highlighting the significant lack of taxonomic research on the genus for the region. The five species proposed as new are Syzygium balgooyisp. nov., Syzygium contiguumsp. nov., Syzygium devogeliisp. nov., Syzygium eymaesp. nov., and Syzygium galanthumsp. nov. All species are illustrated and information on their distribution, ecology, and conservation status is given.

A new species of Muscicapa flycatcher from Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Project description:The Indonesian island of Sulawesi, a globally important hotspot of avian endemism, has been relatively poorly studied ornithologically, to the extent that several new bird species from the region have been described to science only recently, and others have been observed and photographed, but never before collected or named to science. One of these is a new species of Muscicapa flycatcher that has been observed on several occasions since 1997. We collected two specimens in Central Sulawesi in 2012, and based on a combination of morphological, vocal and genetic characters, we describe the new species herein, more than 15 years after the first observations. The new species is superficially similar to the highly migratory, boreal-breeding Gray-streaked Flycatcher Muscicapa griseisticta, which winters in Sulawesi; however, the new species differs strongly from M. griseisticta in several morphological characters, song, and mtDNA. Based on mtDNA, the new species is only distantly related to M. griseisticta, instead being a member of the M. dauurica clade. The new species is evidently widely distributed in lowland and submontane forest throughout Sulawesi. This wide distribution coupled with the species' apparent tolerance of disturbed habitats suggests it is not currently threatened with extinction.

Three new "caecate" earthworm species from Sulawesi, Indonesia (Oligochaeta, Megascolecidae).

Project description:Three new earthworm species are described from Sulawesi, Indonesia. Two belong to the genus Pithemera Sims & Easton, 1972, namely P.suwastikai Fahri, Amaliah & Atmowidi, sp. n. and P.tadulako Fahri, Amaliah & Atmowidi, sp. n. The new species, P.suwastikai sp. n. is distinguished by a medium size (135-165 mm long, 4.5-6.5 mm diameter), four pairs of spermathecal pores in 5/6/7/8/9, 7-12 setae between male pores, no genital markings, holandry, and simple intestinal caeca. Pithemeratadulako sp. n. is recognized by a large size (217-340 mm long, 13-15 mm diameter), two pairs of spermathecal pores in 7/8/9, no setae between male pores, no genital markings, holandry, and simple intestinal caeca. Another new species, Metaphirerusydii Fahri, Amaliah & Nguyen, sp. n., is diagnosed by its large size (250-280 mm long,12-16 mm diameter), two pairs of spermathecal pores in 7/8/9, no setae between male porophores, presence of genital markings in the male region, holandry, and complex intestinal caeca. Additionally, an identification key to "caecate" species is provided to the Sulawesi's fauna.

Five new species of Rhodamnia (Myrtaceae, Myrteae) from New Guinea.

Project description:Five new species of Rhodamnia are proposed for New Guinea, including Rhodamnia asekiensis, Rhodamnia daymanensis, Rhodamnia makumak, Rhodamnia taratot, and Rhodamnia waigeoensis. Rhodamnia sharpeana, known previously only in Australia, is reported for the first time for Papua New Guinea. Detailed species descriptions and associated taxonomic data are provided for all species. A key is provided for species of Rhodamnia with stellate trichomes. Given the overall paucity of collections, all species are tentatively assigned as Data Deficient following IUCN conservation recommendations.

A new species of terrestrially-nesting fanged frog (Anura: Dicroglossidae) from Sulawesi Island, Indonesia.

Project description:Herein, we describe a new species of terrestrially-nesting fanged frog from Sulawesi Island, Indonesia. Though male nest attendance and terrestrial egg deposition is known in one other Sulawesi fanged frog (Limnonectes arathooni), the new species exhibits a derived reproductive mode unique to the Sulawesi assemblage; male frogs guard one or more clutches of eggs festooned to leaves or mossy boulders one to two meters above small slow-moving streams, trickles, or seeps. This island endemic has thus far been collected at three sites on Sulawesi: one in the Central Core of the island, and two on the Southwest Peninsula-south of the Tempe Depression (a major biogeographical boundary). The new Limnonectes has the smallest adult body size among its Sulawesi congeners-with a maximum snout-vent length of about 30 millimeters. Beyond its unique reproductive behavior and body size, the species is further diagnosed on the basis of advertisement call and genetic distance from sympatric fanged frogs. The discovery and description of the new species highlights the remarkable reproductive trait diversity that characterizes the Sulawesi fanged frog assemblage despite that most species in this radiation have yet to be formally described.

Two new species of Tmethypocoelis Koelbel, 1897 (Decapoda, Brachyura, Dotillidae) from Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Project description:Tmethypocoelis Koelbel, 1897, is a central Indo-West Pacific genus of small intertidal, soft sediment dotillid crabs that includes five recognised species. Two new species, Tmethypocoelissimplexsp. nov. and T.celebensissp. nov., are here described from Sulawesi, Indonesia. Tmethypocoelissimplexsp. nov. is found on the west coast of Central Sulawesi, while T.celebensissp. nov. occurs in the north-eastern part of Sulawesi. Both new species differ from each other and known congeners by the male cheliped, male pleon, and male first gonopod characters. The differences in gastric mill morphology further confirm the two species as new. The distinct water current patterns in the Makassar Strait and the Maluku Channel might have contributed to the evolution of these two sibling species.

Lepteroscapha pallens Achard, 1921 is designated as the type species of the genus Lepteroscapha Achard, 1921.

Baseline reef health surveys at Bangka Island (North Sulawesi, Indonesia) reveal new threats.

Project description:Worldwide coral reef decline appears to be accompanied by an increase in the spread of hard coral diseases. However, whether this is the result of increased direct and indirect human disturbances and/or an increase in natural stresses remains poorly understood. The provision of baseline surveys for monitoring coral health status lays the foundations to assess the effects of any such anthropogenic and/or natural effects on reefs. Therefore, the objectives of this present study were to provide a coral health baseline in a poorly studied area, and to investigate possible correlations between coral health and the level of anthropogenic and natural disturbances. During the survey period, we recorded 20 different types of coral diseases and other compromised health statuses. The most abundant were cases of coral bleaching, followed by skeletal deformations caused by pyrgomatid barnacles, damage caused by fish bites, general pigmentation response and galls caused by cryptochirid crabs. Instances of colonies affected by skeletal eroding bands, and sedimentation damage increased in correlation to the level of bio-chemical disturbance and/or proximity to villages. Moreover, galls caused by cryptochirid crabs appeared more abundant at sites affected by blast fishing and close to a newly opened metal mine. Interestingly, in the investigated area the percentage of corals showing signs of 'common' diseases such as black band disease, brown band disease, white syndrome and skeletal eroding band disease were relatively low. Nevertheless, the relatively high occurrence of less common signs of compromised coral-related reef health, including the aggressive overgrowth by sponges, deserves further investigation. Although diseases appear relatively low at the current time, this area may be at the tipping point and an increase in activities such as mining may irredeemably compromise reef health.

The complete plastome of Syzygium odoratum (Lour.) DC. 1928 (Myrtaceae).

Project description:Syzygium odoratum (Lour.) DC. 1828 is a deciduous shrub in the family Myrtaceae. This species grows in sparse forests, especially in mountains, valleys, and broad-leaved evergreen forests along streams from 100 to 400 m above sea level. The primary distribution is in southern China (e.g. Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, etc.) and other south Asian countries (e.g. Vietnam). Here, we report and characterize the complete plastome from a cultivar of S. odoratum (Lour.) DC. 1828. The complete plastome is 159,352 bp in length with a typical structure and gene content found in angiosperms, including two inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 26,472 bp, a large single-copy (LSC) region of 87,993 bp, and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,415 bp. The plastome contains 132 genes, consisting of 84 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. The overall G/C content in the plastome of S. odoratum is 36.9%. By inferring phylogenetic relationships based on the existing data of related taxa, we find that S. odoratum is most closely related to Syzygium acuminatissimum, (Blume) DC. 1828 given the current sampling. The complete plastome sequence of S. odoratum will provide a useful resource for conservation genetics of this species, as well as for phylogenetic studies involving Myrtaceae.

Complete chloroplast genome sequence of the rose apple, Syzygium jambos (Myrtaceae).

Project description:Plants in the genus Syzygium have been widely used as traditional medicine, fruit crops, and ornamental trees. In this study, we reported the complete chloroplast genome of Syzygium jambos (L.) Alston which was known as rose apple. The chloroplast genome of this species is 158541 bp in length, including a pair of inverted repeat regions (IRs) (26076 bp) that is divided by a large single copy area (LSC) (88036 bp) and a small single copy area (SSC) (18353 bp). The circular chloroplast genome of S. jambos contains 132 unique genes, composing of 85 protein-coding genes, 39 tRNA genes and 8 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that S. jambos is clustered with species in genus Syzygium. This complete chloroplast genome of S. jambos will provide a powerful tool to accelerate breeding, biotechnological and phylogenetic study.
