Stretching Micro Metal Particles into Uniformly Dispersed and Sized Nanoparticles in Polymer.

ABSTRACT: There is a longstanding challenge to disperse metal nanoparticles uniformly in bulk polymers for widespread applications. Conventional scale-down techniques often are only able to shrink larger elements (such as microparticles and microfibers) into micro/nano-elements (i.e. nanoparticles and nanofibers) without much altering their relative spatial and size distributions. Here we show an unusual phenomenon that tin (Sn) microparticles with both poor size distribution and spatial dispersion were stretched into uniformly dispersed and sized Sn nanoparticles in polyethersulfone (PES) through a stack and draw technique in thermal drawing. It is believed that the capillary instability plays a crucial role during thermal drawing. This novel, inexpensive, and scalable method overcomes the longstanding challenge to produce bulk polymer-metal nanocomposites (PMNCs) with a uniform dispersion of metallic nano-elements.

Nano-sized and micro-sized polystyrene particles affect phagocyte function.

Project description:Adverse effect of nanoparticles may include impairment of phagocyte function. To identify the effect of nanoparticle size on uptake, cytotoxicity, chemotaxis, cytokine secretion, phagocytosis, oxidative burst, nitric oxide production and myeloperoxidase release, leukocytes isolated from human peripheral blood, monocytes and macrophages were studied. Carboxyl polystyrene (CPS) particles in sizes between 20 and 1,000 nm served as model particles. Twenty nanometers CPS particles were taken up passively, while larger CPS particles entered cells actively and passively. Twenty nanometers CPS were cytotoxic to all phagocytes, ≥500 nm CPS particles only to macrophages. Twenty nanometers CPS particles stimulated IL-8 secretion in human monocytes and induced oxidative burst in monocytes. Five hundred nanometers and 1,000 nm CPS particles stimulated IL-6 and IL-8 secretion in monocytes and macrophages, chemotaxis towards a chemotactic stimulus of monocytes and phagocytosis of bacteria by macrophages and provoked an oxidative burst of granulocytes. At very high concentrations, CPS particles of 20 and 500 nm stimulated myeloperoxidase release of granulocytes and nitric oxide generation in macrophages. Cytotoxic effect could contribute to some of the observed effects. In the absence of cytotoxicity, 500 and 1,000 nm CPS particles appear to influence phagocyte function to a greater extent than particles in other sizes.

Fabrication of ZnO Nanoparticles Modified by Uniformly Dispersed Ag Nanoparticles: Enhancement of Gas Sensing Performance.

Project description:Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles modified with uniformly dispersed silver (Ag) nanoparticles (Ag-ZnO) were prepared in one step by calcining precursor electrospun nanofibers. The molar ratios of Ag to Zn in the precursor solutions were 0, 1, 3, and 5%. The microstructure of the Ag-ZnO sensor was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The existence of metallic Ag was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the gas sensing properties of Ag-ZnO were investigated. The results showed that the ZnO nanoparticles after Ag nanoparticles modification exhibited excellent gas sensing performance to ethanol and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The optimal working temperature of the Ag-ZnO sensor significantly decreased for ethanol compared with pure ZnO. The 3% Ag-ZnO sensor exhibited the fastest response to ethanol with the response/recovery times of only 5 and 9 s, respectively. However, all the Ag-ZnO-based gas sensors showed a high response value to H2S, especially the 3% Ag-ZnO gas sensor exhibited a maximum response value of 298 at 10 ppm H2S. These results could be attributed to the spillover effect and electron sensitization effect of Ag nanoparticles, which led to more absorbed oxygen species and active sites, and thereby can further enhance the gas sensing performances of ZnO-based gas sensors.

Assembly Control at a Low Peclet Number in Ultracentrifugation for Uniformly Sized Nanoparticles.

Project description:The intrinsic high diffusion rate of colloids at low Péclet number results in an extremely fast crystallization process and instant formation of colloidal crystals, even at an ultracentrifugal field of extremely high intensity. By introducing a small number of clusters in sedimention, it should be possible to slow down the crystallization process, thus making the assembly order tunable in preparative ultracentrifugation experiments. Here, we used sodium dodecyl sulfate-stabilized polystyrene nanoparticles (with a size dispersity of 1.07) dispersed in a solution of high ionic strength. Sedimentation and assembly of these nanoparticles were done using preparative ultracentrifugation at various angular velocities. The sedimentation process was also analyzed in situ by analytical ultracentrifugation in real time. By creating as low as 3% of clusters into these nearly uniformly sized polystyrene nanoparticle dispersions during the sedimentation process, the superstructure order becomes easily tunable between glassy and crystalline. Theoretical calculations complemented the experiments to explain the mechanism of cluster formation in sedimentation. This work provides a novel methodology to produce superstructures with a tunable packing order for colloids at low Péclet number.

Nano-Dispersed Ziegler-Natta Catalysts for 1 μm-Sized Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Particles.

Project description:A catalytic approach to synthesize microfine ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) particles was proposed based on the exploitation of nano-sized catalysts. By utilizing MgO nanoparticles as a core material, a Ziegler-Natta-type MgO/MgCl2/TiCl4 core-shell catalyst with the particle size in a nano-range scale was prepared in a simple preparation step. The organic modification of MgO surfaces prior to catalyzation prevented agglomeration and facilitated the full dispersion of catalyst particles at a primary particle level for the first time. The nano-dispersed catalysts successfully afforded a direct access to UHMWPE having the particle size in the range of 1-2 μm at a reasonable activity. Extremely fine polymer particles yielded several advantages, especially at a significantly lower fusion temperature in compression molding.

Uniformly dispersed platinum-cobalt alloy nanoparticles with stable compositions on carbon substrates for methanol oxidation reaction.

Project description:Alloying platinum (Pt) with suitable transition metals is effective way to enhance their catalytic performance for methanol oxidation reaction, and reduce their cost at mean time. Herein, we report our investigation on the synthesis of bimetallic platinum-cobalt (PtCo) alloy nanoparticles, their activation, as well as the catalytic evaluation for methanol oxidation reaction. The strategy starts with the synthesis of PtCo alloy nanoparticles in an organic medium, followed by loading on carbon substrates. We then remove the capping agent by refluxing the carbon-supported PtCo particles in acetic acid before electrochemical measurements. We emphasize the change in composition of the alloys during refluxing process, and the initial PtCo alloys with Pt/Co ratio of 1/2 turns into stable alloys with Pt/Co ratio of 3/1. The final Pt3Co particles have uniform distribution on carbon substrates, and exhibit activity with 2.4 and 1.5 times of that for commercial Pt/C and PtRu/C for methanol oxidation reaction.

Effects of serum on cytotoxicity of nano- and micro-sized ZnO particles.

Project description:Although an increasing number of in vitro studies are being published regarding the cytotoxicity of nanomaterials, the components of the media for toxicity assays have often varied according to the needs of the scientists. Our aim for this study was to evaluate the influence of serum-in this case, fetal bovine serum-in a cell culture medium on the toxicity of nano-sized (50-70 nm) and micro-sized (<1 μm) ZnO on human lung epithelial cells (A549). The nano- and micro-sized ZnO both exhibited their highest toxicity when exposed to serum-free media, in contrast to exposure in media containing 5 or 10 % serum. This mainly comes not only from the fact that ZnO particles in the serum-free media have a higher dosage-per-cell ratio, which results from large aggregates of particles, rapid sedimentation, absence of protein protection, and lower cell growth rate, but also that extracellular Zn2+ release contributes to cytotoxicity. Although more extracellular Zn2+ release was observed in serum-containing media, it did not contribute to nano-ZnO cytotoxicity. Furthermore, non-dissolved particles underwent size-dependent particle agglomeration, resulting in size-dependent toxicity in both serum-containing and serum-free media. A low correlation between cytotoxicity and inflammation endpoints in the serum-free medium suggested that some signaling pathways were changed or induced. Since cell growth, transcription behavior for protein production, and physicochemical properties of ZnO particles all were altered in serum-free media, we recommend the use of a serum-containing medium when evaluating the cytotoxicity of NPs.

Silicone Resin Coating of Micro-Sized Ferrite Particles Using Supercritical Carbon Dioxide.

Project description:An environmentally friendly and efficient polymer coating method for micro-sized particles was developed using supercritical CO2. Because this method used supercritical CO2 as the solvent to dissolve the coating material, we avoided environmental pollution from organic solvents, saved the energy required to evaporate/remove organic solvents, realized a uniform coating film on the fine particles, and prevented agglomeration of the coating particles. The solubilities of the five silicone resins used as coating materials were measured using the flow method, and the data were well correlated by Chrastil's equation with an average deviation of 5.7%. Resins comprising numerous methyl-group side chains exhibited high solubilities and were suitable coating materials. A new semi-flow-type coating method using supercritical CO2 was also developed, which deposited a film with a uniform thickness of 0.2-1.3 μm on whole fine particles. Notably, in this method, the film thickness was easily controlled. A simple and rapid technique was developed for measuring the coating thickness using X-ray fluorescence analysis. The model for calculating the coating film thickness was based on the material balance of the coating material. This model satisfactorily predicted the thickness with an average error of 0.085 μm by measuring the solubility of the coating material in supercritical CO2, integrated flow volume of supercritical CO2, particle diameter, density and charged weight of the fine particle, and coating material density.

Synthesis of Uniformly Sized Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3.0 Nanoparticles via Mechanochemical Process and Wet-Milling for Reduced Thermal Conductivity.

Project description:In this study, Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3.0 (BST) nanoparticles (NPs) with high crystallinities were synthesized via a mechanochemical process (MCP). X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra of the BST NPs showed that the Bi, Sb, and Te powders successfully formed BiSbTe phase and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, verifying the high crystallinity and smaller size, albeit agglomerated. The as-synthesized BST NPs with agglomerated clusters were ground into smaller sizes of approximately 41.8 nm with uniform distribution through a simple wet-milling process during 7 days. The thermal conduction behaviors of bulk alloys fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) of the BST NPs were studied by comparing those of samples fabricated from as-synthesized BST NPs and a BST ingot. The thermal conductivities (κ) of the BST nanocomposites were significantly reduced by introducing BST NPs with smaller grain sizes and finer distributions in the temperature range from 300 to 500 K. The BST nanocomposites fabricated from wet-milled BST NPs offered ultralow κ values of 0.84 W m-1 K-1 at approximately 398 K.

Uniformly dispersed platinum nanoparticles over nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide as an efficient electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction.

Project description:Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with efficient activity and stability is significant for fuel cells. Herein, platinum (Pt) nanoparticles dispersed on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO) were prepared by a hydrothermal and carbonized approach for the electrocatalysis of ORR. Polyvinylpyrrolidone plays a significant role in the reduction and dispersion of platinum particles (about 2 nm). The obtained Pt-N-rGO hybrids exhibited superior activity with an electron transfer number of ∼4.0, onset potential 0.90 eV of ORR, good stability and methanol tolerance in alkaline media. These results reveal the interactions between Pt-N-rGO and oxygen molecules, which may represent an oxygen modified growth in catalyst preparation. The excellent electrocatalysis may lead to the decreased consumption of expensive Pt and open up new opportunities for applications in lithium air batteries.
