Semenovia gyirongensis (Apiaceae), a new species from Xizang, China.

ABSTRACT: Based on morphology and molecular data, a new species Semenovia gyirongensis Q.Y.Xiao & X.J.He, from Gyirong County, Xizang, China, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically most similar to S. malcolmii (Hemsley & Pearson) Pimenov, but differs in its cylindric much-branched root, intensively branching long underground caudex with distinct nodes, narrowly ovate to ovate terminal leaf lobes, oblong bracts with obtuse-rounded or cuneate apex.

The complete chloroplast genome of Semenovia thomsonii (Tordylieae: Apiaceae), a new record from Xizang, China.

Project description:Semenovia thomsonii is a perennial herb native to India. In this study, we assembled and annotated the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of a specimen collected from Xizang, China, using whole genome next-generation sequencing. The cp genome is circular in structure and 147,137 bp in length, consisting of one large single-copy (LSC) region of 92,885 bp, one small single-copy (SSC) region of 17,448 bp, and a pair of inverted repeat regions of 36,804 bp. The overall GC content of the genome is 37.6%. The cp genome was predicted to contain 129 genes, including 85 protein-coding, 36 tRNA, and eight rRNA. Phylogenetic analysis of S. thomsonii and 21 cp genomes in the Apiaceae fully resolved S. thomsonii in a clade with S. gyirongensis, and S. transiliensis. These genetic data represent the first confirmed report of S. thomsonii from Xizang, China and provide useful information to the phylogenetic history of the genus Semenovia.

This new species belongs to Vacciniumsect.Calcicolus and is morphologically most similar to V.dunalianum, but differs in having yellowish-brown tomentose young branches, petioles and inflorescence rachis, leaf blades with 2-3(-4) pairs of secondary veins, usually all basal and with fine veins impressed adaxially and urceolate to spherical corollas.

Mazusmotuoensis (Mazaceae), a new species from Xizang, China.

Project description:Mazusmotuoensis W.B.Ju, Bo Xu bis & X.F.Gao is a newly described species found in Xizang Autonomous Region, China. Morphologically, this species differs from all the other known Mazus species by having erect perennial herb form with a rhizome, presence of multicellular hairs, without basal leaves, opposite arrangement of stem leaves, and corolla lobes with erose-toothed margins. Molecular phylogenetic analysis using nuclear and cpDNA genes suggests that this new species occupies a basal position within Mazus. In conclusion, both morphological evidence and molecular phylogenetic analyses support that this species belongs to Mazus and represents an as-yet-unreported new species with distinct differences from other species within the genus.

Pipermotuoense, a new species of Piperaceae from Xizang, China.

Project description:Pipermotuoense X.W.Qin, F.Su & C.Y.Hao, a new species of Piperaceae from Xizang, China, is described and illustrated in this paper. The new species resembles P.yinkiangense and P.anisotis, but it can be readily distinguished from the compared species by several characteristics. Gonophyll leaves are chartaceous and the leaf secondary vein count is 7-9, with the outermost pair being very weak when there are nine veins. Additionally, the apical pair arises 2-4 cm above the base and the leaf base is asymmetrical, with bilateral petioles that cling and heal together. Pistillate floral bracts are sessile, with 3, 4 or 5 stigmas. The description of the new species includes photographs, detailed descriptions, notes on etymology, distribution and habitat, as well as comparisons with morphologically similar species.

Cyclorhizapuana (Apiaceae), a new species from Sichuan, China.

Project description:A new species, Cyclorhizapuana J. Zhou & Z.W. Liu (Apiaceae) from Sichuan Province of China, is described and illustrated here. Morphological comparisons with congeneric species revealed that it is distinguished by its slender habit, sparse annular scars, 4-pinnatisect leaf blade with ultimate segments linear (2-4×0.5-1 mm), subequal rays, oblong fruits with slightly thickened ribs, obconic stylopodium and slightly concave seed face. A molecular analysis based on nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences indicated that C.puana is genetically distinct from the other two species of the genus. A distribution map, as well as an updated key, are provided for the species of Cyclorhiza.

Hanseniatrifoliolata, a new species (Apiaceae) from Shaanxi, China.

Project description:Hanseniatrifoliolata Q.P.Jiang & X.J.He (Apiaceae), is described as new from Shaanxi Province, northwest China. The mericarp features of H.trifoliolata resemble H.himalayensis and H.phaea and molecular phylogenetic analyses (combining ITS and plastid genomes data) suggest that H.trifoliolata is closely related to the group formed by H.oviformis and H.forbesii. The new species H.trifoliolata has unique 3-foliolate leaves and differ from other Hansenia species in its leaves, umbel numbers and size. A comprehensive description of H.trifoliolata is provided, including habitat environment and detailed morphological traits.

Of these, the genera Caelestomorpha Solovyev & Witt, 2009 and Mummu Solovyev & Witt, 2009 are new to China; the female of the genus Euphlyctina Hering, 1931 is illustrated and described in this paper for the first time.

Phalaenopsismedogensis (Orchidaceae, Epidendroideae, Vandeae), a new species from Xizang, China.

Project description:A new species of Orchidaceae, Phalaenopsismedogensis, from Motuo, Xizang, is described and illustrated based on morphological characters and molecular phylogenetics analysis. Molecular phylogenetic analysis and morphological characters indicate that P.medogensis is close to P.deliciosa, P.gibbosa and P.lobbii, but differs from them by having triangular wings on the column foot, rhombic lip mid-lobe with a fleshy-horned appendage at the base, and concave lip lateral lobes, the lower part white with a deep purplish-red spot and hairy, the upper part pale yellow with dense rust spots.

Project description:Three new species of the ant-loving beetle tribe Batrisini, Reitter, 1882 (Pselaphinae: Batrisitae) from southeast Xizang, China are described: Arthromelodeslhunzensis sp. nov., Tribasoditesliangi sp. nov., and Tribasoditesyumaicus sp. nov. Illustrations of the habitus and diagnostic features of these species are provided to aid identification. With these additions, the number of batrisine species known from Xizang increases to 83.
