Influenza D Virus in Animal Species in Guangdong Province, Southern China.

ABSTRACT: Molecular tests revealed influenza D viruses of D/OK lineage widely circulating in farmed animal species in Guangdong Province, southern China. In particular, we found high levels of influenza D virus infection in goats and pigs. We also detected viral RNA in serum specimens and feces of animals with certain severe diseases.

Isolation and Genetic Characterization of Emerging H3N2 Canine Influenza Virus in Guangdong Province, Southern China, 2018-2021.

Project description:H3N2 canine influenza virus (CIV) emerged in dogs in China or Korea around 2005 and was first reported in 2008. In 2015, H3N2 CIV was detected in the United States and caused a huge outbreak. To date, H3N2 CIV is continuously circulating in dog populations in China, Korea, and the United States. For continuous monitoring of H3N2 CIV in China, we collected 180 dog nasal swab samples and 196 cat nasal swabs from veterinary hospitals in Guangdong Province between 2018 and 2021. Six emerging H3N2 CIV strains were isolated. Following full genome sequencing and phylogenetic analyses, we found that A/canine/Guangdong/1-3/2018 and A/canine/Guangdong/1-3/2021 diverged from the reported sequences of the Chinese H3N2 CIV strains. Moreover, we found that these H3N2 CIV strains belong to the group that contains US and northern China CIV strains in 2017 and 2019 and dominate in the dog population until 2021.

Project description:In 2022, we assessed avian influenza A virus subtype H5N6 seroprevalence among the general population in Guangdong Province, China, amid rising numbers of human infections. Among the tested samples, we found 1 to be seropositive, suggesting that the virus poses a low but present risk to the general population.

Molecular epidemiology of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 in Guangdong province of southern China.

Project description:BackgroundAlthough the outbreak of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in Guangdong has been documented for more than a decade, the molecular characteristics of such a regional HIV-1 epidemic remained unknown.Methodology/principal findingsBy sequencing of HIV-1 pol/env genes and phylogenetic analysis, we performed a molecular epidemiologic study in a representative subset (n ?=?200) of the 508 HIV-1-seropositive individuals followed up at the center for HIV/AIDS care and treatment of Guangzhou Hospital of Infectious Diseases. Of 157 samples (54.1% heterosexual acquired adults, 20.4% needle-sharing drug users, 5.7% receivers of blood transfusion, 1.3% men who have sex with men, and 18.5% remained unknown) with successful sequencing for both pol and env genes, 105 (66.9%) HIV-1 subtype CRF01_AE and 24 (15.3%) CRF07_BC, 9 (5.7%) B', 5 (3.2%) CRF08_BC, 5 (3.2%) B, 1 (0.6%) C, 3 (1.9%) CRF02_AG, and 5 (3.2%) inter-region recombinants were identified within pol/env sequences. Thirteen (8.3%) samples (3 naïves, 6 and 5 received with antiretroviral treatment [ART] 1-21 weeks and ?24 weeks respectively) showed mutations conferring resistance to nucleoside/nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors or protease inhibitors. Among 63 ART-naïve patients, 3 (4.8%) showed single or multiple drug resistant mutations. Phylogenetic analysis showed 8 small clusters (2-3 sequences/cluster) with only 17 (10.8%) sequences involved.Conclusion/significanceThis study confirms that sexual transmission with dominant CRF01_AE strain is a major risk for current HIV-1 outbreak in the Guangdong's general population. The transmission with drug-resistant variants is starting to emerge in this region.

Family clusters of avian influenza A H7N9 virus infection in Guangdong Province, China.

Project description:Since its first identification, the epizootic avian influenza A H7N9 virus has continued to cause infections in China. Two waves were observed during this outbreak. No cases were reported from Guangdong Province during the first wave, but this province became one of the prime outbreak sites during the second wave. In order to identify the transmission potential of this continuously evolving infectious virus, our research group monitored all clusters of H7N9 infections during the second wave of the epidemic in Guangdong Province. Epidemiological, clinical, and virological data on these patients were collected and analyzed. Three family clusters including six cases of H7N9 infection were recorded. The virus caused severe disease in two adult patients but only mild symptoms for all four pediatric patients. All patients reported direct poultry or poultry market exposure history. Relevant environment samples collected according to their reported exposures tested H7N9 positive. Virus isolates from patients in the same cluster shared high sequence similarities. In conclusion, although continually evolving, the currently circulating H7N9 viruses in Guangdong Province have not yet demonstrated the capacity for efficient and sustained person-to-person transmission.

Third Wave of Influenza A(H7N9) Virus from Poultry, Guangdong Province, China, 2014-2015.

Project description:Fourteen influenza A(H7N9) viruses were isolated from poultry or the environment in live poultry markets in Guangdong Province, China during 2014-2015. Phylogenetic analysis showed that all viruses were descended from viruses of the second wave of influenza A(H7N9) virus infections during 2013. These viruses can be divided into 2 branches.

Evidence for subclinical influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus infection among dogs in Guangdong Province, China.

Project description:During 2012, we identified sampled dogs with elevated levels of antibodies (?1:40) against A(H1N1)pdm09 virus by using a hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay (seroprevalence, 24.7%) and a microneutralization (MN) assay (seroprevalence, 10.8%). These high seroprevalences of A(H1N1)pdm09 among dogs without clinical signs of influenza support the premise that dogs may play a role in the human influenza ecology in China.

Bambusicolous <i>Arthrinium</i> Species in Guangdong Province, China.

Project description:A survey of bambusicolous fungi in Bijiashan Mountain Park, Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China, revealed several Arthrinium-like taxa from dead sheaths, twigs, and clumps of Bambusa species. Phylogenetic relationships were investigated based on morphology and combined analyses of the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS), large subunit nuclear ribosomal DNA (LSU), beta tubulin (β-tubulin), and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef 1-α) gene sequences. Based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic data, Arthrinium acutiapicum sp. nov. and Arthrinium pseudorasikravindrae sp. nov. are introduced herein with descriptions and illustrations. Additionally, two new locality records of Arthrinium bambusae and Arthrinium guizhouense are described and illustrated.

Molecular Epidemiology and Hematologic Characterization of Thalassemia in Guangdong Province, Southern China.

Project description:Introduction: About 2% of the population in the world are carriers of the thalassemia gene. Thalassemia is highly prevalent in Southern China, and traditional clinical testing methods would cause missed diagnosis of partial static thalassemia. Here, we reviewed and summarized a set of simple and clinically feasible thalassemia detection protocols adopted by the Prenatal Diagnosis and Reproductive Center of our hospital. Methods: From January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2020, 31 512 peripheral blood samples and 3828 prenatal samples were collected in our study. All the peripheral blood samples were performed through thalassemia screening by routine blood tests and hemoglobin electrophoresis and gene detection. The prenatal diagnosis would be implemented for the fetus if the parents were carriers of the same type of thalassemia. Results: A total of 6137 (19.48%) cases were diagnosed as thalassemia, in which 4749 (15.07%) were α-thalassemia, 1196 (3.80%) were β-thalassemia and 192 (0.61%) were co-inheritance of α- and β-thalassemia. For prenatal samples, 3160 (82.55%) cases were diagnosed as thalassemia, in which 2021 (52.80%) were α-thalassemia, 997 (26.05%) were β-thalassemia and 142 (3.71%) were co-inheritance of α- and β-thalassemia. In addition, we also found five novel mutations, including NC_000016.9:g.223681-227492del3812; HBA1: c.301-31_301-24delCTCGGCCCinsG; HBA2: c.95+7C>T for α-thalassemia and HBB: c.263_276delCACTGAGTGAGCTG; HBB: c.315+143G>A for β-thalassemia. Conclusion: The present study updates the epidemiological characteristics and mutation spectrum of thalassemia in Southern China and demonstrated five novel mutations. Our research provides a reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment, prenatal diagnosis, or reproductive genetic counseling for patients with thalassemia in Guangdong.

Description of A New Species of the Gudgeon Genus Microphysogobio Mori 1934 (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae) from Guangdong Province, Southern China.

Project description:Shih-Pin Huang, I-Shiung Chen, Yahui Zhao, and Kwang-Tsao Shao (2018) Microphysogobio luhensis n. sp., a new cyprinid species, is described from the Rongjiang River in eastern Guangdong Province, China. Morphological characters and molecular evidence based on mitochondrial DNA Cytochrome b (Cyt b) and Cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences were used to compare this new species with other related species from mainland China, Vietnam and Taiwan. The present molecular evidences revealed that this new species is closely related to M. kachekensis and M. yunnanensis. However, these three species can be well distinguished based on the number of small pearl-like papillae on their inside papillae, lip papillae shape, barbel length, barbel width and color pattern. Furthermore, the morphometric comparison between M. kachekensis and the poorly known species M. yunnanensis is also discussed in this study for the first time. In addition, a diagnostic key to all 14 valid species of Microphysogobio from southern mainland China, Hainan Island and Taiwan is also provided.
