Spin diffusion from an inhomogeneous quench in an integrable system.

ABSTRACT: Generalized hydrodynamics predicts universal ballistic transport in integrable lattice systems when prepared in generic inhomogeneous initial states. However, the ballistic contribution to transport can vanish in systems with additional discrete symmetries. Here we perform large scale numerical simulations of spin dynamics in the anisotropic Heisenberg XXZ spin 1/2 chain starting from an inhomogeneous mixed initial state which is symmetric with respect to a combination of spin reversal and spatial reflection. In the isotropic and easy-axis regimes we find non-ballistic spin transport which we analyse in detail in terms of scaling exponents of the transported magnetization and scaling profiles of the spin density. While in the easy-axis regime we find accurate evidence of normal diffusion, the spin transport in the isotropic case is clearly super-diffusive, with the scaling exponent very close to 2/3, but with universal scaling dynamics which obeys the diffusion equation in nonlinearly scaled time.

Nuclear spin diffusion in the central spin system of a GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dot.

Project description:The spin diffusion concept provides a classical description of a purely quantum-mechanical evolution in inhomogeneously polarized many-body systems such as nuclear spin lattices. The central spin of a localized electron alters nuclear spin diffusion in a way that is still poorly understood. Here, spin diffusion in a single GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dot is witnessed in the most direct manner from oscillatory spin relaxation dynamics. Electron spin is found to accelerate nuclear spin relaxation, from which we conclude that the long-discussed concept of a Knight-field-gradient diffusion barrier does not apply to GaAs epitaxial quantum dots. Our experiments distinguish between non-diffusion relaxation and spin diffusion, allowing us to conclude that diffusion is accelerated by the central electron spin. Such acceleration is observed up to unexpectedly high magnetic fields - we propose electron spin-flip fluctuations as an explanation. Diffusion-limited nuclear spin lifetimes range between 1 and 10 s, which is sufficiently long for quantum information storage and processing.

Superoxide free radical spin-lattice relaxivity: A quench-assisted MR study.

Project description:PurposeQuEnch-assiSTed (QUEST) MRI provides a unique biomarker of excessive production of paramagnetic free radicals (oxidative stress) in vivo. The contribution from superoxide, a common upstream species found in oxidative stress-based disease, to the QUEST metric is unclear. Here, we begin to address this question by measuring superoxide spin-lattice relaxivity (r1) in phantoms.MethodsStable superoxide free radicals were generated in water phantoms of potassium superoxide ( KO2) . To measure r1, 1/T1 of different concentration solutions of KO2 in the presence and absence of the antioxidant superoxide dismutase were measured. The 1/T1 confounding factors including acquisition sequence, pH, and water source were also evaluated.ResultsThe T1 -weighted signal intensity increased with KO2 concentration. No contribution from pH, or reaction products other than superoxide, noted on 1/T1 . Superoxide r1 was measured to be 0.29 mM-1 s-1 , in agreement with that reported for paramagnetic molecular oxygen and nitroxide free radicals.ConclusionOur first-in-kind measurement of superoxide free radical r1 suggests a detection sensitivity of QUEST MRI on the order of tens of μM, within the reported level of free radical production during oxidative stress in vivo. Similar studies for other common free radicals are needed.

Ballistic transport and boundary resistances in inhomogeneous quantum spin chains.

Project description:Transport phenomena are central to physics, and transport in the many-body and fully-quantum regime is attracting an increasing amount of attention. It has been recently revealed that some quantum spin chains support ballistic transport of excitations at all energies. However, when joining two semi-infinite ballistic parts, such as the XX and XXZ spin-1/2 models, our understanding suddenly becomes less established. Employing a matrix-product-state ansatz of the wavefunction, we study the relaxation dynamics in this latter case. Here we show that it takes place inside a light cone, within which two qualitatively different regions coexist: an inner one with a strong tendency towards thermalization, and an outer one supporting ballistic transport. We comment on the possibility that even at infinite time the system supports stationary currents and displays a non-zero Kapitza boundary resistance. Our study paves the way to the analysis of the interplay between transport, integrability, and local defects.

Photonic simulation of entanglement growth and engineering after a spin chain quench.

Project description:The time evolution of quantum many-body systems is one of the most important processes for benchmarking quantum simulators. The most curious feature of such dynamics is the growth of quantum entanglement to an amount proportional to the system size (volume law) even when interactions are local. This phenomenon has great ramifications for fundamental aspects, while its optimisation clearly has an impact on technology (e.g., for on-chip quantum networking). Here we use an integrated photonic chip with a circuit-based approach to simulate the dynamics of a spin chain and maximise the entanglement generation. The resulting entanglement is certified by constructing a second chip, which measures the entanglement between multiple distant pairs of simulated spins, as well as the block entanglement entropy. This is the first photonic simulation and optimisation of the extensive growth of entanglement in a spin chain, and opens up the use of photonic circuits for optimising quantum devices.

Spatial resolution versus data acquisition efficiency in mapping an inhomogeneous system with species diffusion.

Project description:Traditionally, spatially-resolved photoluminescence (PL) has been performed using a point-by-point scan mode with both excitation and detection occurring at the same spatial location. But with the availability of high quality detector arrays like CCDs, an imaging mode has become popular for performing spatially-resolved PL. By illuminating the entire area of interest and collecting the data simultaneously from all spatial locations, the measurement efficiency can be greatly improved. However, this new approach has proceeded under the implicit assumption of comparable spatial resolution. We show here that when carrier diffusion is present, the spatial resolution can actually differ substantially between the two modes, with the less efficient scan mode being far superior. We apply both techniques in investigation of defects in a GaAs epilayer - where isolated singlet and doublet dislocations can be identified. A superposition principle is developed for solving the diffusion equation to extract the intrinsic carrier diffusion length, which can be applied to a system with arbitrarily distributed defects. The understanding derived from this work is significant for a broad range of problems in physics and beyond (for instance biology) - whenever the dynamics of generation, diffusion, and annihilation of species can be probed with either measurement mode.

Experimental verification of generalized eigenstate thermalization hypothesis in an integrable system.

Project description:Identifying the general mechanics behind the equilibration of a complex isolated quantum system towards a state described by only a few parameters has been the focus of attention in non-equilibrium thermodynamics. And several experimentally unproven conjectures are proposed for the statistical description of quantum (non-)integrable models. The plausible eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH), which suggests that each energy eigenstate itself is thermal, plays a crucial role in understanding the quantum thermalization in non-integrable systems; it is commonly believed that it does not exist in integrable systems. Nevertheless, integrable systems can still relax to the generalized Gibbs ensemble. From a microscopic perspective, understanding the origin of this generalized thermalization that occurs in an isolated integrable system is a fundamental open question lacking experimental investigations. Herein, we experimentally investigated the spin subsystem relaxation in an isolated spin-orbit coupling quantum system. By applying the quantum state engineering technique, we initialized the system with various distribution widths in the mutual eigenbasis of the conserved quantities. Then, we compared the steady state of the spin subsystem reached in a long-time coherent dynamics to the prediction of a generalized version of ETH and the underlying mechanism of the generalized thermalization is experimentally verified for the first time. Our results facilitate understanding the origin of quantum statistical mechanics.

Optical spin noise spectra of Rb atomic gas with homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening.

Project description:We study the optical spin noise spectra of Rb atomic gas with different broadening mechanisms. The first is homogeneous broadening using 250 Torr nitrogen buffer gas, while the other mechanism is inhomogeneous broadening via the Doppler effect without buffer gas. Spin noise signals are measured by the typical spin noise spectroscopy geometry (single-pass geometry) and the saturated absorption spectroscopy geometry (double-pass geometry). In the homogeneously broadened system, the line shape of the optical spin noise spectra shows a pronounced dip that vanishes at the center of the band in both geometries. In the inhomogeneously broadened system, however, a peak in the single-pass geometry and a dip in the double-pass geometry at the band center are observed. The difference between the optical spin noise spectra from these two systems arises from their different level-broadening mechanisms.

Spatially inhomogeneous inverse Faraday effect provides tunable nonthermal excitation of exchange dominated spin waves.

Project description:We demonstrate optical nonthermal excitation of exchange dominated spin waves of different orders in a magnetophotonic crystal. The magnetophotonic structure consists of a thin magnetic film and a Bragg stack of nonmagnetic layers to provide a proper nonuniform interference pattern of the inverse Faraday effect induced by light in the magnetic layer. We found a phenomenon of the pronounced phase slippage of the inverse Faraday effect distribution when the pump wavelength is within the photonic band gap of the structure. It allows to tune the interference pattern by a slight variation of light wavelength which results in the modification of excitation efficiency of the different order spin waves. The approach can be applied for different magnetic dielectrics expanding their application horizons for spin-wave based devices.

High-efficiency and integrable DNA arithmetic and logic system based on strand displacement synthesis.

Project description:Powerful information processing and ubiquitous computing are crucial for all machines and living organisms. The Watson-Crick base-pairing principle endows DNA with excellent recognition and assembly abilities, which facilitates the design of DNA computers for achieving intelligent systems. However, current DNA computational systems are always constrained by poor integration efficiency, complicated device structures or limited computational functions. Here, we show a DNA arithmetic logic unit (ALU) consisting of elemental DNA logic gates using polymerase-mediated strand displacement. The use of an enzyme resulted in highly efficient logic gates suitable for multiple and cascaded computation. Based on our basic single-rail DNA configuration, additional combined logic gates (e.g., a full adder and a 4:1 multiplexer) have been constructed. Finally, we integrate the gates and assemble the crucial ALU. Our strategy provides a facile strategy for assembling a large-scale complex DNA computer system, highlighting the great potential for programming the molecular behaviors of complicated biosystems.
