Project description:Siblings play an important role in the behavioral trajectories of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). While having siblings has been associated with positive outcomes in ASD, including stronger adaptive functioning, social and non-verbal communication, and theory of mind, little is known about the impact of siblings on more negative outcomes, such as maladaptive behaviors. To address this gap, the present longitudinal study tested sibling predictors of trajectories of maladaptive behaviors (e.g., teacher- and parent-reported hyperactivity, irritability, and social withdrawal) from childhood through early adulthood among individuals with ASD and non-spectrum delays. Multilevel models revealed that, while the mere presence of a sibling did not impact maladaptive behavior trajectories apart from teacher-reported hyperactivity, the diagnostic profile of the sibling (e.g., emotional/behavioral disorder, ASD, medical condition) emerged as an important predictor. Specifically, although findings varied across teacher and parent reports, more hyperactivity and irritability across time was identified when the sibling had diagnoses of an emotional/behavioral disorder, ASD, and/or a medical condition. Overall, this study provides novel insight into the broader family-level factors that influence the presentation of maladaptive behaviors across time and across contexts.

Project description:ObjectivePrevious studies on developmental trajectories have used ad hoc definitions of oppositional defiant behaviors (ODB), which makes it difficult to compare results. This article defines developmental trajectories of ODB from ages 3-5 based on five different standard measurements derived from three separate instruments.MethodA sample of 622 three-year-old preschoolers, followed up at ages 4, 5, and 6, was assessed with the five measures of oppositionality answered by parents and teachers. Growth-Mixture-Modeling (GMM) estimated separate developmental trajectories for each ODB measure for ages 3 to 5.ResultsThe number of classes-trajectories obtained in each GMM depended on the ODB measure, but two clear patterns emerged: four trajectories (persistent low, decreasers, increasers/high increasers, persistent moderate/persistent high) or three trajectories (persistent low, decreasers, increasers/high increasers). Persistent high trajectories accounted for 4.4%-9.5% of the children. The trajectories emerging from the different ODB measures at ages 3 to 5 discriminated disruptive disorders, comorbidity, use of services, and impairment at age 6, and globally showed a similar pattern, summarizing longitudinal information on oppositionality in preschool children in a similar way.ConclusionsTrajectories resulting from standard scales of the questionnaires have predictive validity for identifying relevant clinical outcomes, but are measure-specific. The results contribute to knowledge about the development of ODB in preschool children.

Project description:ObjectiveLittle is known about the patterns among individuals in the long-term course of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs). The objective of this study was to identify developmental trajectories of STBs from adolescence through young adulthood, as well as risk and protective covariates, and nonsuicidal outcomes associated with these trajectories.MethodA total of 180 adolescents (ages 12-18 years at recruitment) were repeatedly assessed over an average of 13.6 years (2,273 assessments) since their psychiatric hospitalization. Trajectories were based on ratings of STBs at each assessment. Covariates included psychiatric risk factors (proportion of time in episodes of psychiatric disorders, hopelessness, trait anxiety, impulsivity, and aggression in adulthood, sexual and physical abuse, parental history of suicidal behavior), protective factors (survival and coping beliefs, social support in adulthood, parenthood), and nonsuicidal outcomes (social adjustment and functional impairment in adulthood, school drop-out, incarcerations).ResultsUsing a Bayesian group-based trajectory model, 4 trajectories of STBs were identified: an increasing risk class (11%); a highest overall risk class (12%); a decreasing risk class (33%); and a low risk class (44%). The 4 classes were associated with distinct patterns of correlates in risk and protective factors and nonsuicidal outcomes.ConclusionAdolescents and young adults have heterogeneous developmental trajectories of STBs. These trajectories and their covariates may inform strategies for predicting STBs and targeting interventions for individuals at risk for suicidal behavior.

Project description:Examining typical developmental trajectories of infant eating behaviors, correlates of those trajectories, and cross-lagged associations between eating behaviors and anthropometry, is important to understand the etiology of these behaviors and their relevance to growth early in the lifespan. Mothers (N = 276) completed the Baby Eating Behavior Questionnaire (BEBQ) and infant anthropometrics were measured at ages 1, 2, 4, 6, and 10 months. Infant and maternal characteristics were collected by maternal report. Trajectories of eating behaviors were identified using latent class growth modeling and bivariate analyses examined associations of infant eating behavior trajectory membership with infant and maternal characteristics. Cross-lagged analyses examined associations between BEBQ subscales and infant weight-for-length z-score. Infant eating behavior trajectories included: Consistently High (62%) and Consistently Moderate (38%) Enjoyment of Food; Consistently High (9%), Moderate & Decreasing (43%), and Low & Decreasing (48%) Food Responsiveness; and Consistently High (62%) and Moderate & Decreasing (38%) General Appetite. Trajectory group membership was not associated with infant sex, gestational age, birthweight, or having been exclusively fed breastmilk at 2 months. Consistently High trajectories for Enjoyment of Food, Food Responsiveness, and General Appetite were associated with maternal demographic markers of psychosocial risk (e.g., lower maternal age and educational attainment). Food Responsiveness and General Appetite tracked strongly across infancy within individuals. Cross-lagged associations of Enjoyment of Food, Food Responsiveness, and General Appetite with weight-for-length z-score across infancy were generally null. Much additional work is needed to understand eating behaviors in infancy, their development, and their etiology. Further understanding of infant eating behaviors will provide the basis for future interventions to improve life course nutrition, growth, and health.

Project description:Background and aimsBirth mode and other early life factors affect a newborn's microbial colonization with potential long-term health effects. Individual variations in early life gut microbiota development, especially their effects on the functional repertoire of microbiota, are still poorly characterized. This study aims to provide new insights into the gut microbiome developmental trajectories during the first year of life.MethodsOur study comprised 78 term infants sampled at 3 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months (n = 280 total samples), and their mothers were sampled in late pregnancy (n = 50). Fecal DNA was subjected to shotgun metagenomic sequencing. Infant samples were studied for taxonomic and functional maturation, and maternal microbiota was used as a reference. Hierarchical clustering on taxonomic profiles was used to identify the main microbiota developmental trajectories in the infants, and their associations with perinatal and postnatal factors were assessed.ResultsIn line with previous studies, infant microbiota composition showed increased alpha diversity and decreased beta diversity by age, converging toward an adult-like profile. However, we did not observe an increase in functional alpha diversity, which was stable and comparable with the mother samples throughout all the sampling points. Using a de novo clustering approach, two main infant microbiota clusters driven by Bacteroidaceae and Clostridiaceae emerged at each time point. The clusters were associated with birth mode and their functions differed mainly in terms of biosynthetic and carbohydrate degradation pathways, some of which consistently differed between the clusters for all the time points. The longitudinal analysis indicated three main microbiota developmental trajectories, with the majority of the infants retaining their characteristic cluster until 1 year. As many as 40% of vaginally delivered infants were grouped with infants delivered by C-section due to their clear and persistent depletion in Bacteroides. Intrapartum antibiotics, any perinatal or postnatal factors, maternal microbiota composition, or other maternal factors did not explain the depletion in Bacteroides in the subset of vaginally born infants.ConclusionOur study provides an enhanced understanding of the compositional and functional early life gut microbiota trajectories, opening avenues for investigating elusive causes that influence non-typical microbiota development.
