Silica precipitation potentially controls earthquake recurrence in seismogenic zones.

ABSTRACT: Silica precipitation is assumed to play a significant role in post-earthquake recovery of the mechanical and hydrological properties of seismogenic zones. However, the relationship between the widespread quartz veins around seismogenic zones and earthquake recurrence is poorly understood. Here we propose a novel model of quartz vein formation associated with fluid advection from host rocks and silica precipitation in a crack, in order to quantify the timescale of crack sealing. When applied to sets of extensional quartz veins around the Nobeoka Thrust of SW Japan, an ancient seismogenic splay fault, our model indicates that a fluid pressure drop of 10-25 MPa facilitates the formation of typical extensional quartz veins over a period of 6.6 × 10⁰-5.6 × 10¹ years, and that 89%-100% of porosity is recovered within ~3 × 10² years. The former and latter sealing timescales correspond to the extensional stress period (~3 × 10¹ years) and the recurrence interval of megaearthquakes in the Nankai Trough (~3 × 10² years), respectively. We therefore suggest that silica precipitation in the accretionary wedge controls the recurrence interval of large earthquakes in subduction zones.

Project description:Streams impacted by historic mining activity are characterized by acidic pH, unique microbial communities, and abundant metal-oxide precipitation, all of which can influence groundwater-surface water exchange. We investigate how metal-oxide precipitates and hyporheic mixing mediate the composition of microbial communities in two streams receiving acid-rock and mine drainage near Silverton, Colorado, USA. A large, neutral pH hyporheic zone facilitated the precipitation of metal particles/colloids in hyporheic porewaters. A small, low pH hyporheic zone, limited by the presence of a low-permeability, iron-oxyhydroxide layer known as ferricrete, led to the formation of steep geochemical gradients and high dissolved-metal concentrations. To determine how these two hyporheic systems influence microbiome composition, we installed well clusters and deployed in situ microcosms in each stream to sample porewaters and sediments for 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Results indicated that distinct hydrogeochemical conditions were present above and below the ferricrete in the low pH system. A positive feedback loop may be present in the low pH stream where microbially mediated precipitation of iron-oxides contributes to additional clogging of hyporheic pore spaces, separating abundant, iron-oxidizing bacteria (Gallionella spp.) above the ferricrete from rare, low-abundance bacteria below the ferricrete. Metal precipitates and colloids that formed in the neutral pH hyporheic zone were associated with a more diverse phylogenetic community of nonmotile, nutrient-cycling bacteria that may be transported through hyporheic pore spaces. In summary, biogeochemical conditions influence, and are influenced by, hyporheic mixing, which mediates the distribution of micro-organisms and, thus, the cycling of metals in streams receiving acid-rock and mine drainage.ImportanceIn streams receiving acid-rock and mine drainage, the abundant precipitation of iron minerals can alter how groundwater and surface water mix along streams (in what is known as the "hyporheic zone") and may shape the distribution of microbial communities. The findings presented here suggest that neutral pH streams with large, well-mixed hyporheic zones may harbor and transport diverse microorganisms attached to particles/colloids through hyporheic pore spaces. In acidic streams where metal oxides clog pore spaces and limit hyporheic exchange, iron-oxidizing bacteria may dominate and phylogenetic diversity becomes low. The abundance of iron-oxidizing bacteria in acid mine drainage streams has the potential to contribute to additional clogging of hyporheic pore spaces and the accumulation of toxic metals in the hyporheic zone. This research highlights the dynamic interplay between hydrology, geochemistry, and microbiology at the groundwater-surface water interface of acid mine drainage streams.

Project description:Simple plugging of the high-permeability "thief zones" of oil reservoirs is the most plausible and also the most straightforwardly achievable approach to enhance sweep efficiency and oil recovery. Sporosarcina pasteurii is a representative microorganism with the ability to precipitate calcium carbonate (CaCO3) via enzymatic hydrolysis of urea in the presence of calcium ions. Microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) can cement and seal the granular and fractured media and thus can be used as a potential microbial plugging agent for the high-permeability zones of oil reservoirs. The following investigated the microscopic characteristics of MICP plugging and its efficacy in permeability reduction. The columns of near-spherical silica sand and angular silica sand with three separate granularities (40/60, 60/80, and 80/120 mesh) were used as artificial rock cores representing distinct pore sizes and pore characteristics to investigate the efficacy and microprocess of MICP plugging with different biotreatment periods. The results indicated that permeability is reduced significantly after only short periods of biotreatment. After eight cycles of MICP treatments, the permeability for each type of cores dropped by 54-90% of individual initial permeabilities. The measured CaCO3 content indicated that the decreasing rate in permeability with the increasing CaCO3 content experiences three contrasting stages, namely, slow decline, speedy decline, and plateauing. X-ray diffraction indicated that most of the generated CaCO3 crystals occur as vaterite with only a small amount of calcite. Imaging by scanning electron microscopy further revealed the microprocess of MICP plugging. Microorganisms first concentrate on the pore wall to secrete CaCO3, forming a thin and large uniform layer of CaCO3. Then, some nucleation sites of CaCO3 crystals will experience further preferential growth, resulting in large, dominant crystals that act as a plugging agent within the pore space. Compared to extracellular polymeric substances, which are currently the primary microbial plugging agent used to enhance sweep efficiency of oil reservoirs, bio-CaCO3 appears more effective in plugging in terms of its morphology, size, and growth characteristics.
