Geoelectrical resistivity data sets for subsurface characterisation and aquifer delineation in Iyesi, southwestern Nigeria.

ABSTRACT: This article consists of geoelectrical resistivity data sets for thirty (30) vertical electrical sounding (VES) and four (4) traverses of 2D electrical resistivity imaging (ERI) collected within Iyesi, Ota, southwestern Nigeria for about five (5) weeks between December, 2016 and January, 2017 using an ABEM Terrameter (SAS1000/4000). The observed apparent resistivity data sets for the VES were processed using WinResist to obtain geoelectric layer parameters while those of the 2D ERI were processed with RES2DINV to obtain 2D inverse model resistivity images. The geoelectric parameters for the VES and the inverse models for the 2D ERI were integrated to characterise the subsurface and delineate the underlying aquifer units.

Project description:This article consists of data sets for thirty (30) vertical electrical sounding (VES) and four (4) traverses of 2D electrical resistivity imaging (ERI) collected within, Ado-Ekiti, southwestern Nigeria using an ABEM Terrameter (SAS 1000/4000) system. Win-Resist computer program was used to process the apparent resistivity data sets for the VES to determine the geoelectric layers and their respective parameters (resistivity and thickness). The observed data sets for the 2D ERI were processed using RES2DINV software to obtain 2D inverse model resistivity distribution of the subsurface. The resistivity soundings and the 2D ERI were combined to delineate and characterise the crystalline basement features associated with basement aquifers.

Project description:This article consists of data sets for five (5) traverses of 2D electrical resistivity imaging (ERI) collected in Abeokuta, southwestern Nigeria. ABEM Terrameter (SAS1000/4000) system and dipole-dipole array were used for the data collection. RES2DINV computer program was used to invert the observed apparent resistivity data to obtain 2D inverse model images of resistivity distribution of the subsurface. The 2D resistivity images were used to characterise the subsurface and delineate the crystalline basement features of hydrological importance in the area.

Geo-resistivity data set for groundwater aquifer exploration in the basement complex terrain of Nigeria, West Africa.

Project description:To delineate prolific groundwater aquifers in the basement complex terrain of Ilorin, Nigeria, West Africa, a carefully designed Electrical Resistivity Surveys were undertaken at eighty-five (85) stations using Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) technique with Schlumberger array. Data acquisition system comprised SAS 3000 ABEM Resistivity Meter, a D. C. battery, four metallic electrodes, electrical cables, portable Geographic Positioning System (GPS), hammers, measuring tapes, and other accessories. In addition to the resistivity data, the geographic coordinates of the survey points were measured for ease of geo-referencing of the exact points where the data were collected and for secondary use of the data. The data acquired were processed, analysed and interpreted using auxiliary curve matching techniques and computer iteration method. The results were used to: evaluate the subsurface in terms of the different geo-electric layers, their thicknesses, depths, and resistivities; evaluate the groundwater potential of the aquifer; identify suitable sites for locating boreholes for groundwater exploitation; and recommend depths to borehole bottom in the different parts of the study area. The data presented can be reused to determine the protective capacity of the overburden material against groundwater contamination; to determine the engineering-geophysics and geotechnical properties of the rocks for Civil Engineering applications; for predicting groundwater flow models; and for mineral exploration within the area. The data presented can be used with other geophysical and geological data acquired from the same area for a better evaluation of the subsurface for multipurpose applications.

Electrical resistivity survey data for potential aquifer in Banggi Island, Sabah, Malaysia.

Project description:The survey data on potential aquifer was collected at two sites located in Banggi Island (i.e. Laksian Primary School [LPS] and Padang Primary School [PPS]), Malaysia on 25 and 26 April 2013. Both locations are geologically surrounded by various types of lithologies, namely, sandstone, mudstone, siltstone, shale, chert, conglomerate, lignite, tuff, limestone, terrace sand, gravel and coral. The resistivity data consisted of six-line pole-dipole short arrays and were recorded in-situ using SAS 4000 ABEM Lund Imaging System, together with a relay switching unit (Electrode Selector ES 464), six multiconductor cables, steel rod electrodes and jumpers. The data, namely electrode spacing, depth of investigation, subsurface resistivity, type of material and horizontal data coverage were used to assess the characteristics of the potential aquifer. The recorded data were then processed using RES2DINV software to obtain 2-D inversion model of the subsurface. The data were also equipped with six models of inverse resistivity section for both areas. The data obtained can be used by the government and stakeholders for groundwater exploration and extraction in order to provide water supplies for local communities, especially since access to these resources from the surrounding water treatment plants on the island is limited.

Delineation of aquifer potential zones using hydraulic parameters in Gombe and environs, North-Eastern, Nigeria.

Project description:This research is aimed at delineating the groundwater potential zones in Gombe and environs using Dar Zarrouk parameters. The study area is located within longitudes 11°7'0″E to 11°14'0″E, and latitudes 10°15'0″N to 10°21'0″N, it is basically underlain by basement Complex rocks represented by Diorite and Granites, and Cretaceous sedimentary rocks represented by Bima, Yolde, Fika and Gombe Formations. Thirty two (32) vertical electric soundings (VES) using Schlumberger array method with the aid of ABEM Signal Averaging System (SAS) Terrameter was used for the data acquisition. The result of the interpretation shows four to six geo-electric layers. The geo-electric section revealed the major aquifers to be confined and semi confined and consist of Medium grain sandstones, with varying thicknesses. The aquifer hydraulic characteristics indicated that the transverse resistance, ranges from 235.2Ωm2 to 6317.87Ωm2 with an average value of 1789.50Ωm2. The Longitudinal conductance, S, ranges from 0.1415Ωm to 31.933Ωm with an average of 2.002Ωm. The Hydraulic conductivity value range from 2.62m/day to 138.66 m/day with a mean value of 20.662 m/day. The transmissivity values obtained for the various layers range from 78.34 m2/day to 13284.02m2/day, with the average value been 893.57 m2/day. Four groundwater potential zones were delineated including medium grain sandstones, Sandstones, clayey sand and shaly sand.

Molecular characterisation of genital human papillomavirus among women in Southwestern, Nigeria.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Persistent infections with high-risk genital Human papillomavirus (HPV) especially types 16 and 18, are associated with cervical cancer. However, distribution of HPV types varies greatly across geographical regions and the available vaccines target only few types. This study was designed to determine the HPV types circulating in Southwestern Nigeria, thereby providing necessary information for effective control of the virus. METHODS:Endocervical swab samples were collected from a total of 295 consenting women attending routine cervical cancer screening, STI clinics and community-based outreach programme. Viral DNA was extracted from the samples and the consensus region of the HPV DNA was amplified by PCR using GP-E6/E7 primers. Type-specific nested multiplex PCR and Sanger sequencing were used to genotype the HPV isolates. RESULTS:In this study, 51 (17.3%) individuals were positive for HPV DNA using consensus primers that target the E6/E7 genes but only 48 (16.3%) were genotyped. A total of 15 HPV types (HPV-6, 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 42, 43, 44, 52, 58, 66, 74, 81, 86) were detected, with HPV-31 being the most predominant (32.8%), followed by HPV-35 (17.2%) and HPV-16 (15.5%). Two rare HPV types; 74 and 86 were also detected. The HPV-74 isolate had three nucleotide (CCT) insertions at E7 gene that translated into amino acid proline. Highest nucleotide substitutions (n = 32) were found in HPV-44 genotype. Among positive individuals, 20.8% had dual infections and 86.2% had High-risk HPV types. CONCLUSIONS:Multiple Human papillomavirus types co-circulated in the study. Most of the circulating Human papillomavirus are high-risk type with type 31 being the most predominant. Although the implication of HPV-74 with proline insertion detected for the first time is unknown, it may have effect on the transformation potential of the virus. Polyvalent HPV vaccine will be more effective for the infection control in Nigeria.

Electrical resistivity imaging of an enhanced aquifer recharge site.

Project description:Enhanced aquifer recharge (EAR) is defined as any engineered structure or enhanced natural feature designed to convey stormwater, surface water or wastewater directly into an aquifer (e.g. aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) wells) or into the vadose zone eventually percolating to an aquifer (e.g. spreading basins, dry well, etc.; USEPA 2021). Identifying the storage and flow capabilities of complex aquifers can improve the efficacy of many conceptual site models (CSM) for sites considered for ASR projects. In a karst setting, the EAR process may be able to take advantage of natural surficial features and the increased storage capacity of karst aquifers to improve recharge to groundwater. However, the suitability for an EAR project in a karst setting depends on the maturity of the karst and its preceding epikarst. The focus of flow within the epikarst causes enlargement of fractures and karst conduits. Thus, the storage and transmissivity within the karst vary greatly. Electrical resistivity imaging (ERI) is a well-known geophysical tool for mapping fractures and sinkholes, typical in karst settings. Locating enhanced water conveyance structures of a karst aquifer can improve the design and operation of an EAR site. This study investigated the hydraulic connection between shallow and deep groundwater using ERI to identify potential flow pathways and to improve our understanding of the storage mechanisms of the epikarst. The results presented in this paper validate the effectiveness of ERI in characterizing karst/epikarst and delineating soil, bedrock and local faults and fractures in the subsurface.

Genomes of three bacteriophages from the deep subsurface aquifer.

Project description:Viral particles have been detected in the underground biosphere where they could be one of the main factors impacting microbial diversity, biogeochemistry and evolution. To characterize the viral component in the deep subsurface biosphere, we sequenced the metagenome of subsurface aquifer located in the Tomsk region of Russia, sampled via 2.8-km-deep borehole 5P. The de novo assembly of metagenomics sequences yielded three circular genomes assigned to bacteriophages of the order Caudovirales. The annotated genome sequences of these bacteriophages have been deposited in the GenBank database under the accession numbers MK113949, MK113950 and MK113951.

Integrated geoelectrical and geological data sets for shallow structure characterization of the southern margin of the Krzeszowice Graben (Southern Poland).

Project description:The data presented in this paper are related to the characterization of the selected part of the southern margin of the Krzeszowice Graben in Southern Poland. The presented data article contains geoelectrical and geological data. The first of them include: three (3) field profiles of 2D electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and also three (3) 2D ERT resistivity models. The second data set encompasses selected fourteen (14) photomicrographs of thin sections from undertaken Upper Jurrasic limestones samples. ERT field data was acquired with the use of SuperSting R8 resistivity meter, while the 2D resistivity models were generated in Res2Dmod software. Both geoelectrical data sets have been processed using Res2Dinv software. From all collected limestones samples thin sections have been prepared and studied for microfacies analysis.

Microbial Life in the Deep Subsurface Aquifer Illuminated by Metagenomics.

Project description:To get insights into microbial diversity and biogeochemical processes in the terrestrial deep subsurface aquifer, we sequenced the metagenome of artesian water collected at a 2.8 km deep oil exploration borehole 5P in Western Siberia, Russia. We obtained 71 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), altogether comprising 93% of the metagenome. Methanogenic archaea accounted for about 20% of the community and mostly belonged to hydrogenotrophic Methanobacteriaceae; acetoclastic and methylotrophic lineages were less abundant. ANME archaea were not found. The most numerous bacteria were the Firmicutes, Ignavibacteriae, Deltaproteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Armatimonadetes. Most of the community was composed of anaerobic heterotrophs. Only six MAGs belonged to sulfate reducers. These MAGs accounted for 5% of the metagenome and were assigned to the Firmicutes, Deltaproteobacteria, Candidatus Kapabacteria, and Nitrospirae. Organotrophic bacteria carrying cytochrome c oxidase genes and presumably capable of aerobic respiration mostly belonged to the Chloroflexi, Ignavibacteriae, and Armatimonadetes. They accounted for 13% of the community. The first complete closed genomes were obtained for members of the Ignavibacteriae SJA-28 lineage and the candidate phylum Kapabacteria. Metabolic reconstruction of the SJA-28 bacterium, designated Candidatus Tepidiaquacella proteinivora, predicted that it is an anaerobe growing on proteinaceous substrates by fermentation or anaerobic respiration. The Ca. Kapabacteria genome contained both the sulfate reduction pathway and cytochrome c oxidase. Presumably, the availability of buried organic matter of Mesozoic marine sediments, long-term recharge of the aquifer with meteoric waters and its spatial heterogeneity provided the conditions for the development of microbial communities, taxonomically and functionally more diverse than those found in oligotrophic underground ecosystems.
