Flux-tunable phase shifter for microwaves.

ABSTRACT: We introduce a magnetic-flux-tunable phase shifter for propagating microwave photons, based on three equidistant superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) on a transmission line. We experimentally implement the phase shifter and demonstrate that it produces a broad range of phase shifts and full transmission within the experimental uncertainty. Together with previously demonstrated beam splitters, this phase shifter can be utilized to implement arbitrary single-qubit gates for qubits based on propagating microwave photons. These results complement previous demonstrations of on-demand single-photon sources and detectors, and hence assist in the pursuit of an all-microwave quantum computer based on propagating photons.

Reconfigurable Josephson Phase Shifter.

Project description:Phase shifter is one of the key elements of quantum electronics. In order to facilitate operation and avoid decoherence, it has to be reconfigurable, persistent, and nondissipative. In this work, we demonstrate prototypes of such devices in which a Josephson phase shift is generated by coreless superconducting vortices. The smallness of the vortex allows a broad-range tunability by nanoscale manipulation of vortices in a micron-size array of vortex traps. We show that a phase shift in a device containing just a few vortex traps can be reconfigured between a large number of quantized states in a broad [-3π, +3π] range.

A universal design to realize a tunable perfect absorber from infrared to microwaves.

Project description:We propose a design for an universal absorber, characterized by a resonance frequency that can be tuned from visible to microwave frequencies independently of the choice of the metal and the dielectrics involved. An almost perfect absorption up to 99.8% is demonstrated at resonance for all polarization states of light and for a very wide angular aperture. These properties originate from a magnetic Fabry-Perot mode that is confined in a dielectric spacer of λ/100 thickness by a metamaterial layer and a mirror. An extraordinary large funneling through nano-slits explains how light can be trapped in the structure. Simple scaling laws can be used as a recipe to design ultra-thin perfect absorbers whatever the materials and the desired resonance wavelength, making our design truly universal.

Flux-tunable heat sink for quantum electric circuits.

Project description:Superconducting microwave circuits show great potential for practical quantum technological applications such as quantum information processing. However, fast and on-demand initialization of the quantum degrees of freedom in these devices remains a challenge. Here, we experimentally implement a tunable heat sink that is potentially suitable for the initialization of superconducting qubits. Our device consists of two coupled resonators. The first resonator has a high quality factor and a fixed frequency whereas the second resonator is designed to have a low quality factor and a tunable resonance frequency. We engineer the low quality factor using an on-chip resistor and the frequency tunability using a superconducting quantum interference device. When the two resonators are in resonance, the photons in the high-quality resonator can be efficiently dissipated. We show that the corresponding loaded quality factor can be tuned from above 105 down to a few thousand at 10 GHz in good quantitative agreement with our theoretical model.

Flux-Tunable Josephson Diode Effect in a Hybrid Four-Terminal Josephson Junction.

Project description:We investigate the direction-dependent switching current in a flux-tunable four-terminal Josephson junction defined in an InAs/Al two-dimensional heterostructure. The device exhibits the Josephson diode effect with switching currents that depend on the sign of the bias current. The superconducting diode efficiency, reaching a maximum of |η| ≈ 34%, is widely tunable─both in amplitude and sign─as a function of magnetic fluxes and gate voltages. Our observations are supported by a circuit model of three parallel Josephson junctions with nonsinusoidal current-phase relation. With respect to conventional Josephson interferometers, phase-tunable multiterminal Josephson junctions enable large diode efficiencies in structurally symmetric devices, where local magnetic fluxes generated on the chip break both time-reversal and spatial symmetries. Our work presents an approach for developing Josephson diodes with wide-range tunability that do not rely on exotic materials.

Gate- and flux-tunable sin(2φ) Josephson element with planar-Ge junctions.

Project description:Hybrid superconductor-semiconductor Josephson field-effect transistors (JoFETs) function as Josephson junctions with gate-tunable critical current. Additionally, they can feature a non-sinusoidal current-phase relation (CPR) containing multiple harmonics of the superconducting phase difference, a so-far underutilized property. Here we exploit this multi-harmonicity to create a Josephson circuit element with an almost perfectly π-periodic CPR, indicative of a largely dominant charge-4e supercurrent transport. We realize such a Josephson element, recently proposed as building block of a protected superconducting qubit, using a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) with low-inductance aluminum arms and two nominally identical JoFETs. The latter are fabricated from a SiGe/Ge/SiGe quantum-well heterostructure embedding a high-mobility two-dimensional hole gas. By carefully adjusting the JoFET gate voltages and finely tuning the magnetic flux through the SQUID close to half a flux quantum, we achieve a regime where the sin(2φ) component accounts for more than 95% of the total supercurrent. This result demonstrates a new promising route towards parity-protected superconducting qubits.

Squeezing microwaves by magnetostriction.

Project description:Squeezed light finds many important applications in quantum information science and quantum metrology, and has been produced in a variety of physical systems involving optical non-linear processes. Here, we show how a non-linear magnetostrictive interaction in a ferrimagnet in cavity magnomechanics can be used to reduce quantum noise of the electromagnetic field. We show optimal parameter regimes where a substantial and stationary squeezing of the microwave output field can be achieved. Realization of the scheme is within reach of current technology in cavity electromagnonics and magnomechanics. Our work provides a new and practicable approach for producing squeezed vacuum states of electromagnetic fields, and may find promising applications in quantum information processing and quantum metrology.

My Twenty Years in Microwave Chemistry: From Kitchen Ovens to Microwaves that aren't Microwaves.

Project description:This Personal Account describes the author's involvement in the field of microwave-assisted organic synthesis (MAOS) from the late 1990's starting out with kitchen microwave ovens right through to the development of a reactor in 2016 that - although not using microwave technology - in many ways mimics the performance of a modern laboratory microwave. The reader is taken along a journey that has spanned two decades of intense research on various aspects of microwave chemistry, and, at the same time, was intimately linked to key innovations regarding equipment design and development. A "behind the scenes" approach is taken in this article to share - from a very personal point of view - how specific projects and research ideas were conceived and developed in my research group, and how in general the field of microwave chemistry has progressed in the last two decades.

Microwaves reduce water refractive index.

Project description:Microwaves, long used as a convenient household appliance, have been increasingly used in industrial processes such as organic synthesis and oil processing. It has been proposed that microwaves can enhance these chemical processes via a non-thermal effect. Here we report the instantaneous effect of microwaves on the permittivity and phase velocity of light in water through the in-situ measurement of changes in refractive index. Microwave irradiation was found to reduce the water refractive index (RI) sharply. The reduction increased as a function of microwave power to a far greater extent than expected from the change in temperature. The phase velocity of light in water increases up to ~ 5% (RI of 1.27) during microwave irradiation. Upon stopping irradiation, the return to the equilibrium RI was delayed by up to 30 min. Our measurement shows that microwaves have a profound non-thermal and long-lasting effect on the properties of water. Further investigation is planned to verify if the observed RI reduction is restricted to the region near the surface or deep inside water bulk. The observation suggests a relationship between microwave-induced and the enhanced aqueous reactions.

Electro-optic comb based real time ultra-high sensitivity phase noise measurement system for high frequency microwaves.

Project description:Recent progress in ultra low phase noise microwave generation indispensably depends on ultra low phase noise characterization systems. However, achieving high sensitivity currently relies on time consuming averaging via cross correlation, which sometimes even underestimates phase noise because of residual correlations. Moreover, extending high sensitivity phase noise measurements to microwaves beyond 10 GHz is very difficult because of the lack of suitable high frequency microwave components. In this work, we introduce a delayed self-heterodyne method in conjunction with sensitivity enhancement via the use of higher order comb modes from an electro-optic comb for ultra-high sensitivity phase noise measurements. The method obviates the need for any high frequency RF components and has a frequency measurement range limited only by the bandwidth (100 GHz) of current electro-optic modulators. The estimated noise floor is as low as -133 dBc/Hz, -155 dBc/Hz, -170 dBc/Hz and -171 dBc/Hz without cross correlation at 1 kHz, 10 kHz, 100 kHz and 1 MHz Fourier offset frequency for a 10 GHz carrier, respectively. Moreover, since no cross correlation is necessary, RF oscillator phase noise can be directly suppressed via feedback up to 100 kHz frequency offset.

Laser ablation plasma expansion using microwaves.

Project description:This study explores the potential of utilizing microwaves to sustain the expansion of transient laser ablation plasma of Zr target. By application of microwaves on the plasma, we observe a significant enhancement with a two to three order of magnitude increase in the plasma emission intensity, and 18 times increase in the plasma's spatial volume. We investigate the temperature change of the plasma and observe that it decreases from 10,000 K to approximately 3000 K. Electron temperature decreased with volume expansion owing to increased surrounding air interaction, while the plasma can be sustained in air using microwaves. The increase in electron temperature during temperature drop is indicative of non-equilibrium plasma. Our results emphasize the contribution of microwaves in promoting enhanced emission and plasma formation at controlled, low temperature, thereby demonstrating the potential of microwaves to enhance the accuracy and performance of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. Importantly, our study suggests that microwaves could also mitigate the generation of toxic fumes and dust during ablation, a critical benefit when handling hazardous materials. The system we've developed is highly valuable for a range of applications, notably including the potential to reduce the possible emergence of toxic fumes during the decommissioning of nuclear debris.
