Thermodynamic signatures of the field-induced states of graphite.

ABSTRACT: When a magnetic field confines the carriers of a Fermi sea to their lowest Landau level, electron-electron interactions are expected to play a significant role in determining the electronic ground state. Graphite is known to host a sequence of magnetic field-induced states driven by such interactions. Three decades after their discovery, thermodynamic signatures of these instabilities are still elusive. Here we report the detection of these transitions with sound velocity measurements. The evolution of elastic constant anomalies with temperature and magnetic field allows to draw a detailed phase diagram which shows that the ground state evolves in a sequence of thermodynamic phase transitions. Our analysis indicates that the electron-electron interaction is not the sole driving force of these transitions and that lattice degrees of freedom play an important role.

Optically induced effective mass renormalization: the case of graphite image potential states.

Project description:Many-body interactions with the underlying bulk electrons determine the properties of confined electronic states at the surface of a metal. Using momentum resolved nonlinear photoelectron spectroscopy we show that one can tailor these many-body interactions in graphite, leading to a strong renormalization of the dispersion and linewidth of the image potential state. These observations are interpreted in terms of a basic self-energy model, and may be considered as exemplary for optically induced many-body interactions.

Evidence for large thermodynamic signatures of in-gap fermionic quasiparticle states in a Kondo insulator.

Project description:The mixed-valence compound YbB12 displays paradoxical quantum oscillations in electrical resistivity and magnetic torque in a regime with a well-developed insulating charge gap and in the absence of an electronic Fermi surface. However, signatures of such unusual fermionic quasiparticles in other bulk thermodynamic observables have been missing. Here we report the observation of a series of sharp double-peak features in the specific heat as a function of the magnetic field. The measured Hall resistivity evolves smoothly across the field values at which the characteristic anomalies appear in the thermodynamic response and rules out the possibility of conventional electrons as their origin. Our observations of thermodynamic anomalies in a bulk three-dimensional electrical insulator provide the evidence for the presence of emergent dispersing fermionic excitations within the insulating bulk, which sets the stage for further investigation of electron fractionalization in other correlated mixed-valence compounds.

Universalities of thermodynamic signatures in topological phases.

Project description:Topological insulators (superconductors) are materials that host symmetry-protected metallic edge states in an insulating (superconducting) bulk. Although they are well understood, a thermodynamic description of these materials remained elusive, firstly because the edges yield a non-extensive contribution to the thermodynamic potential, and secondly because topological field theories involve non-local order parameters, and cannot be captured by the Ginzburg-Landau formalism. Recently, this challenge has been overcome: by using Hill thermodynamics to describe the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model in two dimensions, it was shown that at the topological phase transition the thermodynamic potential does not scale extensively due to boundary effects. Here, we extend this approach to different topological models in various dimensions (the Kitaev chain and Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model in one dimension, the Kane-Mele model in two dimensions and the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model in three dimensions) at zero temperature. Surprisingly, all models exhibit the same universal behavior in the order of the topological-phase transition, depending on the dimension. Moreover, we derive the topological phase diagram at finite temperature using this thermodynamic description, and show that it displays a good agreement with the one calculated from the Uhlmann phase. Our work reveals unexpected universalities and opens the path to a thermodynamic description of systems with a non-local order parameter.

Proteomic Signatures of Corals from Thermodynamic Reefs.

Project description:Unlike most parts of the world, coral reefs of Taiwan's deep south have generally been spared from climate change-induced degradation. This has been linked to the oceanographically unique nature of Nanwan Bay, where intense upwelling occurs. Specifically, large-amplitude internal waves cause shifts in temperature of 6-9 °C over the course of several hours, and the resident corals not only thrive under such conditions, but they have also been shown to withstand multi-month laboratory incubations at experimentally elevated temperatures. To gain insight into the sub-cellular basis of acclimation to upwelling, proteins isolated from reef corals (Seriatopora hystrix) featured in laboratory-based reciprocal transplant studies in which corals from upwelling and non-upwelling control reefs (<20 km away) were exposed to stable or variable temperature regimes were analyzed via label-based proteomics (iTRAQ). Corals exposed to their "native" temperature conditions for seven days (1) demonstrated highest growth rates and (2) were most distinct from one another with respect to their protein signatures. The latter observation was driven by the fact that two Symbiodiniaceae lipid trafficking proteins, sec1a and sec34, were marginally up-regulated in corals exposed to their native temperature conditions. Alongside the marked degree of proteomic "site fidelity" documented, this dataset sheds light on the molecular mechanisms underlying acclimatization to thermodynamically extreme conditions in situ.

Possible electric-field-induced superconducting states in doped silicene.

Project description:Silicene has been synthesized recently, with experimental evidence showing possible superconductivity in the doped case. The noncoplanar low-buckled structure of this material inspires us to study the pairing symmetry of the doped system under a perpendicular external electric field. Our study reveals that the electric field induces an interesting quantum phase transition from the singlet chiral d + id'-wave superconducting phase to the triplet f-wave one. The emergence of the f-wave pairing results from the sublattice-symmetry-breaking caused by the electric field and the ferromagnetic-like intra-sublattice spin correlations at low dopings. Due to the enhanced density of states, the superconducting critical temperature of the system is enhanced by the electric field remarkably. Furthermore, we design a particular dc SQUID experiment to detect the quantum phase transition predicted here. Our results, if confirmed, will inject a new vitality to the familiar Si-based industry through adopting doped silicene as a tunable platform to study different types of exotic unconventional superconductivities.

Bacterial protease uses distinct thermodynamic signatures for substrate recognition.

Project description:Porphyromonas gingivalis and Porphyromonas endodontalis are important bacteria related to periodontitis, the most common chronic inflammatory disease in humans worldwide. Its comorbidity with systemic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, oral cancers and cardiovascular diseases, continues to generate considerable interest. Surprisingly, these two microorganisms do not ferment carbohydrates; rather they use proteinaceous substrates as carbon and energy sources. However, the underlying biochemical mechanisms of their energy metabolism remain unknown. Here, we show that dipeptidyl peptidase 11 (DPP11), a central metabolic enzyme in these bacteria, undergoes a conformational change upon peptide binding to distinguish substrates from end products. It binds substrates through an entropy-driven process and end products in an enthalpy-driven fashion. We show that increase in protein conformational entropy is the main-driving force for substrate binding via the unfolding of specific regions of the enzyme ("entropy reservoirs"). The relationship between our structural and thermodynamics data yields a distinct model for protein-protein interactions where protein conformational entropy modulates the binding free-energy. Further, our findings provide a framework for the structure-based design of specific DPP11 inhibitors.

Structural and thermodynamic signatures that define pseudotriloop RNA hairpins.

Project description:Pseudotriloop (PTL) structures in RNAs have been recognized as essential elements in RNA folding and recognition of proteins. PTL structures are derived from hexaloops by formation of a cross-loop base pair leaving a triloop and 3' bulged out residue. Despite their common presence and functional importance, insufficient structural and thermodynamic data are available that can be used to predict formation of PTLs from sequence alone. Using NMR spectroscopy and UV-melting data we established factors that contribute to the formation and stability of PTL structures derived from hepatitis B virus and human foamy virus. The NMR data show that, besides the cross-loop base pair, also a 3' pyrimidine bulge and a G-C loop-closing base pair are primary determinants of PTL formation. By changing the G-C closing base pair into C-G, the PTL switches into a hexaloop. Comparison of these rules with regular triloop hairpins and PTLs from other sources is discussed as well as the conservation of a PTL in human foamy virus and other spumaretroviruses.

Proteomic signatures of corals from thermodynamic reefs

Project description:In this work, I took an iTRAQ approach to profile the proteomes of 12 coral samples. Specifically, corals were collected from an upwelling site in the Luzon Strait ("Houbihu") and a non-upwelling "control" site in the nearby Taiwan Strait ("Houwan") and exposed to either highly variable (upwelling-simulating) or stable temperatures in the laboratory for seven days prior to sacrificing for protein analysis (the "Seriatopora hystrix variable temperature study" [SHVTS]). In this submission, I have uploaded the manuscript describing the experiment (Mayfield et al. 2012 J Exp Biol), the proofs of the manuscript describing the proteomic data (Mayfield in press Microorganisms), two RAW files (SHVTS-A & SHVTS-B for iTRAQ batches A & B, respectively), two MZML files (SHVTS-A & SHVTS-B), two MZID files (SHVTS-A & SHVTS-B), and a tab-delineated file that describes which samples were labelled with which iTRAQ tag ("Mayfield online supplemental data file"). I have also uploaded the supplemental material that accompanies the Mayfield (in press) article since that is what readers interested in the specifics of the proteomic analysis pipeline should consult. The peak data were queried against a conceptually translated S. hystrix-Cladocopium dinoflagellate transcriptome that has been uploaded as a fasta file. Please note that all proteomic data represent a mix of multiple organisms (namely the anthozoan host and the dinoflagellate endosymbionts that inhabit their gastrodermal cells). All data analysis was conducted with Proteome Discoverer (Thermo-Fisher Scientific).

Electronic signatures of Lorentzian dynamics and charge fluctuations in lithiated graphite structures.

Project description:Lithium graphite intercalation compounds (Li-GICs) are essential materials for modern day portable electronics and obtaining insights into their atomic structure and thermodynamics is of fundamental interest. Here we explore the electronic and atomic states of Li-GICs at varying degrees of Lithium loading (i.e., "staging") by means of ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations and simulated X-ray adsorption spectroscopy (XAS). We analyze the atomic correlation functions and shows that the enhancements of the Li-ion entropy with increased staging result from Lorentzian lithium-ion dynamics and charge fluctuations, which activate low-energy phonon modes. The associated electronic signatures are modulations of the unoccupied π*/σ* orbital energy levels and unambiguous fingerprints in Carbon K-edge XAS spectra. Thus, we extend the canonical view of XAS, establishing that these "static" measurements in fact encode the signature of the thermodynamic response and relaxation dynamics of the system. This causal link between atomic structure, spectroscopy, thermodynamics, and information theory can be generally exploited to better understand stability in solid-state electrochemical systems.

Wetting Transition from Wenzel to Cassie States: Thermodynamic Analysis.

Project description:Superhydrophobicity is closely linked to the chemical composition and geometric characteristics of surface roughness. Building on our structural studies on water and air-water interfaces, this work aims to elucidate the mechanism underlying the wetting transition from the Wenzel to the Cassie state on a hydrophobic surface. In the Wenzel state, the grooves are filled with water, meaning that the surface roughness becomes embedded in the liquid. To evaluate the effects of surface roughness on water structure, a wetting parameter (WRoughness) is proposed, which is closely related to the geometric characteristics of roughness, such as pillar size, width, and height. During the wetting transition from Wenzel to Cassie states, the critical wetting parameter (WRoughness,c) may be expected, which corresponds to the critical pillar size (ac), width (wc), and height (hc). The Cassie state is expected when the WRoughness is less than WRoughness,c (<WRoughness,c), which can be achieved by altering the geometric characteristics of the roughness, such as increasing pillar size (>ac), decreasing width (<wc), or increasing height (>hc). Additionally, molecular dynamic (MD) simulations are conducted to demonstrate the effects of surface roughness on superhydrophobicity.
