Dataset of surface refractivity in Southeast, Nigeria.

ABSTRACT: In this data article, analysis of surface refractivity and water vapour density in Southeast, Nigeria were reported. The meteorological data were collected for the period of 39 years between 1973 and 2012 from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climatology Centre. Five locations considered in the study area includes: Enugu, Onitsha, Abakaliki, Aba and Ihiala. Descriptive statistics were used to show an increase in monthly variation of refractivity of about 299.8 N units at Enugu in January to peak value of about 385.81 N units at Abakaliki in May. Hence, the seasonal variation for South East indicate maximum value within the months of March to May in the rainy season and a minimum value around December to February which is the dry season. The results from this data will help engineers in proper design and planning of radiowave propagation and satellite communication systems in southeastern, Nigeria.

An expanded mammal mitogenome dataset from Southeast Asia.

Project description:Southeast (SE) Asia is 1 of the most biodiverse regions in the world, and it holds approximately 20% of all mammal species. Despite this, the majority of SE Asia's genetic diversity is still poorly characterized. The growing interest in using environmental DNA to assess and monitor SE Asian species, in particular threatened mammals-has created the urgent need to expand the available reference database of mitochondrial barcode and complete mitogenome sequences. We have partially addressed this need by generating 72 new mitogenome sequences reconstructed from DNA isolated from a range of historical and modern tissue samples. Approximately 55 gigabases of raw sequence were generated. From this data, we assembled 72 complete mitogenome sequences, with an average depth of coverage of ×102.9 and ×55.2 for modern samples and historical samples, respectively. This dataset represents 52 species, of which 30 species had no previous mitogenome data available. The mitogenomes were geotagged to their sampling location, where known, to display a detailed geographical distribution of the species. Our new database of 52 taxa will strongly enhance the utility of environmental DNA approaches for monitoring mammals in SE Asia as it greatly increases the likelihoods that identification of metabarcoding sequencing reads can be assigned to reference sequences. This magnifies the confidence in species detections and thus allows more robust surveys and monitoring programmes of SE Asia's threatened mammal biodiversity. The extensive collections of historical samples from SE Asia in western and SE Asian museums should serve as additional valuable material to further enrich this reference database.

Dataset on human rights awareness in Northwest Nigeria.

Project description:The data in this article investigated the extent of human rights awareness in the seven States comprising the Northwest geopolitical zone of Nigeria and its relationship with the characteristics of the population in the light of limited human rights claims in the region. The data was obtained from 780 respondents using stratified and systematic random sampling techniques using with the help of a structured questionnaire. It is aimed at ascertaining, among others, the extent to which the population in the region is aware of human rights and the meaning of the terms 'marginalisation' and 'discrimination', whether the population is aware of how to claim human rights and whether the population is comfortable approaching the courts for human rights claims. The questionnaire also sought information on the most utilised sources of information, formal and informal factors that influence a decision to litigate human rights violations, and the most common complaint mechanisms employed by the population concerning human rights violations. The responses were analysed using Qualtrics software, and the data was presented using statistical representations. The data shows an appreciable level of human rights understanding in the region.

Dataset on noise level measurement in Ota metropolis, Nigeria.

Project description:Datasets contained in this article are noise level measurement carried out at 41 different locations in Ota metropolis, Nigeria. The noise readings were measured at a time interval of 30 min for each site considered using a precision grade sound level meter. The analysis was based on the noise descriptors LAeq, L10, L90, LD, TNI and NEI. Results from the study reflects that the highest and lowest equivalent noise levels (LAeq) were recorded at commercial areas (96 dB (A)) and residential areas (52 dB (A)), respectively, the background noise level (L90) has the highest and lowest values at commercial areas (77 dB (A)) and residential areas (44 dB (A)), respectively and the peak value (L10) has the highest value and lowest value at the commercial areas (96 dB (A)) and residential areas (56 dB (A)). Based on the WHO recommendations and standards, only 2 out of the 41 locations considered are under normally acceptable situation while the noise levels of other areas are not acceptable. Noise map developed in this study provides enough information for technical controls and interim legislation against environmental noise pollution in the metropolis. Moreover, considering the noise emission standards, planning and promoting the citizens awareness about the high noise risk could help to mitigate the effect of noise in Ota, Metropolis. The noise data in this study are useful as reference and guideline for future regulations on noise limit to be implemented for urban areas in Nigeria and developing countries at large.

A dataset for predicting Supreme Court judgments in Nigeria.

Project description:It has been widely argued among researchers that the application of big data analytics promises to reduce human bias and provide a scientific and evidence-based approach to the judicial process. In this dataset, historical data consisting of appeal cases presented at the Supreme Court of Nigeria (SCN) were collected from an online repository (Primsol Law Pavillion). A total of 5585 appeal cases brought before the SCN were collected from the archive. The dataset consisted of both criminal and civil appeal cases brought before the SCN. Variables that are related to court case proceedings were identified from related literature, verified by legal experts and used as a basis for generating an electronic structured version of the dataset stored as a spreadsheet file from the unstructured data. From the collected data, thirteen input variables were identified with one output/decision variable. The distribution of the numerical variables was presented as a descriptive statistical summary in terms of the minimum, maximum, mode, mean and standard deviation. The developed dataset can assist researchers to build predictive systems by training their models. Various feature extraction techniques can also be applied on the dataset to remove irrelevant or redundant features for increased performance of such classifiers that are needed to predict the outcome of legal cases.

Determinants of male involvement in family planning services in Abia State, Southeast Nigeria.

Project description:BackgroundMale involvement in family planning (FP) remains low in male-dominant communities. Family planning contributes to the regulation of fertility and population growth in Nigeria. Increasing male involvement in family planning services is crucial in reducing maternal morbidity and mortality in patriarchal societies such as Nigeria. This study identified the determinants of male involvement in family planning services in Abia State, Nigeria.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study conducted in twelve communities of Abia State, Nigeria. A total of 588 married men who met the eligibility criteria were recruited using a multistage sampling technique. An interviewer-administered semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data on the variables. Univariate, bivariate and multivariate analysis was done. The level of significance was set at 5%.ResultsThe overall level of active male involvement in family planning services was 55.1% (95% CI:51.0-59.2%). The mean age of the respondents was 42.4 ± 8.0 years. Access to television (aOR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.05-2.39), spouse employment status (aOR = 2.02, 95% CI: 1.33-2.06), joint decision-making (aOR = 1.66, 95% CI: 1.05-2.62), and accompanying spouse to the FP clinic (aOR = 3.15, 95% CI: 2.16-4.62) were determinants of active male involvement.ConclusionAt least, one out of every two men was actively involved in family planning services. This was determined by access to television, employment status of spouse, joint decision-making, and accompanying spouse to the FP clinic. There is a need to focus on the identified factors in order to further improve the active involvement of men in FP services.

Project description:Access to quality educational system, and the location of educational institutions are of great importance for future prospect of youth in any nation. These in return, have great effects on the economy growth and development of any country. Thus, the dataset contained in this article examines and explains the spatial distribution of universities in the Nigeria system of education. Data from the university commission, Nigeria, as at December 2017 are used. These include all the 40 federal universities, 44 states universities, and 69 private universities making a total of 153 universities in the Nigerian system of education. The data analysis is via the Geographic Information System (GIS) software. The dataset contained in this article will be of immense assistance to the national educational policy makers, parents, and potential students as regards smart and reliable decision making academically.

Railway track surface faults dataset.

Project description:Railway infrastructure maintenance is critical for ensuring safe and efficient transportation networks. Railway track surface defects such as cracks, flakings, joints, spallings, shellings, squats, grooves pose substantial challenges to the integrity and longevity of the tracks. To address these challenges and facilitate further research, a novel dataset of railway track surface faults has been presented in this paper. It is collected using the EKENH9R cameras mounted on a railway inspection vehicle. This dataset represents a valuable resource for the railway maintenance and computer vision related scientific communities. This dataset includes a diverse range of real-world track surface faults under various environmental conditions and lighting scenarios. This makes it an important asset for the development and evaluation of Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), and image processing algorithms. This paper also provides detailed annotations and metadata for each image class, enabling precise fault classification and severity assessment of the defects. Furthermore, this paper discusses the data collection process, highlights the significance of railway track maintenance, emphasizes the potential applications of this dataset in fault identification and predictive maintenance, and development of automated inspection systems. We encourage the research community to utilize this dataset for advancing the state-of-the-art research related to railway track surface condition monitoring.

The Impact of Intervention on Sexual Practices of HIV Positive Individuals in Southeast Nigeria.

Project description:Objective. To describe the impact of repeating behavioral educational intervention on sexual practices of HIV positive individuals. Method. A prospective cohort study of HIV positive individual was conducted in southeast Nigeria from June 2007 to May 2008. Information on sexual practices was collected at initial visit; education was given and its impact was evaluated afterwards. Results. Knowledge about risk of unprotected intercourse increased by 41%, condom use by 27% (P < .001) and consistent condom use by 55% (P < .001). The significant predictors of consistent condom use include male gender, multiple sexual partner, as well as good knowledge of HIV transmission, higher educational status and being married. Non use of condom at postintervention survey were characterized by female gender (n = 4), monogamous relationship (n = 10), little or no education (n = 10), and unmarried (n = 7) respondents. Conclusion. Repeated behavioral education intervention improves consistent condom use among HIV positive individuals and will help curb the spread of HIV/AIDS.
