ABSTRACT: Reduction of scandium nitride clusterfullerene, Sc3N@Ih-C80, by sodium fluorenone ketyl in the presence of cryptand[2,2,2] allows the crystallization of the {cryptand[2,2,2](Na(+))}2(Sc3N@Ih-C80(-))2·2.5C6H4Cl2 (1) salt. The Sc3N@Ih-C80˙(-) radical anions are dimerized to form single-bonded (Sc3N@Ih-C80(-))2 dimers.

Synthesis and Isolation of the Titanium-Scandium Endohedral Fullerenes-Sc2 TiC@Ih -C80 , Sc2 TiC@D5h -C80 and Sc2 TiC2 @Ih -C80 : Metal Size Tuning of the Ti(IV) /Ti(III) Redox Potentials.

Project description:The formation of endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) in an electric arc is reported for the mixed-metal Sc-Ti system utilizing methane as a reactive gas. Comparison of these results with those from the Sc/CH4 and Ti/CH4 systems as well as syntheses without methane revealed a strong mutual influence of all key components on the product distribution. Whereas a methane atmosphere alone suppresses the formation of empty cage fullerenes, the Ti/CH4 system forms mainly empty cage fullerenes. In contrast, the main fullerene products in the Sc/CH4 system are Sc4 C2 @C80 (the most abundant EMF from this synthesis), Sc3 C2 @C80 , isomers of Sc2 C2 @C82 , and the family Sc2 C2 n (2 n=74, 76, 82, 86, 90, etc.), as well as Sc3 CH@C80 . The Sc-Ti/CH4 system produces the mixed-metal Sc2 TiC@C2 n (2 n=68, 78, 80) and Sc2 TiC2 @C2 n (2 n=80) clusterfullerene families. The molecular structures of the new, transition-metal-containing endohedral fullerenes, Sc2 TiC@Ih -C80 , Sc2 TiC@D5h -C80 , and Sc2 TiC2 @Ih -C80 , were characterized by NMR spectroscopy. The structure of Sc2 TiC@Ih -C80 was also determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which demonstrated the presence of a short Ti=C double bond. Both Sc2 TiC- and Sc2 TiC2 -containing clusterfullerenes have Ti-localized LUMOs. Encapsulation of the redox-active Ti ion inside the fullerene cage enables analysis of the cluster-cage strain in the endohedral fullerenes through electrochemical measurements.

Photoreactions of Endohedral Metallofullerene with Siliranes: Electronic Properties of Carbosilylated Lu₃N@Ih-C80.

Project description:Photochemical carbosilylation of Lu₃N@Ih-C80 was performed using siliranes (silacyclopropanes) to afford the corresponding [5,6]- and [6,6]-adducts. Electrochemical studies indicated that the redox potentials of the carbosilylated derivatives were shifted cathodically in comparison with those of the [5,6]-pyrrolidino adducts. The electronic effect of the silirane addends on Lu₃N@Ih-C80 was verified on the basis of density functional theory calculations.

Vertical Etching of Scandium Aluminum Nitride Thin Films Using TMAH Solution.

Project description:A wide bandgap, an enhanced piezoelectric coefficient, and low dielectric permittivity are some of the outstanding properties that have made ScxAl1-xN a promising material in numerous MEMS and optoelectronics applications. One of the substantial challenges of fabricating ScxAl1-xN devices is its difficulty in etching, specifically with higher scandium concentration. In this work, we have developed an experimental approach with high temperature annealing followed by a wet etching process using tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide (TMAH), which maintains etching uniformity across various Sc compositions. The experimental results of etching approximately 730 nm of ScxAl1-xN (x = 0.125, 0.20, 0.40) thin films show that the etch rate decreases with increasing scandium content. Nevertheless, sidewall verticality of 85°~90° (±0.2°) was maintained for all Sc compositions. Based on these experimental outcomes, it is anticipated that this etching procedure will be advantageous in the fabrication of acoustic, photonic, and piezoelectric devices.

Triply Bonded Pancake π-Dimers Stabilized by Tetravalent Actinides.

Project description:Aromatic π-stacking is a weakly attractive, noncovalent interaction often found in biological macromolecules and synthetic supramolecular chemistry. The weak nondirectional nature of π-stacking can present challenges in the design of materials owing to their weak, nondirectional nature. However, when aromatic π-systems contain an unpaired electron, stronger attraction involving face-to-face π-orbital overlap is possible, resulting in covalent so-called "pancake" bonds. Two-electron, multicenter single pancake bonds are well known, whereas four-electron double pancake bonds are rare. Higher-order pancake bonds have been predicted, but experimental systems are unknown. Here, we show that six-electron triple pancake bonds can be synthesized by a 3-fold reduction of hexaazatrinaphthylene (HAN) and subsequent stacking of the [HAN]3- triradicals. Our analysis reveals a multicenter covalent triple pancake bond consisting of a σ-orbital and two equivalent π-orbitals. An electrostatic stabilizing role is established for the tetravalent thorium and uranium ions in these systems. We also show that the electronic absorption spectrum of the triple pancake bonds closely matches computational predictions, providing experimental verification of these unique interactions. The discovery of conductivity in thin films of triply bonded π-dimers presents new opportunities for the discovery of single-component molecular conductors and other spin-based molecular materials.

Halogen-Bonded Supramolecular Parallelograms: From Self-Complementary Iodoalkyne Halogen-Bonded Dimers to 1:1 and 2:2 Iodoalkyne Halogen-Bonded Cocrystals.

Project description:The formation of supramolecular parallelograms utilizing iodoalkyne-pyridine halogen bonding is described. The crystal structures of four iodoalkynyl-substituted (phenylethynyl)pyridines demonstrate the feasibility of discrete self-complementary dimer formation. These compounds 3-(2-iodoethynyl-phenylethynyl) pyridine (1), 2-(3-iodoethynyl-phenylethynyl) pyridine (2), 3-(4,5-difluoro-2-iodoethynyl-phenylethynyl) pyridine (3), and 2-(5-iodoethynyl-2,4-dimethylphenylethynyl) pyridine (4) all form parallelogram-shaped dimers with two self-complementary short N-I halogen bonds. The potential formation of iodoalkynyl halogen-bonded supramolecular macrocycles is demonstrated by the formation of a discrete halogen-bonded parallelogram-shaped complex in the 1:1 cocrystal formed from the bis iodoalkyne, 1-iodoethynyl-2-(3-iodoethynyl-phenylethynyl)-4,5-dimethoxybenzene (6), and the dipyridyl, 5-phenyl-2-(pyridin-3-ylethynyl)pyridine (7). Furthermore, discrete supramolecular parallelograms form within the 2:2 cocrystal formed between 1,2-bis(iodoethynyl)-4,5-difluorobenzene and the dipyridyl 4-(3-pyridylethynyl) pyridine (8).

Multiple hydrogen-bonded dimers: are only the frontier atoms relevant?

Project description:Non-frontier atom exchanges in hydrogen-bonded aromatic dimers can induce significant interaction energy changes (up to 6.5 kcal mol-1). Our quantum-chemical analyses reveal that the relative hydrogen-bond strengths of N-edited guanine-cytosine base pair isosteres, which cannot be explained from the frontier atoms, follow from the charge accumulation in the monomers.

Trimetallic Nitride Endohedral Fullerenes Carboxyl-Gd3N@C80: A New Theranostic Agent for Combating Oxidative Stress and Resolving Inflammation.

Project description:Antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects of trimetallic nitride endohedral fullerenes carboxyl-Gd3N@C80, a newly developed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent, were investigated. All hydrochalarone and carboxyl-functionalized fullerenes showed effective radical (hydroxyl and superoxide anion) scavenging, whereas the carboxyl-Gd3N@C80 more efficiently attenuated lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced oxidative stress in macrophages. Carboxyl-Gd3N@C80 also suppressed LPS-elicited mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory inducible nitric oxide synthase and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and upregulated antioxidative enzyme axis Nrf2 and heme oxygenase-1, possibly via ERK but not AKT signaling pathways. Therefore, carboxyl-Gd3N@C80 held a great promise in becoming a novel theranostic nanoplatform for simultaneously deliver MRI contrast and therapeutic functions to inflammation-related diseases.

Atomic structures of a liquid-phase bonded metal/nitride heterointerface.

Project description:Liquid-phase bonding is a technologically important method to fabricate high-performance metal/ceramic heterostructures used for power electronic devices. However, the atomic-scale mechanisms of how these two dissimilar crystals specifically bond at the interfaces are still not well understood. Here we analyse the atomically-resolved structure of a liquid-phase bonded heterointerface between Al alloy and AlN single crystal using aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). In addition, energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis, using dual silicon drift X-ray detectors in STEM, was performed to analyze the local chemistry of the interface. We find that a monolayer of MgO is spontaneously formed on the AlN substrate surface and that a polarity-inverted monolayer of AlN is grown on top of it. Thus, the Al alloy is bonded with the polarity-inverted AlN monolayer, creating a complex atomic-scale layered structure, facilitating the bonding between the two dissimilar crystals during liquid-phase bonding processes. Density-functional-theory calculations confirm that the bonding stability is strongly dependent on the polarity and stacking of AlN and MgO monolayers. Understanding the spontaneous formation of layered transition structures at the heterointerface will be key in fabricating very stable Al alloy/AlN heterointerface required for high reliability power electronic devices.

Variations in Crystalline Structures and Electrical Properties of Single Crystalline Boron Nitride Nanosheets.

Project description:We report the studies of (1) the basic mechanism underlying the formation of defect-free, single crystalline boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) synthesized using pulsed laser plasma deposition (PLPD) technique, (2) the variation in the crystalline structure at the edges of the hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets, and (3) the basic electrical properties related to the BNNSs tunneling effect and electrical breakdown voltage. The nanoscale morphologies of BNNSs are characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). The results show that each sample consisted of a number of transparent BNNSs that partially overlapped one another. Varying the deposition duration yielded different thicknesses of sample but did not affect the morphology, structure, and thickness of individual BNNSs pieces. Analysis of the SEM and HRTEM data revealed changes in the spatial period of the B3-N3 hexagonal structures and the interlayer distance at the edge of the BNNSs, which occurred due to the limited number of atomic layers and was confirmed further by x-ray diffraction (XRD) study. The experimental results clearly indicate that the values of the electrical conductivities of the super-thin BNNSs and the effect of temperature relied strongly on the direction of observation.

Ion polarisation-assisted hydrogen-bonded ferroelectrics in liquid crystalline domains.

Project description:An alkylamide-substituted (-NHCOC10H21) hydrogen-bonded dibenzo[18]crown-6 derivative (1) was prepared to stabilise the ionic channel structure in a discotic hexagonal columnar (Colh) liquid crystal. The introduction of simple M+X- salts such as Na+PF6 - and K+I- into the ionic channel of 1 enhanced the ionic conductivity of the Colh phase of the M+·(1)·X- salts, with the highest ionic conductivity reaching ∼10-6 S cm-1 for K+·(1)·I- and Na+·(1)·PF6 - at 460 K, which was approximately 5 orders of magnitude higher than that of 1. The introduction of non-ferroelectric 1 into the ferroelectric N,N',N''-tri(tetradecyl)-1,3,5-benzenetricarboxamide (3BC) elicited a ferroelectric response from the mixed Colh phase of (3BC) x (1)1-x with x = 0.9 and 0.8. The further doping of M+X- into the ferroelectric Colh phase of (3BC)0.9(1)0.1 enhanced the ferroelectric polarisation assisted by ion displacement in the half-filled ionic channel for the vacant dibenzo[18]crown-6 of (3BC)0.9[(M+)0.5·(1)·(X-)0.5]0.1.
