Functionalization of graphene at the organic/water interface.

ABSTRACT: A simple method for the deposition of noble metal (Pd, Au) nanoparticles on a free-standing chemical vapour deposited graphene (CVD GR) monolayer is reported. The method consists of assembling the high purity CVD GR, by transfer from poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), at the organic/water interface. Metal deposition can then proceed using either spontaneous or electrochemically-controlled processes. The resultant graphene-based metal nanoclusters are characterized using atomic force and electron microscopy techniques, and the location of the nanostructures underneath the graphene layer is determined from the position and the intensity changes of the Raman bands (D, G, 2D). This novel process for decoration of a single-layer graphene sheet with metal nanoparticles using liquid/liquid interfaces opens an alternative and useful way to prepare low dimensional carbon-based nanocomposites and electrode materials.

Project description:Ordered nanoscale patterns have been observed by atomic force microscopy at graphene-water and graphite-water interfaces. The two dominant explanations for these patterns are that (i) they consist of self-assembled organic contaminants or (ii) they are dense layers formed from atmospheric gases (especially nitrogen). Here we apply molecular dynamics simulations to study the behavior of dinitrogen and possible organic contaminants at the graphene-water interface. Despite the high concentration of N2 in ambient air, we find that its expected occupancy at the graphene-water interface is quite low. Although dense (disordered) aggregates of dinitrogen have been observed in previous simulations, our results suggest that they are stable only in the presence of supersaturated aqueous N2 solutions and dissipate rapidly when they coexist with nitrogen gas near atmospheric pressure. On the other hand, although heavy alkanes are present at only trace concentrations (micrograms per cubic meter) in typical indoor air, we predict that such concentrations can be sufficient to form ordered monolayers that cover the graphene-water interface. For octadecane, grand canonical Monte Carlo suggests nucleation and growth of monolayers above an ambient concentration near 6 μg m-3, which is less than some literature values for indoor air. The thermodynamics of the formation of these alkane monolayers includes contributions from the hydration free-energy (unfavorable), the free-energy of adsorption to the graphene-water interface (highly favorable), and integration into the alkane monolayer phase (highly favorable). Furthermore, the peak-to-peak distances in AFM force profiles perpendicular to the interface (0.43-0.53 nm), agree with the distances calculated in simulations for overlayers of alkane-like molecules, but not for molecules such as N2, water, or aromatics. Taken together, these results suggest that ordered domains observed on graphene, graphite, and other hydrophobic materials in water are consistent with alkane-like molecules occupying the interface.

Project description:Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) has emerged as a valuable tool for understanding multiphasic and compartmentalized systems, which have crucial wide-ranging applications across diverse fields. However, ECL reactions are limited to the vicinity of the electrode surface due to spatial constraints of electron transfer and the short lifetime of radical species, making ECL emission in bulk multiphasic solution challenging. To address this limitation, we propose a novel bipolar electrochemistry (BPE) approach for wireless dual-color ECL emission at the water/organic (w/o) interface. Firstly, amphiphilic glassy carbon (GC) microbeads with distinct hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions are prepared by bipolar electrografting of hydrophobic trifluoromethyl diazonium salt, then the resulting Janus beads are positioned at the w/o interface. Subsequently, two model ECL systems containing luminol and H2O2 in the aqueous phase, and [Ru(bpy)3]2+ and benzoyl peroxide (BPO) in the organic phase, are selected based on their solubility to confine light-emitting reactions to their respective phases. Upon application of an electric field perpendicular to the interface, the Janus microbeads get polarized, triggering simultaneous oxidative blue ECL (425 nm) and reductive red ECL (620 nm) in the aqueous and organic phases, respectively. Taking advantage of ECL imaging, the potential gradient distribution on the GC microbead at the w/o interface is revealed, indicating a "pseudo-closed" bipolar system due to limited ion transfer between phases. We also investigate the effect of changing the electric field direction parallel to the interface, which alters the ECL emission area from a hemisphere to a quarter of the microbead's surface. This bipolar ECL approach at the w/o interface not only offers opportunities for imaging the aqueous phase and organic phase simultaneously, but also enables ECL imaging and light generation in the bulk solution, thus overcoming the usual spatial limitation requiring proximity to the electrode surface.

Project description:Graphene oxide (GO) has proved itself as a nanomaterial capable of acting as a surfactant by lowering the interfacial tension of the oil-water interface due to its polar oxygen groups. However, the surfactant behavior of the pure graphene sheet─since prevention of edge oxidation in experimental setups is nontrivial─is still an unresolved issue in graphene research despite significant progress in the field in recent years. Here, we conduct both atomistic and coarse-grained simulations to demonstrate that─surprisingly─even pristine graphene, which only consists of hydrophobic carbon atoms, is attracted to the octanol-water interface and consequently reduces its surface tension by 2.3 kBT/nm2 or about 10 mN/m. Interestingly, the location of the free energy minimum is not precisely at the oil-water interface itself but is rather buried about two octanol layers into the octanol phase, being about 0.9 nm from the water phase. We demonstrate that the observed surfactant behavior is purely entropically driven and can be attributed to the unfavorable lipid-like structuring of octanol molecules at the free octanol-water interface. In essence, graphene enhances the inherent lipid-like behavior of octanol at the water interface rather than directly acting as a surfactant. Importantly, graphene does not display surfactant-like behavior in corresponding Martini coarse-grained simulations of the octanol-water system since the free liquid-liquid interface loses essential structure at the lower coarse-grained resolution. However, a similar surfactant behavior is recovered in coarse-grained simulations of longer alcohols such as dodecan-1-ol and hexadecan-1-ol. The observed discrepancies at different model resolutions enable us to construct a comprehensive model of the surfactant behavior of graphene at the octanol-water interface. The here-gained insights may facilitate the broader utilization of graphene in numerous domains of nanotechnology. Furthermore, since a drug's octanol-water partition coefficient is a crucial physicochemical parameter in rational drug discovery, we also believe that the universality of the here-illustrated entropic surfactant behavior of planar molecules deserves special attention in the drug design and development field.
