The current status of health data on Korean children and adolescents.

ABSTRACT: Childhood and adolescence are critical periods that affect adults' health status. Therefore, the factors influencing the health of children and adolescents should be analyzed. In Korea, a wide range of youth-related health data has been obtained, both on the regional level and on the national level. This report summarizes the current status of studies related to the health of Korean children and adolescents. Data for which open access is offered include the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Study, the Panel Study on Korean Children, the Korean Youth Panel Survey, the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey, and the Student Health Examination. In addition, the Health Examination of Korean Youth Outside of School, the Korean Children and Adolescents Obesity Cohort Study, the Korean Children's Environmental Health Study, the Korea Youth Media Use and Harmful Environment Survey, the Comprehensive Survey of Korean Youth, and the Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study are summarized.

Project description:This study explored the relationship between adolescents' weight status and mental health problems. It specifically investigated the weight perceptions of obese adolescents and the effect on their mental health. This cross-sectional study was based on the data of adolescents aged 12-18 years from the Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (2010-2019). Data regarding anthropometric measurements, health conditions, and socioeconomic status were extracted, and the associations between weight status (actual, perceived, or misperceived) and mental health conditions (depressed mood, perceived stress, and suicidal ideation) were analyzed using complex sample multiple logistic regression after adjusting for possible confounders. A total of 5683 adolescents (53.1% boys and 46.9% girls) were included in this study, with a mean age of 15.1 years. Among the participants, actual, perceived, and misperceived status of being overweight were observed in 20.8%, 32.7%, and 18.4%, respectively. Additionally, depressed mood, perceived stress, and suicidal ideation were observed in 9.1%, 25.7%, and 7.4% of Korean adolescents, respectively, with higher prevalences in girls for all three conditions. Actual weight status was not significantly associated with mental health conditions in either sex. Furthermore, girls who perceived themselves to be overweight, regardless of their actual body weight, or who had overestimated their actual weight were more likely to have experienced depressed mood and stress, while boys who perceived themselves to be underweight were more likely to have experienced suicidal ideation than participants with an average weight perception or an accurate recognition of their weight status. Conversely, in overweight/obese participants, perceived weight status was not associated with mental health conditions. In conclusion, perceived weight status and its discrepancy with actual body weight were more strongly associated with an increased risk of mental health problems than actual weight status itself among Korean adolescents. Therefore, adolescents' perceptions of their body image and weight-related attitude should be assessed to promote their mental health.

Project description:BackgroundThe changes in body composition during puberty not only contribute to the differences in body composition between adult males and females but also have associations with growth problems and metabolic disorders, including obesity. Therefore, understanding the changes in body composition during the pubertal period and analyzing reference values based on race and gender are essential research resources. The objective of this study was to generate reference centiles for body composition on a monthly basis using an extensive dataset of body composition information from Korean children and adolescents.MethodsA total of 88,069 measurements from 22,515 children (11,062 boys and 11,453 girls) aged 7-16 years using a bioelectrical impedance analysis were included in the study after performing a Z-score-based data management procedure. Height, weight, body fat mass (BFM), and fat-free mass (FFM) were measured and used to derive body fat percentage (BF%), body mass index (BMI), fat mass index (FMI), and fat-free mass index (FFMI). Sex- and age-specific centiles were estimated using generalized additive models for location, scale, and shape with the Box-Cox Cole and Green distribution (i.e., lambda-mu-sigma method).ResultsThe sex- and age-related disparities in body composition were most pronounced when weight was partitioned into BFM and FFM. In boys, the FFM increased markedly during pubertal growth spurts, whereas BFM remained relatively stable. In girls, the BFM increased steadily, whereas the rate of FFM increased slowly. The BMI increased steadily with age in both sexes. However, when BMI was parsed into FMI and FFMI, it became clear that the FFMI increased substantially during pubertal growth in boys, whereas the FMI peaked around age 11 and then declined. Conversely, the FMI increased steadily in girls, albeit with a slowing rate in the increase of the FFMI beginning around age 12.ConclusionsThis study produced age- and sex-specific reference percentiles for body composition indices in Korean children and adolescents using extensive biometric data.
