Reduced Near-Resonant Vibrational Coupling at the Surfaces of Liquid Water and Ice.

ABSTRACT: We study the resonant interaction of the OH stretch vibrations of water molecules at the surfaces of liquid water and ice using heterodyne-detected sum-frequency generation (HD-SFG) spectroscopy. By studying different isotopic mixtures of H2O and D2O, we vary the strength of the interaction, and we monitor the resulting effect on the HD-SFG spectrum of the OH stretch vibrations. We observe that the near-resonant coupling effects are weaker at the surface than in the bulk, for both water and ice, indicating that for both phases of water the OH vibrations are less strongly delocalized at the surface than in the bulk.

Interfacial Vibrational Dynamics of Ice Ih and Liquid Water.

Project description:Insights into energy flow dynamics at ice surfaces are essential for understanding chemical dynamics relevant to atmospheric and geographical sciences. Here, employing ultrafast surface-specific spectroscopy, we report the interfacial vibrational dynamics of ice Ih. A comparison to liquid water surfaces reveals accelerated vibrational energy relaxation and dissipation at the ice surface for hydrogen-bonded OH groups. In contrast, free-OH groups sticking into the vapor phase exhibit substantially slower vibrational dynamics on ice. The acceleration and deceleration of vibrational dynamics of these different OH groups at the ice surface are attributed to enhanced intermolecular coupling and reduced rotational mobility, respectively. Our results highlight the unique properties of free-OH groups on ice, putatively linked to the high catalytic activities of ice surfaces.

Cavity molecular dynamics simulations of liquid water under vibrational ultrastrong coupling.

Project description:We simulate vibrational strong coupling (VSC) and vibrational ultrastrong coupling (V-USC) for liquid water with classical molecular dynamics simulations. When the cavity modes are resonantly coupled to the O-H stretch mode of liquid water, the infrared spectrum shows asymmetric Rabi splitting. The lower polariton (LP) may be suppressed or enhanced relative to the upper polariton (UP) depending on the frequency of the cavity mode. Moreover, although the static properties and the translational diffusion of water are not changed under VSC or V-USC, we do find the modification of the orientational autocorrelation function of H2O molecules especially under V-USC, which could play a role in ground-state chemistry.

Thermodynamics of sustaining liquid water within rough icephobic surfaces to achieve ultra-low ice adhesion.

Project description:The build-up of ice on aircraft, bridges, oil rigs, wind turbines, electrical lines, and other surfaces exposed to cold environments diminishes their safe and effective operation. To engineer robust surfaces that reduce ice adhesion, it is necessary to understand the physics of what makes a surface icephobic ("ice-hating") as well as the relationship between icephobicity and ice adhesion. Here we elucidate the molecular origin of icephobicity based on ice-surface interactions and characterize the correlation between material icephobicity and liquid wettability. This fundamental understanding of icephobic characteristics enables us to propose a robust design for topologically textured, icephobic surfaces. The design identifies the critical confinement length scale to sustain liquid water (as opposed to ice) in between roughness features and can reduce the strength of ice adhesion by over a factor of twenty-seven compared to traditional hydrophobic surfaces. The reduction in ice adhesion is due to the metastability of liquid water; as ambient ice cleaves from the textured surface, liquid water leaves confinement and freezes - a process which takes the system from a local energy minimum to a global energy minimum. This phase transition generates a detachment force that actively propels ambient ice from the surface.

Interplay between Hydrogen Bonding and Vibrational Coupling in Liquid N-Methylacetamide.

Project description:Intrinsically disordered proteins play an important role in biology, and unraveling their labile structure presents a vital challenge. However, the dynamical structure of such proteins thwarts their study by standard techniques such as X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy. Here, we use a neat liquid composed of N-methylacetamide molecules as a model system to elucidate dynamical and structural properties similar to those one can expect to see in intrinsically disordered proteins. To examine the structural dynamics in the neat liquid, we combine molecular dynamics, response-function-based spectral simulations, and two-dimensional polarization-resolved infrared spectroscopy in the amide I (CO stretch) region. The two-dimensional spectra reveal a delicate interplay between hydrogen bonding and intermolecular vibrational coupling effects, observed through a fast anisotropy decay. The present study constitutes a general platform for understanding the structure and dynamics of highly disordered proteins.

Vibrational resonant inelastic X-ray scattering in liquid acetic acid: a ruler for molecular chain lengths.

Project description:Quenching of vibrational excitations in resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of liquid acetic acid is observed. At the oxygen core resonance associated with localized excitations at the O-H bond, the spectra lack the typical progression of vibrational excitations observed in RIXS spectra of comparable systems. We interpret this phenomenon as due to strong rehybridization of the unoccupied molecular orbitals as a result of hydrogen bonding, which however cannot be observed in x-ray absorption but only by means of RIXS. This allows us to address the molecular structure of the liquid, and to determine a lower limit for the average molecular chain length.

Modification of Enzyme Activity by Vibrational Strong Coupling of Water.

Project description:Vibrational strong coupling (VSC) has recently emerged as a completely new tool for influencing chemical reactivity. It harnesses electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations through the creation of hybrid states of light and matter, called polaritonic states, in an optical cavity resonant to a molecular absorption band. Here, we investigate the effect of vibrational strong coupling of water on the enzymatic activity of pepsin, where a water molecule is directly involved in the enzyme's chemical mechanism. We observe an approximately 4.5-fold decrease of the apparent second-order rate constant kcat /Km when coupling the water stretching vibration, whereas no effect was detected for the strong coupling of the bending vibration. The possibility of modifying enzymatic activity by coupling water demonstrates the potential of VSC as a new tool to study biochemical reactivity.

On the Hydrogen Bond Strength and Vibrational Spectroscopy of Liquid Water.

Project description:In the present work, we introduce two new metrics i.e. hydrogen-bond strength and charge-transfer between the donor/acceptor water molecules as a measure of hydrogen-bond rearrangement dynamics. Further, we also employ a simple model based on energy flux through the donor-acceptor water pairs to quantify the extent of the local hydrogen-bond network reorganization. Most importantly, we report a linear relationship between the OH stretch frequency and the charge and energy transfer through donor-acceptor water pairs. We demonstrate that the vibrational frequency fluctuations, which are used to determine third-order non-linear spectroscopic observables like the short-time slope of three pulse photon echo, can be used as an analog of the fluctuations in the hydrogen-bond strength and charge-transfer. The timescales obtained from our hydrogen-bond strength correlation and charge-transfer correlation decay are in excellent agreement with the computed frequency-time correlation function, as well as with recent vibrational echo experiments.

Anomalously Rapid Hydration Water Diffusion Dynamics Near DNA Surfaces.

Project description:The emerging Overhauser effect dynamic nuclear polarization (ODNP) technique measures the translational mobility of water within the vicinity (5-15 Å) of preselected sites. The work presented here expands the capabilities of the ODNP technique and illuminates an important, previously unseen, property of the translational diffusion dynamics of water at the surface of DNA duplexes. We attach nitroxide radicals (i.e., spin labels) to multiple phosphate backbone positions of DNA duplexes, allowing ODNP to measure the hydration dynamics at select positions along the DNA surface. With a novel approach to ODNP analysis, we isolate the contributions of water molecules at these sites that undergo free translational diffusion from water molecules that either loosely bind to or exchange protons with the DNA. The results reveal that a significant population of water in a localized volume adjacent to the DNA surface exhibits fast, bulk-like characteristics and moves unusually rapidly compared to water found in similar probe volumes near protein and membrane surfaces. Control studies show that the observation of these characteristics are upheld even when the DNA duplex is tethered to streptavidin or the mobility of the nitroxides is altered. This implies that, as compared to protein or lipid surfaces, it is an intrinsic feature of the DNA duplex surface that it interacts only weakly with a significant fraction of the surface hydration water network. The displacement of this translationally mobile water is energetically less costly than that of more strongly bound water by up to several kBT and thus can lower the activation barrier for interactions involving the DNA surface.

Mechanisms for Reduced Fibrin Clot Formation on Liquid-Infused Surfaces.

Project description:Biomedical devices are prone to blood clot formation (thrombosis), and liquid-infused surfaces (LIS) are effective in reducing the thrombotic response. However, the mechanisms that underpin this performance, and in particular the role of the lubricant, are not well understood. In this work, it is investigated whether the mechanism of LIS action is related to i) inhibition of factor XII (FXII) activation and the contact pathway; ii) reduced fibrin density of clots formed on surfaces; iii) increased mobility of proteins or cells on the surface due to the interfacial flow of the lubricant. The chosen LIS is covalently tethered, nanostructured layers of perfluorocarbons, infused with thin films of medical-grade perfluorodecalin (tethered-liquid perfluorocarbon), prepared with chemical vapor deposition previously optimized to retain lubricant under flow. Results show that in the absence of external flow, interfacial mobility is inherently higher at the liquid-blood interface, making it a key contributor to the low thrombogenicity of LIS, as FXII activity and fibrin density are equivalent at the interface. The findings of this study advance the understanding of the anti-thrombotic behavior of LIS-coated biomedical devices for future coating design. More broadly, enhanced interfacial mobility may be an important, underexplored mechanism for the anti-fouling behavior of surface coatings.

Liquid water contains the building blocks of diverse ice phases.

Project description:Water molecules can arrange into a liquid with complex hydrogen-bond networks and at least 17 experimentally confirmed ice phases with enormous structural diversity. It remains a puzzle how or whether this multitude of arrangements in different phases of water are related. Here we investigate the structural similarities between liquid water and a comprehensive set of 54 ice phases in simulations, by directly comparing their local environments using general atomic descriptors, and also by demonstrating that a machine-learning potential trained on liquid water alone can predict the densities, lattice energies, and vibrational properties of the ices. The finding that the local environments characterising the different ice phases are found in water sheds light on the phase behavior of water, and rationalizes the transferability of water models between different phases.
