Antibiotics in Crab Ponds of Lake Guchenghu Basin, China: Occurrence, Temporal Variations, and Ecological Risks.

ABSTRACT: Antibiotics are widely used in aquaculture, however, this often results in undesirable ecological effects. To evaluate the occurrence, temporal variations, and ecological risk of antibiotics in five crab ponds of Lake Guchenghu Basin, China, 44 antibiotics from nine classes were analyzed by rapid resolution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (RRLC-MS/MS). Twelve antibiotics belonging to six classes were detected in the aqueous phase of five crab ponds, among which sulfonamides and macrolides were the predominant classes, and six compounds (sulfamonomethoxine, sulfadiazine, trimethoprim, erythromycin-H₂O, monensin, and florfenicol) were frequently detected at high concentrations. In general, the antibiotic levels varied between different crab ponds, with the average concentrations ranging from 122 to 1440 ng/L. The antibiotic concentrations in crab ponds exhibited obvious seasonal variations, with the highest concentration and detection frequency detected in summer. Multivariate analysis showed that antibiotic concentrations were significantly correlated with environmental variables, such as total organic carbon, phosphate, ammonia nitrogen, and pH. Sulfadiazine, clarithromycin, erythromycin-H₂O, and ciprofloxacin posed a high risk to algae, while the mixture of antibiotics could pose a high risk to aquatic organisms in the crab ponds. Overall, the usage of antibiotics in farming ponds should be comprehensively investigated and controlled to preserve a healthy aquaculture ecosystem.

Project description:Antibiotic pollution from family animal farms is often neglected, but the waste from these farms usually caused more harm to the surroundings because arbitrary discharge without effective disposal. The pollution status and ecological risks of 45 veterinary antibiotics on 33 family animal farms in Dali city, Erhai Lake basin of China, were firstly delivered. The results showed that antibiotic contamination was prevalent in different environmental mediums (feed, manure, wastewater and soil) on these family farms. Manure had highest antibiotic levels among all the environmental mediums. Tetracyclines (TCs) usually had higher concentrations (ND-404.95 mg/kg) than the other classes, among which chlorotetracycline (CTC) was the dominant type. Among different animal species, target 13 pig farms had the highest antibiotic concentrations, the most total types and unique types of antibiotics, which were followed by target 11 chicken farms then target 9 cattle farms. The antibiotic densities of animal waste were calculated by per animal, which showed that pig waste presented high density; and family chicken farms were characterized by quinolone antibiotics (QAs) and macrolide antibiotics (MAs) pollution. For the antibiotic ecological risks in effluent water, oxytetracycline (OTC), CTC, ofloxacin (OFL), enrofloxacin (ENR), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX2) exhibited much more toxic effects on algae. OTC and doxycycline (DXC) posed high risk for invertebrate; while no antibiotic caused high ecological risk for fish. Some antibiotics were quantitatively detected in the soil but no antibiotic posed obvious ecological risks on soils. However, the interaction of synergistic or antagonistic effects between different antibiotics should be brought to the forefront. This study gave some information of antibiotic pollution on family livestock farms, which indicated that animal waste from family farms was indeed an important pollution source of antibiotics for the environment.

Project description:Antibiotics are widely used in human medical, livestock, and aquaculture fields. Most antibiotics are water-soluble and cannot be fully absorbed by humans or animals. If feces or wastewater containing antibiotics are improperly treated or discharged directly into surface water or groundwater, it will undoubtedly have an impact on aquatic organisms. The Ganjiang River is the largest river in Jiangxi Province and the largest tributary of Poyang Lake Basin. Jinjiang River, a tributary of Ganjiang River, is a typical livestock and poultry breeding area in the Poyang Lake Basin, along which many townships and counties are distributed. Gao'an and Shanggao counties are important agricultural and animal husbandry production areas in Jiangxi Province. In this paper, automatic solid phase extraction-ultra high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPE-UPLC-MS/MS) technology was used to simultaneously detect 27 antibiotics in 5 categories of macrolides, tetracyclines, quinolones, nitroimidazoles and sulfonamides in water. Based on this method, the concentrations and distributions of these antibiotics were analyzed. Ecological risk assessment of the Jinjiang River Basin was conducted using the ecological risk quotient method, aiming to supplement antibiotic data in the Jinjiang River Basin and provide scientific basis for local ecological environment management. The research results indicate that from 2019 to 2021, two years later, there was an increase in the use of Sulfadiazine and Roxithromycin in the Jinjiang River Basin, while the usage of Ciprofloxacin and Oxytetracycline was relatively low. In 2021, out of the 27 antibiotics, 24 were detected in surface water, 20 in groundwater, and all in wastewater. Among them, Sulfamethoxazole was the most widely used antibiotic, primarily in livestock and poultry farming. Gao'an City, a key breeding area in the Jinjiang River Basin, exhibited the highest concentration of Sulfamethoxazole at 409.96 ng·L-1, which far exceeds other antibiotics and warrants significant attention. A comparison of surface water concentrations between the Jinjiang River and 12 other regions revealed higher overall pollution levels of Roxithromycin and Sulfamethoxazole. Furthermore, according to the ecological risk assessment results, only Sulfamethoxazole poses a moderate risk to aquatic organisms.
