Spontaneous Emergence of Legibility in Writing Systems: The Case of Orientation Anisotropy.

ABSTRACT: Cultural forms are constrained by cognitive biases, and writing is thought to have evolved to fit basic visual preferences, but little is known about the history and mechanisms of that evolution. Cognitive constraints have been documented for the topology of script features, but not for their orientation. Orientation anisotropy in human vision, as revealed by the oblique effect, suggests that cardinal (vertical and horizontal) orientations, being easier to process, should be overrepresented in letters. As this study of 116 scripts shows, the orientation of strokes inside written characters massively favors cardinal directions, and it is organized in such a way as to make letter recognition easier: Cardinal and oblique strokes tend not to mix, and mirror symmetry is anisotropic, favoring vertical over horizontal symmetry. Phylogenetic analyses and recently invented scripts show that cultural evolution over the last three millennia cannot be the sole cause of these effects.

Spontaneous emergence of social influence in online systems.

Project description:Social influence drives both offline and online human behavior. It pervades cultural markets, and manifests itself in the adoption of scientific and technical innovations as well as the spread of social practices. Prior empirical work on the diffusion of innovations in spatial regions or social networks has largely focused on the spread of one particular technology among a subset of all potential adopters. Here we choose an online context that allows us to study social influence processes by tracking the popularity of a complete set of applications installed by the user population of a social networking site, thus capturing the behavior of all individuals who can influence each other in this context. By extending standard fluctuation scaling methods, we analyze the collective behavior induced by 100 million application installations, and show that two distinct regimes of behavior emerge in the system. Once applications cross a particular threshold of popularity, social influence processes induce highly correlated adoption behavior among the users, which propels some of the applications to extraordinary levels of popularity. Below this threshold, the collective effect of social influence appears to vanish almost entirely, in a manner that has not been observed in the offline world. Our results demonstrate that even when external signals are absent, social influence can spontaneously assume an on-off nature in a digital environment. It remains to be seen whether a similar outcome could be observed in the offline world if equivalent experimental conditions could be replicated.

Mathematical modeling reveals spontaneous emergence of self-replication in chemical reaction systems.

Project description:Explaining the origin of life requires us to elucidate how self-replication arises. To be specific, how can a self-replicating entity develop spontaneously from a chemical reaction system in which no reaction is self-replicating? Previously proposed mathematical models either supply an explicit framework for a minimal living system or consider only catalyzed reactions, and thus fail to provide a comprehensive theory. Here, we set up a general mathematical model for chemical reaction systems that properly accounts for energetics, kinetics, and the conservation law. We found that 1) some systems are collectively catalytic, a mode whereby reactants are transformed into end products with the assistance of intermediates (as in the citric acid cycle), whereas some others are self-replicating, that is, different parts replicate each other and the system self-replicates as a whole (as in the formose reaction, in which sugar is replicated from formaldehyde); 2) side reactions do not always inhibit such systems; 3) randomly chosen chemical universes (namely random artificial chemistries) often contain one or more such systems; 4) it is possible to construct a self-replicating system in which the entropy of some parts spontaneously decreases, in a manner similar to that discussed by Schrödinger; and 5) complex self-replicating molecules can emerge spontaneously and relatively easily from simple chemical reaction systems through a sequence of transitions. Together, these results start to explain the origins of prebiotic evolution.

Friction anisotropy with respect to topographic orientation.

Project description:Friction characteristics with respect to surface topographic orientation were investigated using surfaces of different materials and fabricated with grooves of different scales. Scratching friction tests were conducted using a nano-indentation-scratching system with the tip motion parallel or perpendicular to the groove orientation. Similar friction anisotropy trends were observed for all the surfaces studied, which are (1) under a light load and for surfaces with narrow grooves, the tip motion parallel to the grooves offers higher friction coefficients than does that perpendicular to them, (2) otherwise, equal or lower friction coefficients are found under this motion. The influences of groove size relative to the diameter of the mating tip (as a representative asperity), surface contact stiffness, contact area, and the characteristic stiction length are discussed. The appearance of this friction anisotropy is independent of material; however, the boundary and the point of trend transition depend on material properties.

Probing heme vibrational anisotropy: an imidazole orientation effect?

Project description:The complete iron vibrational spectrum of the five-coordinate high-spin complex [Fe(OEP)(2-MeHIm)], where OEP = octaethylporphyrinato and 2-MeHIm = 2-methylimidazole, has been obtained by oriented single-crystal nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopy (NRVS) data. Measurements have been made in three orthogonal directions, which provides quantitative information for all iron motion. These experimental data, buttressed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, have been used to define the effects of the axial ligand orientation. Although the axial imidazole removes the degeneracy in the in-plane vibrations, the imidazole orientation does not appear to control the direction of the in-plane iron motion. This is in contrast to the effect of the imidazolate ligand, as defined by DFT calculations, which does have substantial effects on the direction of the in-plane iron motion. The axial NO ligand has been found to have the strongest orientational effect (Angew. Chem., Int. Ed., 2010, 49, 4400). Thus the strength of the directional properties are in the order NO > imidazolate > imidazole, consistent with the varying strength of the Fe-ligand bond.

Spontaneous orientation polarization of flavonoids.

Project description:Spontaneous orientation polarization (SOP) is macroscopic electric polarization that is attributed to a constant orientational degree of dipole moments of polar molecules on average. The phenomenon has been found in small molecules like H2O at low temperatures and π-conjugated molecules employed in organic light-emitting diodes. In this study, we demonstrate that a thin film of baicalein, a flavonoid compound found in natural products, exhibits SOP and resultant giant surface potential (GSP) exceeding 5500 mV at a film thickness of 100 nm. Vacuum-deposition of baicalein under high vacuum results in smooth and amorphous films, which enables the generation of GSP with a slope of 57 mV/nm in air, a value comparable to the representative of an organic semiconductor showing GSP, tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum(III) (Alq3). We also found the superior photostability of a baicalein film compared to an Alq3 film. These findings highlight the potential of baicalein in new applications to organic electronics.

Dynamic crystallography reveals spontaneous anisotropy in cubic GeTe.

Project description:Cubic energy materials such as thermoelectrics or hybrid perovskite materials are often understood to be highly disordered1,2. In GeTe and related IV-VI compounds, this is thought to provide the low thermal conductivities needed for thermoelectric applications1. Since conventional crystallography cannot distinguish between static disorder and atomic motions, we develop the energy-resolved variable-shutter pair distribution function technique. This collects structural snapshots with varying exposure times, on timescales relevant for atomic motions. In disagreement with previous interpretations3-5, we find the time-averaged structure of GeTe to be crystalline at all temperatures, but with anisotropic anharmonic dynamics at higher temperatures that resemble static disorder at fast shutter speeds, with correlated ferroelectric fluctuations along the <100>c direction. We show that this anisotropy naturally emerges from a Ginzburg-Landau model that couples polarization fluctuations through long-range elastic interactions6. By accessing time-dependent atomic correlations in energy materials, we resolve the long-standing disagreement between local and average structure probes1,7-9 and show that spontaneous anisotropy is ubiquitous in cubic IV-VI materials.

Orientation anisotropy of quantitative MRI relaxation parameters in ordered tissue.

Project description:In highly organized tissues, such as cartilage, tendons and white matter, several quantitative MRI parameters exhibit dependence on the orientation of the tissue constituents with respect to the main imaging magnetic field (B0). In this study, we investigated the dependence of multiple relaxation parameters on the orientation of articular cartilage specimens in the B0. Bovine patellar cartilage-bone samples (n = 4) were investigated ex vivo at 9.4 Tesla at seven different orientations, and the MRI results were compared with polarized light microscopy findings on specimen structure. Dependences of T2 and continuous wave (CW)-T1ρ relaxation times on cartilage orientation were confirmed. T2 (and T2*) had the highest sensitivity to orientation, followed by TRAFF2 and adiabatic T2ρ. The highest dependence was seen in the highly organized deep cartilage and the smallest in the least organized transitional layer. Increasing spin-lock amplitude decreased the orientation dependence of CW-T1ρ. T1 was found practically orientation-independent and was closely followed by adiabatic T1ρ. The results suggest that T1 and adiabatic T1ρ should be preferred for orientation-independent quantitative assessment of organized tissues such as articular cartilage. On the other hand, based on the literature, parameters with higher orientation anisotropy appear to be more sensitive to degenerative changes in cartilage.

Spontaneous Emergence of Multicellular Heritability.

Project description:The major transitions in evolution include events and processes that result in the emergence of new levels of biological individuality. For collectives to undergo Darwinian evolution, their traits must be heritable, but the emergence of higher-level heritability is poorly understood and has long been considered a stumbling block for nascent evolutionary transitions. Using analytical models, synthetic biology, and biologically-informed simulations, we explored the emergence of trait heritability during the evolution of multicellularity. Prior work on the evolution of multicellularity has asserted that substantial collective-level trait heritability either emerges only late in the transition or requires some evolutionary change subsequent to the formation of clonal multicellular groups. In a prior analytical model, we showed that collective-level heritability not only exists but is usually more heritable than the underlying cell-level trait upon which it is based, as soon as multicellular groups form. Here, we show that key assumptions and predictions of that model are borne out in a real engineered biological system, with important implications for the emergence of collective-level heritability.

Spontaneous and Electrically Induced Anisotropy of Composite Agarose Gels.

Project description:Agarose gels containing and not bacteriorhodopsin purple membranes (incorporated before gelling) manifest spontaneous optical anisotropy. The dependencies of the anisotropy on the agarose concentration and time have been studied. The rise in the anisotropy is explained by the predominant orientation of the agarose fibers during the gelling and subsequent deformation of the gel net. In the electric field, additional optical anisotropy rises, which is caused by the orientation of the membranes. A procedure has been developed to separate electrically induced and spontaneous anisotropy in composite gels. The isoelectric points and surface electric potential of bacteriorhodopsin trimer and purple membranes are calculated by the method of protein electrostatics to explain their electric asymmetry, which leads to perpendicular orientation in the direct electric field and longitudinal in the kilohertz sinusoidal field. The results allow for an increase in the separation capability of composite gels of electrophoresis for macromolecules with different sizes by applying an appropriate electric field to modulate the effective pore size.

Spontaneous in-flight accommodation of hand orientation to unseen grasp targets: A case of action blindsight.

Project description:The division of labour between the dorsal and ventral visual pathways is well established. The ventral stream supports object identification, while the dorsal stream supports online processing of visual information in the service of visually guided actions. Here, we report a case of an individual with a right inferior quadrantanopia who exhibited accurate spontaneous rotation of his wrist when grasping a target object in his blind visual field. His accurate wrist orientation was observed despite the fact that he exhibited no sensitivity to the orientation of the handle in a perceptual matching task. These findings indicate that non-geniculostriate visual pathways process basic volumetric information relevant to grasping, and reinforce the observation that phenomenal awareness is not necessary for an object's volumetric properties to influence visuomotor performance.
